Kono Taiyō [太陽九, Taiyō Kono || Pronounced: Koh-no Tie-yo] is the former 2nd Division Captain of the Gotei 13 and currently heads the Royal Guard.
Kono is fairly young, in appearance, for being such a prestigious rank. She has chestnut colored skin, only lightly brown with deep umber colored eyes. Her hair is black and normally let down freely behind her aside from two cloth bound, side-bangs that are the same length as the rest of her hair. Her hair reaches just past her bussom.
While in adult form, Kono wears something fitting to her previous role as 2nd Division Captain. It is comprised of a spandex-like one piece that covers her body save her arms and legs. She sports a white jacket that has its sleeves rolled over this as well as a pair of white chaps that are sewn into a belt on her waist to keep it up. She also wears a pair of black gloves.
As a child, she has her hair kept as she normally does, let down with the two bound pieces, but dons a large sun hat and a small, deep green tea dress. It is in this form that she is normally found, as she tends to like to play around and use its adorable frame to get an edge on people.
She has many outfits, one of which is a sailor-fuku outfit that is green on white that she has for both her adult and child forms.
Kono is rather playful at heart. She enjoys joking around and being completely and utterly silly. Her childish form, which she takes so often, helps to cohesively meld her innocent facade to opponents when coupled with this kind of personality.
While she enjoys being silly and messing around, she is quite intelligent, holding vast amounts of information within her mind at a time. She can analyze at quick speeds and has reflexes akin to something inhuman. While battling, she tends to keep her childish facade until she becomes serious and aims to end the fight, in which she will become a most fierce-some opponent.
She cherishes her friends and other subordinates with great care, much unlike how she was when she was the 2nd Division captain - where casualties and familial relationships were only a hinderance - and does what she can to keep them out of harms way whenever possible.
She ditches her excitable and childish air when in her adult form. When in her adult form, Kono is normally very formal and direct. She holds a sense of humor, but more or less, she is a bit stark about most anything. It is a reflection of her years within her older Division. While she stays rather poise and mature when an adult, she has moments of excitable nature that catch her off guard.
Kono lived within the Realm of the Living for a short time of her life. She was born into a small, localized Japanese family within the heart of Tokyo in its initial buds of being created. Her family was not wealthy and lived off the land around the Dynamo's grounds, giving him their dues through harvests of rice and other material. When she turned eight, it was revealed that she had a special telekinetic power. How they found out, however, was much worse than they would have cared for. On a still, humid night of July, she awoke in the night to a pain in her head before being over taken by her powers, running rampage around the small village. It lasted for only ten minutes, but the devastation was ravenous. When she awoke from it, her parents were laying beside her with not a wound on them and would not stir from their slumber. The surrounding area was soft ground riddled with splinters of wood and more than angry townspeople.
It did not take long for the Dynamo to hear of the commotion and sent out for her life to be take, believing her to be possessed by a demon and only capable of further destruction by its control. Not being a foolish child, Kono ran. She ran for years before, on her 18th birthday, she woke in the middle of her village after falling asleep elsewhere, far from it. It was again riddled in debris and the Dynamo's forces were surrounding her, lances at her throat. They allowed her last words before being cut down on the spot.
When she was reincarnated, so to speak, within the Spirit Realm, it was to well off family that resided within the Rukōngai. The family took her in and she set to work to understand what had happened; how she was still "alive". The family later explained, after being pained by her seclusive behavior from them, and she was utterly speechless. In a hurry to cope with the information handed to her, she ran off to the outskirts of the district she lived within, entering a forest and found a clearing where her powers struck her for the first time. Atsuiheki, only a faint whisper at this time, slowly sunk into her head, egging and pushing her to enter into the Shinigami forces.
With time, she finally joined and went to work within the Shinōreijutsuin. Kono caught onto all physical aspects of fighting quickly, mastering Zanjutsu, Kendo, and Hakuda with ease, excelling in her class. Hadō came easily to her, but she neither was interested in the topic nor felt the need to learn it with the other skills she learned within the school. Kono graduated earlier than most of her class due to her outstanding capabilities as well as achieving the name of her Asauchi early on.
