This Quest is for Jerarda who wishes to be a Warrior.
OOC ||. You may not control any NPCs or other characters; Jerarda must face her trials alone. ||. Respond to the prompts given as you would any other RP. ||. Your responses may be as long or short as you feel necessary.
IC There were murmurings on Chibale. More Earthlings had been discovered in Sauti and Zena. How many more would they find in their land? How bold were the Earthlings getting? There were Halfbreed Alkidikes everywhere, it seemed, finding ranking positions in the tribe. Some shrugged and let it be- they were children of Mother Aisha, after all. But others were belligerent and restless. The Earthlings were growing too bold! They needed to be shown who were truely entitled to the land.
Restless Alkidikes meant trouble, and that meant that it was time to bring them under control, while addressing their issues. It was time for a grand hunt: promising young blades would be sent out to find some trophy of great value and bring it back to Chibale. It served three purposes: It demonstrated the strength of the Alkidikes to Earthlings, it reassured those Alkidikes who were uneasy about the changes in their world- they were still strong, after all- and it gave the young blades a chance to prove themselves worthy of the title of warrior- and something to do besides instigate conflicts. Messages were sent out...
Jerarda: When you wake up for a new day of punishment, you find a note waiting for you under a light pack of supplies.
Jerarda, You have been chosen as one of the warriors to participate in the great hunt. Since you are being punished for bringing the Shifter Takoda to our island, you will not be assigned a team. Instead, you must affirm your loyalty to our tribe by undertaking this alone. You must find a creature worthy of a great warrior, hunt it, and bring back an equally worthy trophy of your success. If you return with the trophy, and the elders approve, you will be forgiven.
The hunt begins.
Please solo out these things: || Figuring out what to hunt- feel free to make up something suitably awesome || Travelling to where you will hunt it and the hunt itself || Finding the creature
DO NOT ENGAGE THE CREATURE YET. Just make it up and find it, and let me know when you are done.

The plan The days of her punishment were teaching her one thing, patience. It was something similar to pulling teeth but she was learning it if slowly. By the time she had woken up to find the letter beside her, she seemed hardly surprised to find it there. Upon reading it she felt several emotions run through her. The fact her loyalty was being questioned brought to mind all sorts of words she felt were appropriate to describe how she felt. That and the fact she had been hearing rumors passing between lips about the earthlings and the half breeds and how they were becoming too bold, too arrogant and how some wanted to teach them a lesson. Being that Rishima was a hybrid she felt her hackles raise every time she heard such words being uttered and would cast dark looks at her sister or sisters who would utter such nonsense in her presence. This only reconfirmed her desire to unite the tribes...for old grudges were making her sisters foolish and stupid. Getting up she crumpled the letter out of anger and threw it to the ground. She wanted to talk to the elders, wanted to confront them about such an insulting letter being handed to her. And this is what she did. Quickly dressing, her anger still boiling she strode towards the elders hut. The two amazonian guards standing in front of the entrance however barred her way. Jerarda demanded to speak to the elders, but she was refused entrance. Somehow they figured she would come and had prepared for it. One of the guards sneered at her making a comment about how she was an earthling hugger which almost gained her a punch in the face. Reigning in her anger she clenched her teeth her hand on the shaft of her spear clutching it until the knuckles where white. She then turned away...stalking off and back to her home. Upon entering her house she spotted the letter still laying where she had thrown it. What were they expecting her to do? The great hunt were for the younger folk to prove themselves worthy of taking up the spear, bow or blades. She had already undergone her own trials growing up and it was an insult to her to have to do it again to prove herself loyal. What were they expecting her to do? Go over the the mainland hunt down a shifter and bring back his head? Was that the only way to prove that she wouldn't betray her sisters? The great tree? She would need to act like a barbarian and kill anyone she didn't understand or know on sight? Growling she was going about her home, snatching items she may need for her journey and pausing...grabbed a bag that could fit something about the size of a humanoid head in it. A plan forming in her mind, she would test her elders...see what it was they thought by tricking them. She would not of course hunt any earthling, but something with a similar sized head to place within the bag. She would trick them into thinking she killed one of them and then she would see how they would react. If they were pleased...then she would express to them how wrong their thoughts were on the subject. If they were horrified and she hoped that they would be, then she would be able to feel comfort that the old hatreds were not coming back full force and an all out war was looming ahead of them. Stalking from her home she felt a calmness spread over her, she couldn't help but worry that the elders would be pleased by the idea of her bringing back and earthling head. It made her nervous and a sinking sensation in the pit of her stomach. No...she would need to believe they were not locked in the dark ages...and spreading that distrust and hatred among her sisters. Most of her sisters stayed away from her, as if unsure on how they should feel about her going on a great hunt as punishment. To re-establish her loyalty. There was unease and she knew it but she strode forward her back straight and determination in her gaze. She wished for a moment that Rishima was here...than Phenyo was here...but quickly tucked those emotions away. This was a gamble her plan..she only hoped it would play out how she wished it.

