This is a RP between Novablu’s Aleksei and Domovoi and `Swirly’s Oberon and Etain smile

*~*

Something was amiss…and Aleksei wasn’t sure if she liked it or not. Having children was so different than she’d expected—she’d honestly expected a couple of little Alekseis, little heirs who would carry on the family line. Nameless, faceless little heirs who would grow up, grow wise, grow strong and destroy the evil lingering in the lands. They would be young, strong, fierce, fearless…

That’s not exactly what she got. What she got was: A kooky yet endearing Faerie King who…somehow? Made her life a little brighter. She used to see in black and white, good and evil, yes and no. Oberon was both black and white—strange and sweet. She was fond of him—oh, she wouldn’t call it love, not yet anyway. She wasn’t sure her battered, scarred heart was even capable, but she was fond, definitely. She liked having him around, liked having him by her side. Liked his strangeness…because it made her not-so-strange.

And those little heirs? The foals that popped from red-hued baskets were young, untainted and innocent. Tiny…beautiful. Hers. She was shocked at the amount of possession she felt towards those two little creatures with their fathers’ faerie wings. She stopped fighting for justice, just to protect them. I guess you could say she was very fond of them…something she’d never expected. A little part of her yearned for someone to carry on in her name so that someday, if she did die at the mercy of battle, that her line wouldn’t end, that evil wouldn’t reign supreme.
Now she wasn’t so sure.

Xxx

Domovoi was exactly what his mother didn’t expect—small, pink, and sweet with angel wings that furled out around him and below them, the filmy flutter wings that looked like stained glass. Where Mom was strong, capable, independent, Domovoi was happy to have fun and spend the day relaxing and flitting about, chasing his father’s people—glimpses of spirits that danced through the woods. He did what Mom couldn’t—he was having a childhood and he loved life. He loved his gruff mom, his silly-butt dad, and yes, even his sister.

Flopping on the ground, his legs stretched out and wings pressed tight to his body, he rolled in the dirt, throwing up a cloud of dust that floated over to his prissy princess of a sister. The whole time, he wore a broad grin on his face, laughing on the inside.

Life was perfect. The purple-hued stallion sighed contentedly and put his mind into focusing on becoming his large size. His mate, a stunningly beautiful mare, was coming to terms with the fact that she did indeed love him. He was the patient sort, if she didn’t want to say it… that was fine. He could and would happily wait for an eternity to get her to say those special words to him.

All he really had to do was look around at the two beautiful babies they had created together. Their son, a shocking bright pink with glorious pastel hints and flaming red hair… Domo was a true perfect blend of them both. And Etain? She was definitely daddy’s little girl and replica. There were pieces of Lexi in his princess but for the most part? When he looked at her he saw himself. Ah yes, life was good. The kids were old enough now to mostly take care of themselves and certainly smart enough to stay out of trouble. Soon he would have to start teaching them about their responsibilities towards the Faery-folk, but the Fae would have to forgive him and his family as they were on a vacation of sorts… for now.

“Lexi, my poppet, your expression is so serious. What could possibly be weighing you down?” Fluttering down beside her, Oberon made himself comfortable oblivious to how short he was next to his mate. “Our progeny are perfect are they not? They will carry on the royal duties of caring for the Fae with pride.” A wicked half-grin before slanting a look at her, “Aren’t you glad you gave me the time of day?” Affectionate, open, completely giving Oberon sometimes felt rejected by his mate but she was coming around. He would win her over completely.

Xxx

If only Oberon realized just how accurately he had his daughter pegged. She was a princess through-and-through and trusted implicitly that the Fae-folk were real. He daddy wouldn’t lie to her. Preening herself, nibbling at her fur delicately to make sure her markings laid flat the way they were supposed to, Etain was completely unprepared for the dirt that ended up hitting her. Spinning around, ears pinned back Etain prepared to lay into her brother.

She instead caught a mouthful of dust and began coughing and hacking. Bolting forward on incredibly thin legs, Etain stopped near her brother and regained her composure. “Domovoi! What is wrong with you?? I just got cleeeeean.” The edge of whine in her voice was sharp and Etain relished the chance to grate on her brother’s last nerve. She always made sure to be good when mamma and daddy were around because that’s just what princesses had to do… but gross brothers were completely exempt from that. Totally.

“I don’t even know how we’re related! You don’t act royal at all!”

