      WHO: Revontulet, Doucette, Namini, Prajna
WHEN: Early afternoon, some people have just eaten, others are probably eating soon
WHERE: A mid-range salon - we aren't all made of money here, ok?
WEATHER: A little bit windy but otherwise a pretty nice day, not too many clouds in the sky

It wasn’t that Revontulet needed a haircut, just that Doucette was simply not sure what kind of maintenance would be required on those special locks of her charge. As of yet they had done nothing out of the ordinary and they looked as lovely as the day the frei had been born, but would the ombre fade as it did in human hair? Certainly human hair didn’t have a tendency to light up in quite the manner Ren’s did, or appear to shift in different ways when the light hit it, but that didn’t really mean it was out of the question, did it?

Or perhaps Doucette was just a worry wart, fretting over things that didn’t require fretting over.

Either way she’d decided that the two of them were going to have a mini spa day, relaxing and getting their hair washed and styled. It was one of the redhead’s favourite past times (as can be imagined if you had to tame those wild kinks every morning!) and she hoped her proverbial daughter would appreciate the experience just as much.

The frei drifted quietly behind, unable to grasp the concept of the establishment they were currently en route towards. Curiosity overrode her other instincts however and so she found herself in close proximity to her guardian while her gaze wandered to watch the people as they moved.

Few people seemed to take interest in her unless they looked hard enough. It wasn’t until they did the double-take to her wings or her ribbon that they realized there was something different about her, but in a crowd or drifting behind Doucette it was easy to see a human with some uniquely styled hair.

Upon entering the shop Ren’s nose wrinkled. It was not an overly offensive smell, for there were hints of perfume in the scents being used, however the majority of the room had an air of chemical about it that made her disinterested in continuing the project. Doucette’s enthusiasm registered as a small internal blip on the aurora’s radar and for a long moment she struggled between her desire to leave and her desire to appease Doe.

Finally the Irish woman’s smile won the war and the aurora floated further into the shop. This time she was brought up short when she saw someone take a rather large pair of scissors to a girl’s ponytail and hack away at it until her head was much relieved of a good 6 inches of hair.

No.

There would be no cutting of her hair today (or really any day), thank you very much.

It had taken Namini a few days of "You'd feel really refreshed!" and "Don't you want to look a bit more put together?" but finally her stubborn redhead agreed. Initially Prajna saw absolutely no point in losing even half an inch of hair. The hair was simply going to keep growing; cutting it did little except delay that inevitable process. Yet Namini would not shut up about this "salon" and how it could work wonders on one's locks. The final push was when Namini was running her fingers through Prajna's unruly hair one day and stopped at the tips.

"Wut?" Prajna hissed.
"Oh. Nothing. Just split ends."
"....What?" came the more timid response.
"It's just a sign that your hair is poorly taken care of. Some might say ... it's a sign of weakness?"

There was a sinister giggle and Prajna tore itself from Namini's tender fingers. For the next hour and a half, it locked itself in the bathroom and, after confirming that it did indeed have hairs that seemed to split or crinkle in a disgusting manner, it agreed to go in for a trim.

However, when they arrived at the business, Prajna was having second thoughts. Running its fingers through its jagged tendrils, it began to wonder if this was really going to be okay. Namini had said it was a painless process but something felt trapped, fluttering wildly inside Prajna's chest. Was it excited? Anxious? Whatever the feeling was, it was immediately replaced with repulsion as they entered the establishment.

"What is that disgusting smell?" Prajna growled, pulling a crimson sleeve up to its sensitive nose. Namini made an apologetic face, explaining, "It's the chemicals. Some people come here to change their hair color or--"

"Chemicals?!" Prajna was put on the defensive. It glanced around suspiciously, as if the shampoo bottles and brushes were prepared to eat the Frei alive. That's when it saw her. Remaining just as tense, Prajna's frosty gaze caught sight of an ombre Frei, a female it had never seen before, not even in passing. Prajna put a hand on Namini's shoulder and pushed her forward, towards the receptionist's desk, creating a small barrier between the foreign Frei and itself. Namini, oblivious to her Star's locked gaze and simply taking its odd mannerisms as first haircut jitters, turned to the receptionist, smiled and then proceeded to schedule their dual trims.

