A large topiary stood at the entrance of the Gambino Zoo. It amused Wasa to think that the moment she finally felt ready to consider what soul was destined for the jar tucked into the picnic sack on her back, she was greeted with such clear reminder of her time in the maze. The massive letter 'G' ringed by gilded statuettes of Gaian fauna lacked the grace of Dr Kyou's creations but it was impressive none the less.

The artist was dressed head to toe in khaki tones, from a long tailed frock coat to a layered linen skirt. A cream colored scarf went over her wide straw hat and tied under her chin. She looked ready for a safari, provided that the safari was taking place inside a Steampunk symposium. She adjusted the golden scarab brooch on her lapel and scanned the sidewalks leading up to the ticket gate, hoping to see her companion approach.

Pasha made her way up the side walk slowly, stuck behind a quacking mother pushing a double wide stroller and a beleaguered father holding a massive cotton candy. She floated higher for a moment when she spotted Wasa at the gates, waving enthusiastically. By the time she reached the artist, both kids in the stroller were crying, and the crowd naturally parted to give the racket some distance.

"Wasa!" Melisande threw her arms around the woman's waist and hugged her, careful to avoid the hat. "You look so cute!!"

The Muse had dressed up as well. A halter giraffe print maxi dress complemented her slight build, and she had worked her pale hair up into two buns high on the top of her head. She beamed at her old friend, and took one of Wasa's hands gracefully in both of hers. Thick wooden bangles clattered around her slender wrists. "Thank you for inviting me, I've never been to the zoo! What is the occasion?"

"Oh, thank you." She reached up and patted the peak of one of her buns. "And you! So darling." She took both her hands in her own and swung them out and in. "I'm glad you could come. I've been working on a rather... pivotal project and I've been needing a little inspiration." She gave her hands a little squeeze and then turned to walk with her side by side. "And of course that made me think of you, how it's been awhile..." She rolled her shoulder, making the contents of her pack rattle. Truth be told, she had been thinking about Pasha quite a bit.

"Thank you!" Melisande beamed as Wasa swung her hands. She'd always associated the woman with pleasant times. Every time Wasa had been around, Aki had been happy. Someday, Pasha would get up the courage to ask Wasa what had changed.

Hopefully, today would be as fun as those memories. Kyou's lovely Summer party was still fresh, and the Muse was in high spirits. "A pivotal project? That sounds important." Meli's serious face was serious. She let go of only one of the artist's hands and tugged Wasa towards the Zoo entrance. "Tell me all about it! Does it involve bugs?"

Things with Wasa usually involved bugs.

Wasa smiled as they headed towards the ticket booth. "It might. I haven't quite figured it out yet." She paid for both their tickets, not giving the young muse a moment to worry about it. "I'm hoping I might get a better idea in here." She headed towards the turnstile and then stopped, quirking her head to one side before looking down at the fluttering cloth of her skirt that hid everything and nothing. How would it even work? "Erm..."

Pasha grasped the ticket happily, drifting after the woman towards the gates. "A pivotal mystery?" The Muse inquired, and instinctively dipped low enough for her waist to brace against the turnstile. It clicked happily behind the Sigel, who turned in a slow circle once they were inside. Everywhere she looked there was color, signs, people, and plants! "Well, this is an inspiring place!"

A young freckled man offered Meli a map of the Zoo, and she took one, gratefully. "Look! What do you want to see first? The monkeys? Oh, or the birds!" Pasha held the map up for Wasa, the tips of her turquoise tinted nails dimpling the edges of the brochure.

"I... ah..." Wasa leaned in to peer at the map, her lips thinning to line as she pinched them between her teeth. Birds, they could do birds... but then birds had been done. Or giraffes! Or maybe she just thought of that because of Pasha's mottled dress. Her eyes criss-crossed over the brochure, artic fox to tapir, camel to kiwi, and suddenly her pack began to feel very heavy. As she sank in her stance her eyes fell to the entrance of the zoo at the bottom of the map and followed slowly up the right side. "Here," She touched the first pictogram of a copper bellied lemur. "And then..." she traced the pattern of the path as it spiraled inward, just like the half shells tucked away in her pack. "Like that... to the middle." She straightened up and smiled at the sigel. "Lots to see!"

"Perfect! We will see everything, that way! We start over here?" Pasha took Wasa's hand in hers and led her to the left, only to stop abruptly as a freckled young man stepped into their path.

"Smile! I'll take your picture, ladies! It will be waiting for you in this little booth on your way out!" He snapped a picture the moment Melisande smiled uncertainly, wrapping herself close against Wasa's arm. He handed them a claim ticket and grinned before dashing off to the next entering group. "Smile! I'll take your picture with your kids..."

Pasha twisted to watch. The group behind them seemed to know exactly what was coming, and wrangled their kids into a compact gaggle just seconds before the camera snapped. The colorful front gates and gilded statues were visible in the background, dotted with hanging baskets of brightly colored flowers and bunches of floating balloons.

