Nuawahn looked around Emeka. Tahira lived there, and he was staying with her moms. They'd tried to tell him not to go too far away from them-having no family to take care of him and all. It had taken them a while before he finally realized that they had a good reason for him staying close, and that it would worry them, blood kin or no, if he wandered off. He didn't quite understand why, or that the jungle was a particularly dangerous place for an innocent boy and a goat with a hump. He just didn't want to make them upset. They had also tried to tell him not to go outside too much, but he didn't understand it. In fact, he had pretty much selectively forgotten it. It didn't make sense. He wouldn't go too far. There were people here who could take him back to Tahira. So what if they were all Alkidikes? They were pretty, even the ones that weren't so pretty. Pretty things were not things that he felt he needed to be afraid of, so: he was not afraid of alkidikes. In fact, it didn't register that he was different in some fundamental way. Sure, he had noticed that they were all female. Sure, he had noticed the ears, the antennae, the green skin, the markings, the lack of crystals, the amazing faceted eyes, and their hair. Sure, he knew those were not the same as what he had. It just didn't strike him that they were somehow different, certainly not different enough to be feared.
They had given him a bouncy ball- Tahira had good moms!- and Nuawahn tested it out experimentally. It wasn't the best- not much bounce. He bet it was Tahiras! But she was older... she wouldn't like bouncy balls anymore. She was off hunting, and Amma was resting, so he would play alone. That was fine! It was allright to play alone. He may have preferred a group, but fun was fun. He tossed the ball up, caught it, and looked around.
All right. He was kind of lonely. was there anybody around? Maybe everybody was busy...

Suddenly, from within the forests around him, sprang another Youngling! She was an Alkidike, no mistaking that, but something about her seemed a little bit familiar. Her big, heavy dreads were tied up in teal ribbons, her feet were nimble and quick, and her eyes were bright a wild. As she whizzed past him, she seemed to jump in surprise, and skidded to a halt. Once she gathered herself again, she made a beeline back to Nua and began to play with his hair.
"Goldie! Hey!" She exclaimed, quickly braiding the sides of his head as she had always done to her friends. "How are you? I haven't seen you in ages!"

Nuawahn brightened as the youngling appeared. Oh hey! there was someone! Maybe they would like to play. Then he recognized her distinctive markings. "Tahiiii!" he called out, delighted. It was his hair buddy! He wanted to give her a big friendly gentle hug in greeting but she was behind him, so he couldn't, and besides she was already playing with his hair and he didn't want her to accidentally pull his hair. That would be no fun! "Mmhmm! It's been a while! My hair got longer!" He tilted his head back to smile at her, "What did you do between now and then?" he asked, curiously, "I looked around for you, but I didn't find you for a while..." And he had. And he had been a bit disappointed about that. But he had just assumed she was busy or had other friends she was playing with. And he had been okay with that. Still was! But now, he was curious.

Ilyra had been searching for what had to be forever! No matter where she went she couldn't find her best friend! She had to be around somewhere, Ilyra just wasn't looking hard enough. After searching for some more time Ilyra crossed her arms and started to pout. Tahigwa had promised to meet up at their normal place! Where was she!
"Tahigwa!" she called sadly. She was already pouting and in a bad mood. Tahigwa wasn't where she said she would be, how could the two of them plan their adventures if Tahigwa wasn't there! The only reasonable explination was she was with her brother or mother, or maybe her new half sister... Or maybe she just didn't have time for Ilyra anymore.... Maybe Tahigwa didn't want to be friends with her anymore? A tear escaped one of her eyes. Why didn't Tahigwa like her anymore?

"I've been hanging out with my brother and his sister!" Tahigwa explained, examining his head for the hair growth he had mentioned. Yep, it was longer, and more blonde, too! At least to her, it was, it could have just been the difference in light from deep forest to village canopy. She smiled, proud of the soft braids she had created upon his head, and gave him a quick snuggle. "I've also been busy looking for my best friend!" She exclaimed, her eyes darting to the forest.
"IlYRAAA!" She bellowed. "OVER HERE OVER HEREEEEE! COME LOOK AT THIS KID I FOUND!"