She entered the 2nd Division, under the captainship of Kushina Tsukuda. She enjoyed her work within the 2nd Division and it suited her well. She still retained memories of her human life, an uncommon occurrence after passing on, and remembered all of the running she had done - all of the hiding. The Division, focused on stealth, served to help her excel even more than she did in the Soul Academy. Upon serving under Kushina for some time, she attained the rank of Lieutenant.
When word came around that her captain had declined a position to join the Royal Guard, something within Kono twitched, a nerve of instinct. She could not tell exactly why she felt weary about the entire thing, but she blamed it on wanting to head the Division herself. Upon the Onmitsukidō being developed in the 2nd Division, however, she got her wish. Kushina entered the Royal Guard and Kono was promoted to head the Division; and led it she did.
Her ability at stealth and mastery of close-quarters combat all served to have her Division, and its special task force, to excel at incredible speeds. She led missions that most would shy away or other Captains deemed unworthy of their attention. She witnessed many things that would normally mar someones mind with a pestilence of madness. Still, Kono persevered to pull her Division to something to reckon with. That was when everything went wrong.
An order came down from the Central 46 that many Menos Grande signatures began to fluctuate in and out of the 12th Division's detection on the outskirts of the eastern Rukongai. The 2nd was to go and investigate and eliminate any threats that may appear; to clean up the problem. It seemed like any other mission for Kono and so she led her Onmitsukidō into the far reaches of the Soul Society and investigated, finding there to be a mass of Menos Grande that were congregating. Irritated that this could even have happened, she unleashed her forces and managed to handle them before a Garganta ripped open before all of them and the Hollow poured out in a swarm of pestilence.
Before she could react accordingly, her previous captain, Kushina, released her Bankai and fended them off - that was until she tore through the sekiseki stone that protected the Seireitei from external forces. The Menos flowed in like a river and it took both Kono and many others to detain the forces and eliminate the garganta that supplied them. Kushina was marked a traitor and before punishment could be exacted, she vanished. Kono had no idea how, but it had happened. She vowed, in her small framed soul, that she would never let a criminal slip through the fingers of the Gotei 13 again. The fact that Kushina was her previous captain only strengthened that ideal and reinforced that enemies could come out of the wood work.
It was after all this subsided that Kono created the execution device that would forever serve to eradicate Shinigami who became treasonous: the Sōkyoku. She modeled it after her power and used her knowledge to commission the Kidō Corps to create it tangibly using her own Reiryokū as its base. This is the reason it becomes enveloped in flames and appears as a Phoenix. With its creation, Kono believed the Seireitei would be able to deal with anything that would further serve to endanger the Soul Society as a whole. She was poorly mistaken when the Great Ash War began.
A whole new type of entity, the Time Rogues attacked the Seireitei, headed by none other than her former captain. After much fighting the former Captain-Commander sacrificed himself to cease the fighting. The Gotei 13 and the Seireitei, as well as much of the Rukongai, was in shambles. As they were rebuilt anew, Kokoro no Tennyō replaced the Captain-Commander and Kono was approached by the Royal Guard. The Soul King wanted her for her leadership, sense of justice, creation of the Sōkyoku, and immense power that she held. She joined them on the agreement that should anything like the Great Ash War occur again, she would head the assault on behalf of the Soul King. She would burn the Time Rogues into dust.
And thus she joined the Royal Guard and watched over the Gotei 13 in all her jubilent splendor. In the time that she spent as a Royal Guard - around 250 years- she mastered a technique to seal her Reiyokū and Reiatsu by using it to reduce her appearance age as well as began to lighten up profoundly, going back to her roots as a carefree little girl. This was only the massive facade she held for the time that she bid for the coming of the Time Rogues once again.

Atsuiheki [暑い劈, Warm Burst]: Atsuiheki, in its sealed state is a slender, 17.25 inch long tanto. The blade itself is 11.25 inches long and has a very definitive hada and hamon, or grain and tempered line. The tsuka is 4.5 inches long and wrapped in an incredibly fine ray skin. The handle has no ito around the same wrapping but does, however, have two menuki. One is a small gold piece, akin to a pair of flippers, at the connecting line between the tsuka and kashira on either side. The second is a strange, enigmatic design of brown and gold just below the fuchi; this too is on either side. The tsuba is incredibly small and is followed by a gold habaki. The saya is a dark black, non-lacquered, with a brown sageo. It is a very beautiful blade to look at. Kono positions it on the small of her back, held in place by a pair of loops sewn into her Haori.
