Still dragging Sherry along, he arrived at deck 9, and before the life trainee could say or do anything, he took the card key from her, took a quick glance around, and marched to the corresponding door, sliding the card into the key slot. When the door opened, he pulled her in, and then shut the door behind him.

"Listen to me carefully, Sherry, and I SWEAR I mean every word of it. Don't you DARE go anywhere near the commotion downstairs. Just stay here and rest. And don't follow me." He wasn't sure if she would listen to his last request, but... even with more space, it still felt too awkward to be sharing a room with her, even if only temporarily and probably not much more than however long for it to take for s**t to break loose, which... really wasn't long. But to have her here rather than running about with a potential murderer on the loose and... probably something more complicated than that really didn't bode well with him. As he was now, if she got into trouble, there was no way he could help her, and he knew she wouldn't hesitate to try and take the bullet for him should something happen to him. He couldn't go through that again. He wouldn't.

"I'm going back to my room. I'll come find you when all this gets sorted out." Maybe he'd have to do some snooping of his own.

It actually took her a moment to figure out why they were going to deck 9. She was still a little dumbfounded when he took the card key form her. Why were they going into Ofelia's room? It wasn't either one of theirs, it was hers and therefore her space, and on top of that- There had been an incident of some kind. To be fair, there were enough hunters running around they would be of little use, but... Sherry might have looked a little bit stunned as Jake shoved her into the room.

The look of astonishment faded and turned into something more of a deadpan, 'you are kidding me' look as Jake told her to stay in the room and wait for him. ... Jake running off alone had the best track record, he had no weapon, and was still healing. Sherry almost laughed. Ahh, no. She shook her head.

Reaching out, she grabbed his sleeve and grasped it tight. "You're joking. I'm not injured, recovering, or weaponless, and you are putting me in some room to rest?" She was almost insulted, she realized. "You're the one that should be resting and out away from the commotion." She shook her head again. "I'm not letting you run off alone." Again.

He should have know she wouldn't listen.
"Sherry. Please." He took hold of her wrist, staring at her. "I already screwed up the last mission. If I sit around doing nothing... who knows what will happen?" He slowly pried her fingers off his sleeve while he placed his hands on her shoulders. "Like you said, I'm weaponless, I'm not going to do anything reckless. Heck, I can't even fight, but I can at least try to uncover some intel. I'm supposed to anyways, considering I'm in the Death division." He let go then, turning around to open the door. "Besides, I alone am responsible for my own actions. I'm not a kid, Sherry, so please stop treating me like one."

Stubborn, stubborn Jake. He was even saying he wouldn't be reckless. Ha.

"Do you remember how you screwed up the last mission? Something about running off alone?" Staying on his heels, she reached out with her right and grabbed his shoulder, making sure it was the bad one.

She didn't have time for this. He was a stubborn jerk, and he was not going to go gallivanting around a ship with problems gimpy and alone. Pressing her fingers into his shoulder, Sherry took hold of Jake and put everything she had into spinning him half way around and sending his back against the wall. Her palm pressed into the front of his shoulder to keep him there.

"You're right. I can't stop you, anymore than you can stop me. Hunters are magnets for trouble, and you're still healing," her hand pressed against his shoulder more, and Sherry made it a point to get quite close to Jake, keeping eye contact. "I'm not trying to treat you like a child. But sending you out wounded and near defenseless is just asking for something to finish tearing you to pieces."

The pain was unbearable, and Jake let out a cry as she continued applying pressure to his shoulder. He shoved her away with his other hand, crumpling to the floor as he held his hands over his head, trembling.

Sherry, why? Why were you doing this to him?
"If only I had just died during that mission, none of this would be happening." he muttered, afraid she might strike him for that comment.

He had told her not to treat him like a kid, but here he was cowering from her, as if he were a child awaiting punishment from his mother.

She was angry. Angry at him, and at her and at...at.... She'd hurt him. She'd done it and she'd meant to do it. Not that bad, just a little, to get his attention. But she'd...

Armagnac chuckled, and Sherry felt the weapon's pleasure at her actions.

Nausea washed over Sherry.

"No." Regret tainted her voice. Regret, shame, sorrow, and tears. "Please don't say that." Trying not to let herself be sick, she swallowed and swayed, back hitting the wall. She slid down it until she was sitting on the floor. "Please. You're worth so much more than that."

Pressing her hands into her lap, Sherry let her nails dig into her palms. "This is my fault. I...I... Oh, god. I'm sorry, Jake." She wanted to reach a hand out to comfort him... but she couldn't. She didn't deserve that. And he deserved better.

Her words felt hollow to him. Please, don't try to flatter him. He alone could judge his own worth.

