< Higher. >

What do you mean higher! If I aim any higher it'll go over the damn thing.

< There is an 85% chance that aiming higher will achieve optimal vertical distance for hitting the dummy. >

Chel sighed, sick and tired of hearing numbers and big words. She was tired of missing it for the thousandth time. Instead of arguing, she merely lifted the bow an inch higher. Taking a deep breath, she let the arrow loose, and then watched glumly as it sailed straight over the dummy. A sigh escaped both beings as all they could do was watch the arrow bury its tip into the soft earth.

Happy?

< I am not equipped with such an emotion, but I would suggest aiming more to the left and lower. >

This was getting absolutely nowhere.

/Human songs are weird,/ Gir declared as he listened to Evan recite cadences in his head while he jogged.

They're not really songs, Evan explained, they're meant to--

/Weeeeeird./

Evan rolled his eyes at his weapon, pushing his pace as the training fields and the buildings came into view. He was almost done, and then he could take a shower, make lunch, maybe train some--his train of thought got a little derailed as a flash of pink caught his attention. He turned on instinct to see what it was, and was pleasantly surprised to see a familiar, vibrantly-hued ponytail. He grinned and changed course, heading towards the fields; his smile grew wider as he made out the Sun emblem on the back of the figure's coat.

"Hey," Evan called as he jogged towards Chelsea, making sure he was still far enough away that she wouldn't accidentally turn around and smack him with whatever weapon she ended up with. "Looks like Bix's trick worked, huh? Welcome to Sun."

Hottie alert.

"Hey!" she jeered back, equally happy to see the other sun hunter. Was it because he was a friend or because he looked so damn good all sweaty and running- Chelsea would never tell. Luckily she didn't miss a single beat, not swayed by his looks even a bit.

Looking down at her coat, Chelsea drunkenly did a twirl to show off the emblem a little better. "I guess so! So we're all like a big happy family, yeah?" Chel sort of had a strange image of this place.

< My calculations tell me there is a 76% ch- >

"So does the voice ever go away or ...?" She really hoped he would go away. It was kind of annoying.

Just a little.

Evan wolf-whistled as Chelsea spun around. "Looks good on you," he said, nodding in approval. "I can't speak for all of the divisions, of course, but Sun's pretty laid back," he said in answer to her question. "We had a party not too long ago and everything. Lots of pie. It ended in a food fight, of course." At least, that had been the last thing Evan remembered before he got completely distracted by making out with one of his--their, now, he supposed--division mates. Good times.

Evan had to fight to quell the bright smile that threatened to break free at the memory, allowing it to turn into something more sympathetic at Chel's next question. "Unfortunately not," he replied. "You're kind of stuck with it. It's kind of the flip side to all of this. Why, is your weapon acting up already?" That would be a damn shame; it was hard enough to do what they did as it was without the added distraction of having to work with a partner you couldn't stand.

Who could deny it? Chelsea soaked up the wolf whistle and the attention. "Excellent," she commented in a very Wayne's-World sort of voice at the idea of a party that ended in food fighting. It sounded chaotic, and Chel liked chaotic. Sure it would've been a b***h to clean up, but who said it wouldn't be worth the effort?

< I can confirm we are bonded. >

"He's ah- ... quirky. Doesn't really march to my drum, y'know?" She shrugged, resummoning her bow to rest on her hip. A grin lit up for Evan, idea sparking in her endlessly one-sighted mind. "Y'wanna try a little thumping?"

Evan nodded in complete understanding. "That's not too bad, then. I've heard some weapons can be pretty mean. Mine, he just never shuts up. He's like a kid on pop rocks, Coke, and crack."

There was a hesitant pause inside Evan's mind. /Am I supposed to be offended at that?/

Yes.

/Hey!/

A smile grew to match Chel's own as Evan took note of her weapon. "We can," he said, Gir materializing in his hand with little more than a thought. "Can't say I've ever fought someone with a bow, though.

Chel shot a look down to her bow, shrugging nonchalantly. "I'm a lot better than I thought I'd be actually." Well no, it was because her weapon allowed for a minor mastery of the bow, but that wasn't the point. "It's a LOT harder than link's crossbow training ..."

Before Evan could get the jump on her, she perkily said, "Okay! Ready?" She ran back a few steps and, with her tongue stuck out, fired a single arrow at his chest. A direct hit! "Whoo ten points!"

Link who what now? Evan paused a moment to try to puzzle that one out, leaving him totally unprepared for Chel's attack. He staggered backwards as the arrow flew into his chest, pain blossoming around the point of impact but, thankfully, not puncturing the shield.

That s**t hurt, though.

"Yeah, that was a nice shot," he admitted, "but don't let your guard down." It didn't take much for Evan to close the distance between them, and he lashed out with his sword, aiming for her arm.

For such a bulky dude, Evan sure could move quickly. Chel wasn't used to anything more athletic than her daily workout, lacrosse team (which admittedly, got aggressive) and partying. So this was quite a change. She'd never had a military man charging right for her with a giant sword in his hand.

Nor had she ever been knocked over by one, or cut by one.

< You'll find there are no cuts, I am sufficiently working. >

She dared to open one of her eyes, looking down and expect blood and guts. "Hey what gives?" She then (from the ground) shot one more arrow. It only grazed his skin, but it was enough to satisfy her for now.

Oops. Evan hadn't meant to knock Chel down, but it seemed like she was okay--okay enough to shoot him again, anyway. He decided right then and there that bows were his least favorite type of weapon to face down, partly because he had no idea how to begin to defend against something that moved as fast as an arrow with something as un-shieldlike as a sword, and partly because they were annoying as hell.

Evan winced through the sheepish grin he gave Chel as the arrow skated along his shield. "That's the real benefit of the voice in your head," he explained. "It's more than just a weapon, it's also a shield that protects you from things that would kill a regular person. No more paper cuts, no more burning yourself on a hot stove, you're better, faster, stronger."

His smile widened as he lightly swatted her on the leg. "Now get up. We're not done yet."

Chel frowned, patting her stomach down. It was sort of unsettling not feeling damage or seeing it. Certainly it was a good thing, and yes she still had a little sting, but nothing like what it should have been. It was creepy.

"If you say so. I guess it at least let's me feel better about kicking your butt."

Yes she went there.

She went there with another arrow.

"That's the--ow, dammit," as the arrow bounced off of Evan's shield. <******** arrows.

"That's the spirit," Evan managed to get out, "but if you want to kick my butt, you're gonna have to try a little harder than that," he teased. He could already see why Chel was a Sun. She had the same abundance of sass and never-say-die that the other women in the division seemed to possess. That suited him just fine--it made her a better sparring partner. He no u'd her right back, not letting her get too far away as he went in for another swing.

< Chelsea the power which I possess has been charged to a maximu- >

Yeah yeah, can it dexter, Chel chided, watching Evan with a wide grin on her face. This was relatively entertaining, and watching Evan dance about was pretty fun too.

Suddenly her bow exploded in a shower of light, and instead of creating a dazzling stunning effect, it just backfired and blinded Chelsea.

Chel squinted at Evan's hand, trying to discern fingers from the air. "Three. I think?"

She rubbed her head, trying to figure out what had happened. Last she checked, her bow didn't have a giant lightbulb on it, nor was it equipped with fireworks (though that would be ******** awesome).

"Any chance you ah, know what that was?" she asked Evan. Maybe it was a thing that happened to all hunters? If anyone would know, it would be Evan.
