The wind whispered through the trees in the small meadow where Elaenyra was chained. The cool night air seemed to call to her, promising excitement if she could only join it. She was often tormented by these thoughts on nights like this. Her father kept her chained for reasons that she almost hazily understood sometimes. She hurt people. He thought that was a problem, she didn't. She didn't do it out of cruelty, she just did it because it was what she wanted to do.

Her aunt had left one of the local bat familiars around to keep her company that night. Hialeah wasn't Elaenyra's familiar, or anyone else's. She was her own bat and hadn't shown any inclination to bond to someone, though she remained in the Draculesti territory and often came by to chat.

"Hialeah," sighed Elaenyra, deliberately mournful. "Would you go fly out and find a stallion brave enough to release me?" It was a ritual she had with the bat. She would ask to be released, Hialeah would refuse. Elaenyra kept asking out of hope that Hialeah would change her mind some night, though with no real expectation that she would.

"My wings could not carry me far enough to find that stallion," replied Hialeah. She wouldn't unleash the danger that was Elaenyra on any unsuspecting soquili. No free flying bat liked to see another creature bound, but it was either that or slay the deranged soquili.

Elaenyra scowled and pouted, not appreciating this comment among her many rejections. "I wouldn't hurt a brave stallion who rescued me." This wasn't true in the slightest. Two halves existed within Elaenyra. Part of her was convinced that she wouldn't hurt a friend or a rescuer, but the other part didn't understand why she should refrain from hurting anyone.

"And I bet there are hundreds of stallions nearby," she huffed. "Father can't possibly drive all of them away."

What neither the bat nor Elaenyra realized was that there was a stranger nearby. Proserpina was almost invisible in the darkness. Only her eyes were visible in the shadows, many red glintings watching the pair. Proserpina was content to just eavesdrop for some time, but eventually grew bored of that. The strong protector of the strange soquili that lived in this area was nowhere to be seen. There was nothing stopping Proserpina from walking right out in the open, and that's exactly what she did.

"Hello there," she murmured. She was careful to stay out of the reach of the chains. The mare might be able to do some damage if she was let loose. "I never thought I'd see a soquili chained up by a fellow soquili. I had thought it was only humans who played that game." Proserpina eyed the other mare disdainfully. Anyone who was able to be caught deserved to be.

Hialeah let out a sharp cry and flapped up higher into the air in surprise. Elaenyra was equally shocked by the sudden appearance of the stranger. She instantly forgot her romantic musings and switched to a more defensive posture. Despite herself, she wished that her father was around. The mare... didn't even look like a soquili. She looked like a monster to Elaenyra, and Elaenyra was used to spooky soquili.

Her stomach turned at seeing the mare's body flickering into mist. Her pawed feet were equally unnatural, though she had no pelt suggesting skinwalker heritage. She initially thought the red spots on the mare were scales and were horrified when she realized they were eyes. That was enough for her. "Go get father!" she hissed to Hialeah. Her heart gave a jolt when the bat disappeared, even though she knew it meant that help was on the way.

With no one but herself for defense, Elaenyra flared her wings defensively. "Stay away!" she growled, gnashing her sharp teeth.

Unimpressed, Proserpina gave a low chuckle at that display. "What makes you think I'm going to hurt you?" she asked. She took a step closer, but still was far outside of the other mare's reach. "I just wanted to have a look at what sort of animal was penned here."

She spat out the word "animal" like it was a curse. It was meant to offend and there would be no missing that. She would expect nothing else, even if it was her chained up there. Soquili were not bound. Horses were bound, their dumb and unfeeling cousins. Proserpina was filled with disdain to see one of her kind in this manner.

Animal? Elaenyra's nostrils flared. She gave a yank at her chains, fighting against them to reach her enemy. She couldn't open her mouth wide enough to get it around Proserpina's throat, but she tried nonetheless. She shook and rattled her chains until the first wave of rage had passed, only then pausing to pant and glare at the monster before her.

"I am an animal?" she hissed, full of malice. "I am of the Draculesti family! We are royalty beyond the seas! In my homeland, I would have been a princess!"

"A princess?" What a ridiculous assertion. "You aren't in your homeland, my pet." She smirked, as if she had just told a particularly funny joke. "Here, you're nothing." What sort of princess would be kept in chains? Proserpina personally thought the mare was just delusional. She was obviously not right mentally. Physically...