Although the aurora did not have a sharp part to her lithe form, when Doucette turned to look at her charge she could tell that the newborn was bristling. Confusion settled like a heavy blanket over the pale woman’s features and she tilted her head to the side with a little bounce to her curls and a furrow of her brows. It was hard for the redhead to remember that Ren was a newborn. So often was the girl ahead of the game in terms of speech and thought that Doe often treated her like she would any other adult friend. Thus the other’s instant aversion to the salon was less than comprehensible.

Revontulet, for her part, had tucked her wings like paper folding over itself against her back, sleek and defensive, ready to dodge any oncoming attacks she might perceive. If they were taking that much hair from the one girl, how much would they take from her?! All of it? Would they shave her so they might have every last strand from her scalp?

“Hi, how can I help you?”

The cheerful voice startled Ren and she darted backwards, hands flying to her hair where she covered as much as she could with long fingers twisting into the locks. Surely it would be harder to take if it was inseparable from her appendages? “No” was the aurora’s only reply, eyes narrowing dangerously at the smiling woman. There were scissors in a little pouch on her belt, the fiend! Revon was ready for any attack, mobile or otherwise.

Revontulet!” Doucette reprimanded, her voice firm yet still holding onto the surprise. “What is the matter with you? You have to be nice.

A headshake showed that this was not going to happen in the near future. Turning, the aurora made to leave, eyes searching for the door but landing instead upon another frei. Surely they must be warned about the atrocities taking place in this establishment! “They are taking it all,” she said to the red-coloured one, eyes narrowing as if she were sharing a secret with the other frei. Daring to remove one hand from her head, Ren pointed towards the girl who was tearing up at the sight of the 6inches of hair the hairdresser had removed. They made a customer cry! And yet more people were entering even as they spoke!

Startled, the receptionist looked between conspirator Ren and Doucette, who stood slightly behind with her mouth hanging open. “Ren...that’s not...you misunderstand” the redhead started feebly, unsure how exactly to explain what was happening. “They wont cut your hair, I promise. I wont let anyone hurt your hair.” Doucette’s soothing voice was matched by a hand on Revon’s arm and a rather pleading expression.

Distrustful, the aurora left her hands on her head, tangled in the ombre of her hair. Her wings, however, did loft slowly, one section at a time. She was willing to listen at the very least.

"Hi, yes. I called earlier and made an appointment. Names: Namini Nao and Prajna Nao," Namini explained to the receptionist, ignoring Prajna's tightening grip on her shoulder. At one point, the brunette even took to tapping Prajna's fingers, annoyed. But when someone nearby called out in their direction and motioned suddenly to a tearful girl in one of the salon chairs, Namini's attention was redirected. Raising her eyes, Namini's cerulean gaze fell upon an interesting Frei, a female. She had what looked like dip dyed hair, with her roots a rare blend of blueberry purple and sapphire blue, fading to tips of turquoise. She looked so regal yet obviously panicked. Namini turned to look at her own charge, taking the stranger as the reason why the Star had been clinging so fiercely.

Prajna's face however held no sign of hostility or fear as the young girl's did. It actually looked a bit confused, almost indifferent, though the hand on Namini's shoulder indicated its distrust. Namini was about to say something to the Frei but suddenly had an idea. She turned her back to Prajna and quickly said to the receptionist, "I know we came for trims but is there enough time to get two scalp massages, please? For Prajna here and for that young lady over there."

Namini tilted her head in Revontulet's direction, smiling brightly. Behind the elegant Frei stood a worried looking woman, a woman with a maternal knit in her brow that indicated to Namini that she had to be the foreign Frei's guardian. The young girl waved, hoping the duo would approach but Prajna made the first approach, disinterested in Namini now, even going so far as to remove its hand from her shoulder. It floated a bit closer to the panicked Revontulet, growing ever more nauseous by the pungent smell of hair dye and shampoos. It stopped within a yard of the Raevan and took her in.

She looked so mature and Prajna had to be honest, it found her hair to truly be one worth concerning over. If the Star had her hair, perhaps it would have continued to be reluctant about coming for a trim but Prajna was Prajna.

