To say that he was nervous would be an understatement.
He was outright terrified. He had no idea how long he had been staring at his phone, but this... wasn't getting him anywhere. Besides, she might not even say no! He wouldn't know unless he asked. But...

Jake let out a sigh, letting the phone sit on the bed as he buried his face in his hands and groaned. Why was this so hard to do? After the way he treated her, there was no way she'd want to see him again, let alone talk to him. But... he couldn't not try. Even after Stormy had tried her best to reassure him, he just... didn't feel confident. At least he finally came to terms with his own feelings, but... what if Sherry didn't reciprocate them? He wouldn't be surprised if she never wanted to see his face again, but... she at least deserved to know the truth, right? This whole time, she had believed he pushed her away because he hated her, but if she knew the truth... no, it would only make her more mad.

He wrestled with this thought process for several minutes, and finally gave up. No, she deserved to no. He couldn't lie about his feelings anymore. He DID want to be with her, but... he wanted her safe too. A solution to that would be to become stronger so that he could protect her and stay by her side, rather than being a liability and a burdern, and yet...
His gaze rested on Chester's broken remains. Part of him had thought it best if he got Chester fixed first. That way, if Sherry DID reject him, he at least had someone to fall back on... but the nergal would probably be furious with him for not acknowledging and accepting her feelings in the first place, so if maybe he could repair things before then...

Another sigh. He really didn't know what he was doing. Regardless, whether it worked out or not, Chester would find out anyways. And... maybe...
Ok, this was getting ridiculous. He was going in circles and nothing was getting done. Taking a deep breath, he marched back to his bed, grabbed his phone, and fired off a quick text before he could stop himself.

GrnGriff.
Text to Sherry: I need to talk to you.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 12:58 am

Her phone buzzed, which in itself was normal enough. It was the main form of communication on the island after all. As she pulled it from her pocket, that little part of her that hoped was busy hoping, and all the practical parts of her were busy telling the hoping part not to. It would be an order, or someone requesting a report or some other silly thing. There was nothing to hope for.

Freezing was the only way to describe what happened to Sherry when she did see who the text was from. She must have read it three times before it even made sense to her. It was Jake, and he needed to talk to her. Sherry stood in the laundry room and stared at that message. The practical parts of her wasted no time trying to squash the hope-filled part under a ton of doubt and memory.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: Ok. What about? When? where?

Her response was quick. s**t. What could he want to talk about? Did he want the necklace back? Or maybe he did want to be friends. She'd never said they couldn't be. She...she could try that. Maybe. If he wanted to. Or maybe he was going to tell her he never wanted to see her again. No, that's silly.

She tried not to hope, she almost didn't dare to. That little bit of her that never stopped hoping was still doing it though. Still hoping.

Sherry sighed as she set the phone down and forced herself to start folding her laundry again. She would just have to wait and see what he said.

After sending off the text, he sat there, waiting nervously. What if she was still mad? What if she never wanted to talk to him? What if-

His phone buzzed, making him jump, and he quickly flipped open the phone to read it. Well, uh, at least she didn't seem mad. Just bewildered. He didn't blame her, considering he had just randomly texted her out of the blue when they were supposedly not on speaking terms. Her questions made him pause for a moment, wondering what the best thing to say was.

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: It's better if I tell you in person

...Time?

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: Sometime soon. The sooner the better

This really didn't answer any questions. What the hell did "soon" mean?
Location...

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: Bed someplace quiet.

... Auto correct. Really. REALLY?

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: Beds

GODAMMIT

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: I MEANT BEST PREFERABLY SOMEPLACE QUIET

A pause.

GrnGriff
Text to Sherry: it's kind of personal, I don't want others listening

... He might as well tell her he wanted to sleep with her.

Maybe part of his subconscious was trying to say his bedroom, but that would probably have been EXTREMLY awkward considering what he was goin to say, and what if she rejected him... in his own room? But then if she didn't... Still her bedroom was way too much to ask, and what if she didn't reject him? What if she still had feelings for him, and they were alone... in a room...

Then again, a room was pretty quiet...

He clearly didn't think this through.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 7:44 am

She watched that phone. Another silly thing to do since it wasn't going to run away or anything, but still she watched it. Her laundry was almost forgotten about. Seriously. What could he want to talk about?

She probably should have told him no or something. Right? A rumble from Armagnac seemed to agree with that. What if he did want to be friends? She'd almost convinced herself that was possible, but what if it wasn't? Then she'd just continue being sad, secret-crush Sherry. Even if it wasn't a secret. Nobody wanted that. She didn't, and she knew he didn't. He'd said it was impossible. It was. She knew it.

Which meant he either wanted to tell her off again, wanted his gift back, or needed something. What was she getting so flustered over? It was probably work related. Yeah. Of course it was. He probably needed a lifer, or needed some bandages, or just... something. Research help maybe?

