Lemure of Love Lost was wandering around the park. Alone. Though not by choice. If she had her way, she'd be sharing the walk with a handsome someone. Maybe more than one handsome someone. A harem of handsomeness. A lot of the characters in the books she read had multiple boyfriends, so why shouldn't she? She would be the ghostly damsel who collected vampires, werewolves, wizards, and whatnot for her supernatural arm candy.

She thought about finding a bench so she could sit and read for a bit, but the walk was peaceful. Lemure was enjoying daydreaming about all the imaginary companions she would like to have.

Ikebana walked slowly through the park, happy for a little time to himself. The weather was nice and the breeze floating through the park was nicer, and he decided that this was just what he needed -- a little time to relax, center, and find things in nature from which to gather inspiration.

It was only as the champagne stallion was walking under the swaying branches of a willow tree that he noticed the dreamy-looking filly wandering close by, her expression thoughtful and her eyes far away. He watched her for a moment as he trotted slowly, the long willow branches lending a mysterious and romantic air to his gaze, unbeknownst to him.

The world slowed down and everything moved at a dramatic pace as Lemure laid eyes on the stallion coming her way. His hair billowed majestically, and the willow tree seemed to part on it's own for him, unwilling to touch his glory. Her breath sped up and then caught in her throat, leaving her unable to speak. Perfect. He was perfect. She had never seen anyone like him before, and even better, he was looking right at her.

Lemure nervously tucked loose strands of hair behind her ears. Did she look okay? Was her breath alright? Oh gosh, she didn't have anything stuck in her teeth from lunch, did she? She must have looked really strange doing all this fidgeting. Taking a deep breath, Lemure tried to calm down.

But how could she stay clam when she had just witnessed the love of her life? She could feel her heart pounding it's way out of her chest, and sweat was collecting on her face.

She tried to make her best bedroom eyes at the glowing stranger. "H-hello," Lemure squeaked out a little higher than she wanted to. She cleared her throat and tried to lower the pitch, "Hello."

Ikebana did not notice the filly's discomfort -- at least, not initially. What he did notice, and which held his eye for a long moment, was the translucent quality of her legs. His bright eyes lingered on them as she moved in her languid pace. Was he seeing things? He could see the movement of one leg through another! What on earth...? What a strange, ghostly quality it lent her. He had never seen anything like that, not once.

From the outside, it seemed as though Ikebana was struck by the appearance of the young foal. Inwardly, his mind was simply trying to unravel the machinations by which this translucency was achieved.

Oh! But she was talking to him. Ikebana started from his reverie, immediately apologetic for having stared too long. She seemed a bit discombobulated, but why shouldn't she be? A big draft pony like himself staring...

It was best to be polite and try to make amends.

"Oh, good afternoon," said Ikebana in his rich, low voice. He offered the young one a faint smile. "How do you do, little lady? Forgive my intrusion, was I blocking your path?"

Lemure stared back at the dashing stallion. She could see a deep ocean of love in his eyes. It seemed as if he were taking his time and soaking in every detail of her. He must be really impressed! Lemure could have melted on the spot.

"No sir, you weren't blocking my path," she paused, the next thing she wanted to say was, 'I was dreaming of someone just like you before you walked down that path and into my heart,' but she thought it might be a bit too much before she even knew the name of her forever love. They were destined to be together, so Lemure knew she couldn't scare him away, but she didn't want to rush things.

Secretly, she wished there were some danger that he could save her from, because that was the best way to get a boyfriend. Just stand in front of a car, and wait for him to jump out in front of it and crush it with his hands. Then you can fall into his dreamy arms.

She realized that the silence was spreading while her mind was wandering. "I'm Lemure of Love Lost, but you can just call me Lemure because I think I've found my love."

The filly spoke, and Ikebana inclined his head politely as he listened. She was looking at him very strangely, with an expression that made Ikebana feel positively meat-headed not to understand. Was it disgust? Did she simply have something in her eye? He leaned forward slightly, nodding to show he was attending to her words. At least he wasn't in her way.

But then -- what?

She didn't mean -- wait, what?

The big stallion's expression cleared into a faint, friendly smile. He must have misunderstood. Such a pretty little filly, she must have just been asked out by some colt or filly in her grade, that was it. She was just happy to find someone to brag to. Well, wasn't that nice.

