Zaramama'Drogo or Zara as most around the pride called her paced. She was nervous, her mother had asked her to come so that they could chat privately, she chewed her lip and glanced at the opening of the den.
She couldnt think of what she might have done, perhaps she was bothering Umeme to much while she was supposed to be working, she sighed with a gentle smile. She couldnt help it, she felt happiest when with that stubborn lioness!
Her tail twitched as she continued to pace, racking her brain for anything she might have done to warrant such a private scolding. She was a grown lioness now, but still her mothers, both of them opinions of her meant a great deal to her, she loved them both so much, she loved this pride more than anything in the world, well...Umeme came in at number one but the pride was a close..third to her family of course!

Things recently had been... well, peaceful and with the peace came growth and prosperity, but also a dulling of the senses and instincts that had allowed the pride to survive as it had. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing... but at some point, it came time for those who stood for so long to stand aside and let another, younger creature to take their places. Times changed, Hippolyta knew she had to change with it.
It had been a combination of things that had brought Hippy to call her daughter to her today, a lot of secretive (and no so secretive) meetings and discussions that all led to this. Hearing the rattle of pebbles outside of the den, the dark lioness rose and paced out to join her daughter, a warm smile spreading on her face. This was truly a child of her blood... She had her mothers dark looks, but flavored by her father's touch and with just a hint of her grandmother. She was a symbol of the pride's past and future just in the colors of her pelt and it was comforting to the aging Queen to see it.
"Zara." Hippolyta greeted her daughter, a warm smile on her face. "I'm glad you're here. Come with me, I think we should talk for a little bit." She said as she turned and made her way up river, following the sloping bank past the dens to where the rock of the cliff grew solid and they could talk alone.

Zara was quick to bow her head lightly to her mother in greeting, but at the smile all her nerves seemed to melt away. "Mama.." She nodded her head and followed after the elder lioness, she glanced around at the pride, checking to see who was where, and who was doing what.
Zara enjoyed her life in the pride, and she liked to keep an eye on the on goings within it, she felt she knew everyone on a personal level, well everyone but her older half sister and that was something she felt she could never fix.
"What is it mother? Is something wrong with the pride?" She asked quietly.

Hippolyta paced comfortably along the beach, every step one she had known her entire life. Unlike her mother, she had been born here, grew up here, and though she might have lived in exile, she had returned to her home once more. The daughter beside her had never faced such hardships, but the queen fervently hoped she never would. It had made her a strong queen, but not every queen need be born through blood and strife. Sometimes that very hardship broke a future queen instead of building her up...
"As you know, your older sister is missing, and has been for a while now..." She said, finding it hard to speak of it without anger rising inside of her. Still, this was the place to start and she had to look past her own feelings. "Our fight was all too public and I'm sure half the pride saw it, or nearly. I've come to realize that she will never be truly the queen I wished her to be... I hope she finds her own path to walk and whatever happens, for Calypso to be happy."
It was every mother's wish for their children to be happy, but sometimes being separated from that child was best for everyone...
"I've spoken with Ariadne, but she has no wish to be the heir. This is to remain between you and me, but she is ashamed of her infertility and doesn't feel a female who can't have cubs is fit to rule a pride like ours. So much of being a queen is leading by example... to not have children to follow her was too much of a burden..."
It was a sad fact of life for one who had hybrid blood... Hippolyta loved her as much as the rest of her cubs, but understood her feelings on the matter.

Zara listened to her mother closely, she knew that her mother felt a deep pain for her oldest daughter, and Zara felt a touch ashamed she never tried harder with her older sister, they were blood and family was indeed very important to Zara and in the end Calypso was her sister.
The next words made her ears flattened slightly, "Oh no, poor Ariadne, there are other ways for her to have cubs, her mate could bare them.." Her heart broke for her sister, in Zara's eyes there was no difference between the pair. She sighed sadly, her sisters pains broke her heart, here she was happy, in the starting stages of love and her sisters were hurting so deeply.
"What can I do mother? What can I do to help?" She nodded her head.

"I told Ariadne much the same thing, that she would have children through her consort, but she still felt that someone who was flawed should not be a queen. In part she is right, but I've never felt infertility to be a flaw... and if anything, her many virtues outweigh it. I won't force the issue though, which leaves me with a touch choice as I must decide between my daughters who the next heir should be..."
Hippolyta's red eyes traveled to her daughter as she smiled gently, stopping now that they were far enough away from the pridal dens that they could talk privately. Settling back on her haunches, she faced her daughter with a solemn look.
"This brings me to why I've called you here, Zara. I've been talking it over with your mother and other elders that I trust and have come to a decision. What I have decided is to offer you the honor of being heir to the pride." There was a motherly smile on Hippy's face, but still a sternness to the way she held herself. "Before you answer though, I need you to think about this very carefully and truly consider everything that it entails. I have decided that I am going to step down as queen and give over rulership to my heir. This is why I have been searching for a new one since Calypso left. This means you will be queen far sooner than any would have expected. I will, of course, be here to guide you as you learn the role. A benefit to passing on rulership before my death." She said with a chuckle, waving a paw to ward away that possibility.
"This decision was not made lightly and I truly believe that it is time the pride had someone fresh to lead them towards a bright future. I also believe that you have that potential inside of you, if you are brave enough to bring it to light. It will not be easy, learning everything, and I may be more harsh on you after this point, if only because you have so much to learn in such a short time. Even after training is done, being queen is a heavy burden to bear, but also a great joy, like what a mother feels as they guide their cubs to adulthood. You share the failures and triumphs of the pride, their joys and sorrows. You have to be firm when justice is called for and strong when they depend on you to lead them..."
It was a long speech to give, but the black queen had to be sure that her daughter truly understood what she was agreeing to, if she took on this responsibility. It was not a game and it wouldn't be easy.
"If you think you can accept all of this and vow to be a strong ruler... then I want you to be Queen of the Amazons."