"You do know that's what this place is for, yes? To cut hair, to remove splitted ends and signs of weakness, as Namini says, yes?" Prajna asked, its voice flat. She had to be young and yet something was interesting about her. She didn't seem to trust the humans yet she tried to warn and protect Prajna. She had to be either remarkably stupid yet kind like Namini... or tricking Prajna. For now, however, Prajna went with the first assumption.

I won’t cut it,” Revontulet returned, wings pressing to her back once more like a cat folding its ears back against its head. The newborn had not been informed of why she was coming to this establishment, but there was no amount of threats or cajoling that would convince her that cutting her hair was acceptable. This red-haired...boy? could be concerned about the removal of ‘weakness’ if that was his wish, but she harboured no such desire to ‘remove’ weakness from herself, especially if it came off in the form of her beloved hair.

After watching a girl brush her hair 50 times every night before bed in a movie, Ren had begun copying the gesture, tending to her own locks diligently before bed and ensuring every strand received the utmost attention. It toed a fine line between soft and silky, easily caught in the breeze and a delight to run one’s fingers through. Besides the fact that she had only been alive for a few weeks, hardly months, the frei considered it her prized possession. Even the lava lamp she’d stolen (well, Lulu had stolen for her) took second rank to the aurora’s shifting locks.

Doucette continued to pet at Ren’s arm until the girl finally let go of her hair, looking at her curly haired guardian in a way which suggested that if someone came at her with scissors at least she was close enough to be knocked into their path. It was not a murderous look, but it was not one of daughterly affection either. The guardian managed a grimace of a smile, “I only brought you here to have your hair washed. I promse, not cutting. They will shampoo it and get it to sparkle; it will be so pretty. And they will give you a massage. You like massages, right?

Pale wings lofted once more at the mention of a massage. Touch, she did like touch.

Revon’s lips turned down slightly, “Touching is ok. Cutting is not ok.” Calmed by Doucette’s promise, and her own mental one that would have read along the lines of ‘over my dead body’ had the girl known the phrase, she drifted closer to Prajna with the intent to inspect him. The term nagged at her, somewhere in the back of her mind. ‘Him’ had been a snap judgement, seen from a distance and labelled immediately, but the features were pretty and different. Unaware that there were other options, the girl mentally shrugged, sticking with the masculine pronoun. “You do not mind, then? Having it removed?” Ren pointed once again at the girl whose hair reached barely to her jaw now, though at least she had stopped crying. “How does hair contain weakness?" The concept baffled the newborn. Surely her hair was not one of her weaknesses.

Doucette took a little side-step towards Namini, hoping to go unnoticed. “I am so sorry," she breathed.

Immediately, the moonlit Frei refused Prajna's attempt at comfort and the Star, surprisingly, did not take offense. The androgynous soul merely watched the newborn and her guardian interact, carefully taking in their relationship. As Prajna witnessed Doucette reach out and tenderly caress Revontulet into submission and calm, Prajna firmly concluded that Revontulet was a new Frei, still distrusting and suspicious of this new human world. Prajna remembered its first few days. Perhaps the female was weeks, maybe even months old now, and somewhat accustomed to Gaia but Prajna knew it was still hard to adjust. It glanced downwards. Yes, it was still hard to feel part of this place without legs...

As Doucette continued to reassure her charge that no harm was to be done, Prajna turned, a bit disinterested now by the young Frei's panic. There really wasn't anything Prajna could or would do to calm her itself so it thought best to leave the duo...but just as it turned, the regal female called after the Star, "You do not mind then? Having it removed? How does hair contain weakness?"

Instinctively, Prajna whipped back around. She had said the magic words, erm, or at least asked Prajna the right thing. Revontulet had asked the genderless redhead a question, a question indicating its superior knowledge and maturity. Smirking, Prajna nudged its head towards the woman in the chair with the new bob and explained, "Namini tells Prajna that hair has weakness in its ends. That lady? The miss over there? She probably cries because she feels better, more relieved. Probably realizes how far she has come and how strong she is now, yes. Yes."