"Oh -- congratulations," he said. "And you are so young, Miss Lemure. You know, many are not so lucky to have found their loves so early. I hope he is special enough for you."

He? Did her love speak in third person?

Lemure was confused, but replied in suit, "She is very happy to have found her love so early." The filly read enough books to know that sometimes lovers made each other jump though hoops before running away and living happily ever after. Maybe this champagne stallion was hyper-intelligent and fond of word games.

"She still does not know her love's name."

Well, now Ikebana was far beyond confused. The lovely little ghost-legged filly seemed to talk in ways that, well, no other filly he'd met had. Although, there was something terribly familiar about her, now that he had the chance to think about it...

But that would have to wait for another moment. He was being addressed, and he was flummoxed as to how to respond. Was he meant to ask her more?

"That is a shame, indeed," said the draft "Perhaps I could be of some help? I am Ikebana, Miss Lemure -- and I have to say, I hope you do not find me rude, but you really remind me of ... of someone. Tell me, who might your mother be?" He tilted his head inquiringly, still a gentleman.

Her mother? Weren't guys supposed to ask a girl's father for her hand in marriage? Then again, she had two mothers, so maybe the protocol was a little different.

"I'm the daughter of Taquita and End of an Era. Do you know them? They run the local book store. I'm sure either of them would be happy to give me away to you." Lemure batted her eyelashes and leaned in closer.

For a moment, a look of understanding passed Ikebana's features, and he began to nod in comprehension. Of course, Taquita, that made sense -- they were related via his mother's side! But as the filly continued to speak, Ikebana's expression melted from his face, leaving behind a look of blank, stunned surprise.

Give her away to him?

"Ah--" the stallion managed, clearing his throat. He could not tell if he was amused or terribly embarrassed by the situation. What on earth was he to do? "No, Miss, I -- believe we may have misunderstood one another. Your fair mother Taquita is my half-sister by Scent Puff. You are, I believe, my niece."

He turned slightly and pulled his mane aside, revealing the long white stripes that made their way down his back, as though showing a family crest.

Lemure's jaw hit the floor, and for the first time in her life, she was speechless.

She stared at the stripes hoping that they were just a trick her eyes were playing. If she squinted hard enough, maybe they would go away and the two of them could just run off and live happily ever after.

Needless to say, this was one of the most heartbreaking things to ever happen. Worse yet, she felt like a fool for flirting so much with him. "I.. um... I... um... um..." she stammered, unable to put her thoughts into words.

Then again, it was better that he told her now, than to let things continue. What if she hadn't found out they were related until during the wedding when all the family arrived and were confused on which side to sit on? That would have been even more embarrassing. The truth hurt now, but it would have hurt even more later.

Lemure stared at the ground, suddenly more interested in pushing around a fallen leaf with her hoof. "Thanks for telling me... Uncle. I'm really sorry that I got your hopes up that we would be together forever."

Ikebana shifted his weight as the filly stared at him, her wide eyes filled with embarrassment and a strange sort of horror he was certain only foals could feel. He wanted to comfort her but was unsure of how exactly to go about it, and the entire situation felt both laughable and never-speak-about-it-again embarrassing at once. His mother, for instance, need never know about it. She fell firmly in the latter category.

He hadn't seen his half-sister or her wife, however. He wondered if they would get a laugh out of it.

"Hearts heal faster than one might think," said Ikebana, gently but vaguely, trying to keep Lemure's ego intact. She was a lovely filly, and obviously prone to instantly falling in love, and so he was certain she would find a more willing, less illegal participant in the near future. "But it warms my own heart to know I have such a lovely, assertive, and beautiful niece."

She blushed at the compliment. "And it's wonderful to know that I have such a strong, honest, and upstanding uncle." Her whole family was just a little bit strange, but Ikebana was for sure one of the good ones.

There was a long silence where she would usually give a hug to say goodbye, but she wasn't exactly sure it was appropriate. Instead, Lemure just smiled, "I really should be going now. I won't take up any more of your time." There was another uncomfortable pause. "Bye, and I guess I'll see you at the next family reunion!"
