While Raven had been his top priority for a while, he hadn't been able to stay away from the streets for long. Their attempt at normalcy was not much of a strain on him (it was easy to want to avoid the wraiths while they were acting out) though he couldn't pry himself from his Dark Mirror Court duties. His life just seemed to be missing something when he hadn't powered up.

Of course, he hadn't told Raven that. He waited until there was a time that he wouldn’t be missed and slipped out, glad to get some fresh air and enjoy the evening before summer came. He wasn't anticipating the heat—especially in this getup.

Tonight, he was back in the park—a place he had been visiting less and less, it seemed. It was a place, however, that always surprised him. Any large aura always got his attention, so when that of a knight flickered onto his radar. Considering his current dislike towards the wraiths and trying to gather energy with them, paying this knight a little visit was sounding like a great way to start his evening. He had run into only a small number of knights so expected one of only a few faces.

Meandering towards the area, he took shortcuts through the mirrors in the park, popping out very near to the knight. Even in the darkness of the night, he could identify him from this distance. "Valhalla," he beckoned, glad he wasn't greeting the male with his fist this time. "What are you doing out so late, don't you have a girlfriend back home to tend to or something?"

It had been almost two full weeks since Valhalla had been out and about on his own, and for good reason. No more than a handful of days ago, he’d been confined to the house by his very worried better-half. A week ago he’d been confined to bed, trying to regain the energy that had left him weak and vulnerable.

But tonight he was out on patrol again, hoping Paris would understand his restlessness and desire to make sure the city was okay... and maybe forgive him. He had no intention of getting into a fight, or even close enough to someone to repeat the events at the carnival, so when the aura of a DMS grew closer and closer, he couldn’t help but be somewhat nervous.

At least until he realized it was Remarque, whom he greeted with a sigh of relief and small laugh at his own nervousness. “Keeping the peace,” he joked softly, before letting out a small laugh at Remarque’s presumption. “Married, actually.”

He knew he shouldn’t be so familiar with someone of Chaos, but there had been many times in the past that Remarque could have hurt or even killed him, and yet...

“How have you been?” His smile was fond, but his stance was still cautious. He’d promised to be careful, and even though he trusted Remarque, he didn’t know if there were any of his mirrors hiding close by for someone else to appear...

The response Valhalla provided was not something Remarque had been expecting; he stared for a second, trying to deduce if Valhalla's response had been a joke or if he was serious. "I'm fine. A small bit of trouble here and there, nothing to be too concerned about."

Unless, of course, you counted rogue mirror wraiths as being troublesome, but Remarque was hoping that Valhalla, along with the rest of the White Moon, had yet to notice the devious little bastards. He doubted such a wish would be granted, but he wasn't going to start running his mouth and make the Dark Mirror Court look bad just because they couldn’t control the little pests Ares had bestowed upon them.

It was her own fault for leaving without giving them proper indication on how to control them.

"Married?" he prompted, sounding a bit incredulous. "You? …I never would have guessed. You look too young. Doesn't the whole…"

He gestured towards the Knight's ensemble, "thing get in the way of a proper relationship?"

…Because it sure as hell was ******** with his.

Remarque’s response had Valhalla grinning in amusement, not at all thrown off by his reaction. “That’s because I am young,” he confirmed with a small laugh, not bothered by the senshi’s surprise. “We figured it wasn’t worth the risk of waiting. With people dying every day, we might not get a chance if this thing ends...”

He hoped it would, of course. Not just hoped... but he was making sure to work towards a future where they didn’t have to worry about powering up to defend the city or the world, or whatever...

Valhalla shook his head when asked if the ‘thing’ got in the way, laughing once more, but his smile faded to become more ironic than amused. “I guess it helps that we’re both stuck doing this. Instead of going to the movies, we dust youma.”

There were definitely ways of making it work if they both wanted it to.

"Ah." Remarque nodded, as if he understood.

He still wasn't sure how they balanced it. If Valhalla and his woman palled around while powered up, it certainly wasn't something he'd ever seen. Though, he didn't always make a habit of tracking down obvious teams.

"I suppose that at least keeps the relationship interesting." Making rounds with Lesath would have kept her safe, though he knew he could be a bit suffocating, always worrying for her safety. She did just fine on his own, and while he was always open to the idea of going out with her, given her temperament he wasn't sure she'd appreciate him coddling her.

"If you're both really so afraid of dying, why don't you just…settle down and try to be a normal married couple? Without the fighting, without the war. Or are you two just so caught up in it these days that you just can't let it go?"

…It was the boat he was in.

Logically, it made sense to quit. Focus on work, school, a career. Relationships. To leave for as long as Ares was gone. Let things sort themselves out.

But Remarque wasn't really one who could just do that. He couldn't sit on the side lines and just let things happen—not when he'd invested so much time and effort into this fight.