Sealed Abilities:
Hōsha [放射, Radiation] Even while sealed, Atsuiheki produces some power. Kono is constantly emitting radiative heat and UV rays much like the sun, but at a much lesser rate. Because of this, she is normally very warm and simply standing near her can cause others to warm as well.
Atsuiheki is a young spirit, at least in appearance terms. The spirit has told Kono that he is well over a few centuries in age, but his body does not age. His appearance is of a young man, somewhere around 22 to 24, with mid-length brown hair. His body is quite well toned, having a nice muscle mass and appearance to it, and is around 6' 4", dwarfing the tiny Kono. The man has a few peculiarities however, which include: a deep red 'mask' that wraps around his eyes naturally, a large golden tattoo on his left chest, just below his arm, a pair of round, curved ears akin to a monkey in someways, the last is the most spectacular, his eyes. His eyes are like a cat's, having a convex pupil, but his entire iris is an assortment of colors, much like a rainbow. He also has a 3 foot tail that slips through a small hole in his shorts. Atsui's clothes consist of a crimson pair of baggy shorts that stop just below the knee, with a small red and gold vest that lie under a golden colored robe tied with a creamy obi. Atsui prefers bare feet to wearing shoes, and is rarely seen with them on at all. He has a few accessories, such as a golden medallion, and carries a transmorphic weapon that normally assumes the shape of Bo Staff that is only about 3 to 4 feet long. The two ends are covered in a gold design and the middle of the staff is tied with long red ribbon. This ribbon is present in every form of the weapon as well.
He carries a monkey mask which stems from what he has called a human legend. He has told Kono of the Epic of Sun Wukong, a monkey born of stone that gains celestial powers through Taoist practices. Atsui has said that his odd powers, such as shapeshifting, and his physical appearance puts him quite close to matching the said character, and thus he carries a monkey themed mask.
The spirit world of Atsuiheki is a round slab of marble granite that is around 200 feet in diameter and around 100 feet thick. This sits atop a mountain peak, the peak no longer there of course, and has one incredible elm tree that has a canopy size that covers nearly 100 feet outward from the center. At the base of the tree, there is no marble granite, instead it having soil. At the edges of this round slab is a large drop off into a cloud muddled ground. One can fall endlessly for hours if they fell. When combating, however, the fall somehow warps you to above so you drop from the sky back to the slab. The peak is above cloud level, leaving no clouds to block the sun from passing over head, which can be replaced by moonlight as well. A small fact that Kono found is that the Elm tree produces different fruit not natural to it, such as peaches and other fruits, depending on her mood.

Atsuiheki is released through the command phrase "Hibiku to Moetsuku" [響くと燃え付く, Resonate and Ignite]. Upon release, a large burst of intense heat, around 300 degrees Fahrenheit, bellows outward from Kono's position; much like heat from on oven flows out when opened. This heat is able to instantly evaporate water particles around her, causing steam to from from the release. Her blade stays in its original form, however her body becomes cloaked in a redish aura, a different color to her actual reiatsu. This aura is an intense heat cloak that has a heat of around 250 degree's Fahrenheit, something Kono herself is immune too. Minor grazing of the cloak results in minor burns, but prolonged exposure can turn things to ash. This form Kono gains Heliokinesis, in which she can control solar energy and becomes immune to any form of fire type damage.
Yaoke no Uchigane [夜明けの打ち金, Hammer of Dawn] A close range, reflexive attack Kono gathers solar energy in the palm of her hand, or the bottom of her foot, before causing the energy to collapse on its self. The resulting effect is a concussive force, that is powerful enough to shatter stone and building at point blank range, that can throw back and mildly burn an opponent. More energy gathered and/or more reiryoku used, results in a larger blast and increased power.
Shivua no Shūen [シヴァの終焉, Shiva's Demise] Using her hand as an exit point, Kono summons forth a small orb of concentrated solar energy, able to change the color at will, that then fires in an amassed beam around 6 feet in diameter. Its reach is about 25 feet in front of her before the rays dissipate into the atmosphere. The force behind it is enough to lift her frame up into the sky if needed, making it somewhat evasive as well as offensive in capability.