Aleksei didn't spook this time as Oberon went from Fae-sized to horse-sized in one tiny moment, popping up beside her. Her ear flicked to register him, one ruby eye pinned on him as he smiled at her--wide, charming, disarming...sweet. It had taken her awhile not to flip out every time he would 'pop' in and out of his small size, having been grilled at a young age to always watch out for predators... Oberon wasn't dangerous, but old habits died hard.

She found herself gazing at him, both pairs of wings pulled snug against her sides, rising and falling with each breath taken. The days seemed to fade into one another with peace...and that was unusual for a mare like her. It made her nervous, to know that danger might be lurking around every corner, yet... She worried. She worried that she might slip up, that motherhood made her slow and that she'd fall prey to a kalona's fangs, teeth in her throat as she bled out, unable to protect her family. A chill ran down her spine.

She couldn't outrun what she was, no matter how hard she tried.

As Oberon spoke to her, she focused on him, ears never stopping their swiveling search. His voice was smooth and soft and eased the nerves biting like fleas and she relaxed a notch. "Life," she replied, knowing she probably sounded somber. She took in a breath and let it out in a sigh. "I just...worry. Worry that they won't be safe, worry that they won't...I don't even know. I don't think I could bear it if something happened to one of them. I know that's foolish--I'm not a normal mare, I've never been normal." She shook her head, gazing at her children. "I'm rather fond of them, Oberon."

He saw the whites of Etain's eyes as she spun on him, nostrils flared and looking a sight just as the big whomph of dust puffed up and smacked her square in the face. The laugh was ripping out of him before he could stop it, a roar of laughter that shook his frame and made the very tips of his foot-wings wiggle. "Oh my gosh, you should've seen your FACE! Priiiiiiiceless," he grinned, dancing away from her on fleet hooves, tail flagging in the air like a ruby banner. That was how Etain was: Domovoi this, Domovoi that, Domovoi you're a royal prince, prince of the Faeries, defender of justice, you have duty, BLAH BLAH BLAH! He tossed his head in the air. Same story, every day of his life.

What happened to having fun? He couldn't be royal AND have a good time? He couldn't train with Mom and like staring up at the clouds, forming shapes in his mind and having them come to life? Why not--that wasn't fair. He was only going to be a kid for a little while longer before something big happened... He wanted to enjoy it, was that such a crime?

"Well, we are related. Sorry." He flicked an ear, raised an eyebrow, and snuck a look over at Mom and Dad--standing together, talking quietly between each other. They didn't seem worried and no one was yelling--just his sister. He snaked his neck out and nipped her flank, gentle yet firm. "Why does it matter so much, being 'royal'? What defines us as royalty anyway, princess Etain of the Fairfolk?"

Sometimes it took the stallion every bit of his stubborn nature to not try to throttle his mate. If she thought that he was completely oblivious to her own jumpiness with him, she was insane. Or worse – if she just didn’t have a care about it. Or worst – if she knew and really didn’t care. These thoughts bothered him from time to time, but he was wearing her down. Much the way the ocean wears wood down til its downright soft… He would keep after her.

He watched her closely as she took all the time she needed to answer him, and her couldn’t help but want to cuddle her close to him. She really was a sweetheart – a candy center, right? Lord, it drove him crazy to be around her but that’s how you made a lovemate. Love was not being happy constantly, it was being in horrendous pain constantly and those moments of bliss made it worth it. If there was no pain, there would never be anything to measure happiness to. Moments like the birth of his children.

Moments like when she decided to come back to him after having disappeared for such a long time.

“You worry too much my pet, there is so much to living that needs nothing more than enjoyment. Too often life is wasted by those that spend the whole time worrying. Look at them? They’re healthy, they’re beautiful and they’re precious in a way that no one ever understands til they have children of their own.” Man, today was a bit too heavy for Oberon, where was some normalcy? “Normal is as normal does. Do you know how often I’m mocked for what I believe? Our family takes care of the Fae-kind and yet we’re frequently written off as crackpots. Oh my dearest pet. Just breathe.”

Whatever Oberon had been about to say was cut off by a seriously high-pitched squeal. It looked like the kids were back at it. Again.

Xx

Why of all the indignities! Etain was a princess, not someone to be laughed at! What did this boy think he was doing? Oh, if only daddy would listen to her about how much of a Prince her brother truly wasn’t. Instead he would just tell funny stories about fighting with his own sister growing up. What did those stories matter to her anyway? She had never ever met Auntie Mab anyways. “You.. you.. oh YOU!” the final you came out as a shrill squeal and dainty hooves stomped the ground angrily. A mix between a temper tantrum and the banging of a proverbial gavel is what the action equated to.

