It was a beautiful day in Phonyville, the perfect weather to take a walk. Fruit Punch had gone out in search of a gift for a little filly he had a crush on, but had yet to find the perfect present. His mothers hadn't given him any money to spend so he was stuck looking for something that didn't have a price tag. He had no idea what a girl might like that wasn't expensive, but he'd think of something.
After walking down a dirt road for a while, the colt slowed his pace down as he approached a greenhouse. That was when it hit him. Flowers, duh! Every girl liked those, and they weren't expensive at all. He noticed that the door was wide open, so he stepped inside. There were so many flowers with all sorts of colors and scents, he'd never even known there was such a wide variety in the first place! One of these would definitely do the trick.
And no phony was around? Turning his head, Fruit Punch didn't see any adults or other foals in the greenhouse with him or out of the foggy windows. Well, well, well! He really could get this done cheaply if he didn't say a word about it...

Hydrangea had only left his greenhouse for a second to run inside to grab some water dissolving fertilizer for a new shipment of plants he had in. He trotted with almost a girlish skip to his gate as the watering can floating along his head effortlessly via his unicorn magic. When he got to the entrance of his greenhouse however, he paused.
Curious, the door seemed slightly more ajar than he remembered leaving it... perhaps it was just the wind? With a shrug, Hyd trotted in humming a song, his eyes shut softly as he began watering a row of beautiful blue flowers that were bunched in bundles like balls blooming off the plants. The very flowers he was named for. "Your going to bloom so beautiful..." he cooed to them softly, opening his eyes and peering for any signs of leaf damage or disturbances.
His ears flickered a moment as he thought he heard something. Lifting up his head he flipped back part of his mane and glanced around. "Hello...? Is anyone in here?" he called cautiously.

Fruit Punch hadn't heard right away when Hydrangea had entered the greenhouse, too busy searching for the right kind of flower for the sweet little filly he wanted to surprise. Blue? No, not bright enough. Yellow? Eh, that was a little too flashy in his opinion. "C'mon, there's gotta be one around here somewhere..." He muttered under his breath. His search didn't take much longer because soon he found exactly what he was looking for; pink tulips. Using his teeth, he plucked a couple blooms and turned around, right when Hyd asked if somebody was there. Uh oh.
The foal shifted on his hooves, knowing it wouldn't be good if this guy thought he was stealing. He'd need to come up with some excuse and fast, so he could get out of here and deliver these. He decided to speak up, switching to use the magic of his horn to hold the flowers while he talked. "It's just me, sir. I saw the door was open and I thought I'd sample the quality of your flowers. I'm just taking a sample for study, but they look great! If you'll excuse me, I'll be on my way now.."

Hyd heard a voice not far from the tulips and poked his head over a fern to see. What he spotted as a young colt with a couple of pink tulips in his mouth. Before Hydrangea could flip his mane and say a word, the young colt was talking out words faster than he could register.
He shook his head and held up a hoof, trying to take the tulips from the boy with his own magic after setting down the watering can carefully. "Wait wit... quality of my flowers?!" he asked in a slight panic before rushing to look at the rest. "Are they contaminated? That can't be, I take excellent care of them I assure you..." be huffed nervously at a few plants before going back to stand in front of the colt. Somehow he looked familiar. Had he seen him before? "You weren't trying to steal my flowers... were you?" he eyed FP suspiciously. If he had just asked... he would have gladly given the colt some flowers.

Wow, he couldn't believe this guy, or was it a girl, had actually begun to believe his lie! He'd pulled that one right out of nowhere but it if had sounded good enough. If this had been any kind of an appropriate situation, the young phony would have honestly grinned at how good he was getting at smooth talking. Mama Lemon's lessons on 'being able to sell anything' sure were paying off!
But before he could make an attempt to escape the greenhouse, Hydrangea had caught onto his bluff and now was asking him if he was attempting theft. Dangit..! This plan had almost worked, too. He knew he wouldn't be able to keep it up with the convincing spontaneity though. Releasing the flowers from his hold, he returned them to Hyd before speaking again. "Okay, here's the truth... I wanted to get some for a girl, but I don't have any money. You left the door wide open, so what else was I supposed to do..." His gaze fell downward and his cheeks puffed a little in a pout as he admitted to his attempt to steal the tulips.

Hydrangea had turned to fuss over his flowers again before his ears flickered towards the words of the colt. Aha! So he was trying to steal flowers! ... Well... but for a girl.... which seemed ok. Every nice pilly deserved some flowers... but that wasn't the point! As thoughtful as this little one was, you couldn't just go around stealing things!
Using his magic, he took the flowers back. "Well for one you don't just barge in without permission... even if what you wanted to do is very sweet." he said in his most stern voice ever... which really wasn't that stern. "Also, you could have just asked. I am more than happy to give you a giant bouquet of flowers for this lady friend of yours." he said with a soft smile.

Fruit Punch's ears folded back when Hydrangea began to scold him, figuring he would get a good talking to for this one. He wasn't a regular trouble maker or anything like that anyway, but still the colt had an understandable fear of being punished for doing something wrong. To his surprise, Hyd didn't raise his voice at all, and simply said it wasn't a good idea to just waltz onto someone else's property and take something without asking.
Huh, maybe being honest wasn't such a bad deal after all! The unicorn cheered up when the offer was made to help him create a bouquet for the girl he liked. What a nice adult. He'd have to come back here again. "I'm sorry for lying to you... and thanks for not getting mad at me." In the end, Fruit Punch felt like he'd made the right decision.

Hyd smiled and nodded his head, already going off to set up a nice bouquet full of eye catching and good smelling flowers...ones that meshed well though. Couldn't just go sticking flowers together, it was like art. "Here, your little lady friend is sure to like this. She's very lucky!" he smiled and offered a wink, hovering the bouquet over with his magic. "And thank you for appologizing. I'm Hydrangea... if you ever want any gifts for the ladies again, just stop on by." he nodded and picked up his watering can to go back to his work.

The little foal followed after the adult phony to see what exact kind of bouquet would be made for the girl he had his eye on. He was still in practice of being a good gift giver, and Fruit Punch was pretty sure flowers were a good idea for someone that was still just a friend. When Hydrangea had arranged all of the flowers after selecting each bloom carefully, he beamed with joy. He probably couldn't have done a better job himself.
When the flowers were all put together, he used his magic to hold them close, speaking again. "My name's Fruit Punch. Thank you again, Hydrangea." Hadn't he heard that name somewhere before..? Rather than bringing it up that this phony seemed a little familiar but he couldn't quite place why, the foal simply shrugged it off and headed on his way out. "I'll come back some other time! Goodbye!" And with that, the colt was on his way.
