Euthyphro sunk down into the cool water, spreading his wings over the surface and letting the small ripples lap over his feathers. It felt incredible. The sun had come out full force and it was simply far, far too hot out. Almost immediately, he began drifting off.

Judah was furious. How had she let this happen to her AGAIN? Trembling, she stood on the sandbar, terrified the current would wash her away and drown her. How the hell was she supposed to get out of this? She was stranded and for what? A fish? To hell with fish! She'd kill them all right now if she could.
Spreading her wings, she tried to jump high enough to get them out of the water and grasp the air, but they were far to wet and waterlogged to do much more than drag her back down. If she didn't stop she'd likely miss the sandbar on her next jump and that would be the end of it.
Frustrated, she tipped her head back and let out an angry screech.

The lake was large enough that Euth could just drift around for hours, swimming between the islands. He was fairly familiar with the area so sometimes he'd swim about for a while with his eyes closed. It was peaceful out on the water. Even the birds seemed further away.
He was just coasting under a log when he heard the screech. For half a moment, he'd thought it was a bird, but no. He'd never heard a bird like that in his life.
There was an island not so far away, so he changed course and headed there to dry off. A few minutes later and he'd shaken himself off well enough to fly. Despite the fact that he was still unsure from where or what the sound had came from he lept into the air and begun circling the lake.

What was she going to do? She was going to die here. She couldn't swim. She couldn't get her wings out of the water long enough to dry so she could fly. How had she managed to get herself so utterly stranded yet again? She was going to die of starvation or exposure. She was a bloody fool. A damn bloody fool.
Still angry, she thrashed about, furiously slapping the water with her tail. She screeched again, stomping her hooves. A bit of the sandbar came loose and she stumbled, nearly falling off. A strangled cry came off her lips as she backed up, terrified. Oh hell...

It didn't take him long to spot the mass of kalona writhing about in the water. He sighed and descended. To his surprise, it was the exact same mare who'd failed to work her way up off the ice earlier that year. He sighed as he hovered in front of her, great wings causing ripples in the water as he flapped. "Tell me something... how is it that you stay alive?"

Keeping low to the sandbar, Judah looked up when she heard the sound of wings. Surely it was the gulls, already beginning to circle. She cursed loudly, ready to roar at them and scare them away. What she found instead was almost more disgusting.
"Oh, goodie," she sneered, giving the green angeni a deep scowl. "You again. My favourite person!" Another bit of sand came loose and she darted back another few steps. She was going to run out of sandbar soon.
"Don't mock me. Just go, leave me alone to die."

He tilted his head a little was she serious? After everything he and Auster had done for her last time. Well, mostly Auster. She couldn't possibly be serious. What a waste. "You came out to the middle of a lake to die? Surely there has to be an easier way than standing in the middle of a lake screaming."

Judah gave him a scathing look. "I did not come out here to die!" she snapped, her tail slashing through the water again. "I don't want to die, but I don't have much of a choice now, do I."
She looked around the lake pointedly. "Look at all the water. I can't swim." She lifted her wings to show how useless they were to her. "I can't fly. I'm going to die here and there's nothing I can do about it. So just go and leave me alone in peace."

His frown grew deeper, "You do very well have a choice. Denying my aid simply because you're not fond of me is deciding to die here and now. If you want to live, I suggest you stop thrashing about. Even from up here I can see that the sandbar you're standing on is dwindling away every time you stomp your feet. So knock that off, hold still, and just think for crying out loud!"
He looked back and forth across the lake, looking for anything that would help her get out on her own. While he was fairly certain it wasn't any sort of trap, he still didn't want to give this female who clearly disliked him so much that she didn't even consider him a real source of help the chance to do him harm. There had to be another way, any other way.
"Wait here. I'm going to go see if I can find something to help pull you out of there..."

Judah gave the green angeni a dark look. "I'm not refusing your help because I don't like you," she muttered. It was true that she didn't like him, but she was not that petty. Self-preservation was far more important than a grudge. "I just don't see what you can do to help."
Looking down at the sandbar, she had to admit that he was right though. The sandbar was slipping away. Soon she would have nowhere to stand and there really would be no hope. That would be the end. She'd never thought before that she would be afraid to die, but now faced with almost certain death, she was terrified.
"Well, it's not like I'm about to go anywhere!" she shouted after him, cowering on the little bit of sandbar she had remaining. He couldn't help. How could he? She was going to drown.

He glided over the lake, looking for anything that she could use to support herself while she paddled to shore. After a short flight that felt far longer than it really was, he spotted a log floating in the water. It was new enough that it hadn’t yet become waterlogged, and large enough that it would at least help her keep her head out of the water.
He lowered his altitude enough so he could catch a hoof on a branch then started flying back toward the stupid kalona. It was hard going. If he let himself get too low his wings brushed the water and made it hard to fly. If he went too high his hoof came away from the branch and he lost control of the log.
After what seemed like ages the mare came back into view.
“Kalona! Good to see you haven’t drowned yet!”

When the angeni returned, Judah was crouched down low on the minscule bit of sandbar she had left, looking absolutely terrified. Even though she'd stopped struggling, the sandbar was still slipping away because of her earlier thrashing. It was nearly almost gone now. Any longer and it may have been too late.
Looking up at the winged stallion, Judah was too frightened to even give him a sarcastic reply. "What are you doing?" she rasped, sounding much like a very scared little girl rather than a mighty kalona.
"How is that log going to help?"

He brought it up as close to her as he could without actually banging it into her. "Can you rear up and hook your feet over it? If you can manage that much I'll be able to drag you to the shore."

Judah looked at the log skeptically. She really didn't think this would work. What was he thinking? She would drown before they got even halfway there. The log would never support her! Glancing up at him, she would've demanded him that question except she fully knew what he was thinking.
This was the only possible way to save her. It was try this and possibly die, or stay on the sandbar and definitely die.
"Okay," she said, her voice shaky. She only had one shot at this. If she reared and missed, her feet hitting the sandbar would likely cause the rest of it to wash away. She closed her eyes and bit her lip. Here goes nothing.
Her glowing eyes snapped open again, and she seemed to have pulled a reserve of calm from somewhere. She scrutinized the log critically and when she was certain, she reared up and hooked her legs over it, holding on as tightly as she could. "What now?"

"Try lifting your hind legs off the sandbar without rolling the log. I will be trying to stabilize it but if you pull back too hard there won't be anything I can do about it," he dipped as low as he could without touching the water. "And whatever you do, keep calm. If you panic you will roll it."