Valhalla had been doing this for longer than him. He doubted the Knight would be able to give anything up so easily. Clearing his throat, he shifted positions. "You know, don't answer that. If I ask, will you tell me? Who is this, your other half? Have I met them?"

”I wish I could let go,” Valhalla admitted, glancing up at the sky with a sad gleam in his eyes. There wasn’t much to be seen of the stars so close to the city, but there were a couple dots of light here and there. Were they planets? Were there people who once lived on those distant worlds? Was there any hope for things to get better in a war that seemed never ending?

“I’m not afraid of dying,” he corrected, glancing back down to the senshi standing across from him with a small, sad smile, but said nothing else on the topic as per request. There wasn’t any malice in his words, just a gentle turning of the words presented by the other, hoping that if they figured out a way to understand each other a little better, there may be hope for them yet.

There was little hesitation when Valhalla answered with, “Ganymede.” There was a small twist in his stomach knowing that he might have put both himself and Paris in danger, but he wanted so desperately to trust Remarque that he was willing to do almost anything. Regardless, it was just a name and Ganymede could take care of himself.

“I’m sure you’ll know if you’ve met him,” he added, pausing a moment to think about how to describe the Eternal. “Red and black and white… tiny top hat… long legs- train… long train…”

The conversation was a bit deeper than Remarque had fully intended, so he was keen to draw away before things got to be too much. Talking about dying? About no fear of death? How? Remarque couldn't imagine ever being fine with dying.

But then again, there was little he would risk his life for, and even less he thought could kill him.

But he wasn't going to just up and voice that.

Instead, he stroked his chin thoughtfully and considered the senshi Valhalla described. The him was a little distracting, and Remarque gave the knight a scrutinous look before just shrugging. Ganymede was an unfamiliar name, though the description he recognized after a few seconds of thought. "Oh." That was a him? To be fair, his memory of the night hadn't been particularly striking, but maybe he was just so used to pretty senshi ladies that all those ruffles were just misleading. "No, he sounds like someone I met. Goes around with a chibi, pretty sassy?"

He took a more relaxed posture and, confident enough that Valhalla's description fit the senshi he had in mind, admitted, "I'm not sure we got off on the best of footing. For whatever reason, chibi senshi don't seem to like me. It is difficult to remain passive when they're attacking you."

Valhalla made a face akin to a grimace when Remarque commented on Ganymede being ‘sassy’. “Yeah, that’s the one,” he admitted, although his grimace didn’t cease as he continued.

“I’m sorry about him… the chibi, I mean…” he apologized, fighting the urge to roll his eyes, although he was glad Oberon hadn’t been hurt due to his stupidity. “That would be my kid brother…”

Again, the nagging feeling in his gut was telling him that he needed to be more careful about what he was telling this young man who could very well end up turning around and hurting those he cared about… but it was the stronger urge to trust him that had Valhalla disclosing things that should probably be kept more closely guarded.

“I’m glad no one got hurt,” he concluded. “Oberon… really isn’t that bad… just young and stupid… Not that that should excuse whatever he did, although I’m sure however you retaliated was deserved I just… it’s kind of scary knowing how closely involved some people are in this and we may never find out that… you might be my cousin!” he rambled, gesturing to Remarque with his hands exaggeratedly in an attempt to stop himself from rambling.

He wasn’t afraid of dying, but the idea that someone he cared for could get hurt or be killed? That was what terrified him most…

"Kid brother?" Remarque prompted, raising a brow. Well, there was another thing he wouldn't have guessed. "You sure do have a lot of strange ties, you know that? You seem like the only normal one in the bunch."

He shrugged, still just sort of taking it in. Married to the sassy one, with a kid brother that was a chibi. So why was Valhalla a knight? Was that something that ran in the family?

…Should he be concerned that people in his family had the potential to be senshi or knights, too?

Dismissing the surprised expression from his face, Remarque just rolled his shoulders to relax. As interesting as it was listening to Valhalla go on about this or that, he wasn't so good at staying quiet for long periods of time, himself. "You don't have to worry about apologizing. You can't control kids. Especially the ones you're related to. Maybe he'll be as nice a guy as you when he grows up a bit. For now, I'll make sure to take it easy on him if he gives me any trouble. I'll keep my eye out for him. If I see him, I'll stop him from getting into too much trouble."

Or picking fights with the wrong people.

Maybe.

Valhalla smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He was quite aware that he had many strange ties and didn’t bother going even more in depth. He wasn’t sure what constituted as ‘normal’ unless he just meant ‘boring’.

He snorted softly when Remarque suggested his brother growing up to be a nice guy like him. While he had no idea what Peter would be like, since he was such a little brat, it would be nice to actually see him get older and maybe grow out of his obnoxiousness.

