Kyamari was never a very brave child to begin with.
When she was a young child, she held onto her brother (not mentioned here) for every ounce of strength and comfort that he could give to her. She was often picked on by older kids, simply because her breathing problems would not allow her to be as active as the other kids. But her brother helped her throughout everything.
One night, however, everything changed. A thief broke into their house in the middle of the night, and although her brother tried to defend her against the thief, in a panic, the thief slit her brother's throat. Panicked, Kyamari started to fight back, And in the end, only she was standing. The thief lay dead at her feet.
Her brother died that night, but Kyamari continued to train, despite her breathing problems, for the day that she would be needed by someone.
She was needed by a familiar orange haired teen 1000 years later.

*Kyamari can freeze herself in ice, which would re-generate some of her health from a fight. Not a ton though.
*This shikai can also extend an ice shadow to the person she is facing's feet, freezing them in one spot for a short amount of time.
