The pronghorn was at it again. There was just something about these summer days that seemed to drive Gwendolen's familiar crazy. Dita hadn't yet figured out if it was the rising temperatures or the longer day that did it but every day this week Dart had suddenly, true to his name, darted off. The last thing Dita ever wanted to do during the summer heat was go on a mad game of chase trying to stop a fleet-footed not-goat from running rampant. The only thing she could say was at least he had decent timing and seemed to pick moments where neither she nor Gwendolen had anything to occupy them.

"Gwen!" Dita shouted, her white mane and tail fluttering behind her as she galloped after the impish creature. "Gwen he's heading your way!" Whether they were busy or not wasn't the point. They both had other things to do. Gwendolen could be arranging supplies and Dita's mother was expecting again and Dita very much wanted to spend more time with her.

Fletcher and Thatcher found themselves hanging around the outskirts of the human village again. As foals they had spent quite a bit of time at the village when they weren’t getting kidnapped or hunted or ambushed by random enemies of Lorenna and her network. As adults they still seemed to spend a great deal of time here. It came from following Lorenna around. When she had business to attend to in the village, or anywhere else that didn’t require secrecy, the twins would tag along to keep her company and assure her safety. Today her business would take a long time, she had promised them as much, and the brothers were more than happy to hang around outside the village to watch the comings and goings. It was harder to do this now than it had been when they were children as they garnered quite a bit of attention. Thatcher often joked that it was because they were just so pretty, far too pretty to be ignored. Fletcher thought that his brother was actually spot on in his assessment even if Thatcher didn’t think he was. Fletcher had observed, over time, that most of the looks they got came from females, or at least the long looks. Even when they were foals they got quick double-takes just because there were two and folk assumed they were seeing things.

“I wonder how much that guy had to eat to get his stomach like that.” Thatcher was saying as he idly observed a dappled grey walking by with bright blue streaks in their mane and tail. Fletcher spared the soquili in question a glance and snorted at his brother. The soquili was definitely round in the belly but not for the reasons Thatcher was thinking.

“Thatcher...that’s a mare and she’s not fat, she’s pregnant.” Fletcher watched with great amusement as his brother’s eyes boggled. For a few moments Thatcher made sounds like he had sprung a leak before diverting his attention elsewhere. He found a speckled and striped mare chasing after what looked to him like a small deer with unusually large ears.

“You don’t think that’s one of us, do you, Fletcher?” Thatcher prompted narrowing his eyes at the little tan thing. It could be a cerynei, possibly, if he squinted just right.

Fletcher shook his head. “It looks too small...” He said then paused.

”Ummm...should we move?” The creature had just taken a turn towards them.

Gwendolen was exasperated. She loved Dart with all of her heart. He had come to her during one of the darkest moments in her entire life and helped her back into the light. He had done that by causing havoc similar to what he was doing now. "Dart! Stop! It's too hot for this!" Gwendolen shouted getting into position to intercept the pronghorn. She failed to notice a few things as she got in front of her familiar's path. The first two things were directly behind her and had also failed to notice her until now. The third thing was that Dart was getting ready to ram her.

All of these things suddenly mattered when Dart hit her full force and sent her toppling back into the pair of soquili directly behind her. She landed on her side with the distinct feeling that she needed to find a better method to catch the pronghorn. She looked up to see what she had collided with on her way to the ground, and to apologize, but what she saw alarmed her too much to speak. "Dita, Dita I think Dart may have hit me a bit too hard this time." She said blinking her eyes rapidly. "I'm seeing double."

Dita saw the cerynei stallions before Gwendolen did but only because her focus was no longer on the pronghorn. She assumed Gwen could get him like she always did. She assumed wrong. Dita watched as Dart headbutted his friend, mercifully not spiking her with his horns, and took off again leaving Gwendolen to topple back into the stallions behind her. They seemed just as surprised by the events as everyone else was.

Dita hurried over to the cluster of soquili to check on her friend to find her babbling about seeing double. Dita shook her head. "No Gwen, I see them too. They're uh...twins?" She thought that was the term. Dita hadn't met any twins but she knew a few mares who had them. "Are...you two okay?" Somehow this always happened when chasing Dart. Others got dragged into it against their will.

Fletcher took most of the blow as the winged mare fell into their midst. Thatcher had had the sense, or at least the instinct, to step away. Thankfully she was a small mare and she didn’t crush him. She didn’t seem to be injured herself though he smirked when she mentioned seeing double. Fletcher could practically hear the grin that had spread over his brother’s face. As the second mare approached both brothers were surprised to see that she was even smaller that the brown one. Neither Fletcher nor Thatcher was particularly large. There were many mares that dwarfed them but these two made them look tall or at least average in size.

