Ah, the library! Mili marveled at the shelves of books, reaching far above her head. Directly in town was Owl mom, hooting softly at times to remind her charge to move quicker. Dwadling in the library wasn't a crime, but owl mom was paranoid with her mute baby being near those who could cull her. It was hard enough to get the card for the compendium-portmanteau (Mili prefered Library vastly to the other name).
After a few minutes of browsing, Milieu scuttled off to a new section. Sometimes you needed to be a tiny bit rebellious, and the lure of reading was just too strong. Owl mom began to hoot softly, trying to draw her charge back. Then the hoots became slighly stronger, and annoyed. Mili shook with silent laughter.
Here they were, compendiums on romance. Her eyes glanced from the dizzying selection of black romance to the smaller selection for Austpicing. Mili pursed her lips and huffed. Why wasn't there more writers? She selected a new tome with a ridiculously long name, one she succinctly shortened to "you know you're crazy for getting yourself into this mess".
Owl mom's hoots became annoyed and so, reluctantly, Mili rejoined with her bird lusus. As she turned a corner she noticed a notice on the edge of a bookcase. Something about beta-reading at the library this evening. A local writer?
Mili rushed to the flustered lusus (who gave her a peck on the shoulder for being a brat) and then made a b-line to where the poster said. Owl mom shuffled begrudgingly, but silently, behind. Poor old bird had already pushed herself well out of her comfort zone when drawing attention to themselves. Upon getting to the area, Mii noticed it was empty. No worry, the writer would appear soon enough.

[ As many times as Didero had been to the New Hemisect Library, he never really stopped being thrilled by the experience. There was always something new to discover! Books were like that to begin with, so an entire building full of 'em would of course be exciting... um... a hundred-fold. There were definitely at least a hundred books there.
Didero nodded in agreement with his own inner monologue as he thumbed through the stack of papers he carried. Someday there would be one more book in this establishment. His book to be specific. One he wrote.
Not that he could do it completely alone, though, natural talent notwithstanding. Didero had posted flyers all around the library advertising his need for a beta-reader, (One night he'd have a real editor, he tittered internally.) and now he was coming to see if he'd garnered any interest.
Content that his manuscript was in the proper order, Didero set his sights towards the back of the library and struck out with gusto.
Pigeondad, who had been far more interested in the trash can next to the vending machine, per usual, was left to catch up with his excitable charge. Per usual.
Didero came to an abrupt stop at the edge of the area designated for the critique--a section of the library cordoned off by a few bookshelves surrounding a table. Didero always liked this part of the library because it felt like a fort. It was a shame the shelves were full of boring stuff, like instruction manuals and old encyclopedias.
Tonight, however, there was something interesting! A troll! Someone had taken him up on his offer! Er... Not that he had any doubt that they would... Or that he was really "offering" anything. Just a chance to help with his novel. Also his gratitude. People liked gratitude, right?
"PSST!" Didero hissed in a lousy whisper to get the girl's attention. He held up his papers with one hand and pointed with the other. It was pretty clear what he was asking. He probably didn't need to be wiggling his eyebrows like that.
Pigeondad caught up with Didero at this point and landed softly from his glide behind the boy. Not that Didero noticed. Pigeondad cocked his head uneasily at the sight of the owl with the unfamiliar troll, but otherwise let Didero go about his business. This was about as low-key as the kid got, anyway. ]

Whatever mental image of a sophisticated, aspiring author Mili had formed was burst the second Didero started to eye brow waggle. Eye. brow. waggle. Was this troll for real? Instinctively Mili's own eyebrows shot up in response. Were they having some sort of dancing eyebrow mating ritual?
Too baffled to really come up with anything to think or write, she just nodded to Didero. Owl mom eyed both boy and lusus wearily, unsure of how to handle such inconspicuous people. When the shock wore off, she thought better and found her white board and marker.
//You must be the writer? I'm interested in reading your writing. My name is Milieu.// He was a Green blood, not far from her own color, which comforted her some.

[ Pigeondad registered that the unfamiliar lusus seemed just as exasperated with the situation as himself, so he made no motion to stop Didero from approaching the pair. They were all civilized here.
Didero probably hadn't even noticed the other lusus yet; he was too thrilled with the other troll. He had been surprised by the use of a whiteboard at first, but had quickly realized that it was a brilliant idea! Didero loved talking and he loved libraries, but libraries didn't love it when he talked in them. How clever! Didero knew he could trust his writing to such a smart troll.
Didero continued grinning and continued advancing until he'd passed Milieu and reached the table tucked away in the corner. Didero immediately dropped his stack of papers onto its surface and hopped up into one of the chairs, where he proceeded to spread the papers out into organized piles.
Content that the table was now completely covered in papers, Didero turned in his seat and excitedly waved Milieu over. Partway through his gesturing, Didero realized he could probably have been communicating a bit more efficiently and began hurriedly patting himself down for a pencil. He knew he had one on him somewhere..? ]