Nuawahn giggled. He liked how the braids looked and felt, and he definitely liked the snuggling. Snuggles were pleasant, as were hugs and playing with hair. He perked up when she mentioned 'best friend'. Tahi had a friend? Of course Tahi had a friend! Tahi was great! She would have a great friend and a best friend and a bunch of friends. Of course. He turned around to try to see where she was looking, though it was an awkward angle because he didn't want to disrupt the snuggling and braiding because why would you do that. "Hiiiii" he said, though he couldn't see the albino Alkidike yet. If it was a new friend, what would they be like? Would they want to braid his hair too? He didn't think that would be bad! Or even if not! The idea of a new friend was great even if they weren't the same as friends before. "I'm Nuawahn..." he tried to get a look at whoever Tahi was looking at, but the angle was all wrong.

At hearing Tahigwa call for her Ilyra perked up right away! Tahigwa didn't sound like she was that far away! And she was calling her, that was a good sign that Tahigwa didn't want to stop being friends with her! However she said something about a kid? What did she mean she found a kid?
Curiously she made her way to where Tahigwa sounded like she was coming from. Once she got there she spotted this 'kid' that Tahigwa mentioned. It was a boy! Not only was it a boy, but Tahigwa was there braiding his hair and cuddling him like he was one of them! Sure she understood that Tahigwa was cool with other races, she was okay with them as well, however this was different. Tahigwa was her best friend, who was this kid.
When he gave her his name she huffed. "Tahigwa who is this kid?" she asked curiously.

Tahigwa's face gleamed as soon as Ilyra appeared and she practically threw herself upon her, before she dragged her over to where Nua was sitting.
"This is Goldie!" She chirped, fluffing Nua's hair as she spoke. "He has hair that's made of sunlight! Isn't that like the coolest thing EVER?!" Then she let go of Ilyra and resumed braiding his hair. This was awesome! Her best friend was meeting one of the coolest people she had ever met! They would get along and play in the trees with her forever and ever! It was a dream come true!

Wow! They were both so much older than him! "It's not really sunlight"[/b[ he said, embarrassed, "That'd burn my head." There was something really neat about this friend of Tahigwa. He'd seen alkidikes with black hair and white hair and Tahira was blonde like him, but he had never seen anything like her before! Her hair was white, but she was pink! And her eyes were red! And her markings weren't dark like other Alkidkikes, but Silver! He wanted to touch her, just to see if she was as delicate and petal-like as she looked! "Wow!" He reached out, "Tahi, tahi, she's so pretty!" he looked up at his friend, "You didnt tell me you had a friend like this!" This was better than he had thought his day could ever go! Tahi and a new, pale pretty friend! EEeeeee! This would be great!

She didn't like him. Not one bit. She was happy to be with Tahigwa, but she was not happy to share Tahigwa's attention who was not one of their family members or close friends. However for some reason Tahi seemed to really like this kid. Goldie? That was odd, and his hair was not made of sunlight. She didn't want to make Tahi mad, but she didn't want to stay here with this boy.
When the boy said his hair was not really sunlight she rolled her eyes. Of course it wasn't sunlight! How stupid did he think she was?! However she watched him closely, and when he reached out to touch her she took a step back. She did not want him to touch her. She did not want him to call her pretty. She didn't want anything to do with him really.
"Tahigwa we should go on an adventure somewhere." she suggested. She wanted to add just the two of them, but hoped her friend would hear that part even without her saying it.

Tahigwa didn't bother to listen when Nua said his hair wasn't made of sunlight. It was gold, bright, and warm! It was from the sun! How could it not be? She giggled and wrapped an arm around each of her friends shoulders. Now she had two people to run around with! This was awesome!
"Of course Ilyra is pretty!" She quipped, snuggling closer to her BFF. "She's the best Alkidike out there! Right up there with my brother, too!"
Then her eyes grew wide as Ilyra spoke and she grinned. "YES! WE SHOULD GO ON AN ADVENTURE!" She squealed, pulling both of them to their feet. "But... Where can we all go?" She paused, tapping her chin, before turning to Nua. "Do you know anywhere awesome we could go?"