“We’re fine.” Thatcher supplied as he stepped forward grinning from ear to ear.

“Are you, though?” Fletcher questioned looking down at the mare on the ground. “It looks like that little one gave you quite the blow.”

Thatcher bobbed his head up and down in enthusiastic agreement with his brother. “That’s right! He did! What’s his problem with you two? Did he take something from you?” Fletcher nodded his head slowly in consideration. His brother raised a couple very good points.

Gwendolen had to admit she was equally relieved to hear that there really were two of them and that they were okay. She smiled as she got back onto her feet and nodded politely to the twins that she could have injured. "I'm alright, thank you." She said looking them both over more carefully. If not for their expressions and crowns they would have looked exactly they same. They even sounded alike. Though with those similar faces they seemed to have decided that Dart was a bad creature and she couldn't have that.

"Oh no, no. Dart's my friend he just gets a little rambunctious from time to time. We're trying to stop him before he hurts somebody by accident." She stopped realizing what she had just said. "Well, anyone else I suppose. It's hard though."

Dita shook her head slightly. The stallion that said they were fine was notably not the one that had been hit. The one that had taken the blow didn't seem to disagree with his brother's assessment, however, so Dita let it go. Mostly. She'd keep an eye on them just in case they started showing signs of pain. Gwendolen had taught her what to watch for so that Dita would know if a medic was needed at any time. It was a useful skill to know.

"Gwen, if you're all alright then...maybe we should focus on getting Dart back under control." Dita's pale eyes wander out over the plain where she could see the pronghorn pronking in the distance. She was doubtful that they would ever catch him where he was now but they still had to try. "We really are sorry for this, but he's a bit too much to handle some days. Come on Gwen."

Gwendolen sighed. She wished that she could have more time to give the stallions a quick check over. They seemed fine but she was a healer and it was in her nature to check for possible injuries. Dita was right though, if they didn't get moving they'd never catch her friend. One of these days the two legged ones were going to catch her friend and tie him to a post just to stop him from causing chaos. "Alright, let's go try to put a stop to him." She bowed slightly and turned to follow Dita away.

Fletcher and Thatcher exchanged looks. If the name of the game was chase then there were few things fleeter in foot than a cerynei. Thatcher proved this by catching up to the mares in a single bound. "Let us help. I'm sure the four of us can nab him." He said with a wide grin. Fletcher trotted over to join his brother. "It wouldn't be any trouble."

Gwendolen jumped at the sudden appearance of one of the twins beside her. She hadn't been expecting that nor had she been expecting the offer for help. She blinked owlishly a few times before slowly nodding her head. Who was she to act like they couldn't use the help.

Thatcher grinned and Fletcher smiled. "Then here's the plan."

Dart veered sharply away from Gwendolen as she came in close. Her lime green hooves bit into the ground so furiously that she was kicking up small rocks pelting anyone that came in too close behind her. She came around the other side of Dart to get him to turn in the other direction towards the trees. The twins had made this idea sound much simpler than it was actually turning out to be. Dart did not want to move in any predictable fashion but at least he wasn't ramming into soquili now. Though actually tricking him to run into the woods where Fletcher and Thatcher were waiting to trap him "cerynei style" was proving difficult. "Dart please!" She called sounding entirely breathless. "Enough for the day!"

Dita could see that her friend was struggling to get Dart to cooperate. It wasn't surprising, he was built for running through open areas like horses were. The trees would put him at a disadvantage. He must have realized that and was refusing to do anything that they wanted him to. Really they should have thought of this. Dart was no mindless animal. He was a spirit touched as the rest of them. Tricking him was no easy feat. With any luck the cerynei would recognize their struggle and come help out in the open. If the didn't it was going to be a long afternoon.

The twins had been watching the mares’ rather futile effort in herding the pronghorn towards the trees. The plan had been to steer Dart to Fletcher and Thatcher where one of the two would lock horns with him or tackle him to the ground. Thatcher was more of a fan of the tackling idea because it seemed easier than trying to engage the pronghorn. There was no telling if their horns would even match properly. Fletcher was against injuring the creature even if he was a nuisance. The small argument that had occurred as the two bucks tried to decide which plan was the better one seemed hopelessly silly at the moment as the mares couldn’t get the springy fellow anywhere near the trees.

Thatcher sighed and leaned his shoulder against the trunk of a birch tree. He tried to lean his head against a low branch but couldn’t quite reach it. Rather than looking like a fool he shifted so that his reaching motions appeared to be him rubbing his antlers against the bark. Fletcher snorted knowing his brother far too well to miss his blunder. He chose to save Thatcher’s dignity by keeping his mouth shut. Thatcher didn’t have the same plan.