The dying forest Stepping into her boat, and placing her supplies down she took up her paddle and then proceeded to make her way to the mainland. All the while trying to figure out what creature would best suit her needs for this charade to be believable. It would have to have a head about the same size as an earthlings so it couldn't be very large. Distracted she almost didn't notice that the current was taking her way off course...and thus when she finally noted that she wasn't heading in the right direction she hardly had the will to try and get herself back on course. Letting the current dictate where she was headed and only using her paddle to angle herself towards the shoreline she found herself landing on a part of the shore she had never explored before. Still deep in her thoughts she realized slowly..there was a reason for it. The shore ..although clear of debri, the forest looked like it was dying here. Webbing hung on branches, drifting in a cool breeze that whistled through the trees. Jerarda wasn't stupid, she knew the what the webbing belonged to, Menzuri. And judging by how much of it was strewn about...many many of them. Taking her satchel out of the canoe she grabbed her spear and flexed her hand, watching...waiting for a sign of life in the depths of the dying part of the forest. A sigh as she shifted her weight in the sands and then made a running leap for one of the lower branches and began climbing. The tree's here were either dying or dead and she had to be quick on her feet to anticipate a branch breaking under her weight. Traveling swiftly she explored the depths of the forest, looking for a sign of what was causing it to die...but only encountered more webbing as she went. Intact webbing. A creature like the menzuri was something to be respected and feared. Venomous and large, with a crystal body that made it very difficult to kill.Such a creature would be a coveted prize but didn't really suit her needs. Though she would have little choice in the matter as her presence was known and she was being watched...and stalked.

The dying forest loomed around her. It seemed like it was woven together with the poisonous menzuri webs, as if the predators were all that held it together, living and dead. Things here were interconnected, living plants were tied to dead ones by root and vine and web. Things bent and strained against moorings that changed the way the water moved just below the boggy surface.
The river here was murky and harsh- who knew what lurked in there. Hints of slimy creatures slipped just below the surface, and the occasional gleam of eyes sparkled from the water.
This was not a safe place, definitely not one to linger in long.
The path before Jerarda was cramped and nearly swallowed whole with webbing. Traveling could prove too dangerous to pass, most would fear getting caught in a web, never to be heard from again.
But Jerarda would have to move quickly and with care. A sense of ominous malevolence saturated the air, seeming to drip from the trees and spew from the bog holes and whisper in the withered foliage and abandoned webs.
She was being watched. She was being followed.