Prajna floated closer and, without asking, flipped Revontulet's tips over to examine them. Then it released its own ponytai and revealed its jagged and split ends, comparatively. "Namini explains that hair can show weakness. See? Edges, tips of hair can seem splitted and fragile. No good looking weak, either, new girl. If weak, anyone can take advantage of you" Prajna stated proudly. "Prajna is here today to remove split ends. Be strong. Like Prajna!"

It smirked and nearby, Namini couldn't help but smile too, relieved. At least the Star wasn't misbehaving. That's when she spotted the other guardian sliding up to her. Her smile widened and gestured to the woman that they take seats nearby. The receptionist had silently gave her an "OK!" sign, regarding the massages, now all they had to do was wait.

"Don't worry about it. I'm Namini, Namini Nao by the way. The redhead you see over there is Prajna. It's been a while since I first got Prajna but, I remember how edgy it was when I first got it so it's alllll good," the brunette stated as she slid into a cushioned seat nearby. "You are?"

As Doucette slid away towards Namini, Revontulet’s attention was drawn into Prajna’s explanation. Shocking blues widened with interest as she turned her gaze back towards the woman with short hair. Indeed, she looked considerably happier now that her long locks were not being paraded in front of her like a trophy. This did not convince Revon that cutting her hair was an acceptable option, but it further calmed the young frei one step closer to a state of normalcy.

Straightening, she too inspected the tips of her hair as the redhead did, curious to find these signs of weakness and inwardly proud when there were none to be found that matched his when he displayed what was to be removed. “I am not weak?” she inquired, gesturing to the lack of split ends on her well-brushed hair and thinking to the many times she had difficulty lifting things or opening items. By all accounts, Ren was exceptionally weak. The formula between hair and strength didn’t seem to find equal ground with her. “You are Prajna, then?” His strange way of speaking was difficult to her. Already the aurora was speaking in fluent sentences, avoiding words and phrases she wasn’t comfortable with to ensure perfection where possible, but she had never come upon such a unique way of phrasing words.

I am Revontulet.” Turning her head slightly, Ren watched Doucette for a moment, unhappy with her relocation. Now, should one of the women with the portable scissors attempt to approach her she had no one to block their path except Prajna. Perhaps this was not a bad thing, however, as Prajna clearly didn’t mind the people with scissors. He could get his hair cut and she could remain safe.

Doucette looked visibly relieved when the other guardian brushed Revon’s irrationality aside. Usually her newborn was so well behaved...but every now and then she did the strangest things and the Irish woman simply didn’t know how to cope! “I’m Doucette, though everyone calls me Doe,” she replied, her hands giving a little flutter as she talked, an animated speaker if there ever was one, “Prajna is lovely...er...handsome.

A blush covered Doe’s pale cheeks as she sat next to Namini, keeping close to the edge of the seat should she need to jump up at any moment. “That’s Revontulet. I only just got her three months ago. It’s been...an adjustment...
PostPosted: Thu Jun 27, 2013 9:58 pm

To both questions, Prajna gave a single powerful nod, an act similar to that of a proud child’s. Prajna released its hair and again, introduced itself, “Yes. Is Prajna.”

At one point, the wily redhead picked up a sense of confusion from Revontulet. She had released her name to the Star but turned away, her eyes looking elsewhere. It made Prajna think of some movies it had watched where a noblewoman who was tore in her romantic feelings or overwhelmed with confusion would look away, puzzled and faint. Tilting its head in piqued interest, Prajna floated closer and further examined the beauty of Revontulet’s features, looking for some clarification. Had Prajna done something? Perhaps she was merely trying to wrap her head around the concept, seeing as she was a newborn?

In an attempt to sympathize, Prajna warily extended a hand and, albeit somewhat rudely, slipped its slender fingers under Revontulet’s chin and turned her face back towards its own. A full on smile didn’t seem manageable but a smirk? Much more do-able. With that thought established, Prajna offered the girl a trademark curl of its mischievous lips. The Star stated, “Revontulet… is a nice name. Befitting of a nice face. …Would like to sit by our lady-folk?