Mili watched as Didero tossed his things across the far corner table, wondering if she should scurry over now or wait until he was finished. She didn't have long to ponder, because the boy finished and was waving at her ecstatically. He sure did seem happy and well, that was a nice change of pace?
Taking her things she wandered over to the table, Owl mom cautiously shuffling behind. Most Trolls found the white board writing to be weird, but Didero was seemingly pleased. Maybe because he wrote? Carefully sitting in one of the chairs Mili placed the whiteboard and marker on the table, getting comfortable.
Then it hit her as he patted himself down. He was looking for something to write with. He wanted to write back to her. He thought she was doing this to be clever. He didn't know. Not yet, anyway. For one glorious dizzying moment Milieu was normal. Alternia tilted on its axis as she basked in the glow of 'normal'.
She quickly grabbed a marker from her bag and practically shanked Didero with it as she held it out. Her sharp toothed smile was frighteningly genuine. With her other hand she deftly popped the cap off her marker and wrote on her board, //I'm eager to read what you wrote! Can you tell me a bit about the story and characters before I start?//

[ Didero chirped in surprise as he instinctively dodged the presented marker. He scrambled to both recapture his composure and accept the marker, nodding rapidly in gratitude. Milieu seemed just as excited about this event as Didero was! This was fantastic!
Didero uncapped the marker with a "pop" and peered over at the whiteboard to see what Milieu had written. Didero struck a stock "thinking" pose and tapped on his chin with the marker a couple of times. Thankfully it was the end of the marker and not the tip, as Didero wasn't looking.
Finally, Didero seemed to have found the correct words and he pushed some of his papers on the table aside to pick up the clipboard he'd carried his manuscript in on. He'd clipped a small stack of blank pages to it for note-taking purposes. Didero quickly jotted down what he wanted to say and held it out so he was mirroring Milieu with her whiteboard. Didero's handwriting was pretty neat for a kid using a dry erase marker, albeit liberally underlined.
"I'm Did<3ro! smile "
Didero flipped the page.
"It's a crim<3 drama! It's about a hardboil<3d, blu<3blood<3d d<3t<3ctiv<3, and h<3's contract<3d by an old flam<3 to track down h<3r form<3r kism<3sis who's gon<3 missing in th<3 lowblood und<3rworld."
Coming from a greenblooded boy that couldn't have been more than six sweeps old, the quality of a story about such dark material wasn't exactly looking like a hopeful prospect. ] Magician Arcana IT HASN'T BEEN A YEAR YET. A hard boiled blueblood detective? Mili thought about such a story and found herself drawn to it immediately. She wasn't too much into kismesis, not as much as her own club suit, but anything on the dark spectrum was rather intriguing! Smiling brilliantly, she nodded her approval. || Oh! This sounds like a very very interesting story. I do like the idea of such a story. It would be an interesting twist if the old flame, the kismesis, and the detective became an auspice together|| It wasn't the little trolls place to offer any ideas on the story, but Mili couldn't help but fantasize about something so interesting.

[ Didero waited as patiently as he could for Milieu to finish writing her response. He was quiet, but still rocking on the balls of his feet. After what seemed like ages Milieu showed Didero what she'd written.
Didero peered intently at the words, as though he was looking for hidden messages. It was extremely rare for Didero to receive proper feedback on his writing, much less from someone who was treating him like a peer.
"A very, very interesting story," Didero nearly chirped at that. He smiled and bounced in place.
Didero then read about the suggestion for auspisticism. His rocking slowed to a stop and his mouth quirked into a tiny frown of thought. The concupiscent quadrants, mandatory as they were, received a great deal of attention in the media. Even of the conciliatory quadrants, the ashen quadrant was definitively the most overlooked. It hadn't even occurred to Didero to possibly include auspisticsm as a possible outcome in his novel that in its elevator pitch referenced an unsuccessful black relationship. Didero was embarrassed by the oversight.
But then, Didero was excited. He'd been thinking quietly for a long time and he'd only just realized he'd been leaving Milieu hanging. Didero jumped to full standing position. He would have clapped his hands, but remembered at the last second that he was in a library.
Didero fumbled about for the clipboard he'd been writing on. Upon snatching it and the marker, he scribbled out a response of his own.
"THAT'S P<3RF<3CT!!!"
Didero used one hand to clumsily shift his book across the table over to Milieu.
"Pl<3as<3 r<3ad som<3 and t<3ll m<3 if you hav<3 any oth<3r gr<3at id<3as!!"
Didero's thinkpan was overflowing with directions he could take his book. Uncharted waters of ashen literature! ]

The fact that Didero hadn't shot down the idea immediately bolstered the teal troll with much hope. This author seemed smart and receptive and it flustered the other troll to have any idea received positively. Especially when Didero opened the floor for more ideas. Nodding, Milieu wiped off her white board and began to scribble furiously. | I definitely will once I've read what you have down. One of the best and natural ways for an auspitice to occur is when an old kismesis returns. It can become deadly. | Milieu took a portion of Didero's manuscript and began to read.