Sizing it up
The situation didn't look so great, after all the forest was rotting all around her and the most obvious way out was just as treacherous as everything else. The mire which could be called a bog was casting a smell that made one cringe and Jerarda was no acceptation. Looking over shoulder she had the sense that something was indeed watching her. But not matter how hard she scanned her surrounding area there was nothing that stood out to her besides the already unnatural dying forest around her. Clutching her spear in hand, she shifted the sack on her shoulder. The limbs of the tree's around her looked...less than stable. Most of the tree's were dead..or in the process of dying the likeliness of any of them supporting her weight was not going to happen. So she would have to proceed on foot, which was a challenge in and of itself. The webbing was thick in places and even if the webbing wasn't fresh and intact, they could still be very potent. A deep sigh and she proceeded forward, her antenna would help provide information about the area. When she went to stand on a stone she had to back up realizing it wasn't a stone at all, but a strange flat insect with a hard shell. It didn't seem to want to engage with Jerarda but was irritated with being bothered and thus after a hiss and click of its mandibles meandered off towards the mire in front of her. The alkidike was about to move forward when something launched itself out of the water to engulf the bug. Leaping backwards she readied her spear to defend herself only to find that..the strange reptilian thing was paying her no mind and was instead crunching down on the insect with its strong jaws and sharp teeth. So there were things in the water, given how much debre was covering the water's surface...the creature (still chowing down) had been completely camouflaged. Wonderful. Climbing through the trees seemed impossible and crossing through the mire a dangerous idea. So how was she going to do it? Moving sideways she tried to make her way around the mire but she shortly discovered that it was too big across to make any sort of efficient headway. Grumbling she knew she had to keep moving, that sense...unnatural as it is of something watching her had yet to leave her. It wouldn't of surprised her in the least if it was a menzuri hunting her. Though..she didn't see any large crystalline forms that seem to be following her every move...so what could it be? There was no sense agonizing over it, she just needed to head deeper into the forest and see if she could find something she could hunt for her test... a shiver ran through her body as she quickly analyzed the area, she spotted a rise of rock in the distance that was her destination she just had to get there. Moving she climbed the closest tree to get a better vantage point. Every crack and creak it uttered only proved what she already knew, that it was rotting away..and once she had settled on the branch she tried to gauge how far across the mire was. It wasn't all the wide thankfully but it extended from both sides for quite a length...it dawned on her that..this was more a stagnant river than a bog. Part of her felt foolish at this discovery but there was little time to waste as she quickly calculated the next tree branch. The tree looked...healthier than the rest, but due to this fact it seemed to also have the most webbing. Should she test her luck? Commen sense dictated that she should not jump, after all jumping she could land in the venomous webbing which could prove fatal if she was hallucinating in this place. Still even as she went to shifter her weight, preparing to make her way back down there was a sickening crack. The branch she was perched on was giving way, it was either jump now or plummet to the forest floor. She did was any inclined tree dweller would do. Jump. Her legs were strong, there was no question that she would make the jump, but as her arms spread out to catch her balance part of her wrist and forearm got wrapped up in the sticky webbing. Luckily the effect wasn't instant and she was able to secure her footing and cling to the tree's base before she began to feel feverish.

The Fever High up on a tree branch clung the alkidike Jerarda, she had tried to remove the webbing from where it stuck to her forearm but only managed to spread it around to the hand trying to remove the stuff and thus spreading the venom around a greater surface area. The world spun, and every time she looked to the forest floor or rather the bog it seemed to rise up to great her as if happy to see her. It forced her to close her eyes and take a slow swallow. What was she going to do? She could try and lower herself to the ground and stumble her way through the mire or stay in the tree and risk falling out of it. Neither seemed very appealing but perhaps if she got to the ground she could wash the webbing off? Though her mind was spinning Jerarda was pretty sure that the venom was only through contact with the webbing and if she could wash it off she should start to feel better. So there was really only one possible thing she could do. Climb down and hope nothing thought she was a tasty and try to eat her. A shuddering sigh escaped her lips, the idea of dragging herself down from the tree branch was enough to make her want to beat her head against the tree instead. Perhaps she could close her eyes and feel her way down? The going was slow, for every time she opened her eyes she felt like the tree was coming alive to eat her. A troubling and disturbing thought. When her feet managed to touch soil she wasn't entirely sure how much time had past. Trying to reference the sun made it look as it it was growing so large as to engulf the world, so her gaze primarily was latched to the ground or closed. But she would need to get to the waters edge, and even with her spear still in hand she had no idea if it would be of any help to her. Using it like a cane she slowly worked her way to the bog's edge, moving to kneel down if hesitantly (and for good reason) she reached forward and thought she was aiming for the water...but instead found only mud. Confused she tried again and again... *** Much time past, nothing came to eat the alkidike in her feverish state, and by the time her head head clear the woman was covered in mud. It was drying on her skin and made her incredibly itchy, but there was no time to wash it off, if she was lucky it may rain but for now she needed to make up lost time. With the bog out of the way she was making great progress to the rock wall she had seen in the distance. Soon she found herself there, though that presence of something watching her still lingered in the back of her mind, she now had to ponder scaling the wall.

