Found this article in my news feed today:
The Tyee: Soil BiosolidsI know here that food waste here is composted and is useable soil within six months. I know nothing about what we do with sewage/sludge waste. Vancouver is just down the road from me, so it's neat to know that they reuse it.
I found it really interesting that pharmaceuticals and other personal care products don't seem to be an issue? (Granted, I haven't read through the
pdf with the nitty gritty details.) I know that water filtration plants have a hard time removing hormones and other prescription drugs, so it's interesting that it seems that composting isn't as affected. A lot of these things are really persistent and I'd be concerned growing my food in something that could have birth control and
other residues. However, it is nice to know that the bulk of it is for mine reclamation.
Also of note, mushrooms are amazing:
Ted Talk: 6 Ways Mushrooms Can Save the World.
Do you know if your city/town does this? Thoughts on the program? Did you know that mushrooms could safely break down petroleum products?
