Summer had arrived and the days were sunny and bright. Billy had a day off and after letting him sleep in, Ladon wanted to treat him out to dinner after they walked about the maul. With both of them patrolling, Billy working, and Ladon now graduated online and looking for work, it felt as if they didn't get to get away sometimes. With the sun now out, Ladon wanted to get back to being a couple and not to fall back on his old ways of just patrolling. Well, not patrolling as much.

Arm around Billy and feeling a bit more affectionate in public than his usually reserve self kept him from doing, he moved past people and summer sale signs. "I paid the rent yesterday and still have a bit left over. We should find someplace nice to eat." He told him, not telling Billy how he got the money. Between the both of them, he knew Billy probably knew he pinched it from someone while on patrol.

The reinstating of energy draining, along with the monetary perks that came with it, allowed Billy some breathing room as far as the bills went. It still didn't alow for anything too indulgent, but it was something.

Billy had an arm around Ladon, thumb hooked through Ladon's belt-loop, and taking advantage of the openness, placed a kiss to Ladon's temple. The mall was really busy for it not being the holiday season, that could easily be the but summer tourists. Tourists were good targets, but now wasn't work-time.

"Alright, what do you feel like?"

At least the food court restaurants weren't that expensive. And it was kind of reminiscent of their first real encounter with one another...as ill-intentioned as it had been at the time.

"Hmm....Want to share some pizza?" He asked, usually not a pizza person but feeling like sharing a slice. It was also something he'd seen couple their age do, sharing pizza, and it was too nice outside to eat anything too super hot like Mexican food and they did sandwiches more than enough times at home. "We can order something nice at home tonight." Since he doubted pizza would diminish his extra cash.

Looking around, he checked to see where a pizza place was and then froze, squeezing Billy's arm and turning him just so in order to use him as a wall to hide behind. Panic raced over his features as he hunched a little, trying to look small.

"Sounds fine to me." Mall pizza - cheap, greasy, more cheese than anything. It worked. For someone who ate most his lunches out of cheap vending machines, he didn't complain. He looked to see where the pizza vendor was, when a random thought came to mind.

"Before we leave we should stop by the pet store and grab something for Sammy, sh-"

Billy stopped when he noticed Ladon acting weird.

"What's the matter?"

Cue the possessive, protective, guard-dog mode. Billy turned and started looking to see if there was anything, or anyone, around that he could discern as any sort of threat. Effectively killing whatever wall he'd been serving as. After all, it wasn't like either of them was exactly wall stature. More like a fence....

But Billy didn't see anything immediately alarming, and he looked back at Ladon, waiting for an answer.

He wanted to escape. He wanted to have the ability to teleport in the open. Invisibility. Emergency shoot. Anything. Panic was flooding his system as he clung to Billy's arm. "No. Don't!" He hissed, but Billy was already turning and not helping to become a bigger, taller shield.

He tugged on his arm. "We need to go. We have -" But he froze as he glanced over to see his mother and saw their eyes meet.

His voice caught in his throat at he froze, staring at the woman who was staring at him. His mother was dressed in a floral skirt, dress sandals, and a blouse with a shopping bag under one arm. Her complexion was pale in shock as he locked eyes with him, and very slowly, she started to move to them.

Ladon's hands squeezed his arm tightly, feeling like he'd faint or just die right there. Everything in him wanted to escape what was happening, but as his mother stood before him, he knew he couldn't escape this.

Her rich black hair, straight and long but matching in colors like his looked at him. Her rich green eyes watched him, wide in shock, and she moved to get closer as if she couldn't believe what she saw. "Ladon?" He gasped, her eyes flickering from her son to the boy in front of him, and back to her son.

Uh....well, now wasn't that something? Not exactly the way Billy had expected things to go but... Perhaps it was best if Billy kept his mouth shut for a while.