Jerarda’s troubles in the Dying Forest seemed to be only beginning. Thankfully for her, her head was clearing; she was going to need it desperately for what was to come next.
Within the dead and dying trees a rustling began to make its presence known to Jerarda. A strange mixture of whispers and clicks seemed to surround her from all sides. It would stop in one area, only to resume in another, the sounds gradually getting louder. The clicking noises sounded angry, irritated, and closer than they were minutes before. The whispering was indiscernible, like babbling of something not quite right, it couldn't possibly be in the earthling tongue.
The sounds grew to the point of a loud roar before suddenly... stopping.
The noise and all trace of it had vanished it seemed, leaving Jerarda alone once again. A single click emerged from the forest before a fireball entered Jerarda's space with a great force, breaking the silence and setting a nearby tree aflame.

It was for certain a good thing that she had waited and washed off the venomous webbing before this event occurred. Otherwise she was pretty sure that fire ball would of hit her. The clicking sounds were enough to make her wonder if she was hearing things, the hairs on her arms prickling as she was convinced that she was going insane and then there was silence. Then fire.
Jumping back she found her footing still unstable and her ankle twinged in protest at the awkward way she had landed. Shaking her head to try and clear her vision she found that the sound of the tree crackling behind her was indeed very real, as another ball of fire shot towards her it only confirmed that this was no hallucination .
It was lucky that even though this part of the forest was dying, the amount of sludge and mire that was around would localize what parts of the tree's caught on fire...that is...until it hit webbing. Even this much Jerarda could recognize as being a huge problem. So should she fight whatever it was that was trying to shoot fireballs at her? Or try and make sure the entire section of forest didn't catch on fire? Rather than come to any sort of conclusion herself she had to avoid more fire balls being sent her way. The hiss and crackle as fire landed in the waters indicated some things weren't catching on fire.
Where was it?

The forest's sludge quickly ate up any and all remaining flames from the previous attack and left Jerarda in silence once again. The wind through the dead trees seemed to create an eerie disharmony of sound that could throw a chill up even the toughest warrior's spine.
The whispering in the forest seemed to abruptly bubble up to drown out the creaking of the dead wood, and from the trees a gnarled, cloaked figure with black mandibles coming from its head emerged from the forest with enough speed to launch another fire ball at Jerarda.
Jerarda seemed to have entered into this strange thing's territory, and though it wasn't hard to guess from the surrounding whispering, it wasn't alone. It seemed the Dying Forest wasn't just home to menzuri. The bug mage before her drove up a fiery barricade, cutting Jerarda off from what seemed to be all means of escape.
[Jerarda must fight her way out of this perilous situation she's found herself in. The solo may be as long or as short and contain as many bug mages as is necessary.]