Tahigwa's enthusiasm was infectious, though it helped that Nuawahn was just so excited about meeting a new friend who was tahi's best friend AND A PRETTY PINK FLOWERY ALKIDIKE TO BOOT! Nuawahn had been ready to play alone, so he was just psyched to be playing with other people! So Psyched even, that if Tahigwa had suggested they do something like dung-swimming, he would have done it, if only to try it because it would be fun with other people. But they weren't going to go dung swimming because Tahigwa wouldn't do something silly like that. That was a good thing, because Nua had a feeling that something like that would only be fun because of Tahigwa. They were going to go on an adventure. That was good.
But she was asking him? But she was so much older? And wiser? And... and... This was great! He got to lead Tahi this time! He felt so brave and powerful!
"Ummm" he said, thinking a bit. Caves were fun, but then Ilyra's pretty pale skin would get all dirty. "I know where sprites live?" Tahira had showed him! He knew how to get back and maybe if he brought the sprites something they would stay around... "... But I saw these really cool ruins. They looked like they were made of sunlight! More than my hair.' ... that was a bit riskier. He suddenly felt a little nervous. Caves, caves he had seen. Never actually explored deep into them, but he knew enough to know that they were neat. Woods, he had also explored. But ruins? Not really. Not yet. Mama hadn't let him go into any of the ruins near their path. She had gotten so upset when he even played near them, and he hadn't wanted that. She said it was dangerous and that she was 'drawing a line' which was odd because she hadn't drawn anything. But mama was mama and he loved her, but mama wasn't here. "We could find neat things, I bet!" maybe shiny things!

And of course Tahigwa would invite him. Just her luck. Not only did Tahigwa invite him, but she was also letting him pick where they go adventure! This was just all wrong and not okay in Ilyra's book. He should have no say in what they did, and he shouldn't be coming with him! His ideas were good though, but she would never admit that. She wanted to see the ruins, but she didn't want to acknowledge him.
She crossed her arms across her chest as she waited for the decision. She would go, just because she didn't want to leave Tahigwa with him. It was one thing to have to share her friends attention with the boy, it was another to let him steal it from her!
"Where ever you want Tahigwa." she said. That was what she would do, talk to Tahigwa and pretend that the boy didn't even exist. It was a good plan.

Tahigwa was practically glued to Nua as he spoke and grinned when Ilyra said that she could decide! RUINS RUINS RUINS! ALL THE WAY! There was no way she was going to pass that up!
"We're going to the ruins, then!" She exclaimed, leaping up to her feet. "Point the way, Goldie! 'Lyra and I will be right behind you!"

Despite a few reservations about ruins, Tahigwa's enthusiasm sealed the deal! "Okay!" he said, striking a leader-y pose, "Lets go to the ruins!" He dropped the ball he was holding, paused, picked it up, and put it down more gently before he ran off to show them the ruins! They weren't too far away, but they were hard to find because they were covered in jungle. He was sure he remembered where they were. He stopped at a rock overlooking a small ledge.
"They're somewhere here, Tahi! I promise!" he said, frowning at the dark rocks, "I saw them a few weeks ago an' I didn't go in, but they were right..." he caught a glimpse of something down below, "Here!" he said, clambering down the ledge face and pointing to where the overhang of the ledge obscured any view of what lay below, "They're over here!" he said, delighted.
Where the sun shone on them, the imposing stone ruins were a warm gold, but they seemed to be lit by something other than the sun. This illusion was caused by them being a brilliant white, except where Jahuar had gotten a foothold. The earth of the ledge seemed to blend almost perfectly into the stone and concrete of the ruins.
The remains of stone benches lined what appeared to be an exposed hallway, pillars and pylons and old bits of rebar stood at regular intervals between them, the dark metal burnished to the same white as the stone around it by glowing Jahuar fungus and crystals.
There was a pattern on the ledge that was exposed and slightly overhung the ruins- that of a regular weaving pattern, like wicker, fossilized in earth in the hundreds of years that this resort had been permanently closed.
The stone framed the remains of a desk and a dark tunnel leading into the underground portion of the ruins...