There was no denying the resemblance between the two, although there might have been some mental comparisons to Loki flash through his mind as well, but that was neither here nor there. He might have vaguely recalled a customer fitting her image come in to his place of work a few times....

Billy let his circulation-deprived arm slip around Ladon, which now put the couple side-by-side, and showing the subtlest bit of comfort. There was no hiding for Ladon, and this had to happen sooner or later. For as big a city as DC was, Billy was still a little surprised such a run-in hadn't happened sooner.

Ladon really didn't have anywhere to go, and while Billy's hold usually was comforting, he felt more imprisoned in it and self-aware what contact would say. His mother wasn't that dumb after all, and when he saw her see Billy stand beside him, she already started to rationalize things in her mind.

Her eyes settled back on her son. "I've been looking everywhere for you. I thought you were dead or ...god knows, in some backwoods in another state doing who-knows-what. You just left without talking to me."

Ladon: "We did talk. Then I left a note." He said, not wanting to argue, but not wanting to fall back to not being heard.

"Oh yes. I read that. You left me so little to go on. You just ran off. How was I supposed to know you were okay? You left school. You left everyone you knew. You stopped talking to your sister and father. They all thought you joined some gang or might have gotten hurt again."

Ladon held tightly to Billy, and he shook his head. "I said I wasn't going to live with dad. You didn't give me any chance to change your mind. I wasn't leaving."

"Is it because of him?" Ladon looked at his mother who was now looking at Billy. "Did you want to stay because you wanted to be with him? Is that why you left? You didn't think I'd understand?"

"No! Billy and -"

"Billy." His mother repeated the name as a sort of informal introduction.

"Yeah. I didn't even know him much when I left."

"And where did you go?" She asked, concern etched in her features in a way that made Ladon see how much she aged. How tired she was. Had he done that to her? Drained her this way?

"I got my own place......I graduated."

"From where?" She asked. Seeing as she checked Meadow-view and worked at Crystal, she had to wonder where he'd go.

"Online."

Well, there was at least one thing Billy wasn't guilty of. It certainly would have been points against him if Ladon had left home because of him.

Finally finding an opening, "Hey, how about y'all find a table and I'll get that pizza while you two catch up? M'kay?" he asked, looking to Ladon for a yay or nay.

At least in a public setting things couldn't get too out of hand, right? After all, he was sure neither Ladon nor Ladon's mother would want to cause a scene, and if they did here, in the food court, then there would most surely be eyes all on them. Of course, he didn't want Ladon to think he was just up and abandoning him to deal with his mum alone, either.

He stood, stiff, as Billy decided that they should sit, talk, while he got pizza. It was probably best for Billy, who might be blamed for a lot of things or asked too many questions he didn't want his boyfriend to answer, but at the same time he didn't want to be left alone. He wanted to just take Billy's hand and leave. He knew the conversation wasn't going to be pleasant, and he already felt torn up and miserable at the moment just looking at the unreadable emotions on his mother's face, but he also was glad she was alive.

Ladon didn't say anything, letting Billy go, and head bowed in surrender to what was going to happen, he walked with his mother to a nearby table farther off from the other occupied tables to allow them some illusion of privacy.

Sitting, he looked over to his mother, who tucked in her skirt and sat down. She looked at him, her brows creased as she just tried to grasp that she was here with her son. "I missed you so much. I thought something had happened to you. I know we had are arguement, but running away? How could you have done that to me?"

"You were treating me like a kid and giving me no say in anything that was happening." He said, feeling the old anger rise back. In feeling weak. In feeling unable to control his life's direction.

"You know how bad the city is getting. I did what was best, and your sister misses you."

"I haven't seen my sister in years. It wouldn't kill her to not see me or to visit. You wanted to send me over there because you were afraid I'd die, but you never understood that I took care of myself when everyone was in a coma."

"And you got hurt. I wanted to do what was best for you."

"And I wanted you to listen to me. It didn't happen, so I left." He said, feeling defiant to an old argument.