Ifurīto no Te [イフリートの手, Hand of Ifrit] A support-type/defensive-type move, Kono can absorb any flames or heat [as in energy] directed at her or from the environment. This is, however, useless when used upon her own flames. Has three arch-types:
Ifurīto no Onkei [イフリートの恩恵, Ifrit's Favor] Using the energy absorbed, this technique allows Kono to supplement it to replenish reiryoku levels or use it to boost the power, in proportion with how much was absorbed, of another of her techniques.
Ni-jū Ponchi [二重ポンチ, Double Punch] The initial reflex of Ifurīto no Te, Ni-jū Ponchi returns the absorbed attack back at the opponent at a swifter speed than it was sent out but having the same power.
Jigoku Hōkō [地獄咆哮, Inferno Howl] The secondary and more powerful reflex of Ifurīto no Te, Jigoku Hōkō takes what was absorbed and merges in Kono's own reiryoku, increasing its power proportionally, before its release back upon the enemy.
Kokuten [黒点, Sunspot] A supportive type, reflexive attack Kokuten causes Kono's dermal and epidermal layers to become non-reflective black as well as causes her hair to become jet black. Her eyes and mouth become a hot white color and her body and hair emit Kriby Dots that come from her negative form. This form serves two purposes: one is to supplement Kono's physical ability by utilizing her second function, the absorption of UV and solar rays. Other forms of radiation can also be used, as well as the rays reflected off the moon, however these are less potent and do not do very much at all. Her heat cloak remains in this form as well.
Ōdin no Shihyō [オーディンの指標, Odin’s Indicator] Condensing a small beam at the tip(s) of her fingers, Kono produces a powerful solar beam that runs over its targets before causing a delayed explosion of capable force. The beams themselves are only an inch in diameter and travel incredibly quickly to reach their target. They can extend up to 100 feet away, making them a very versatile attack.
Atsuiheki's bankai is released by the incantation phrase "Heki to Arawasu Rikugō" [劈と現す六合 , Break and reveal the cosmos]. Upon activation a large amount of heat is expelled from Kono. The heat is around 600 degrees Fahrenheit and only covers an area about 10 feet around Kono, shooting a pillar of the same heat straight above her. When dispelled, her body holds a luminescence akin to the corona of the sun, which holds an intense 400 degrees Fahrenheit. In Bankai, Kono's heliokinesis increases to much greater lengths. Her tanto completely dissipates into a single gold ring with a ruby stone set. This ring is multifunctional. It allows the ability for solar energy to be controlled through it, manipulated through it, as well as being completely indestructible by force and being a stock for more energy. Kono can hold her bankai for a near infinite amount of time.
Chichi no sōzō [父の創造 , Father’s Creation] Chichi no sōzō is a reflexively activated technique that gathers solar energy in the palm of one of Kono's hands. Once a small gumball-sized amount is gathered, it is then converted into pure plasma before more solar energy is added to it, more than increasing its size tenfold. Once the size of a child’s bouncy ball, the entire object becomes super heated plasma which ensues nuclear fission and fusion generating a small 'sun' in the palm of Kono's hand. This orb is then launched at the opponent and caused to implode and super nova, resulting in a large explosion more than capable of leveling buildings with ease. The larger the size of the sun, the more reiryoku it takes to form, the longer it takes to form, the slower it moves, as well as the more powerful it becomes. It is a risky move, as if it is too big the sun can cause friendly damage as well. Its base range is about 300 feet in diameter, which around the same length of a small airline runway
Taiyō-ken [太陽拳, Fist of the Sun] Taiyō-ken, a reflexively activated technique, coats Kono's hands in solar energy, which is then fired off in a manner identical to Bala; by punching at the air. There are two keys things that distinguish Taiyō-ken from Bala, however, that being that the energy blasts are significantly hotter and capable of searing flesh on contact, and can also have their size increased to twice that of a normal Taiyō-ken in exchange for a lag in speed.
Taiyō Mōi [太陽猛威, Solar Fury] A powerfully offensive attack, Taiyō Mōi utilizes the destructive force behind solar wind to render objects to the cellular level. Against objects such as Kidō barriers and other non-living items, the wind produced from the attack, which its self is invisible to the eye aside from a few sparks, completely destroys them, ripping them apart at a cellular level. Against living foes, the ability thrashes their body many times over with a strong universal energy. [It is akin to Senbonzakura in its form of attack] This attack has the side effect to disrupt electronic devices and warp gravitational pulls.