"Is that his job?" The Muse asked, marveling. Ever since she had gotten a job of her own, she had been fascinated with the ways people could make money. Taking pictures all day seemed like a-

She winced as one of the kids abruptly vomited, splattering the lad's shoes. His wide, bright smile never faltered. Pasha looked away hurriedly, and changed her mind. Maybe it wasn't an easy job after all. "Oh, here are the animals!" She gasped, and tugged Wasa along to the first cage fronted exhibit. A short fence and thick bushes kept people from reaching the bars. Ignoring the sign, Melisande floated up over the fence and greenery, suddenly conspicuous.

"What is in here? Where is the animal?"

"I... ah... Sleeping maybe?" She looked behind and to the side of them, searching for dirty looks as she gave her skirt a pinch and a gentle tug. "Step back a bit, maybe we can get a better look?"

She made a quick scan of the ropes and hammocks that laced back and forth through the enclosure. Fruit peels and other refuse dotted cement floor and just as she was about to turn and shrug something joined the pile with a sloppy 'plop.' "Oh! There." She pointed up to the long, velvety tail and tiny black eyes peering out from behind a fold of canvas. "Spider monkey."

Admittedly, she had never been a fan of monkeys. Maybe it was tail envy. There was so much she could do with a tail, but only if most people still didn't have tails. If everyone had tails, then she'd be right back where she started, advantage wise. Regardless, and she tilted her head to get a look at Melisande's backside as she considered, it would be a long time before her Raevan would benefit from a tail.

Melisande glanced down as Wasa tugged at her skirts, and floated back a few inches. Surprisingly, it wasn't earning the Muse any dirty looks, but people were halting in their tracks staring at the woman floating above the bushes. It seemed like Pasha was her own attraction.

"Spider monkey?" The Sigel drew back even further, clasping her hands against her chest. That sounded horrifying! "Where are the cute animals? Like the tiny giraffes and the kitties?"

A small child with a runny nose reached up to Melisande's skirts and tugged them absently. "Gwafes are big."

Wasa paused in the midst in picking Melisande's snagged skirt off the hedge. Long necked Frei... That made her shudder a bit. "I think they make tiny giraffes, but you can only buy those. Kittens are found in cardboard boxes, I think." The spider monkey climbed out of its nest and dangled from its too-long arms to continue its sinister peering. Even Wasa was unnerved.

"I think there is a nursery for zoo animals towards the center. Won't that be a nice treat at the end?" She pulled Melisande along, away from the sticky child and the many sets of black beady eyes that were starting to pop up in all dark corners of the enclosure.

The child laughed and snorted his snot back up at Wasa's joke about kittens coming from cardboard boxes. He dropped Melisande's skirts long enough to wipe his nose along the back of his forearm.

Pasha missed the beady eyes entirely, and followed Wasa's urgings farther into the zoo grounds. "A nursery?" Her pale brow knitted in worry, and she held the woman's hand just a little bit tighter. "Is that where sick animals go?" The crowd watched them drift away, and dispersed, murmuring.

"I don't know if I want to see that. I'm having a lovely time, though." The Muse looked a bit wistful, staring down the row of people and cages and clever horticulture as she trailed along behind the artist. She'd never gotten to do something like this with Aki.

"What do you want to see the most? The peacocks? The bats?"

"I don't know, maybe? But mostly it's for all the baby animals" She held her palms at eye level a few inches apart. "You know, tiny ones."

She lead them down the trail, peering around corners and over the heads of other visitors to peek into cages and displays. "A bit of everything. Maybe something I haven't seen before or something I have and forgot about." She looked at the map again and frowned. How did all the other guardians figure this out? "You'll tell me if you have a favorite, right?"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 23, 2013 11:39 am

"Of course! You tell me, too?" Pasha paused to look at the map, tilting her head in the direction of the spiral that Wasa had inscribed. "Tiny babies-" Melisande repeated absently, and tilted her head the other way. "There is a Panda Pavillion! And the Monkey Maze..."

Something tickled at Melisande, that Wasa had said. She peeked up from the map, and glanced at the other woman's face before dropping her gaze again to the paper. "Wasa? Was I ever little? I don't remember being a baby. Were you there? When I was a tiny one?"

Aki had never been willing to discuss the circumstances of Pasha's creation. She felt as though she were breaking some unspoken rule by asking Wasa, but the Muse wanted to know.

Too soon for another maze Wasa thought to herself before Melisande's query pulled her attentions back to the Sigel. "Ah, Well... I don't know. Aki and I weren't ta--" She set her jaw against the rest of it, swallowing it down like bad medicine and then offering a fresh smile. "When I first saw you, you were very much like you are now." She gave the small of her back a soft pat. "A little less around the middle though. I just assumed I missed that part of your life. Though, having spoken with Dr Kyou, I now know..." She trailed off again, this time with a flicker of a wince. "Perhaps there's a place we can sit."

Wasa gave the map a stiff shake to flatten out the creases. "There's an aviary here." She pointed to a path that cut across their planned spiral. "Those usually have benches."