[ Didero's brain simmered with ideas and barely-restrained elation as Milieu looked over his work. He forced himself to take a seat on the opposite side of the table while he waited. Eventually he set about doodling some of his thoughts on his paper. He was creating quite the convoluted idea web, but it kept him busy.
Didero's novel, meanwhile, was... not great. He'd at least had the forethought to not write in his quirk, but that didn't make the process of reading it any easier. The writing was dense and excessive. Or perhaps as Didero would have put it, "Viscous as sweet, ambrosial mind honey, flowing from spires of golden comb," give or take a number of words plucked from a thesaurus.
It could have also just been the way in which it was written, but the detective seemed to spend an awful lot of time talking about how sad his life was, relative to how great he was at his job, flushed romance, and literally everything else.
Didero tried not to make it too obvious that he was waiting for Milieu to finish reading. His furious scribbling would sporadically stop and pick up again as Didero occasionally flashed Milieu an expectant glance from across the table. ]

How did... How could she critique this? Normally the troll was a deft and fast reader, but the thick prose was impossible at parts. It was like trying to run in quicksand. Milieu had to reread a few passages just to be sure that the meaning hadn't be lost. And then the detective seemed oddly miserable for the greatness that was his... Everything. It was a little puzzling and the troll wondered if perhaps, just perhaps, the detective was a self-insert. That Didero was sad with his life and was writing out that emotional part. It would make sense, as it seemed detached from the reality in which the detective lived. Milieu set down the manuscript and nodded. Okay, time to got about this delicately. | I like what you have here so far. I think with some work and editting you have a great book on your hands. The only thing that is puzzling me is the detective. What part of his life is making him sad? Is he just unhappy in general? Or did something happen that made him feel sad like this? |

[ Didero looked about ready to burst with anticipation. The second Milieu looked up from her reading, Didero sat bolt upright and smiled dazzlingly. He was ready to hear how great everything was!
Milieu began to write on her board and Didero fumbled as he decided whether or not to grab his notes or keep his hands folded in his lap. By the time he’d arranged his clipboard in front of him, Milieu had finished her critique. Didero peered closer.
He nodded in affirmation at her first words. It was good! Good. Didero smiled and kept reading.
His smile tempered as he continued, coming to rest in a perplexed expression. He hadn’t considered the detective’s attitude to be unwarranted. He was a grizzled detective after all.
The gears were visibly turning as Didero failed to realize the problem. He turned his thoughts to Milieu’s specific questions. “Ah—“ he began before quickly remembering their game, and pulled up his blank papers.
“Thank you!” Didero wrote at the top of his page.
The next few lines came slower to Didero as he plotted out his answer. He prodded the tip of his snaggletooth with the eraser on his pencil. He wrote a few sentences and turned his paper back around.
“H<3’s a privat<3 d<3t<3ctiv<3! H<3’s hir<3d by p<3opl<3 with myst<3ri<3s th<3y want hidd<3n from th<3 imp<3rial authority<3s. H<3’s s<33n som<3 t<3rrible things in his lin<3 of work.” Didero gave another satisfied nod. This was what drew him to the idea of a crime drama in the first place. Such a dark topic made him feel very grown up. Milieu must have been too naïve to understand the slimy underbelly of the Alternian criminal underworld. Didero smiled knowingly.
“So do you think I should <3xpand mor<3 on his backstory?” Didero added, writing at an awkward angle as he kept his clipboard turned towards Milieu. Appealing to the general public was a valid goal, after all. ]

An appreciative smile colored her cheeks as she watched Didero struggle to write on the clipboard at that odd angle. It was extremely nice. Sure, the heart troll probably thought that Milieu was doing this so the drone at the front didn't get too angry at them. Still, it was great to see the effort.
Nodding enthusiastically, she gave him a thumbs up and quickly began to write a response, | I think that's a good idea. Focus more on his past or at least tell us more about his past! |

[ Didero nodded succinctly at Milieu's positive response. Very good! He was feeling more inspired already--if that was even possible. Heck, maybe he'd make it a trilogy! Movie producers loved trilogies...
Didero visibly jolted out of his dreams of grandeur. He held up his clipboard and underlined the "Thank you!" he'd already written multiple times. Flipping his paper over, he continued on the fresh side.
"This has b<33n a v<3ry <3nlight<3ning <3xp<3ri<3nc<3! Is th<3r<3 any chanc<3 I can contact you to r<3vi<3w my n<3xt draft wh<3n I finish it?"
Didero tried to accompany the message with his best, most shiny infant woofbeast eyes. The idea of writing with a specific person to impress was already proving to be quite motivating. Not to mention, if Didero elaborated on an ashen romance between characters, something told him Milieu would be specially equipped to appreciate such a dynamic. ]