Namini couldn’t contain her happiness at running into another kindhearted guardian, though her eyes rarely left Prajna and Revontulet… in case something were to happen. But at the word “handsome”, Namini returned to Doucette and chuckled, “Sorry. I don’t mean to laugh at your comment. Prajna… is difficult so that’s why I find that compliment amusing. My brother and I started raising Prajna a few years back, but… you know? Prajna has never once answered our question about its gender. I think it thinks it’s all a game, to be honest.”

Mimicking her Frei, Namini placed a gentle hand on Doucette’s and offered the woman another smile, “Revontulet is gorgeous. Her skin is like porcelain! Even at three months… wow… Raevans are always so full of surprises.” For a moment, Namini seemed to space out, her eyes tracing Revontulet’s silhouette before asking, “So! What have you guys done together so far? Do you live here in Durem, or just visiting?”

The aurora seemed completely unperturbed by the touch under her chin, tilting her gaze up to meet the star’s with a blink of her lashes and a lifting of her wings, the slightest flutter given in silent happiness. Touch. Revontulet was being touched and she had not asked or given permission. Her return smile to Prajna was warm, the hair salon now a distant, manageable concern. Reaching out with one hand, Ren touched the back of his free hand with her fingers, inquisitive and only slightly hesitant. If he could touch, couldn’t she?

Prajna is a perfect name,” the frei said, casting her gaze towards Doucette for a moment before refocusing on the other redhead before her, “Very...” Ren went silent for a moment, casting about in her mind for the word she was searching for. She knew she had heard it once before in a movie and it had sounded nice. It was a word that would sound nice next to his name. “Elegant. Prajna is a very elegant name. It is a nice sound for my tongue.

Upon the offer to rejoin their guardian’s Revon’s wings rustled slightly, folding themselves sleekly upon her back. “I like it here, with Prajna,” the aurora replied, her fingers still but a light, breathy touch upon his skin if he allowed it. Her own skin was smooth, firm but not unyielding and with the slightest dip below temperature from the average human. One would not call her chilly, but they would appreciate having her hand upon their brow when sick or the heat was quite high.

Namini’s hand on her own calmed the nervous Irish woman slightly, and seeing the two frei get along helped quite a lot as well. “You’re not sure...what gender it is?” she echoed, completely bewildered by the idea. Doucette stared at Prajna for a long moment, carefully scrutinizing it’s figure and features as if determined to discover its secret.

She gave up quickly, however. If its guardian couldn’t figure it out, surely she was not going to achieve such a feat any time soon!

We live on an island off the Gambino coast. It’s a short ferry ride to come in but I work out here so we’re always on the main land. I’ve been...thinking about moving actually, but I don’t know how I could leave my home.” Doe sighed wistfully, thinking of the little beach-front cottage and the palm trees that swayed in the wind. “It’s paradise.” But it was also difficult and with her new job she needed something more reliable than the ferry.

For a moment Doucette thought about what she and Revontulet had done since she brought her home, but she realized she was woefully lacking. “The strangest thing so far was when I got up one morning and found Ren laying in bed covered in paint. Next to her was a blue and green lava lamp that I haven’t the slightest idea where it came from. She wont let the thing out of her sight now thoug...

A coolness on the back of Prajna’s pale hands. The Star’s frosty gaze fell upon the hand Revontulet offered, her slender fingertips tracing the veins on the back of Prajna’s own extended hand. As the foreign Frei hesitatingly released her carefully selected words, Prajna remained silent. Its eyes continued to stare at the Moonstone Frei’s delicate hands for a few seconds longer before trailing its eyes up her arm, along the curvature of her feminine neck, over the edge of her frail jaw line to her effortlessly peach-stained lips. Prajna quickly forgot about their guardians and inched closer unconsciously, drawn in by Revontulet’s supple lips. Something about her was just mesmerizing, almost nostalgic…

Revontulet is like smooth rocks. Once, Prajna went shopping with Namini and in this store, there were pretty stones, different colors. Cool, smooth, shiny rocks… Revontulet is like them and Prajna thinks she is so pre—

Before Prajna could finish its compliment, having closed the gap between them a few more inches, its eyelids drooping slightly with a romantic anticipation, a petite woman approached them, beaming. For a moment, the redhead considered pushing her away but it realized where it was: the salon. It sighed as the woman motioned for the two to follow her to what looked like odd beds connected to a sink. She called out to Namini and Doucette, still smiling, “I’ll be taking these two over here for the scalp massages!”
Namini waved at the woman in recognition and approval, but quickly returned to her conversation with Doucette. There was a pause as the woman looked at Prajna’s androgynous face. “You’ll be getting a trim too right, sweetie?” she cooed. Prajna nodded before allowing the stylist to lead the way to the awkward massage beds. The Star took hold of Revontulet’s small hand and gestured towards the lady with its head.

