The spring wind blew the long grasses to and fro, carrying on the air the scent of the nearby ocean. The sunset painted the sky in hues of reds and golds, brightening the world in a scope of color—and beneath the rays of said sunset, a little silver foal was roaming, ears swiveled forwards as he took in the world around him. The world wasn’t new—not anymore—but Gypsy Nightshade was one to take everything in, to never waste a moment of his life. Because life was awesome and he didn’t want to miss it. The wind blew a gust against his short mane, making it ruffle and tickling Shade behind the ears. With a soft laugh, he did a little pirouette and took off, hooves pounding against the earth, wings flapping in the air as he tried—and failed—to fly….and landed with an, “Oomph!” face-first in the dirt.

Gypsy Bane charged full-force after her brother. Mamma had told them that they shouldn’t travel too far from the teepee today because – well, she didn’t really remember the reason why, but mamma had said so! Huffing mid-charge, Bane couldn’t help but feel like an aggravated mother hen herself. It’s like her stupid big-brother went out of his way to always disobey their mamma. If anybody had ever bothered to ask the filly she would have admitted to being jealous of her brother’s pretty red wings and how much more dainty he was than her. She was the girl, she was supposed to be delicate. Instead she was super tall and kind of stocky already. “NIIIIIGHTSSHHAAAAADE! OOF!” Lost in her own thoughts and oblivious to her brother’s plight of being face-first in the dirt, Bane tumbled over him and landed with a hard thud on her side beside him. The pain took her breath away for a moment and then her eyes started to tear up a bit, “What’s wrong with you!?!” (Srs brat-complex xDDD)

Nightshade heard his sister long before he felt her tumble over the top of him to land a few feet ahead. He let out another soft grunt as he flopped to a stand-still, looking up at his little sister from underneath his flop of silver bangs. "What?" he asked, tipping his head to the side, wings flared out behind him. Gracefully he leapt to his feet and stamped a hoof on the ground, his puzzled look quickly turning into a grin. "I'm bored. Let's go explore. We still have a bunch of time before night comes. We won't go too far, just...far enough." He pranced in place, his little tail waggling with excitement as he sprang off to dance around her, like a spindly little fawn. "Pleasepleasepleaseeee!"

(Shade is so much like Soul XD) Bane forced the tears back completely and got up with as much grace as she could muster. Her little sides heaved with a mix of irritation and being out of breath from charging after her brother for quite a bit of a run. “You know that Mamma told use to stay close! Last time I went on a ‘venture with you I ended up in just as much trouble!” A bit of a sulky pout, but Bane could already feel herself being swayed over to the dark-side. The place where she broke the rules and ran wild, “We got in sooooo much trouble last week! Today’s the VERY first day we’ve been allowed to go ANYWHERE. “ Oh man, it would be so fun to get to go and do something. A week spent at home receiving a few lectures and even more watchful stares had left Bane just as itchy to explore but even more reluctant to get in trouble, “’Sides! It’s not like you have a good idea on where we would go!”

Nightshade grinned at the way his sister pouted--she always pouted when they got in trouble, it was like her natural reaction. Shade wasn't a pouter--he took his momma's yelling with a straight face...and then happened to forget why she was mad. And he was so BORED. Why did Momma have to be so controlling, anyway? "But what she doesn't know won't hurt her, right? Right?" Cue goofy smile, red eyes gleaming with spunk. "Trouble. We're always in trouble. Why can't we have fun in between those times? I just can't sit still, Bane. I wanna play. I'm boreeeeeeed." He did a little spin, nipping at his sister's flank, nudging his face against her neck. "Well...what if I let you pick where we went this time?" He honestly didn't care--he just wanted to go: go fast, go hard, go NOW NOW NOW.

The petulant look on Bane’s face seemed to be stuck as of late. She used to be pretty mellow but hormones were changing and emotions were developing. She was jealous fairly frequently and it wasn’t fair that her brother was so happy all the time. Why did he still act like they had just pop out of the basket?
“That’s not true and you know it! You know that mamma –always- catches us when we do something.” Soul, who had been raised with a very absent-minded mother had taken to motherhood with more than a little bit of gusto. “We CAN play, but we’re not supposed to go any further than the bottom of this hill! We already broke the rules!”
Oh, the temptation to pick something crazy was there…. Maybe she could get him to stay home. “I can fly better than you!” The proverbial white glove had just been thrown. Would he pick it up? Was it time to duel it out? Bane knew good and well that neither of them had any flying prowess yet – nor would they til full adulthood.

