-insert image here later-

Del looked around at her surroundings and everything was just so pretty! The grass was pretty, the flowers were really really pretty, and over in the distance she could spot a purple butterfly!

"Hinote! Hinote! Look look look! A butterfly! Can we go take a closer look at it?" The mare pointed at it with her nose, and then started bouncing in place in excitement. Even though she has gotten older she has never outgrown that childlike innocence, or ever grew an attention span. But she never had to worry about anything attacking her, not that she ever cared because of Hinote almost always being by her side.

"Oh look! It's flying away, we should follow it and see where it goes? It would be a grand adventure!"

His ear twitching at the sound of his lovely mate's voice, he glanced up from his observation of a ladybug he'd noticed crawling about on a flower he didn't recognize. Smiling indulgently at Del'nal, he approached her side and nuzzled her lovingly. "We can if you are very still. Watch. They'll come to you." He nudged a powerful wing against Del's side as he looked around in solemn silence. He was not much of a speaker, but for his mate's sake, he spoke when he could. Still, he found that often times it was simply better for Del'nal to do all the talking--she talked enough for both of them, after all. However, Hinote thought to himself amusingly, there had been times when he had to intercept for the confusion Del'nal caused with others.

Del'nal's energetic call to follow the butterfly that had caught her attention allowed for a smile to slip onto Hinote's face. "Why don't we then, my love? Take the lead." He glanced upward for signs of his Soaru, and noting that the falcon was floating around nearby or at least scouting ahead for danger, Hinote focused his attention on his mate. There was no telling where she'd wander off to if his attention strayed, after all. Del'nal had a penchant for colliding with danger when she was simply following even the cutest squirrel she "discovered" on her day-to-day adventures. Thinking of his mate led Hinote to wonder how his children were doing. He hadn't seen hide or hair of either of them recently. Once they had grown into adulthood, Hieu Fang, his son, had announced that he wanted to learn about life in his own way, and his daughter, Skylark, had also gone off elsewhere. He wondered if either of them had found mates... he'd like grandfillies and grandcolts, he thought, surprised. Snapping out of his head, Hinote realized his mind had wandered too much, and he looked around for his ever energetic mate.

"Yay!" And with that Del bounded ahead excitedly, not waiting for Hinote to follow. Her attention was on the purple butterfly that was flying away. "Come back butterfly!" She jumped into the air and spread her wings, gliding a few feet before landing again, hoping to catch up with the butterfly.

But then out of the corner of her eye, she saw a really pretty silver flower and so she turned direction and headed that way. "Flower flower flower flower! Pretty flower yes you are!" She sang, paying no mind the direction she was going in. There was a pretty flower and she wanted it at that very second, having already forgotten about the purple butterfly.

Hinote sighed in relief as he caught sight of his mate. The butterfly long discarded, he whinnied in such a way to catch Soaru's attention. The falcon responded with a short call, and Hinote cantered after his mate. He wasn't sure what she had spotted, but he knew it had to be something "pretty." Del'nal had this thing for "pretties," be they flowers, bugs, or what have you, and considering her family, Hinote couldn't help it from time to time but to wonder why Del'nal was such a beautiful, innocent mare. "Don't stray too far from me, my heart," he called out to her. He was going to have to gallop at this rate if Del'nal continued the way she was going. He had a feeling he'd have to save her--again--from "peril," though, as he figured, trouble simply loved following his mate around, no matter how much Hinote knew Del'nal couldn't possibly have a bad bone in her body.

"Flower, flower, flower! I love flowers!" She had not heard Hinote call out to her and so she kept going after the flower. Something moved out of the corner of her eye, and so her head turned to follow it and it was a squirrel! And so her attention yet again changed and she started hopping after the fuzzy tailed creature.

"Come back please! I just want to play!" She followed after, awhile, weaving in and around the trees. After a few moments, she looked around, blinking, and realized she didn't recognize where she was at. Now she was feeling scared, and lost and no sign of Hinote anywhere. Instead of calling for help, she flopped onto the ground and curled up, trying to hide under her wings. Pretend to be a rock and you can't be eaten! And so she was pretending to be a rock.

Hinote took off at a run and spread his wings. The only way to keep up with his mate was if he was airborne, anyway. He kept an ear out for Soaru's wing beats, and hearing the his falcon familiar close behind, Hinote was soon gliding behind Del'nal, keeping himself airborne with every flap of his wings. He would tire soon, but he could stay in the air for a while--and perhaps keep his ever innocent mate out of any troubles that always seem to run across her path. He wasn't prone to yelling out to her, so he would have to either land in front of her to stop her and get her attention, or something else would have to happen. Soaru would know what to do if anything strange occurred, so Hinote was simply content to watch over his mate.

Just a rock, just a rock, just a rock. She kept repeating to herself. Hearing a small bit of rumbling, she kept her eyes closed tight and her wings wrapped even tighter around her. Del did NOT want to know what the noise was. And was not about to call for help when it could call over whatever it was that was nearby. Just pretend to be a rock. She could do it! And it'd probably the only time she's ever stayed in one spot for more than a few moments.

Hinote had lost all sight of his mate, and he was slowly beginning to panic. He hadn't heard hide or tail of his lovely mate, and she was abnormally silent in this situation. Where was she? "Soaru!" His voice rising due to his worry and panic, "search over there, please! Del'nal can't have gone too far from me." He landed with some force as he began trying to scent out his mate. Del'nal being so quiet was disturbing and he had had his eyes on her until she'd somehow vanished. And all because he had to look away and up for a second so he didn't crash into anything while he was flying. And now, now in that second of flight adjustment, he'd lost Del. Hinote did not like the notion that he had been so careless when he was not a careless stallion. Soaru let out a screech. Hinote started into a gallop and then launched into the air, following his familiar's voice. Soaru seemed to have located Del.

