I know I may mention westboro a ton, but this hit me. What about a rival group? That goes to where the church protests and the protests involve peaceful loving messages about God. Maybe even some live music going on depending on the place. And also if somebody is brave and patient, they can go over to the westboro members and preach where it proves their hatred is wrong. Something like how the few counter protestors do, but with a true gospel message of God.

It won't work. As far as their rhetoric is concerned, you're spreading lies about the gospel in service to Satan.

People counter-protest them everywhere they go. Honestly, all that's probably effective in doing is getting them more press. Everybody with half a mind disagrees with what they're doing. I think ignoring them is the only real way for the average person to take the wind out of their sails.
No matter how hard they're countered, they still get all the press. Wherever they are, news vans are going to follow THEM to make them famous and to make people think that they're a threat- and that the god they represent is a threat. Which of course makes it seem like they're everywhere, and not just a handful of whackjobs from Kansas with loud opinions and too much money to spend. rolleyes
EVERY church should be spreading the love of Christ with the same intensity that WBC spreads their hate. Wouldn't that be wonderful? After all, WBC is only a church. Collectively, we could potentially smother them.

To share the love of God and then my other plan is protest at their church.

You don't need to go around forcing love in everyone's faces, just go through your lives being good people, make your churches welcoming environments, and speak out against hatred when you see it.

Well, first of all, there already are counter-protestors. Many times I think they actually outnumber the Westboro Baptists.
Secondly, part of the problem with the WBC isn't just that they protest or what they protest, but the fact that where they often protest is wildly inappropriate. Adding to that mayhem would do more harm than good.
As heinous as the WBC is, all they are at the end of the day is a fringe extremist group that have unfortunately garnered a great deal of media attention. And as awful as the message they're spreading is, they are within their rights to believe what they believe, and to be public about what they believe. They've already been given far more attention than they deserve. Stalking them and showing up wherever they're protesting to protest their protest....now my brain hurts.

I suppose I could have worded that better, because yes relentless love in anyone's face would probably get annoying pretty fast for just about everyone. I meant intense love by demonstration. Caring for the marginalized and the poor and the addicted the way we're supposed to rather than caring only for our neighbors that look like us. If Christians followed the commands of Jesus a little more passionately, maybe WBC wouldn't be the first image of Christianity that comes to mind for a lot of folks. Is more along the lines of what I meant to say.