"Yes, you did. You ran away from your problems and family. An adult would not have done that."

He felt the lecture settle on him, and he looked over to her. He knew she cared, but he didn't like her delivery of her side of the story. "And adult wouldn't make demands on other people without asking them what they would want to do." He said back, and wished he hadn't bumped into her this way. The conversation was getting sour fast.

Billy returned with one of those plastic numbers in hand, which would be called when their food was ready. Aaaaaand it looked like thing shad dissolved in to an argument.

"The past is done, the guilt lingers, forgive what can't be changed, and rebuild," he said casually, with a bit of a sigh as he sat down. He then looked to Momma Shepard;

"Trust me, I know the desire to protect him and just...lock him away somewhere safe. I can sympathize there." Billy could be an annoying little guard dog at times.

"But at that age, it wouldn't of done a lot of good anyway - mere months from graduating and being able to strike out on his own... He'd have just come back anyway. Trust me - he's a bit hard-headed like that," Billy looked at Ladon with a teasing grin as he worked to diffuse the situation. Back to das madre;

"And he didn't do what he did without feelings of guilt. Which is why I'd hoped the two of you could reunite and make up and all that jazz. Because I've never had parents that gave a s**t - pardon my language, ma'am - about me, and he has that, and I dun wanna see that thrown away."

Billy's return and words were not welcomed new. Mrs. Shepard looked at a boy much younger than her preaching on how she should behave and had admitted that he wasn't involved with his own parents.

"I'm sorry, but I've lived with my son much longer than you have, and while you are together and believe you know him far better than I do because you are together, that doesn't not make you an expert. I raised him. You just date him."

"Mom. No one knows me. Okay. Can everyone stop pretending to be the expert of me like I'm some subject to discuss." He hated that, and didn't like the fact his mother was talking to Billy in this way.

"I'm sorry, Billyyy....what is your last name? It's endearing that you are protecting my son in whatever way you feel you are, but don't pretend you can compare that to what a mother does. Don't ever compare or state that you know anything about the matter."

"Stop fighting. I don't need this. Mom. Billy. Just....stop." He took a breath and looked over at his mother.

"I'm really sorry about what happened, but I did what I thought was best for me because you thought you knew better. I'm an adult now, even if you don't think so, and I'm making my own decisions even if no one likes them. I'm sorry I ran off, and I hated that I left you - when we were the only ones in the house. I wasn't trying to be ungrateful, but I couldn't just go. I have to stay here. I just couldn't face you after after leaving. I don't hate you, but I can understand if you hate me for what I did."

Mrs. Shepard looked at her son and took a breathe. "I think we'll have to talk more about this, but I don't hate you. Whatever happens in life and whatever you do, I'll still your mother. That means I love you no matter what. As for everything else, well, it's going to need us to talk more. Can I at least have your number? Your address? Do you trust me enough with that?"

Ladon was hesitant. He didn't live in a great part of town, so instead he took out his phone and just offered his phone number. He didn't want his mother invading his life too much just yet. Things had to go slow, and even then, he knew he had to keep a distance else his other life might harm her.

Billy had tried his best to be casual about his words, light-hearted, even. So the verbal lashing confused him. There was a million and one things he could have said to counter Mrs.Shepard - He'd never said nor did he mean to allude that he thought he knew Ladon better than she, for example - but he held his tongue and sighed.

Billy had reasons for why he wasn't involved with is parents. Mostly due to neglect, stress - silver wasn't his natural hair color after all - and borderline abuse. Going to Hillworth has been his own decision, as it has been a paradise after having to endure years at 'home.' Billy hadn't ever told anyone about any of this though. He didn't want the sympathy that would come with it. All he had wanted was for Ladon to have a good relationship with his own family, and then maybe he could finally, maybe, be treated like a son too. Of course it didn't look like that would happen entirely like he'd wanted.

And it hurt a bit.

"I'm sorry," He said, mostly to Ladon, then he got up as their number was called.