Nightshade sighed heavily, a hiss of sound escaping his mouth. Bored, bored boreeed. “Baaane,” he whined, but she was right—Momma always caught them, no matter where they were, or no matter what they were doing. She seemed to have eyes in the back of her head. The bottom of the hill was like a prision, an invisible fence that kept the foals herded safely home… Safe was for suckers, Shade wanted to go and explore the great unknown! The minute he was old enough to break away from Momma’s controlling (yet loving) behavior, he was going to fly far, fly free, and fly solo! Maybe someday he would find a pretty girl and have a family—but he would let his foals roam free. Sure, under supervision. Shade would be happy if Momma would just…adventure WITH them. At Bane’s next words, Shade’s head whipped up and around, garnet eyes narrowing at his sister. She was bigger than him, thanks to the wind heritage. Her wings were also a little more sound, a little more developed. His… His were dainty and fragile…but in his opinion, they were prettier. “Flying duel?” He glanced back and forth, ears pricking forwards, silver tail wagging. “You’re on. BUT if I win, we’re going on an adventure tomorrow. No buts. Got it, sis?”

Oh crap. What had she done? Bane thought with a definite trickle of fear. She was not any better at flying than her brother was save for the fact that she was able to glide further…. Not that he knew she had been practicing regularly on the sly. Mamma had lectured her that she was supposed to be an adult before her wings would even be able to work. But, in her opinion, she could fly a little bit. If anyone were to actually watch what the foals were about to attempt it was look a lot like a jumping down the hill contest with some wing flailing involved. Of course their mother was right. Foals their age did not have any true measurable flight ability, it was all in their minds and if they believed enough they felt as if they were flying. A simple trick of the mind, but definitely nothing more than jumping and trying to not fall on their heads was what their game would amount to. Safety did seem a little bit boring, but there had to be a reason for mamma to always be in such a tizzy when it came to them going and doing… things. “So dainty-wings… You really think that you can beat me? AND you want to wager something that you can I both know we’re going to get caught and get in trouble for?” Hm… The filly took her time, ruffling her wings and thinking carefully over what she wanted. “ooookay… so if I win YOU have to do ALLLL the chores for a week, no, A MONTH… AND you have to swear you won’t even –try- to do something mamma says isn’t okay for a month tooooo!” No way he would take that bet. Her brother was a born trouuuublemaaaakerrrrr.

Nightshade bounced around his sister, excited to actually be doing something, even if it was on Bane's terms. He couldn't fly very well, but he tried, oh how he tried. He would give this flying duel all he had, and he would win. He would be VICTORIOUS! At the nickname and the rules of the bet, Shade narrowed his red eyes at his sister, a playful grin on his face. Doing both their share of chores sounded un-fun...but being trapped with Mom and Dad and doing nothing fun sounded even MORE un-fun. "Fine. You know what? Good! We're gonna FLY. We're gonna duel and then I'm gonna beat your tail and THEN we'll do what I want for a month, no questions asked. You HAVE to agree, and if I win you HAVE to do what I say." He wiggled, hyper energy racing through his veins and it was like his soul was on fire. "And I want to explore even farther than before." He stamped a hoof for good measure.

Bane looked around nervously. So far she couldn’t hear mamma or daddy coming to their impending doom, but she had a bad feeling about this. For whatever reason whenever she tried to do something…. It was at the last possible second that mamma appeared out of nowhere to give her the lecturing of a lifetime. Daddy, he was more laid-back and just let mamma have her go. In fact, she didn’t really remember ever seeing daddy mad.
“I don’t think that that’s a good idea…” Oh no, she couldn’t back out now, “But its ok because I’M going to win and you’re going to lose.” With that Bane put herself at the very top of the hill and took a deep breath. And gulped. It seemed like an awful far way down to her. What if her brother got hurt? She would feel bad, even if he drove her crazy like all the time. “I’m gonna go first to uh, show you how it’s done.” Yeah. She’d go first and then he’d chicken out.
She backed up a few steps, took a leap forward into nothingness and –
Xxx
“GYPSY NIGHTSHADE! GYPSY BANE! What exactly do you two think you’re up to?” The ever watchful eyes of a mother were standing at the bottom of the hill. She had snuck up on her children, listened to their bickering and felt quite a bit of tugging at her heartstrings. These two brats were her lifeblood besides her mate, and he had been telling her lately to take it more easy with them. They’re not made of glass, etc so on and so forth.
Too bad it was hard to see them as anything other than the tiny babies she had carried for so long and had carefully helped into their baskets. They were growing up and if she didn’t loosen the reins on them they were going to do something stupid, like hurt themselves by throwing their young bodies off the top of a large hill and falling the whole way down.
Dang it. Dante had been right.
She glanced behind her, wondering where he was at now… He had been right and now she didn’t really know how upset to be… The pair could really have hurt themselves but if they were doing it to just get a sense of freedom…..
Parenting was hard.

