It was early in summer and the sun had only just come up but still it rose to company. Paolo, the outside-born whistler was out and about. His soft, pale coat reflected the gentle light from the morning sun as he trotted over to his garden. He had traded for seeds of flowers and fruit bearing plants with his earnings. Once they were fully developed they would become gifts for those that chose to employ him over the others. The only trouble with his garden is that he had to tend it himself. He quite liked taking care of his plants but it meant he had to get up earlier so that he would have time to take care of it.

He found the little patch he had set aside easily and set about checking the tiny shoots. "You're all coming along quite nicely." He said to his plants as he gently tested the saturation of the soil. It was still nicely damp. No need to over water them. He smiled then marched around the plot looking for things that shouldn't be there.

Strictly speaking Paolo was no longer Quadrille's responsibility. Once he had made the decision to join the whistle stallions he was mostly left in the capable claws of Quadrille's other Sisters. That didn't stop her from making the trek, whenever possible, to check in on him. It was hard not to feel the urge to make sure he wasn't dead. She suspected any of her Sisters would do the exact same thing if they had found a creature in the state that Paolo had been when Quadrille stumbled upon him. He had been half dead with his tack and flesh shredded in equal parts.

It didn't take her long to make her way to what she had begun calling the Whistler's Pavilion. It took her even less time to spot the pale stallion picking things out of a dirt patch using his claws to sift through the earth and pull whatever was amiss back with him. He looked well. His hair was neat as she had come to expect from all the whistle stallions and his coat was clean. The patches of hair that had been torn through seemed to be growing back nicely. The only thing that looked a bit out of order was his saddle and tack that was still torn. It was the same one she had found him in and she was beginning to wonder if he had some special attachment to it that prevented him from discarding it in favor for more orderly drapings.

She shook her head as she wandered towards the stallion, she wasn't a customer. She didn't need to whistle or have payment. "Paolo, what are you doing playing in the dirt?"

Paolo's ears twitched at the sound of Quadrille's voice but he had long stopped jumping at the sudden sounds that pierced the silence around here. It had been alarming, during his first few weeks, at all the sudden noises, mostly whistles, that would come through. The mares calling for one stallion or another. It was something that Paolo had gotten used to eventually, which was good because he was almost certain that his skittish behavior at the start had cost him a few clients.

"I'm weeding my garden." He replied calmly shaking a weed out of his claws and onto the ground before turning his head to look at Quadrille. His life had literally been saved by her. This just went to prove that all those romantic stories he had heard were complete rubbish because she had no interest in him outside of making sure that he was in good condition and remained loyal to the mares of the flock. "If you leave the weeds in they'll starve the plants you want to keep...and if you wait too long they're hard to remove."

"Weeding?" Quadrille wrinkled her nose slightly as she moved closer to get a better look at what he was doing. Sure enough there was a small pile of plant matter sitting by his claws. She had never heard of such a thing before, but she had no interest in tending plants. She was a hunter not a harvester. Her job was to track down prey and kill it for the flock no fuss over flowers. This did raise a few questions as Paolo's job also had nothing to do with tending to flowers.

"Paolo...why do you have a garden?" Was there some point to it that she was missing?

Paolo nodded his head politely not noticing the way her face crinkled but unable to miss the tone in Quadrille's voice. It wasn't the first time he had been looked down upon for his unusual hobby nor would it be the last. Still, Quadrille was a sister of the Flock (not to mention his savior) and it was not his place to argue with her nor would it ever be.

"The flowers and fruits my garden will produce will make excellent gifts for the patrons of our craft." Paolo said without even the slightest hint of sarcasm or bitterness. He enjoyed what he did as a hobby and as a job. It was useful and nothing to feel ashamed of. The patrons were often good to him and his fellows. "It is also very calming, miss Quadrille. It may not suit your tastes but I would recommend trying it at least once, just to see."

So there had been some point in it. It was bribery to get him more clients. That made sense. If a Whistle Stallion could get enough clients that often lead to special perks like better quarters and more and better trinkets to decorate themselves with. They way Quadrille saw it they were often a rather vein bunch. While Quadrille couldn't claim to be completely practical, not with all the ornaments she wore, at least she was more practical than others.

Perhaps this nature of hers was why she was able to appreciate Paolo's gardening more now that she knew its purpose. It did not, however, make her consider taking up Paolo's offer. "I'm a hunter. I can find my own calm in the wild and lose stress in the thrill of the chase. I don't need plants."

Well that had gone well. Paolo kept his comments to himself, he was simply thankful that Quadrille had not decided it was fit to directly insult his offer. Actually he was almost certain that she wasn’t trying to be insulting at all. It sounded more like she thought he had insulted her. Paolo turned away from his garden to look at the peachy colored mare. Her white mane and feathers were as clean as his coat and brighter in many ways. She would have been very popular outside of the Flock if not for those red, red eyes. Those rather intimidating red, red eyes. Those eyes that were looking at his garden like they wanted to destroy it.

Paolo swallowed. He was almost entirely certain that Quadrille had no such intentions and that it was entirely his imagination but he still thought it might be better to get her away from his little patch of hopes and goals. "Miss Quadrille, might I ask what brought you out here today? It couldn't be my little dirt patch." Silently he said an apology to his garden, it hadn't deserved to be called that.

Quadrille had, in fact, been looking at his patch of sprouts but not out of any desire to damage them. Really she was just wondering what exactly was growing there, if it was for eating, and if she could come and get some when it was blooming without needing to contract Paolo. She had no intention of hiring any whistle stallion ever and especially not Paolo. When he spoke her name Quadrille snapped out of her wondering and looked to him.

The question he asked was simple enough and had a very straight forward answer. She had no reason to refuse answering, even though it wasn’t really his business, so she went ahead, “I came to make sure you weren’t dead yet before going to hunt or train. Thankfully, you’re fine.”