She would have order and she was going to have him stop acting like this or it’d be the last think she did. Why did her brother have such a hard time acting his own age? Oh, he was so going to get it before the end of today. She’d just have to make sure mamma and daddy weren’t watching.

“Domovoi of the Fairfolk, if I should even bother using that title with someone as.. as.. COMMON as you! What is your problem? Do you really think we’re supposed to act like heathens!? You know that the Fae are watching right this minute.” Irritated by the nipping Etain pinned her ears back and went in for a bite, not sure what she would do if she actually got a bite of her brother. Ladies, especially princess were not supposed to bite one another – but oh boy, it would be worth it with a brother like hers!

“Prince of the boorish!”

Aleksei stood tall listening to her mate, his soft voice like velvet to her ears. Sometimes she didn’t understand him, didn’t feel like there was enough between them to keep going. Sometimes she felt that she failed him, that he deserved love and that was more than she could give… But still she held on tight, refusing to let him go now that she’d found him… Maybe that was selfish on her part, to tie him to her when there were other fish in the sea—mares who could love him and adore him and swoon over his charm. Other mares would—he was kooky, but he was sweet… Too sweet for her sometimes.

Unable to find words to reply with—this often happened with her—Aleksei took his advice. Just breathe—so she took a deep breath in and let it out slowly, shifting her weight so that she was pressed against his side, their bodies touching. She lowered her neck and nuzzled him, nipping at his mane as her wing spread across his back. “You’re right. They are beautiful…and they’re ours.” She smiled as Domovoi and Etain bickered—as was usual, apparently, according to Oberon. She hadn’t had siblings and she hadn’t been raised to be carefree.

But she was herself, and that was okay.

xxx

Domovoi laughed, dancing around her from left and right, red eyes alight with excitement. It was just too fun to get a rise out of Etain, too fun when she threw a royal—pun intended—hissy fit right in front of Mom and Dad and NOTHING happened. Prince, princess, it was all the same to him. He shook his head, flaring his wings as tall as they would go, the feathers gleaming in the sunlight. He planted all four hooves on the ground—and then the little snot BIT HIM! He squealed, rearing back and snorting. Ears flat for a moment, he snaked away from her and then stamped his hoof to get her attention.

“Ettie, I don’t care. None of that really matters to me, doesn’t matter to what I want. I might be young, but…I don’t want to be royalty. I don’t want to be a fighter, a defender of justice. I don’t want to hurt anyone or kill anyone or be anyone’s enemy… I want to go out and make friends and make people happy. I want to fall in love with the perfect girl—even if she’s a kalona. I just…this life seems so meaningless, so…lame. I want to have fun with my life—and that doesn’t involve being a prince.” His smile was proud. “And by the way, the Fae think it’s funny that we fight. They like a little trouble now and then.” With a laugh, he danced off behind their parents.

Oberon felt himself tensing up for just a moment when she started to n** at his neck and then he relaxed into her and let the laughter that was usually bubbling just under the surface roll out. He had grown so much because of his mate, and he had calmed a bit. He would always be ridiculous, it was his nature and he tried to find some whimsy every single day. Retaliating to her nips he lowered his head to her check and returned the nipping, gently so as to not hurt. Did she realize how far she had come? That she had actually initiated contact between them? He’d fight to keep what was his… This was why. His Lexi, -- so full of starch and valor. Little did she realize how much softer she was becoming.

“Ahh yes, they’re most certainly ours and I have a feeling that we’re going to have to separate them soon.” … three…two…one… Etain went for blood. Oberon couldn’t help but prop up a hind foot and comment to his mate, “Yanno, she gets that temper from her mother, I surely don’t have it in me to bite like that.” They would have to step in somewhere soon because their children were going to escalate… as usual.

“Yanno… I’d say Etain is more like you than me really… and Domo? Ahh he’s a chip off the ole block.” Oberon spoke carelessly, as if their young weren’t circling around them--Definitely fighting.

xxxx

Etain felt more than a little bit of satisfaction at her retaliaton on her brother’s smart mouth. One of these days she was really gonna give him a good knocking around… Ugh! How did anyone put up with little brothers?!? After her bite, she glanced at her parents and almost wanted to roll her eyes. Dad was so goo-goo eyed over Mom that he rarely caught anything and Mom had been distracted lately. She liked mom a lot better when she wasn’t preaching and nagging about things that had to do with fighting. She was a flutter baby. Pure fae, and a princess to boot. Not a soldier.