Soaru circled above where he could barely make out Del'nal's shivering, scared form. Being smaller than Hinote, if he dived at the right angle he could lead Del'nal to safety. Letting out another screech for Hinote to follow, Soaru began to dive. He knew Hinote was probably at the verge of an all out panic. Much as Soaru wasn't sure from time to time that Del'nal was good for Hinote, he shrugged it away since Hinote was happy with her. And he picked up speed, slowly but surely aiming for Del'nal.

Rumble Rumble Rumble, there the noise was again! Del tried to squeeze even harder into a ball. Was the ground shaking? The starry mare could swear the ground was shaking and it was scaring her more.

Just be a rock, just be a rock just be a rock! What if it was a GIANT coming to get her and eat her alive! Or maybe a skinwalker! She was going to die! All alone, as a rock.

"Del! Del'nal!" Soaru called as he managed to stop himself just short of propelling himself into the mare in question. "Del'nal! Snap out of it! Hinote is looking for you." The hawk-falcon screeched loudly, hoping it would snap Del'nal out of her "stoned" fright. Somehow, the mare had bounded into avalanche territory--and Soaru had to wonder how they had wandered so far into mountainous terrain.

Hinote flew as quickly as he possibly could--indeed, he had never flown so fast in his life--after hearing Soaru's final screech. Just as he came into view of his familiar, Soaru was diving towards what appeared to be a rocky area... and from his height in the sky, Hinote could see an avalanche was about to happen--in fact, it already was. There were rocks tumbling and gaining speed, and Hinote found himself racing against the clock as he aimed for where his mate and familiar were. He would never forgive himself if something happened to Del'nal--and his children! What would Skylark and Hieu Fang think if their parents just up and vanished? No, he wouldn't let it happen!

The rumbling was starting to get louder and Del was getting scared. What if it was a giant?! She just couldn't get that thought out of her mind. And the seconds ticked by as she was getting more and more scared, letting her imagination run wild. Out of nowhere she heard her name being called, and she quickly scrambled to her hooves and started running.

"Don't eat me Mr. Giant! Please don't eat me!" She yelled as she tumbled over the rocks. Her imagination had gotten the best of her and when Soaru called out to Del, she thought it had been a giant calling out to her so that he could eat her for dinner. "I don't want to be dinner!"

What Del didn't realize was that she was heading even closer to the avalanche path.

The falcon cursed in his bird's tongue, not expecting to have scared the poor mare out of her wits to the point she forgot she could fly for the sky's sake. Flapping his wings a bit awkwardly, Soaru finally found some air to lift off, only to see Hinote diving after his mate at a speed the falcon was surprised at. "Wait, Hinote! Not tha--!" Soaru stopped as he realized even his partner would be unable to hear him; especially at the diving speed Hinote was going on. Feeling uncharacteristically helpless, Soaru flew higher to get a better view. He could only hope now that Hinote got to Del'nal in time, or the two would be gravely injured... and Soaru wondered how fast he himself could fly, if Hinote and Del'nal were buried in the avalanche that was coming even faster.

Seeing Soaru had gotten out of the way--and somehow managed to get Del'nal to move--Hinote let out a sigh of relief... until he saw where Del'nal was headed. Decided that just this once, he needed to shout out, Hinote did so. "Del'nal! My mate, fly!!!" Hoping he wasn't too late, Hinote had shouted as loudly as he could in order to reach out to his mate. Hopefully Del'nal wouldn't be frightened by his voice and get herself closer to the path of the rock slide. Worried, Hinote could feel his wings giving out. He was tiring! Praying silently for more strength, Hinote propelled himself with one last powerful wing stroke, hoping he could tackle Del'nal out of the way. He himself would likely get the worst of things, but he was fine with that, so long as Del'nal was safe and unhurt.

Del'nal was hearing absolutely nothing, to lost in her own mind, afraid of being stomped on or even eaten by these giants that she had created in her mind. And so she ran ever closer into the path of the rock slide, and her mind shutting down even more with how loud all the noise was.

But then, all the air was knocked out of her, as something hit her side and she went tumbling. When she finally stopped, tears were falling from her eyes and she sat there looking around, feeling very scared and very alone. She did not like this at all. Del could not see Hinote and her tears started falling even more, because she was sure the giant had eaten him. She laid her head on the ground and cried, cried for the loss of the one who was always near her. It was her fault he got eaten! And so here she would lay and never move from this spot again.

Hinote heaved and panted, having never flown so hard, so fast, or so strongly in his life. Del'nal was worth it. And for once, the ever silent stallion, kind and observant, felt a bubble of red hot anger. In his breast, he could feel it kindle. Hinote wasn't one to fall to the temptation of anger, but for this small moment, he felt it. He was angry Del'nal was so unaware and put herself constantly in danger--along with himself. He was angry tha he had to keep rescuing her and soothing her. As much as her innocence appealed to him and made him happy, at times, he admitted solely to himself, that her demeanor stressed him out.

His anger slowly seeped away as he looked around him to find that he, along with Del'nal, had safely--barely--escaped the rock slide. Too close, he thought to himself, as slowly, he moved his wearied body towards the sounds of his mate's cries. "Del'nal," he called, soothinly, gently. He approached his terrified, sweet mate. "I'm here." His emotions didn't matter as long as his mate was happy. Perhaps, he reflected, it wasn't healthy to restrain his emotions, but with Del'nal, he was glad to. It was a different challenge every day, but at least, for today, his mate was safe, albeit scared and crying herself silly. He settled for nuzzling her and making comforting, nonsense noises.