“Hopefully he will,” he said, nodding in thanks to Remarque for his offer to keep an eye out for him. “Maybe he’ll get lucky and not be killed or corrupted…” he mumbled as an afterthought, before sighing lightly through his nose with a shrug. “Not everyone goes easy on kids… Some tall blonde Nega officer hurt him pretty bad a while back…”

At least he wouldn’t have to worry about Remarque hurting him… Others? Not so much…

Remarque seemed to contemplate this for a moment; he knew a number of Negaverse officers, though 'tall blonde' wasn't exactly descriptive enough for him to imagine any one in particular. "Doesn't seem like it'd really be all that satisfying to rough up a kid. Don't suppose you'd be able to convince him not to power up or anything?"

He didn't linger on the question; he figured it would be like someone trying to convince him not to power up. Still, it would be nice to be one less chibi senshi. It was someone less for him to worry about not accidentally murdering.

"He realizes what he's gotten himself into, right? And he doesn't have any PTSD issues, or have any other issues—developmentally—for trying to keep that whole senshi business a secret from everyone, or…?"

The question was left hanging; he wasn't really sure what he was asking from all of this. He didn't care about the chibi, but then again—he'd never really understood them.

…It's not like he could tolerate any one of them for long enough to ask.

”I… don’t know,” Valhalla admitted a bit sheepishly. It wasn’t a secret that he and his younger brother didn’t get along all that well, but now he felt like a jerk for not taking the time to make sure Peter hadn’t been traumatized by what was going on.

“I think he’s like me… he just wants to be able to help somehow… And if that means dusting a youma, then why not…?” he forced himself to admit, before shaking his head. Other than what he knew about Peter from Paris, their eight year age difference didn’t really make it easy to understand each other.

Or maybe Valhalla just didn’t try hard enough.

“He managed to keep it a secret from me until recently, but others knew… I guess I’m not the best big brother, huh?” he said with a forced half grin, one that was obviously shameful of his lack of interest in his kid brother’s life until he realized he was just like him.

“He awakened to help save Ganymede from a youma,” he decided to share. Valhalla didn’t like the thought of little kids in the war any more than the next person, but he could at least admit he was glad Tomlin had been around at that moment, and that Peter had been able to help. “They’re not helpless nuisances, although I can understand why people think of them that way…” Who in their right minds would want to fight a kid, anyway?

Remarque couldn't imagine Valhalla would have made for a bad brother; the guy seemed to have a bleeding heart, so if he could be so compassionate towards a stranger, how could he not be the same for a brother?

…Not that Remarque would have had any experience in that field. He made for a bad big brother.

But that wasn't exactly his problem, and it certainly wasn't something he gave a damn about.

"I'd believe you, on that chibi business. I've met a few of them. Handfuls, all of them. But I suppose you'd be hard pressed to find someone who wanted to fight a kid." Oh, sure, he'd roughed them up a bit—if you counted pushing them over as fighting.

Or throwing them.

"Those two make a good pair. Oberon and Ganymede. A little headstrong but," he shrugged. "Whatever keeps them alive, I guess. They might do well to be a little more like you. At least you share the dusting youma part, right? Good for you. I hate them, myself." His lip curled to form a vague sneer and he shook his head. "Which I suppose I probably shouldn't advertise but if you're talking about family and significant others, I suppose we can at least be honest with each other."

Guine
PostPosted: Mon Dec 02, 2013 2:32 pm

The fact that Remarque suggested that he was being honest with him, whether or not he really was, had Valhalla lighting up, and he grinned like a kid on Christmas morning. “Absolutely, although if there was a way to get them back into subspace without dusting them, I would… At least with wraiths, they can go through mirrors and all.”

He had yet to kill a wraith, although he also hadn’t crossed too many of them. Thankfully. He didn’t want to give Remarque a reason to be angry with him. Valhalla would like to try to not kill youma, but sometimes they were just too wild to tame.

“I’ll let them know they should be more like me,” he laughed, before glancing towards the center of the city where he could feel a few more auras flaring up. It probably wouldn’t be good for them to stand around as they were. “I’ll catch you around, okay?” he smiled once more as he took a step back, confident that they’d cross paths again soon.

Remarque, equally aware of the auras, determined that he probably shouldn’t be seen with Valhalla if he didn't want to arise any suspicion. "All right, well you watch yourself. Don't get into any trouble."

Especially with the wraiths.

He offered a brief wave though turned; there were plenty of things he could be taking care of, and while checking in on Valhalla had been refreshing, he wasn’t going to linger any more than necessary.

Valhalla seemed to be doing well for himself, and Remarque was confident that he'd continue to do so. It was still a disappointment that Valhalla was on the wrong side of the war, but at this point, he'd take whatever he could get.

There was always hope for the future.