Come with Prajna, yes? I have seen mass-oo-juss on television and no weapons, no fighting. It is safe, Revontulet.

“Gambino? So far… though I agree, it IS like paradise. We visit every so often. The beaches there are just to die for,” Namini sighed, remembering the crystal waters and the pristine sand that squeaked when you ran through it. At the explanation of the lava lamp mystery, Namini took a moment to ponder.

“Is she allowed out at night? Prajna wanders around in the night and sleeps usually in the early morning for a few hours before springing back up again. We tried getting it to stop, seeing as it’s dangerous but Prajna… doesn’t exactly like rules,” Namini explained.

Watching the drifting of Prajna’s gaze, Revon preened, straightening slightly and tilting her chin just a fraction to best reveal the smooth expanse of her skin and the gentle curves of her form. As the star drifted closer she circled his wrist with her fingers, tracing the inside of his arm and feeling the warm, pliant texture of his flesh.

With his words the newborn’s wings gave the faintest of flutters before falling onto her back one segment at a time, drifting like green sakura blossoms shaken loose from their trees. Revontulet liked the way he described her. She wished to record it, to listen to those words many times over. Drifting closer she leaned into Prajna, their ribbons brushing against one another.

thinks she is so pre—

So what? Ren looked up at the woman who had interfered, a darkness in her eyes that cleared quickly though she looked no happier for it. The star (or as she’d already begun to call him mentally, her star) was drifting away towards the interloper.

For a moment she looked perplexed, unsure what to do about the situation, but then Prajna took her hand and coaxed her towards the massage. He was promising her (and, by extension, her hair) safety and despite herself she allowed her trust in the other frei to win out, the smallest of smiles given warmly for the other's eyes alone when he looked at her. Lacing her fingers in with Prajna’s she followed close behind, reminiscent of a child sticking close to their older sibling. She liked Prajna, but that did not mean she liked this place any better.

The redheaded guardian gave a wide but nervous smile of agreement at the woman who took Revon and Praj. Hopefully the girl could behave herself long enough to enjoy herself. “You are welcome to visit any time of course,” Doe offered with a wide smile, the little slice of beach in front of her house private save for the few people who had to pass through it to get to their own homes.

Revontulet is...” the woman chewed on her lip for a moment, mulling over the choice words she was looking for. Her newborn was not so much a rule breaker, or even a wild child. Indeed, so often was Ren the perfect charge that whenever there was trouble Doucette was more shocked that it was the aurora rather than upset with her. “She is not so much allowed out at night, but she often goes anyway. Since she is a night creature she rather dislikes the daytime and often stays up much later and sleeps in longer. Often she comes to school with me though, which tires her out and ensures she gets to sleep at a more normal hour.

With little hesitation, the woman motioned for the two Freis to the beds. She ran one well-manicured hand against the smooth leather surface of the bed, smiling still, “Just lay yourselves down on the beds. Try and place your neck in the groove here.” The young woman pointed to the opening curve of the black marble sink. The lack of a lower torso did not seem to bother the girl too much. “If you need me to help you lay down, I can too.”

Prajna gave her a dismissive hand and turned to Revontulet, ignoring a set of approaching blonde women. One possessed beach-perfect waves while the other proudly displayed straight locks, punched with magenta tips. They walked over and positioned themselves at the base of the sinks. The Star could only assume, from their lack of jewelry and by the smooth but prominently veined appearance of their hands, that they would do the washing, the pampering it had witnessed people on television receive, in commercials and dramas. The usually suspicious redhead eventually concluded that yes, this procedure would all be fine and safe. Even if it weren’t, Prajna wasn’t going to let Revontulet be unsettled quite yet. Until a more obvious threat made its appearance, Prajna was going to continue seizing this knightly opportunity.

