Who: Ronan (Arana Kamina), Cesc and Vivi (Atmadja) Where: Gambino Aquarium When: After hours, early January What: A delivery of sweet treats
-----
Laughter drifted through the staff room at the Gambino aquarium, streamers draped over lockers and drinks being passed around. It wasn't a large celebration by any means but it was still nice, a relaxed get together to celebrate a veteran staff member's birthday - though Ronan had a sneaking suspicion there would have been a party even without the birthday. Already some of his coworkers had been going on and on about a bakery delivery they were going to get later, complete with phrases of "best ever" and "to die for." Nothing like food to motivate people to go the extra mile.
Seeing a coworker raise a bottle to him Ronan tapped his own to it with a grin, both of them taking a drink and settling back.
"So, you going to be okay getting home late tonight?"
Ronan nodded, taking another sip. "Kris still has a few days left on her winter break, so she'll be looking after Maili tonight. Might get a bit of complaining later, but nothing I can't deal with."
Before he could say much else cheering started at the other end of the room along with a smattering of applause. Craning his head to get a better look Ronan saw a small group of people gathering near the door and one of the tables, already forming a food line. It seemed like the fabled baked goods had arrived.

Vivi and Rhedefre walked through the service entrance of the aquarium with some difficulty. It's not that the service entrance itself was unmanageable or hard to traverse -- quite the opposite, really. All the staff had been plenty gracious and happy to see two bakery staff-members coming in with goodies in hand. It was just that Vivi, being now on the opposite side of her usual forays to the aquarium, was endlessly curious about everything in between the entrance and the staff room.
"Do you think there are penguins walking around?" she asked breathlessly over her shoulder as she and Cesc moved closer to their destination, both holding little red-striped bakery boxes. "Perhaps getting acclimated?"
"Or having a break?" Cesc ventured with a grin.
"Or having a little snack of some poor smelt? Oh! There must be some penguins around for us to see! Perhaps an otter? If only they worked in the aquarium like the humans, non? We would see them all here, and perhaps even feed them some little cookie," Vivi laughed playfully, backing into the staff door to open it.
"Hello!" The Frenchwoman said. "Delivery from Vermillion bakery?"
The words were barely out of her mouth as a line began to form. Vivi, always a crowd pleaser, opened the bakery box to show off the little fish-shaped confections within, small cookies with a simple sweet-smelling frosting atop them and tiny round silver eyes. In Cesc's box, still closed and slightly bigger, was a fish-shaped cake, a clownfish with beautiful scales and vibrant colors.
"Yes-- oh, thank you -- I hope you enjoy -- where shall we set them?" She said to at least four people at once, turning from each of them with a winsome smile. Cesc, floating behind her, spied a table where some food had already been laid out.
"Ah -- Shall I just put the cake there?" he asked politely to a man who was salivating so heavily over the sweets he could not even answer.

Ronan gave a sigh as he saw Dale go nearly comatose from how much he was salivating, resigning himself to the fact that he might as well go over and help the besieged pair with their work. Leaving his drink with the coworker after a quick apology he made his way over to the crowd, working his way through until he reached Dale and gave him a punch on the shoulder.
"Getting so worked up you can't even let the stuff to the table, fat lot of help you are," Ronan cracked, turning to the individual from the bakery - and having to push through a mental roadblock when he saw they were a raevan. "The table should be just fine," he said, clearing off a small area next to the other deserts. At this point he was dying to ask about the Lab involvement of the two from the bakery, but he figured it'd be better to wait until they could escape the crowd. The push was already getting a bit hectic.

"Wonderful," said Cesc, slowly inching away from the forming crowd to the table, setting the cake in his hands down on the clearing that Ronan provided for him. For a moment, he did not speak, opening the carton around the fish-shaped cake and slowly sliding out the cardboard, leaving it unblemished and ready to be enjoyed by the aquarium employees. He was barely done before a few camera-phones came out, snapping images of the multicolored scales.
Sliding away from the cameras' viewfinders, Rhedefre found himself beside Ronan once more. He turned for a moment toward Vivi, but finding her still chatting with other employees and handing out the sugar cookies in her own box, he turned toward the man instead. He smiled good-naturedly.
"I'm glad these seem to be making people happy. Do you all not get many parties, or should we feel special?"

Ronan found himself giving a low whistle of appreciation at the cake, impressed by the work, before giving a laugh at the raevan's question. "You should feel special. Even if parties are scarce I don't think I've ever seen things get quite this enthusiastic." He saw many people going away with cookies and the cake being cut - there were a few disappointed sighs as the scales were marred, but this was soon forgotten as people actually tasted the cake. Before he knew it Ronan found himself slapped on the back and plate of cake and some cookies were shoved into his hands by a couple coworkers.
"Some fish for for the seafood nut, eh?" Karen cracked, Ronan shaking his head but still grinning. "Har har," he said, doing his best to keep his voice deadpan. Karen shrugged, walking away. "You'll thank me in a moment."
There was another shake of his head and Ronan looked back to Cesc. "Sorry about the interruption there. I have somewhat of a reputation among my coworkers." After all, being able to eat more fish than some off the aquarium residents (as it was said, at least) was bound to get some attention. Figuring he might as well the selkie took a bite out of a cookie, and immediately his eyebrows shot up. "Wow..."
He believed the hype now.

Cesc rocked back and smiled as he watched people line up, the first person in line holding the cake knife as if he wasn't entirely sure what to do with it. It was only after a few moments that the Frei took the knife from the man and slide it gently into the poor fish's side, carving him out his slice and serving it.
After a few people went by, Cesc turned back to Ronan.
"Can I get you a piece? I'm afraid it isn't seafood flavored..."

"Sure!" Ronan said, watching the line of people move through and the sweets gradually dwindling. He had a feeling some people would have taken much more if they could, but any glutton would have glared out of the room. There was a laugh at the second line. "And that's fine, certain things probably shouldn't go together." Taking another bite the selkie thought of a time he had tried to combine the two. Needless to say, it hadn't been good.
Figuring the crowd had decreased enough Ronan turned back to the raevan, unable to hide the curiosity on his face. "I have to say though, I didn't expect the bakery to have connections to Lab 305."

"Really?" said Cesc, his eyebrows raising. He leaned forward, taking a slice of the fast-disappearing cake and handing it to the man with a smile. He had never really thought of whether his family's profession had been lab-appropriate or not. "I confess I don't really know what everyone else does..." He laughed, easy. "I wasn't around for the application process. I can't say whether they had to prove themselves or not."

"Oh!" Ronan had to give a short laugh himself. "I didn't mean to imply they weren't suited for the Lab. It's more of just a pleasant surprise." He nibbled on the cake for a moment, looking around to see if he could catch sight of the woman from the bakery. Nothing yet, but either way introductions were in order. "I'm Ronan, future guardian for the Lab myself," he said, holding out a hand.