“Do you think we should do something?” Thatcher asked as he finally stilled his head. Identical green eyes watched as Dart veered to the side sharply leaving Dita and Gwendolen scrambling for footing. They winced. They were just sadly outmatched. It was pretty clear that any races they participated in were conducted in straight lines.

“If we don’t they’ll never get anything done.” Fletcher said stretching and shaking out his mane. Thatcher grinned and shifted his weight back to all four of his hooves. Once they were both settled they took off in the quick springing steps that their kind was known for. In no time at all they were halfway to Dart several paces away from the mares.

“If you want to take a break we’ll understand!” Thatcher called to them with a cocky smirk. Fletcher shook his head. “Focus.” He reminded his younger brother. They were trying to catch the creature not show off.

Dart had no intentions of stopping for the day. It was more than obvious to Gwen but that wasn't stopping her from pleading with the little critter. His refusal to listen was bringing her closer and closer to tears though. She couldn't get him to the trees. Even with Dita trying to herd him with her didn't seem to be doing much. They were now side by side with the pronghorn in front of them. There would be no trapping him like this. They could only chase him and hope that he tired out before they did. That was unlikely.

"Dart, don't you want to play in the trees?" She called making a last ditch effort to salvage their plan. The pronghorn just flicked his tail rudely at her. Tears started pricking at Gwendolen's eyes. It was just too much. She had thought that Dart had been a blessing to help her enjoy life but not she was fairly convinced that his entire purpose was to give her grief. She just wanted to do her work and find a new home and she could do neither thing with her familiar running rampant.

Just as she was about to stop to cry movement to the side caught her attention. She turned just as Thatcher called out to her and came to an immediate stop with wide eyes. They had been in the woods some distance away from them. How fast were they moving that they could catch up so easily? Gwendolen opened her mouth to thank them for coming to the rescue but the only thing that came out was a stammered question. "H-how?!"

Dita could not have said it better herself even if she had tried. She had heard of the swiftness that cerynei possessed but she hadn't been expecting them to be quite this quick. The two moved primarily by leaping. They would push off the ground, land several yards away and then do it again. It seemed much faster than what Dita and Gwendolen were capable of but Dita suspected that how tired the mares were played a part in this. She didn't think they'd be fast enough to catch Dart still. True to his name the pronghorn was fast and known for his sudden take offs. You would think you were close and then he would suddenly move faster.

"Gwen, you rest, you look like you're about to break down. Those two will need help." Dita said to her friend before running off to help. She was tired but Dart would run the show offs ragged before they actually managed to trap him.

Gwendolen nodded her head slowly still in a bit of shock and also too tired emotionally to argue with Dita's advice. The mare had never steered her wrong in all their time together. She could be trusted.

Dita tried to catch the pair of stallions but wasn't making any progress so she decided on a different route. She angled away from the path they were on to come around. They needed to trap Dart since they would never catch him normally. "This way!" She called to the twins hoping they would hear her and understand what she meant.

The two passed the girls quickly in pursuit of their springy target. Equally springy themselves they were able to match the pronghorn’s movements easily enough. He’d turn and run to the left or right quite suddenly and they would simply angle their leaps to follow after. His sharp turns allowed the cerynei twins to close the gap but unless Dart made several more they’d likely never catch up, the little bugger was fast.

Fletcher was the first to glance over when a voice on the wind tickled at his ear. He grinned to see Dita there. He had been fairly certain that the two would listen to his little brother and sit the rest of the chase out. They had been running after him all day. It didn’t take Thatcher long to notice after his brother did but he ended up laughing gleefully. It was good to have help.

“Let’s follow her lead.” Fletcher said picking up his pace just a little. Thatcher followed his example and before long the two were gaining on the pronghorn. It wasn’t an easy pace to keep and they both knew they’d only get the one shot but they were confident that it would work. They came to the pronghorn at the side and as expected it turned sharply in the other direction so that it was heading to Dita.

“Get him!” Thatcher shouted a little too enthusiastically before he stumbled over his own hooves.

Dita was quite certain that their plan had worked. Fletcher and Thatcher had caught on quickly. They had driven Dart around just like she had hoped they would. He was seconds away from her and she was preparing herself to tackle him. Dita knew the pronghorn better than Fletcher and Thatcher. Such a blow wouldn't really hurt Dart. He'd be back to normal in a day or two. When he got in range Dita lunged at him with as much strength as she could and got nothing but air.

Dart blazed past her and she stumbled to a stop. Dita whirled around hoping to get a second shot only to discover the pronghorn stopped by Gwendolen looking up at the brown fluttercorn with concern. Dita's mouth hung open for a bit. That was it? No more chasing. Had they succeeded or failed? They had wanted him to stop and he had but only because he had wanted to.

Dita was exasperated. There was no winning with the pronghorn.