“Well see, little sister mine,” Shade sing-songed as they headed to the top of the hill. He was practically vibrating he was so excited, even though he knew they were both doomed. Dooooooomed…they couldn’t fly. He sucked at it, but if it got Bane off his back for now? He was game. He danced up the hill like a hyperactive puppy, nudging and poking at his sister with his muzzle. Fasterrrrr, he wanted to DO this. He was pretty pumped, no lie. They would both fail…but it would be fun? Or so he hoped. With a determined smile on his face, he stamped the very top of the hill with small dainty hooves and whinnied, a war-cry in his mind.
And then it was over, their momma’s voice carried on the air just as Bane jumped. Shade winced, pressed his eyes shut, and then peeked. Momma AND Dad were staring at them… Oh boy. Deep trouble. With a small giggle, he bolted over to Dante’s side and yowled, “It was all BANE’S IDEA!”
Momma did NOT look amused…
Xxx
Dante stood stoic several paces behind his mate, his steel gray body held tense even as the flutter wings on his back opened and shut with the delicateness of a butterfly—but don’t let that fool you. Oh lord above, he knew it. Their kids were growing up and despite how much Soul yearned to keep them as teeny, tiny little foals on spindly legs, let’s face it—they were growing up and fast and they were on that hard line between being pushover parents and being too controlling, and it was damned hard. Hell, he never WANTED to be a father, it just sort of happened. Just like love, it sprang up on you when you were unsuspecting, then BAM you’ve got two little brats that are little replicas of yourself looking up at you for EVERYTHING.
Parenting sucked. He couldn’t wait until they were grown up.
Not that he didn’t love them. He did, and once he got over that initial shock and the need to fly to the end of the world just to jump off the edge? He was actually pretty damn proud. He and Soul were newbies at this parenting thing, mistakes were to be expected, right?
Shade barreled down the hill, wailing about something or another—his son was loud, something he must’ve gotten from his mother—and then raced past Soul and bumped shoulders with Dante and Dante couldn’t help but let out a little chuckle at the looks on Shade and Bane’s little faces. He flicked an ear, showing how much they annoyed him, hiding back the smirk that threatened to rise to the surface.
He cleared his throat and his husky voice rumbled like thunder. “Well what did you expect? She has eyes in the back of her skull,” motioning to his mate.

She had just about been ready to launch herself off into the wild blue yonder when mamma’s voice had sent her crashing down. Luckily she had managed to catch herself before doing any damage. Imagine how mad mamma would have been if she had hurt herself to boot? Bane felt her mis-matched colored eyes beginning to well up and she was terrified of the hardcore yelling-fest that was almost certain to begin. She didn’t even want to fight her brother when he blamed her. It had been her idea to try flying, but she never would have come up with the stupid idea if her stupid brother had been able to follow stupid rules every once in a stupid while.
Bane’s ears drooped down and her little tail tucked itself under. The picture of sadness with tears welled up. “I’m sorry mamma…” Was it bad when she didn’t even think about getting in trouble with her pappa?
xXx
Soul looked back at her mate and felt a tug of irritation. There was her oldest baby looking like she was going to be hacked into little pieces and he was cracking a joke about her having eyes in the back of her head. They were young and figuring things out, she frequently pondered just what exactly she had gotten herself into by having foals at the age she had. Just barely old enough to have them had been their decision. Shifting carefully, her full tail lifted up in a fan to avoid dragging the ground, Soul moved over to her daughter and sighed deeply before tucking her close to her side. “Hush now baby. I think perhaps I’ve been keeping you two under too many rules.”
Not that she was going to let them get away with deliberately disobeying her direct order…
“Be that as it may young lady and young gentleman.” She cast a reproachful glance at her youngest son. “You’re both in trouble but for reasons that you’re probably not expecting.” She didn’t know why but sometimes it felt good to bring down the hammer so to speak. Maybe it was because it made her feel like she wasn’t as neglectful and forgetful as her own mother had been with her. “You, young lady, were about to do something that you not only know you can’t do but you were quite possibly going to do real damage.” She cast her gaze over to Shade, “You, young man, very obviously lied to your mamma just now. You can’t tell me that you wanted absolutely nothing to do with any of this… Now. What you’re both in trouble equally for? Not coming and talking to me or your pappa about your feelings.”
“What do you think Dante, how should be punish our pair of mischief makers?”