Hakkō no Aibu [白光の愛撫, Caress of the Corona] Hakkō no Aibu is a defensive and offensive type technique. Kono's luminescence completely envelopes her body and turns into an incredibly hot white plasma that covers her entire body from head to toe. Her eyes become a darker red to black color, and her hair show through the plasma as a darker white. With this technique, Kono becomes immune to fire and all forms of heat. Prolonged contact with this form can cause burns of varying degrees and clothes catch fire when they make contact with it. Simple weapons and armor are no match for the plasma when they are grasped and held for longer than 10 seconds.
Ryūki [隆起, Prominence] Ryūki is a counter-reflexive move that acts just as an actual prominence of the sun would. Able to shoot out of any part of Kono's body, Ryūki bursts forth as a loop connected to Kono's body toward an incoming attack, physical or otherwise, to halt it or cause the said attacker to stop his/her attack. The burst from her body reaches temperatures up to 6,000 Kelvin [10,340.33 Fahrenheit].
Kakushi Ryū no Katachi [隠し龍の形, Form of the Hidden Dragon] A technique using the plasmitic-coronal coat around Kono's body, Kakushi Ryū no Katachi concentrates a large amount of solar energy around one of Kono's fists. Upon generation, Kono then rushes her opponent and throws her fist at what ever range she so wants to throw it at, at which point the energy leaves her fist in a long stream in the shape of a dragon that has the capability to tear a hole through a body at point blank distance, even more so if the punch touches an opponent's body. From a distance, however, it can burn an opponent's body or attempt to ensnare the target for the maximum capability of burning.

Master of High-Speed Combat Being that her goal was to be apart of the 2nd Division, Kono practiced heavily in the arts of agility and hohō. Upon attaining the rank of Captain, she has ranked herself as one of the fastest within the Seireitei, second to only a few captains. Her ability with Shunpo is so adapted that it is nearly instantaneous travel; all while keeping her reflexes extremely keen. She has advanced so far with her Shunpo ability that she is able to create solid bunshin in her wake to fool enemies. She is also quite nimble. All of this has being increased nearly three-fold upon becoming a royal guard.
Hakuda Master Kono has mastered various forms of hand to hand combat, utilizing many maneuvers in her efforts that she learned and created within the Onmitsukidō. She uses her young-bodied limberness to work around the attacks of her opponents and is an excellent acrobat, giving her a topnotch knack for being able to jump and flip. Furthering her skills, when she is in child form, she is incredibly nimble and swift, easily slipping through defenses and into small areas around the opponent that are hard for many to grasp or counter towards. She is more well off in using her fists than her blade, as many of her Shikai attacks utilize her body rather than her blade. She learned within the Academy how to use Zanjutsu, but aside from that, she only has talent with a few other weapons.
Uki-Gumo Sakura Tsuiraku (浮き雲 桜墜落, Floating Cloud, Falling Cherry Blossoms) A simply Hakuda grappling technique, the user grabs the opponents head between the thighs and arches backwards, slidding until their opponent's head is between their shins. The pair are then flipped three times until, at the close of the third flip, the opponents head is slammed into the ground.
Kung Fu: Fènghuáng Zhǎo Shìyàng [功夫: 凤凰爪式样 | Kung Fu: Phoenix Claw Style] A form of Kung Fu procured by Kono herself, it is based off of the mythical creature the Phoenix. Based on agile movements, fluidity, precision, and a small amount of grapples, the style of Kung Fu is extremely effective against a range of opponents. Its stance mimics that of a Phoenix sweeping backwards in flight: both hands are raised to shoulder level with only the index and middle fingers extended - the others laying down, aside from the thumb which is pressed along the side. This hand stance is often interchanged with the Chu-Ka Shoalin style Phoenix-Eye Fist, which implements using the index finger's knuckle to strike vital points much like her own extended fingers. The left hand is positioned, palm down, just in front of the mouth while the right is extended to the front with its palm up. The body is leaned backward some, placing weight on the left leg. With this position, it allows for ample room to redirect attacks and retaliate with extreme precision and accuracy. The hits focus on the two fingers and the palms for a broader amount of force. Having all weight on the left leg, which is positioned farther back - with the right leg extended forward some - allows for flips and dodges to be executed with relative ease, the energy transferring from this base throughout the rest of Kono's body. Likewise, most grapples involve the legs in some way, shape, or form.