"...Sorry." He managed to say after what seemed like forever. He let out a bitter chuckle, palm covering his face. "Some useless hunter I am, ruining your little cruise date." He struggled to get up, a hand pressed against his shoulder as he turned to look at Sherry. "Isn't it supposed to be the guy who protects the girl? And yet something like this is able to render me immobile. Let's face it. Whether you like it or not, my chances of survival should we get attacked are slim to none. You still have a fighting chance. All I can do right now is try and collect intel. I can't even fight, let alone defend myself, but I'm not going to run and hide. And I won't let you fight on my behalf."

"Don't apologize. Not to me." She still felt sick. Armagnac was still chuckling, a low, constant rumble in her mind. "I shouldn't have... What I did was uncalled for. I should not have hurt you like that."

One hand reached up to wipe at the tears on her face. "It's not...I'm not.... Ha. We don't even know if things are going all to hell, Jake. We don't..."

What was this all about? Was it really about what was out there? Maybe it was, for him. For her...

"What if it were the other way around? What if Armagnac was broken? What if I was the one who should be wandering around crutches? Would you let me go out there?"

A bitter smile curled up on his face.
"No, I deserve it. Honestly, seeing you angry is the only thing that reminds me that you're still human." It wasn't... exactly meant to be an insult, but really, he had a really hard time seeing how she could be happy with someone like him. It just didn't make sense.

When she reversed the situation, he paused, and let out a sigh.
"... No. I would have made sure you didn't even come in the first place."

"You deserve to be smacked, but you didn't deserve that." She looked him in the eye. Wounded and unarmed, and she'd used it against him. "You really didn't." She sighed. She...didn't quite know how to take the angry comment. "Are you saying I'm too nice?"

It was about then she realized she was sitting on the floor in a dress...that was not made for floor sitting. At least she hadn't been sitting cross legged or anything. "And why not?" she began while rose to her feet, "Why wouldn't I have been allowed to come. Should I have made sure you couldn't come on this little 'cruise date'?" His words.

Her hands were absentmindedly straightening her skirt while she waited for an answer.

"That is exactly what I'm saying."
Seriously, he rarely saw her mad. Mostly... sad. Though he suppose the occasions where she did get mad had been because of him. Hmm...

And then he gave Sherry the most deadpan stare at her question.
"Need I remind you that this is a mission and not a vacation? For all I know, there are probably shadowlings lurking in the ship waiting to sink us at any moment." And then he sighed, because really, he actually REALLY did not want to come. "Perhaps if you impaled my other foot. I have a feeling I'd still be forced to come in a wheelchair though."

She quirked her eyebrow at him. He and Armagnac agreed far too often.

"True. Which makes your point about me staying behind invalid. I'd be here, too. And you would be trying to convince me to stay safe somewhere. It's a horrible double standard, Jake." She bit her lip. "I do thank you for your concern, though." She still felt bad about the shoulder.

"You know, if you'd gone to the meeting on crutches they might have let you stay behind."

A heavy sigh.
"I'm not looking for pity. And besides, you know who the death division leader is. I'm pretty sure he'd still make you go if you were still breathing. Maybe even if you weren't."
PostPosted: Sun Jun 16, 2013 11:00 pm

"Most likely." She almost laughed at that.

It was Sherry's turn to sigh. On reflex, her hand went to her eye to brush away the remnant of a tear. Dammit. She'd not wanted things to go like this. Not at all. "Forgive me. For earlier." Not that she deserved it, but... She took half a step towards him, arm reaching out, but she stopped. No, no. She couldn't bear to make him flinch again.

She decided to change the subject. "How long do you think this mission is going to last?" Her eyes glanced around the room. It was rather nice but... "They only told us to bring the one outfit." No sleeping over, right?

He watched as her hand reached out to him, making no move to step forward and back, and only stared as she stopped.
"No... I should... stop treating you like a kid, I mean with you being older and all..."
Yes Jake, because a lady really liked being reminded of her age. Go you.
"I guess this whole cruise mission thing has me on edge. I'm not a huge fan of these fancy things..." he muttered, shoving his hands into his pockets.

"... Heck if I know. I highly doubt we're staying overnight." The fact that... they were now in a room alone... made him somewhat nervous, and when his phone buzzed, he was more than happy for the distraction.... which turned to a slight frown when he skimmed over the text.
"Well, it seems we're needed for something..." He pocketed his phone, arching his eyebrow at her. Did this mean that whole case with the body was wrapped up? Maybe he should ask someone about it later...

It was then he seemed to remember something and paused, still watching Sherry to see what her reaction was.
"I think we should go, but-"
He reached into his hoodie pocket, pulling out a small black box tied with a ribbon and handed it to her, and if she inspected the box, she would see the distinct words "Tiffany and Co." imprinted in dainty silver font on the lid.

"Don't... look into this too much. I just didn't want you complaining about not being to get a souvenir or something from this mission."

If she looked inside, she would find this.