Catching her nickname from her brother, Etain squealed herself and started to bob and weave to get around her parents, “How many times have I told you not to call me that! My name is not Ettie! Ettie is an awful name! Simply awful!” Etain, now that was a perfectly royal, beautiful name. “The Fae think YOU should be nicer to me. They’ve told me that they want to help me out by causing mischief for you but I’ve convinced them that’s not nice! Maybe I should let them loose!” The filly, fully embroiled in a several generation long delusion, believed with all her might that the Fae Folk could and would help her out. Especially since mom and dad weren’t breaking up their fight right now!

She smiled as he laughed—he had a nice laugh, a laugh that promised fun…but also naughty things—though naughty things had led to the bickering foals now circling around them like vultures. She shook her head at his n** against her cheek, so gentle as was his nature and she let out a laugh of her own—soft, rusty from disuse, but still a laugh, a glimpse into the wounded soul of the red angeni mare. She was growing, she realized that, and she was glad…because holding in all those emotions, it wasn’t normal or natural and it just ended up in frustration and anger. She hadn’t been angry in months, not since she’d fled… Not since before the foals were born.

Then Domovoi squealed and darted.

“I think you’re correct…” She cocked a hoof at the feel of Domovoi stepping on her long tail, a warning that came without a thought—but she tamped it back down and flattened her hoof to the ground. She would not kick her son, but old habits died hard. She looked at Etain, fiery temper in her beautiful eyes, ears pinned flat against her skull…yes, perhaps had she been born with Angeni wings, Etain would’ve been a better candidate to carry on the bloodline. Domo was too…soft, too...gentle and carefree.
As Etain chased Domovoi, Aleksei decided to move. Swift, she placed her large body between the two foals, flaring all of her wings to full length, ears pinned against her skull as she nipped the air, a warning at Etain. Domovoi was somewhere behind Oberon and she trusted her mate to have her back. “Alright, enough. Why do you always have to fight?”

Xxx

Domovoi laughed as they wound circles around Mom and Dad, his wings pressed against his back to give him a little more speed. “Oh, Ettie… Why can’t you see that you can be a princess AND have a cutesy nickname? I like it—it fits you. Ettie, future queen of the Fairfolk.”

Another laugh, tossing his head back—but it was short lived as Mom lurched forwards with deadly grace, her wings making her look large and intimidating and Domo knew not to tick Aleksei off. He pinned his ears and skittered backwards, slinking behind Oberon and tucking himself against his Dad’s side. “Uhoh…” He glanced up at his father, ready to suck it up and take his punishment for fighting—whatever that involved… He stared at Etain, facing their mother’s wrath, thankful they weren’t in each other’s shoes. Poor poor Ettie…

Oberon felt the urge to groan when things began to get serious. As much as he loved the children, if it had been left up to them they probably would be heathens entirely. His mate was good at handing out punishments and discipline. Sure, she was always fair with her actions but man… sometimes when the kids cried he wanted to tell them that mom and dad were just kidding and to go on about their business. Of course, Lex would have had his head for doing that sort of thing and he didn’t really feel like having himself served up on a platter. Not that she would do that to him, but he’d be damned if she wasn’t fully capable of it.

Oberon swun his body so that his rump and Lexi’s rump were side by side – Domovoi probably was thinking that he had just gotten the bigger side of the stick by having him instead of mamma to deal with, but he was afraid he’d have to agree this time. Lexi had been laughing and relaxed and now she was in full on warrior mode. The problem with that was Domovoi was currently the reason why he wasn’t getting to watch his mate in all her glory. Pinning his ears and narrowing his eyes into slits, Oberon stared at Domo and hoped to god that the foal would keep his mouth shut. His hopes didn’t extend that high for Etain. She had as much temper as her mamma and the mouth of Oberon. The idea of dealing with her as a teenager occasionally made him miss bachelorhood… Just a little bit.

“Your mother asked a rather valid question Dom, you best be thinking of an answer.”

XxX

Etain had been moving full-blast until she found herself face to face with a very upset mamma. The indignity of this! Domovoi was going to dance away looking like a fresh rose and smelling just as sweet and mamma was going to be mad at her! It just wasn’t fair.

“I DON’T’. –HE- does.” Stomping a delicate hoof, Etain glared daggers at her brother briefly and as best she could. She mostly just got to spend a moment glaring at his hoof. “It’s not fair! He doesn’t act like a gentleman at all! He makes me so mad! It’s not fair! I’m a princess! He’s a prince! Why doesn’t he act right!?” Getting herself all worked up, the sentences came out as a mix of screeching and staccato. She was going to have a melt-down soon. Tears and theatrics when she probably had needed a nap a short hour or two ago. Buckle up.