Tenrai Chakuchi [天来着地 | Divine Landing] A simple grapple with great capability, Kono counters an attack by deflection or a hold and maneuvers - whether it is below or above - around the opponent. She lassos the opponent around the neck with her thighs and uses her momentum and inherent strength to bring them into the ground in various ways.
Ōtori Jōshō [凰上昇 | Phoenix Rising] A reflexive counter. Kono bats aside an on coming attack with her right hand, pushing it down to bring the opponent with it - via a light hold on the wrist. The next is a string of combos; Kono leads with a right elbow into the torso of the opponent, followed by a left uppercut into the opponent's armpit, then an open palmed push into the opponents head - just below the chin - by the right hand again. It is finished by a left-legged high kick which can be followed by a Tenrai Chakuchi by bringing her right leg as her body carries upward.
Takuboku ga Tsuiraku Ki [啄木が墜落木 | Woodpecker's Falling Tree] An offensive attack. Kono rushes toward the opponent before dropping to the ground into a slide on her backside. Sliding between the opponents legs, Kono throws her elbows into their knees, aiming to make them buckle and fall. As they fall forward and their weight falls backward, Kono lifts her legs, grabbing the sides of their head in between her feet, pulling them - and ultimately throwing them - into the ground headfirst.
Kuchibashi Mushiro Nezumi [嘴毟る鼠 | Beak Plucks Mouse] A disarming attack. Kono keeps her stance while the opponent approaches, rushes, or races toward her with a weapon drawn. Using the momentum that the opponent has from their attack, Kono aims to disarm them. Using her leading arm, Kono uses her index knuckle to hit just within the wrist, striking tendons that would lead to cause disarmament. Following it up, for added measure, however, Kono uses the same knuckle on her lagging arm to hit the pressure point just within the armpit.
Zanjutsu Expert Kono gained a small bit of training for her Tanto within the Academy, however once gaining Shikai she focused upon utilizing its powers as well as Hakuda, which is utilized more with her power-type. Though not as skilled as some other captains with a blade, she is still well seasoned and can handle herself with Atsuiheki.
Massive Endurance Being the head of the Onmitsukidō has placed Kono into many trials and tribulations. She has become quite durable to extensive physical damage and is immune to most common poisons as a precaution in espionage missions. Becoming even more powerful once becoming a Royal Guard, her endurance was raised to great heights.
Massive Reserves of Reiryoku w/Advanced Control Kono is blessed with a great amount of Reiryoku within her. It is a deep Regelia color with strings of Golden Yellow and manifests itself as a large phoenix when released. She has been through thorough training to keep her reserves under control by the Onmitsukidō; so as to keep anyone from detecting her.
Keen Analyst & Strategist Kono enjoys to observe her opponents while engaging them at the head of a battle. Her linear mind allows her to gather her information and logically align them to possible outcomes of an opponents powers easily. Kono also is quick witted and finds it much easier than many to take in a situation at its worth and deduce an appropriate response. She has often used her innocent look to deceive opponents as well.
Expert Kidō Ability Though Kono trained to use some basic Kidō while in the Shinōreijutsuin, upon becoming a captain, she neglected to keep the skill and can barely remember any Kidō by heart. Upon becoming a Royal Guard, and befriending Anya, she was berated by Anya for her lack of retention. Anya took it upon herself to whip the girl into shape and now has the retention of virtually all Hadō and Bakudō. Anya has also demonstrated her ability to create new Kidō , by using a few that she has created, though Kono has yet to try her hand at such an advanced prospect.

Nendō [念動, Telekinesis] In her human life, Kono was a gifted telekinetic, and though she is not as powerful now that her soul is the only thing existing within the Spiritual Realms, she still retains some of the gift. Kono Taiyō literally translates to "nine suns" which is reflected through her zanpakutō. Her nickname Koko-tai is a play on words from her name. Koko is a repetition of the word that means small and Tai is a play off her last name, which can also mean body. It is all in reference to her small frame and knack for staying in her child form.