She jumped when the phone buzzed.

It's better if I tell you in person

What? If she hadn't been visibly flustered before, she was now. What did that mean? That could be anything. It could mean a string of apologies, it could mean he found out he was terminally ill, it could mean he wanted to discuss things.... No. She knew better than that. He certainly couldn't want to be angry at her, she'd made a point of avoiding him (which hadn't been too hard, considering he'd been in the infirmary for a while), but... She sighed just as the phone buzzed again.

What the hell did soon mean? Now? Tomorrow? He was being vague and it was only serving to make her more confused.

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: What?

No sooner had she sent her question than a new message arrived:

Bed someplace quiet.

"Excuse me?" It might have been amusing if it didn't both confuse her and make her turn red. The next text didn't make it any better. Was he teasing her? Propositioning her? Trying to confuse her? (That one was certainly working.) Or did he just not know--

OH. OKAY. That made sense, he didn't know how to text properly. Too bad she was already rather red. Which she really shouldn't be. He hated her, they hadn't spoken in ages, and he'd only mentioned talking in person and beds. She could kick herself for letting it fluster her. Seriously. What was wrong with her?

Armagnac didn't seem pleased by it, either.

Sherry was now debating the whole thing. She did want to talk to him, but her reasons were different from his and-- Wait. Why someplace quiet? What--

The last text did not answer her question at all.

She spent several moments looking at her phone. Talking, personal, in person, someplace quiet... He hadn't even spoken to her yet and she'd been flustered, and she really shouldn't have been. This was clearly a bad idea. She was probably going to cry again.

But. What if he did need her help with something? She couldn't just leave him out in the cold, if that were the case. They...they should at least be able to have a functioning work relationship, anyway. Right?

[A.V.]
Text to Jake: What? OK. My room in 10 min.

She closed the phone, pocketed it, shoved the rest of her laundry in the basket and made straight for her room. Neutral ground might have been a better choice, but if...If he was going to try and be angry at her, he could at least do in her room. That way she could kick him out.

Her text both relieved and terrified him. On one hand, at least he didn't have to worry about other people overhearing (this was embarrassing enough as is), and... to him, a girl's room seemed extremely private and personal, but... at least if she DID reject him, he could easily leave and go hide in his room. Forever. Maybe that's why she chose her room? She would feel more secure there and could kick him out anytime she wanted. The last thing he wanted to do was make her MORE uncomfortable (though he probably failed at that already, what with confusing her with his incapacity at texting), and...

He didn't know why, but he a case of Deja Vu washed over him. Perhaps this was premonition to what had happened before. He hurt her before, so it was only fair that she hurt him back. He wasn't sure if his heart could take another blow, already hurting from the fact he had probably screwed things up permanently, and he could no longer have Sherry as a friend, let alone anything more. Even the thought of being "just friends" made his heart ache. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea...

But no. She deserved to know. He owed her at least that much. Besides, he could just... leave after he confessed. This way he didn't have to hear it. That was... all he wanted to do, wasn't it? Just to tell her it wasn't as one-sided as she thought and apologize for being a complete d**k to her. That was fine, wasn't it? So why... was he so scared?

This... couldn't go on. He slapped his cheeks, telling himself to get a grip, and then he got up and started to head towards her room.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 8:29 am

Sherry was in her room, thoroughly glad she didn't have a bunch of stuff to clean up. It shouldn't have mattered, but it did. She'd put her basket of half folded laundry in her wardrobe, and straighten her bed covers, tossing the extra pillows against the wall as usual. Aside from the desk and the chair, there still wasn't much else in the room. It might have been messier...but she'd been spending a lot of time in there over the past week, and well, things had been picked up. She didn't own a ton of stuff anyway.

She almost regretted saying ten minutes. It was a very long time to wait. Five would have been better, but she'd wanted to make certain she'd be back in time. Perhaps she also needed a few minutes to breathe.

Those extra few minutes were a terrible idea. All it did was let her think. There were a million things he could want to talk about, and the only ones that seemed plausible were either work related, or were going to hurt, at least a little. I can handle it, she told herself. She had to. This was all kind of her fault... and wasn't she just sitting her blowing everything out of proportion? Yes. Yes she was.

It was work related. It had to be. He wouldn't hunt her down to say mean things. He wasn't that mean. She also knew he didn't want to be friends. Which left work. She could handle work.

She also kind of hoped he wouldn't show. He hadn't texted her back... maybe he didn't need her.