With the turquoise Frei’s dainty palm still in hand, Prajna attempted a smile. Nothing soft or graceful but something of the enthusiastic, almost reckless sort.

Come Revontulet. Will be alright. Will feel good. Promises” Prajna purred, squeezing her hand lightly for emphasis. It had overlooked the small storm that had built up in its companion’s eyes, ignorant to the cliffhanger it had left her at. …Or had it? Suddenly Prajna floated closer, its crow-like wings beating once, twice, hard. One could even say passionately. The woman who had guided them there had long gone and the two blondes watched in a bit of romantic anticipation. Prajna did not care. If anything, it enjoyed the attention.

The Star brought itself within a few inches of Revontulet’s face before using its free hand to tuck some loose waves behind her ear, still smiling. It gestured then to the bed, “Prajna can help lay Revontulet down if wanted.” There was a small devilish glint in its eye.

Namini’s eyes too were twinkling now! She imagined the warm beach, the exfoliating sand between her pruned and painted toes. She thought of the Gambino waters, endlessly sparkling and pleasantly cool. The young brunette could only begin to consider the summertime beverages the bars and restaurants must have served now, drinks laced with sugar, pineapple or in coconuts. Unintentionally, she let out a yearning sigh, “We would looovee to visit, Doe. Is it alright if I call you “Doe” as well? Ah.. man, it’s been so long since I went to the beach. I don’t know if Prajna particularly likes it but it’d be a nice experience, I bet.”

As Namini finished, she noted the other woman’s contemplative expression and listened intently as Doucette explained her Frei’s mannerisms. Nodding now and again, Namini felt like she could relate so much to her new friend. “Prajna does too! It just kind of..wanders at night! If Prajna gets lost too, I had it memorize my cell phone number. I tried giving it some money once, for taxi fare, should it ever get lost but it kept going out and buying trinkets with that so I stopped. But…school… I had never thought to take Prajna to my nursing classes. I’ll have to keep that in mind!”

The aurora watched every movement around her with hawk-like precision, gaze slipping from Prajna to the other women who approached and motioned politely at the seats. Ren gave a little shiver of distaste, her wings making a soft rustling sound like spring leaves caught in a breeze before lofting curiously as the star filled her view and moved even closer.

His eyes were a sharp, rich blue that she recognized from the ocean outside her bedroom window. They were beautiful, she thought, not breaking his gaze as a few loose strands of hair were tucked behind her ear, the texture of the frei’s hair a delicate balance between smooth silk and soft curls. The shorter strands looped around the edge of her ear and tickled at her cheek but there was no concern to remove the distraction.

If you need me to help you lay down, I can too.

Prajna will help me, not you” she said, though she directed her words not at the woman but the frei that leaned close to her.

Revontulet tilted her head slightly, like a kitten curious about a thing before its eyes. “How will you help me? I know how to lay down.” Lifting her free hand she moved it to her chest, fingers touching the expanse of pale skin just below her collar bones, “You will touch here?” she questioned, though it didn’t come out in the way she’d intended. Was he going to push her back like this? The logistics of assisting a floating thing to lay down escaped the younger girl, but obviously the star had some idea, for the smile it was giving Ren was not entirely polite.

Oh do call me Doe!” she said with a warm smile, “Practically everyone does and my full name is just such a mouthful!” The redhead had relaxed into her seat finally, no longer feeling like she would be needed to jump up at a moment’s notice to placate Ren (or worse, save someone else). “You do nursing? she asked, latching onto the other woman’s career choice with interest.

When the Irish woman had decided she was interested in a career change (or, as her mother saw it, gaining an actual career for the first time), nursing had been a temporary consideration for her. The idea of helping people and meeting lots of interesting folks had been a major sell, but the amount of schooling and the general...ickiness of the job had not endeared it to serious consideration. Although she could handle boo-boos and blood and pamper someone back to health like no one’s business, there was something about the unepected nature of illness and having to see the icky day in and day out that had made her turn the page to another career. And she was happy now with what she had chosen.