Proserpina gave her another look over. She couldn't see any features that looked very much like royalty. The mare had angeni features, which was something. If she had been pure angeni then Pros might have believed it, but not with the kalona horns and tail. The morbid markings also didn't seem terribly royal. "If you are a princess, then I'm a rabbit," she added derisively. There weren't many soquili that would look less like a princess than that mare.

"Well I am a princess," Elaenyra snapped back. "Which makes you a rabbit." She eyed Proserpina like a predator might eye their prey. "I'm hungry tonight. I would rather enjoy some rabbit." She had never killed a soquili before. She had never even seriously harmed one. How she would like to change that.

"What are you even doing here? Begging for scraps?" The mare just wouldn't stop shifting. Elaenyra took a step back, despite herself. She wanted to fly away. If she didn't have the chains holding her down she wouldn't have anything to worry about. "There is nothing for you here. Go away!" Her voice was more shrill than she would have liked.

Proserpina followed the frightened mare. She followed to within the range of the chains, perhaps a bad idea. The other mare was larger than she was and definitely had the weight advantage. Proserpina wasn't worried. She was fast and had a set of teeth on her that would make a skinwalker jealous.

"Strange, you're the one acting like a rabbit right now," she purred. "Your fear smells a little like one too." Even though she was currently occupied by teasing the mare, Proserpina didn't let down her guard. The bat had gone off for help. She wanted to be able to disappear again as soon as any reinforcements arrived. Getting caught by an angry herd wasn't on her to-do list for that night.

"I am the rabbit?" Elaenyra backed off another several paces, dual instincts attacking inside her. She wanted to run away, but she also wanted to fight and bite. She wanted her father to come and rescue her, but she also wanted to deal with this herself. Seeing Proserpina eying the skies, Elaenyra turned her head upward too. She didn't see her father, or even Serghei coming. All she saw was bats. The endless bats that followed her family.

"Go away!" Briefly distracted, she shouted at the bats that wheeled above her. Their movement reminded her of the shadow beast. Both were dizzying. She snapped at one but was far too slow. It didn't even seem to notice her teeth closing far behind it. Her father ha told her that the bats were a blessing, drawn to their power. She didn't believe that. She didn't believe it one bit.

Was the mare mad? She snapped at the bats like a creature possessed, and Proserpina knew a thing or two about possessed things. Briefly, she wondered if the mare was ill. She knew of some diseases that could cause animals to lose their senses. Proserpina had seen it in raccoons a few times, once even in a squirrel. The squirrel had shrieked and attacked her, a monster a hundred times its size. Maybe this one was infected with a similar disease of the mind. Or maybe she had just hit her head.

Wondering about illness did have an affect on Proserpina. She backed away from the mare slightly, making sure that she was out of reach. She didn't want an infectious bite to make her just as daft as the mare was. "Are you talking to me, or are you talking to the bats?" she asked, taunting. "I don't know if you realized this, but most bats don't have the power of tongues. They don't understand you."

Elaenyra's focus snapped from the bats back to Proserpina, as if remembering that she was there. The bats turned and turned above her and the monster flickered and writhed in front of her. So many eyes winked at her, like out of some fetid nightmare. Suddenly she wondered if she was even awake. She had very vivid dreams from time to time and this was starting to seem like one of them. How else could she be looking at a soquili with the paws of a wolf that shimmered like smoke?

"I said, go away." She repeated herself forcefully, but quieter this time. If it was all a dream, she had much less to worry about. She'd wake up and be rid of this stupid mare that was here to bother her. She still wanted to bite her, but it was with less urgency now.

There was definitely something off here. Proserpina's upper lip drew back with distaste. "Are you sure that you want me to leave?" she asked. "If I did, you might go back to chasing bats." So that was why she was chained up. Someone had the right idea when dealing with that one. Maybe it was a human. Few others were nimble enough to work chains like that.

"Even if I did leave..." Proserpina drew away and slipped into a shadow. She seemed to merge with it almost entirely, making her invisible but for gleaming eyes. "How could you ever be certain that I was really gone?"

Elaenyra didn't like that one bit. Agitated, she tossed her head. She hated the idea of the shadow mare slinking around outside of her sight. How was she supposed to defend herself against an enemy she couldn't see? She wished she was able to command and control the bats. If she could have sent a bat swarm to attack the shadow creature it would have solved a lot of problems. Sadly, she only had one bat that would listen to her and that bat was gone.

"What makes you think I even care if you're there?" she shouted to the black. "Watch if you want. I have nothing to hide. Nothing!"