Unfortunately for her, Jake was already standing in front of her room, hands in his pockets as he was trying to figure out what to do from here. In his haste, he hasn't realize he was still in the clothes he slept in, which was a simple white t-shirt and black sweats. This really was Deja Vu all over again, with probably the same results. He was really tempted to turn back, to save himself the trouble of being told what he suspected he'd already know, but... he came all this way (though her room wasn't really that far), and... well, maybe it'd help Sherry if she could tell him off and slam the door in his face or something. He deserved it after all.

Swallowing nervously, he raised a hand and knocked.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 3:26 pm

At least he only had to knock the one time before the door opened. He hadn't had to wait more than a moment, either. She'd kind of been waiting for the knock.

Opening the door, she glanced at him for a moment before opening it wider and stepping aside, inviting him in. Part of her wanted to tell him to leave; she didn't know if she could handle any more heartache. She wasn't one to take things back though, and she'd agreed to hear him out. Her expression was as blank as she could make it, though she was pretty sure she looked nervous.

She waved at the chair in the room, offering it to him. He couldn't have shown up dressed any more casually. Heck, if she didn't know better she'd say he was wearing his pajamas. She'd seen him sleep in clothes like that before. Maybe he was here to mock her.

Her hand went to her scarf as she stepped closer to her bed, leaving him to close the door. If he took a seat, she'd follow suit. Fingers fidgeted with her scarf, making sure the pendant underneath was hidden. Shoot, she'd forgotten to take that off. She also wished she'd put on her coat, and maybe her boots. She was fully dressed otherwise, but she still felt vaguely exposed. Damn him and his pajamas.

"Hi," she said finally.

When Sherry opened the door, Jake froze, staring at her, and then felt... extremely under-dressed. Dammit, he should have changed, or... at least brushed his hair. Then again... he rarely ever did brush it, but, he still felt more conscious than usual about his appearance. Even the scars on his arms seemed to stand out more than usual, and he crossed his arms, as if he could hide them.

Part of him wondered if she would close the door immediately, or tell him to go away, but when she opened the door wider and stepped aside, making her way back to her bed after gesturing to her chair, he only assumed she was letting him come in. And so he did, closing the door behind him as he sat down on her chair... properly. After everything, they didn't need an entire re-enactment of what had happened last time, especially with everything being as tense as it was.

He was looking down, wondering what to say, where to start. When she spoke, he lifted his head, giving her a hesitant smile.

"Hey."

... right, he should... probably say more.

"Um... thanks for agreeing to see me."
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 7:17 pm

He looked nervous, near as she could tell. Crossing his arms, looking down... Sherry didn't know what to make of it, really. If he was nervous, then maybe he did need help with something? She didn't want to hope for anything more. Bits of previous conversations floating through her mind warned her against that. Of course, he'd been a bit nervous on the cruise, too, and that had been...

With a tiny sigh Sherry sat herself down on the bed facing him. She gave a small smile at his greeting, trying to read the expression on his face. "It's not a big deal," she said, waving her hand dismissively. Armagnac scoffed, and Sherry ignored her.

The lip biting that cam next was unconscious. Sherry didn't know if she should continue the conversation with random, nervous small talk, or just get right to the matter. She looked to the floor, then back to Jake. Small talk would only make things worse, if things were going that way.

"What did you want to talk about?"

"I..."

Where to begin?

"I wanted... to apologize. I... I'm really sorry for the way I treated you. You... didn't deserve to get yelled at and... I've been... just..." he groaned, tugging at his hair, frustrated. When he thought back to how he had acted, there... there was really no excuse. Even if he was trying to do it for her own good, no one deserved to have emotionally abused like that.

"I said tons of nasty things to you, and... said that... your feelings towards me were petty, foolish, stupid... I... should have never said that. As you said, they were your feelings, not mine, and... I had no right to ridicule them." He sighed. "I'm sorry... for everything. I know after all this, you might not... be able to forgive me, but I guess I..."

He really just wanted to leave, but...
Taking a deep breath, he looked up at her, gauging her reaction.

"What I'm saying is...if possible..., I want to...
ask for a second chance."
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 9:13 pm

His whole demeanor said he wasn't there to be angry, and she'd hoped for something like this... but to think he was actually apologizing? He looked really miserable doing it, too.

She watched him. Listened as he spoke and watched. When he finished speaking there was only silence in the room as Sherry tried to figure out exactly how to respond.

Apparently she was going to do it with tears. She could feel them building up in her eyes, though she didn't know if they were happy tears or something else. Something about this whole thing was extremely bittersweet. She'd wanted an apology, she'd wanted to be on good terms with him, but he looked distraught enough it made her sad. Even though he was asking for a second chance. A second chance at what, exactly?

Closing her eyes, she shook her head. "It's already been forgiven." She sighed, opening her eyes to look at him. "And you don't have to ask for a second chance. It's yours. I never..." She knew she'd have a hell of a hard time denying him that. Even if it was just friends.