Shade almost giggled at the sad puppy-eyed look that Bane gave their mother--oh the hilarity!--but he forced his lips to remain in a pensive, yet worried look as he glanced between his mother and father. At Soul's stern voice, he lowered his head and let his tuft of silver bangs obscure crimson eyes, ears and tail drooping. Dangit... "I'm sorry, Momma. I'm just so...bored. I want to get out there, I want to explore. I want to see the whole entire world!" Enthusiasm zipped back into his tone as he gave a half-buck and trotted over to Soul, pressing his little head against her neck. He even mouthed the word 'Sorry' to his sister. So maybe some of this had been his fault... but he wasn't totally guilty and Bane knew it.
xxx
Dante pressed his lips together and straightened up, watching as his children tried to weasle back into Soul's good graces, and at the look shared between Shade and Bane, his lips curved into a half-smirk, half-smile. Damn, if he wasn't proud of them, of creating them. His movements fluid and effortless, he strode over to his place at Soul's side--a place, despite everything they'd been through, he would fight to keep--and nuzzled her, teeth scraping at her jaw.
He looked back down at their kids--so young, yet soon they'd be all grown up and flying the nest and someday have kids of their own--and then his dark eyes met Soul's. "Hmm...Difficult to say. What they've done--" A sharp-eyed glance at Shade, and then Bane, to get their attention; "Was idiotic, stupid and reckless. Jumping off a damn hill, Gypsy Bane? And Gypsy Nightshade, wandering off? What if a walker had been prowling? You would've been a kitty cat snack." He snorted, flicking his tail. "Tasty little morsels, and then your poor mother would've cried. Shame." But there was a twinkle in his eye despite the harshly spoken words.
"So now, because of your recklessness, you're grounded to the field...until you pick up each and every fallen stick and limb that fell from that storm last week. So until that field is sparkly clean? No fun for you." He caught Shade sticking his tongue out and huffed. "Double for you, pal."
He looked at Soul and shared with her the tiniest smile, a smile the foals wouldn't see. Then he straightened up and grew gruff once again. "March it."

Bane knew absolutely nothing of the sort. In her beleagured mind her brother had MADE her go away from home and made her think of an idea to keep them both entertained. If it hadn’t been for him she would have stayed home like a good girl and not gotten into any trouble at all. Her wounded sense of pride was salved a bit at the whispered apology and she pushed back against her brother to signal ‘apology accepted.’ The best part about being a child was the ease in which forgiveness was given. “Awwwh, Papa…” The bit of whining came out of Bane’s mouth before she could help it and her ears pinned back in worry. Mamma and pappa were quite good at doleing out punishment when they earned it and back talking was not tolerated. “I-I mean.. I’ll go start right now ‘cuz I can get TWICE as much done as Shade. He’s a sissy!” With the taunt thrown over her shoulder, Bane took off to the far corner of the field, planning on working her way back. XXX Soul relaxed against her mate’s side lazily and enjoyed just spending time with him. She really couldn’t believe how handsome he was. Their children were so beautiful, and she really thought that a lot of that had to do with how handsome their daddy was. This. This was why she had him as her mate though. She had needed him to support her on this, and validate that they had been misbehaving. Her maternal instincts were overly strong, typical of young mothers. He helped her know when she was being too strict. Sometimes, like now, he doled out the punishment to keep her from feeling like a wicked step mother constantly. Soul watched him from the corner of her eye and kept her eyes downcast. They would be laughing soon about the foals punishment, not in a mean way but just at their reaction. As if their life was going to be over. Bane’s whine didn’t get past her, but she figured they had probably had enough for now. Keeping quiet Soul watched Bane take off running and figured that soon her son would be following suit. Shade had never been one to be left out, even if it was something as mundane as picking up sticks. She tossed her bangs out of her eyes and nibbled down Dante’s neck carefully. “You know.. we’re going to be in trouble if they decide they like cleaning the field and even once they’re grown they never ever leave our sides or field.” That was whispered in his ear, low enough to keep Shade from overhearing but she followed it with a soft girlish laugh.