The crackle and hiss of fire hitting trees and other foliage caused Jerarda to take another small back step. The thing coming out of the shadow launched more attacks at her and she was forced to move or be hit with more blasts of fire. The heat coming up from behind alerted her that her means of escaping the way she came was now cut off. Feeling the heat on her back and the smell of the smoke as the mire burned it seemed to shake off the haze she was feeling earlier from the menzuri web venom.
A jump to the side her hand tightening on her spear as she was going to have to try and either kill this...thing...or get away from it. Her pride wouldn't allow her to run she she would have to fight. At first even as she came to terms with her situation she was still having troubles accepting the fact what she was going to fight was not...like any one she had ever seen.
Not that she was going to get a moment to truly analyze what.. it was, all she had to worry about was another ball of fire coming her way. She needed to put it out of commission she wasn't the type to just kill whatever it was off, how much worse would she be if she ended up contradicting herself by killing off something or someone she was sure of?
Too close. As her skin got uncomfortably hot as she dodged another blast she knew she needed to get her head in the game. Moving forward she went to strike with the shaft of the weapon but found that the creature was much faster than she anticipated. A blast from behind and she had to roll in order to avoid being hit. What?!
Looking up as she recovered from the roll she spotted not one but now two of the strange creatures, both wielding fire and neither of them seemed inclined in talking...if they were even able to. The clicks and hisses she heard sounded as if they were conversing with each other, as if they knew she couldn't understand what they could be plotting. She needed to scale this wall, but it would make her a prime target to not one but now two fire blasts.
The tree. She needed to get back into the tree, maybe she could get some webbing on her spear tip..the venom was still potent and if she managed to hit either of them with it she could possible get out of this alive...wait why was she continuing to plan to attack them? Perhaps it was her stubborn pride getting the best of her or old habits rearing their ugly head. Either way she needed to get out before her hand was forced.
Sizing up the pair before her she took no consolation as she brought her spear up and then down cracking it over one of the bug like things heads. It gave a hissing cry as it staggered strange hands coming up to grasp where it had been hit. Being it was only the shaft of the spear she could hardly claim it did much damage other than being a sharp sudden sort of pain. But the creatures companion was on the move, fire bursting for like a fierce flower in bloom. Darting to the side she made a strategic retreat back for the tree she had only come down from prior this.
It was close to the waters edge, and it was a good thing she caught sight of something rippling below the surface it its murky surface. Wasting no time she lept to the tree scaling it quickly, a bug Mage advancing quickly behind her. It was going to follow her it seem but a fortunate (or unfortunate) commotion was occurring that brought the Mage around.
Splashing, and screaming.
Apparently the Mage she hadnhitnhad gotten too close to the waters edge, a creature similar to one she had seen upon entering the mire had lept out of the water and grabbed hold of the mages leg and was intent on dragging it into the water with it. Jerarda soon realized that it was an opportune time to escape and even as she readied herself to leap she felt a wings of guilt. The Mage was still screaming even as the other went to its aid, beating the creature with flame that seemed to have little effect on the creature armoured hide.
A sigh. She was probably going to regret this.
Leaping down spear still in hand she silently ran forward. A startled cry uttered form one mouth as the other body turned to face her hand raised. But Jera only pushed past, aiming her spear quickly as she the thrust it into the creature's skull. It got the desired effect, although she lost her spear in the process. Flailing the creature released it iron hold in the bug's leg but Jera wasted no time leaping back and giving up trying to grab her spear again. Task down she turned and retreated back to the tree.
Wasting no time she took this moment to tense her muscles and spring off the closest branch to the ledge. Soaring she knew...suddenly she wasn't going to make it. Falling short she managed to stop her descent (although ripping through her hand bandages and bloodying her hands). She hung a moment trying to make sense of what happened a sitting duck for any who wanted an easy shot at her back.
She waited for it but nothing came, and once her senses returned to her she climbed the couple feet she was to the ledge and then sprinted away. Whither the creature was too focused on its injured companion or it actually had a sense of deceny, a life for a life sort of deal she would only have to guess...but she wasn't about to wait and ask for clarification.
Jerarda ran till she thought she could run no more, climbed the only decent semi living tree around and rested.

After the commotion of the battle, the silence that surrounded Jerarda was almost too much to take in. The bug mages were nowhere to be seen, apparently given up on pursuing Jerarda for whatever the reason might have been. Jerarda was out of danger for now and deserved a rest; Though her surroundings were still dangerous and could change for the worst in a second's notice.
Nothing seemed to happen as Jerarda caught her breath, and as she inspected her new surroundings, something seemed to be happening around her. It seemed she had pushed south, south enough that the trees were starting to look alive, hardly any covered in webbing. It was almost as if the forest itself was breathing a sigh of relief, knowing that this part had not yet been claimed. Looking further ahead of her, she could make out denser and denser forest and even the skittering of animals.
She had made it out. But the question still stood, what would she be taking home to the elders now? Would she even take anything back at all, after her strange encounter with the bug mages?