"But... can I ask why? What... What's changed?"

It frightened him to see her cry, and he wanted to reach out to comfort her, but... wasn't he the cause of her tears?
He sighed, sitting back as he folded his hands in his lap.
"I guess... I finally realized that what I was doing was hurting more than helping. I didn't push you away because I hated you. I... I was scared of you getting hurt because of me, because I know how reckless I am. I've accumulated more scars in a quarter of the time it took for me to even obtain one of the scars I had before waking up, and..."

His gaze was downcast.

"I didn't want you to get more involved, because I couldn't protect you. I lost... someone dear to me before because I was selfish. Even though I knew it would only bring danger to her if I stayed by her side, I still..."

He shuffled in his chair.

"I told myself that your feelings... you'd learn to let go of them. I was so mean and terrible to you, I deliberately pushed people away so I wouldn't get emotionally attached, and yet..."

Raising his head, he looked at Sherry again, giving her a bittersweet smile.

"After you... kissed me, and confessed, I was... I was really confused, and it made me really think about... us. I guess... the more I thought about it, the more I realized... I liked you too... a lot. A lot more than I should have. But I didn't want to repeat the same mistake, I didn't want to lose you too. When you... offered your life in exchange for mine, I knew I had to end it. If... if they had killed you then, I..."

He buried his face in his hands.

"I don't think I'd be able to live with myself. But at the same time, the thought of being away from you was tearing me apart. Even after you... gave me that letter and left, I... I told myself it was for your own good, that you'd be happier with someone else, and yet..."

A hand clutched at his chest.

"It hurt... so much inside. I couldn't focus, couldn't do anything. The pain was unbearable. It wasn't until I talked to Stormy that I realized what I was doing wasn't helping any of us, but only hurting us both."

Slowly lifting his head, he fixed his gaze on Sherry once more.

"All I know now is... I want to be with you. I... I'll become stronger. I'll protect you. I just... I don't want to lose anyone anymore. I don't want to lose you."
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 11:18 pm

Sherry nodded. Chester had indeed been right. Jake had been pushing her away for her own good, however silly that was. She still didn't know what happened before and she wanted to ask about it, but now didn't quite seem like the right time for that. So she kept listening.

A shiver ran down her back when he said he liked her too. No, no. That was wrong. He didn't... She'd wanted to hear those words and he'd just said them. She must have misheard that, or misinterpreted it. He couldn't... He did. Everything he said after that only confirmed it.

She did not know what to do with this information.

"You're joking." She regretted the words before she'd even fully formed the last syllable. He'd said the same thing to her and that had been a bad night.

"I mean, I don't understand. I understand why you pushed, but I don't... You don't have to protect me, you can't, not all the time, not from what's out there." She shook her head hoping to clear it. It was all too much. It was what she wanted but...

"Are you sure?" She leaned on the edge of the bed. Damn tears. Wiping at them was almost distracting. "I know you've been through a lot with everything. I didn't mean to walk out on you when you needed a friend, and if that's all your looking for now that's fine you don't have to say all of the extra stuff. You know how I feel about you and that hasn't changed and..." She paused to breathe. "I can be your friend. I'd like to see about..." More was what she wanted to say, but she couldn't bring herself to. "I had a lot of fun on the cruise. I knew I'd pushed it too far when you pushed back the next day. I don't think I can do that again. With everything you just said..." Sherry was confused.

Those two words terrified him more than it should. This was... it was going to be the exact same as that night, wasn't it? Of course, he didn't deserve happiness, not even now. He was making the same mistake again, but this time, he would be punished a different way.

He swallowed nervously, too embarrassed to make eye contact with her. He felt sick inside, dizzy. This was how she had felt when he rejected her that night, wasn't it? Though she hadn't... flat out rejected him, her words still made him sad.

"I know... but I want to. I don't know if I can... but I..."
Again, he had said the same thing to her. Hunters didn't live long lives. Relationships were pointless.
... So why was he so desperate to pursue one?

"I... I just..."
To be honest, he wasn't sure of himself anymore. The two parts of him were still at war, betweening sating his heart or sating his mind. But then she spoke, and the colour drained from his face.

"I can be your friend."

"I don't think I can do that again."

It was too late, wasn't it? Of course she wouldn't be so dumb to put herself through heartache again. Of course. He wanted to be ok with that, to tell her he was more than happy to have things go back the way they were, but...

But I don't want to be just friends. I want... more.

He pushed himself to his feet, wobbling slightly.

"I... I'm sorry. After everything I did and said in the past, this... seems to just confuse you more, doesn't it? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I..."

He couldn't do this anymore.

"I'm sorry for taking up your time, I just... had to get that off my chest. I won't disturb you anymore. Sorry."

With that, he started heading towards the door.
Idiot. Such an idiot.