Prajna’s androgynous features could not hide the amount of surprise it felt with Revontulet’s reaction. The Star was not flustered or irritated but genuinely, wholeheartedly surprised. It seemed as if she had understood the Star’s offer yet, as she lay a few of her svelte fingers against her porcelain chest, Prajna had to wonder if she really did understand what had been proposed. Otherwise, why was she touching her chest in such a suggestive manner? Its cerulean eyes heavy with thought, Prajna realized it was best not to question the newborn, for fear of either hurting her pride or the Star’s own. If there was a misunderstanding somewhere here, Prajna felt it would be better to simply redirect its companion’s attention to avoid any conflict.

Running its fingers through Revontulet’s satiny tresses yet again, Prajna let out a small laugh, a jingle of an infectious giggle. Its voice was neither mocking nor fake, a rare sound. Smiling, the Star suddenly slipped its hand behind the girl’s neck and, in one swift motion, pushed her downwards towards the bed, with its other arm cradling her partially developed side. It was an attempted dip that seemed to fail a bit, simply because the two Freis lacked the weight necessary to make for a smooth transition. The blondes chuckled a bit as they turned to slip on their aprons and prepare the shampoos.

As the women turned their backs, Prajna’s smirk widened as it unrestrainedly yet tenderly nuzzled the side of Revontulet’s cheek, apologetic, “Not trying to scare, Revontulet. Prajna just trying to do as t.v. does.

It relaxed its hold on its newfound friend and tried to lay her down as gently as possible, minding the Frei’s wings. “Is okay?

Namini nodded a few times, a bit too enthusiastically. Just as she was about to answer though, another stylist approached them, “You have the appointment right? Can you follow me?” Namini flashed the woman a smile and stood up, but her eyes revealed her yearning to stay by Doe’s side. The brunette motioned to her redheaded friend as she followed the stylist to a nearby chair.

“Come, come! Talk to me while I get my ends trimmed. It shouldn’t take long,” Namini begged as she took a seat nearby in a large, leather salon chair. As she was cloaked and her curly brown curls examined, she continued her conversation, clearly unfazed by the distracting hair stylist’s motions, “Yes! I study nursing. I’m still just a student but I really like working with people. The occasional kid throwing up on you and the long hours can be a bit much to get used to but I’m used to working hard so I’m okay. What do you do, Doe?”

Revontulet had never once, in her entire short life, envied Doucette’s unnerving ability to blush at the slightest of whispers. The way the back of her neck pinked into a deep red as the colour crept into her cheeks and darkened the multitude of freckles had been nothing but offensive to the moonlit frei. Such a colour would have been wholly unbecoming upon her beautiful cheeks, she had felt.

But as Prajna tenderly wrapped his arms about her and dipped her much as she had seen in the beautiful movies she watched so much, she wished her cheeks could turn such a bashful shade. It seemed appropriate now, for this moment, as the star brushed its cheek with hers. All the aurora could manage was a breathy “Oh,” her voice catching slightly in her throat and causing it to pitch unnaturally.

In the movies,” she said after a brief moment, nodding her head to the question of whether his actions were ok, “they say swept off her feet. Can I used it now, Prajna?” Revon looked down the length of her ribbon, the tip of it giving a languid curl much as a mermaid’s tail would do lounging upon the sand. Although she had no feet with which to be swept off of, if she had she was sure the star would have accomplished just such a thing.

Doucette followed the other energetic guardian to the chair they placed her in, taking a seat in the one nearest it after ensuring it wouldn’t be in use or her in the way any time soon. The redhead kept an eye out at Namini spoke, wanting to make sure she’d not be causing any trouble by sitting there despite their assurance that she was fine.

I’m not so sure how I would deal with the kids throwing up on me that often,” the woman said with a slight laugh, a little wrinkle of her nose giving away the distaste of the situation. If she had to handle it she could with little complaint (which she knew was more than other people could say) but it was not something she willingly accepted into a daily routine. Her own job had the odd sick kid, but usually they made it to the clinic before it became her problem. “I’m a kindergarten teacher. Shorter hours, lots of fun,” Doe said with a grin, delighted to speak about a job and not feel even a hint of embarrassment over the choice as she had before.