Even as she sat there she could feel the forest around her, this part had not yet been contaminated and as if its life was being shared with her while she rested. She had anticipated the strange bug creatures to follow and now weapon less she wondered how smart it had been risking her life to save so etching that tried to kill her.
Not that she was completely unarmed she could still kick and punch as she had trained herself to do when young. But the question remained....what was she going to do? Her plan to take back a fake shifter head still seemed her best plan, but after all the commotion, running and evading fire the rage she had suffered from earlier was only a smouldering piece of charcoal. Was she being immature with her idea?
It had been a bit drastic but the idea was to get across a point as well see where her elders values lay. Looking behind her she knew she would need to get her spear back...if that was even possible and she could have a chance encounter with those mages again...she rubbed her temples and then slowly climbed down from the tree, she would need to be careful....she didn't want to re-enter the swamp....but she didn't have many options left to her.
Quietly she went back, stopping at the ledge and looking around to see if the spear was in sight or if those mages were still in the area. One would be injured that much she knew....but what about the other one?

Lucky for Jerarda, when she looked over the ledge to the area that she had encountered the mages, she found nothing. Not any mages at least. The area below her was oddly calm, the fire that was raging before was no where to be seen, seemingly gone with the mages. There was a trail of greenish goop, what could only be blood, left behind in a short line before disappearing. It was as if the bug mages had vanished.
There was a circle of ash from the fire that had been previously burning, with small areas still smoldering and smoking. The muck water where the creature had interrupted the fight was coated in a sticky slime, something that had not been there before and could only be described as odd and giving off a foul odor.
Near the shore of the muck, the end of the shaft of Jerarda's spear could be seen sticking out from the water.

It almost seemed too easy, relief came when she found that there was evidence she didn't t hallucinate the entire experience. Tilting her head and giving a scrunch of her nose at the distasteful smell she spotted the shaft of her spear after a moments search. Quite honestly she didn't expect to find it at all, but it was there be Kooning her to come and claim it.
The question being..was there still a creature on the other end?
Carefully she made her way down the rocky ledge, tentative and alert for any sound or movements coming from the water or the surrounding area. She didn't want to get caught off gaurd again and was on a all high alert. Frowning as she discovered the spear was just out of reach from the shore it would mean she would need to step in the water to get closer. Not something she was entirely sure she wanted to do given the sharper tooth dwellers who lived in it.
Straining she tried to reach as best she could, the tips of her fingers could brush the shaft up she could not wrap her fingers about it. Frusterated she looked around, given that she had touch the thing and gotten no reaction she felt less on edge than before. Should she just go in and grab it? Grumbling to herself she sighed readied herself and was as fast as she could manage.
It wasn't far, only a few feet into the slimy water, but it was foul and when it touched her skin she wanted to recoil. I stead she grabbed the shaft of her spear and turned. Only to discover a dead weight on the other end. Surprised the woman nearly slipped and fell into the mire and it was only sheer force of will that kept her on two feet.
Taking both hands she literally dragged the spear towards the shore, the shallow water soon revealing the dead toothy creature she had impaled earlier. The spear was deep into its eye socket, likely having penetrated the brain leading to its death, looking at it more closely she had a renewed fear of the swamp as the thing was hideous ans scaly not to mention full of thick sharp teeth. But it was the answer to her deliema, she would bri g its head to the elders...all she needed to do was cut off its head.
***
It took awhile but she had done it, the head now soaking the bag she had placed it within with blood looked grim as she walked down the dirt path and down towards the elders homes. She looked smug, and proud after all she had to be convincing in her act if she was going to play out her plan. Pushing past the two sentries who were stationed outside their huts with an air of arrogance.
"I have returned from my hunt," the alkidike woman announced loudly to get their attention quickly.
