Hari was getting older and bigger: his mane was growing longer; his legs gaining muscle; his senses becoming sharper by the day. Most telling was his mother making arrangements for he and his siblings to start their hunting lessons. He was looking forward to it, if only for the freedom of stepping paw over the borders without an adult reprimanding you and carrying you back.

Not that anyone could carry him at this point, leaning more toward a proud adolescent than a haughty juvenile.

It was one of the few instances Hari could remember watching the light of day come and go without seeing his brother. What Yue was up to... Who knew? Causing trouble somewhere, no doubt.

As the evening dimmed the sun and mothers were calling their cubs home, Hari was still out in the lush grass giving chase to a grasshopper destined to be a casualty of his hunting practice. He'd be damned if he struck out on his first real hunt unprepared.

Eris' paws silently covered ground as she moved, enjoying the sunset. It was a fine evening and the proud blue lioness was looking forward to the hunt tomorrow she would have. Ate was somewhere on pridal land, and her prey tomorrow would be picking off a zebra herd. Eris quite fancied herself a fine huntress, and at the sound of movement, she grinned, dropping to stalk the source. Perhaps it was prey?

She crept slowly, and listened. It had to be something.

          All was still.

          All was quiet.

Suddenly, Hari burst forth from the grass. He moved in leaps and bounds, crossing the distance between here and there to ambush the condemned insect.

The victim was never aware of its peril before --

          Crunch!

Hari ambled back, leaving on the stone a pile of crushed grasshopper innards. Had he known there was an audience, he'd have looked less smug with his mock hunt. As it were, he stuck his nose up and flicked his tail. Hunting was easy.

It ran, and Eris moved after, preparing to pounce when-- oh.

Lion--OH! She remembered him. Eris calmed, rising smoothly and approached.

"Hello again."

Being raised in the Pridelands, Hari developed a sort of sixth sense that left him hard to startle. He should have known someone was nearby since someone was always, always nearby. You could barely find room to breathe in this pride most days!

He turned to her. Out of the pair of words she'd used to greet him, the second garnered more attention than the first.

          Again?

For a moment, Hari was incapable of discerning this lioness from any of the others. His encounter with her hadn't really been anything significant to him in the long run, mostly the whim of a youngster who wanted to join in grousing about something. But he recognized her now.

"Oh, hey." There was no reason to be short with her, so he wasn't. Hari spoke conversationally. "What are you doing out here?"

Eris saw no reason to be short with the younger males-- she liked him. He was interesting, and so she remained non-hostile for a change.

"Hunting." She nodded. "There's zebra nearby. I plan to take one down tomorrow. And you?"

Time would tell if Hari would inherit his mother's hunting prowess. He'd have never known hunger even if they'd been born out in the roguelands. She made it look so easy: they whined for food and, suddenly, there it was.

How much effort must be expended to successfully pin, kill, and drag a zebra was lost on him, oh he of little personal experience. Thus Hari was unimpressed.

"Just pouncing." He took a good, long look at her now, none too subtle about it. "What's your name, anyway?"
