Sometimes you needed fast-food, but you didn't want it to be an in-and-out experience. More times than he could remember in this past year, Jett had been grabbing late night fast food and darting away before he'd even taken his first bite.
He was tired. And Raven had reminded him how nice a little normalcy was.
Even though he was out late enough that it didn't really count as normal.
He stepped into the diner type restaurant; they had a drive through, so he knew they could whip up a meal quick enough, but he could take his time, eat it inside—even play with stocks a little. He had almost gotten out of the habit but made a quick comeback and a quick buck (or several hundred) and it was all the motivation he needed.
It was a nice place, but it was cool enough inside that he pulled his jacket back on even as the cashier gestured for him to seat himself. It was a comfortable, very retro, vintage style dining area. He slid into one of the glossy vinyl booths and reached for a menu, flipping it open and skimming the descriptions. He was salivating only a few seconds in.
It should have been illegal to sell so many different types of burgers, but damn it all if he wasn't in heaven.

A job was a job, and money was money, but damn there were times when Cambria wished that her job had a more normal set of hours. When you worked at a place that was open twenty four hours a day…well. Then you ended up getting some craptastic shifts, that much was for sure. Luckily though, there was only an hour and a half left of this shift, only an hour and a half and then she could go home and have two wonderful days to sleep and keep her butt planted firmly against a chair…watching some sort of movie marathon. She owed it to herself. This damn place had been working her half to death this week and it was just crazy.
She saw Jett walk in and sit down, and after deliberating for a long moment, she finally went over, plastering a cheery smile on her face. Well, at least he was attractive.
Very attractive, for that matter.
”Hey there! Welcome, what can I get for you this evening? May I tempt you with a milkshake? They’re all hand dipped and delicious, I promise!”

Jett wasn't sure how he wanted to perceive the smiling girl in front of him; instinctively he flashed her a small smile. He wasn't bubbling with joy, though he suspected she wasn't either. But you always tip better for a smiling waitress, she had to know that.
"I'm not much for milkshakes, sorry." He tapped a picture in the menu, though—a very delectable looking burger, topped with almost everything you could put on a burger and still call it American. "Burgers, though. Those sound good." They all looked good, and he was too tired to read the menu; all he wanted to do was sink his teeth into one already.
He flashed her a better smile, this one full of a little more charm. "A nice girl like you probably knows the best thing on the menu, right," he paused, taking a second to glance at her nametag. "Cambria? That's a pretty name."
He sat up, folding the menu closed. "—But I'm going to be a difficult customer, even if you are easy on the eyes. Will you do me a favor and surprise me with something? I'm not a picky man, I just need to keep my evening interesting."

Of course. She hated when they refused her upsale. The managers ate it up when you could provide them with a milkshake sale. Or a dessert sale. Or any large sale at all for that matter…and to be honest, she wanted to be noticed.
When he mentioned her surprising him, her smile fell rather considerably. Oh boy. A stupid d**k move if she had ever seen one. Was this simply a ploy to try and get a free meal? Have it all rest on her shoulders, and if she did something wrong he would complain, and tell her manager that he wanted the meal for free? Oh hell no. Well. She’d do something simple, maybe. Something easy. A normal burger with normal things. There was no way he could complain about that. Maybe.
”Of course sir. Not a problem at all. I’ll be back soon! May I get you anything to drink while you wait?”

"Coffee, if you can," he replied; soda and sugar just weren't sounding good to him, and water was too damn plain. Plus, he needed a little extra energy to keep him awake—at least until he got home. He leaned back in the booth, rolling his shoulders enough to relax. There was something strangely soothing about letting someone else take care of things, and even if he liked to be in control most of the time, he could handle leaving one meal up to someone else.
He saw something then, a nicely dressed woman who seemed particular prim given the hour, munching on a burger that just didn't look right. Mostly because she'd sullied the best part of it, he imagined. "My only request is that you not get me anything vegetarian. Please," he added, to emphasize the importance of this.
If he wanted to eat grass, he'd go nibble at the yard, thank you very much.

Cambria nodded and scribbled something down on her pad before disappearing into the back, putting in the order for just about the biggest burger that they had in the place. A monster thing that was full of meat, complete with bacon and three patties, all covered in a mess of cheese, and maybe she might have told the cooks to add a heaping amount of lettuce, tomato and onion just to piss the guy off.
She wasn’t supposed to be in charge of picking what they got to eat, after all.
When the food was ready, she delivered it to his table, placing the rather heavy plate in front of him. “And here you are. The feast of meat. I hope you enjoy it.”
She paused, then looked at him for a moment. “Can I get you anything else, sir?”

Jett had been engrossed in his phone until she returned, and he eyed the burger with a bit of surprise. His eyes drifted from the monstrosity to Cambria's face. He looked at her for a few seconds and then smiled. It wasn't a happy smile, but he feigned it anyway. "I must look hungry."
If he didn't, she certainly wouldn't have brought him this. Unless, of course, she had done so with intent to spite him.
But he wasn't going to be outdone. "It looks perfect, thank you. I appreciate you taking the extra effort."
His competitive nature was already kicking in; the burger wasn't that big, anyway. He could finish it. Probably.

“You did look hungry, so I brought you the most meat ridden burger we had. Not vegetarian by a long shot, I assure you.” She tucked her pen behind her ear and shrugged. “So I’ll leave you to it. I’ll be around if you need anything. So…yeah. Have at that monster. I have to say, when people finish it, they’re always full to the brim…so I’ll treat you to a milkshake if you eat it all.”
Okay. So if he was going to be like that, Cambria was going to do her own thing and really just go out on a limb. She winked at Jett then laughed. “The milkshake’ll be on me. Okay?”
Even if he didn’t want one. She didn’t care. Just so he left her a damn good tip. That was what mattered.

"Full to the brim and you want to feed me more afterwards? Are you trying to make me explode?" he reached both hands for the burger and lifted it for inspection.
Well, he couldn't say he didn't expect this. He was just going to make the best of it.
"You're really persistent with that milkshake. I hope they're as good as you're leading me to believe." If she was working to earn a good tip, she was doing a good job at it.
This burger was making his mouth melt; he couldn't resist any longer and leaned forward, sinking his teeth into the behemoth. Despite the thick layers of vegetables, the meat more than made up for it. The burger was heavenly, and his fondness for it showed.

Cambria tried to hide her grin, but finally just shook her head then disappeared back into the kitchen, making two milkshakes and waiting a few more minutes before exiting again, dropping the one off right in front of Jett. “Would you mind if I joined you? I figured I’ll take my break or something. Provided you wanted the company.”
She hovered over him for a moment, then shrugged, plopping the other milkshake down and taking a seat across from him. “The restaurant’s empty anyway, so…yeah. Did you like the burger? It looked quite splendid, if I do say so myself.”

Jett waved his hand nonchalantly when she first approached; he was on the last bite, though with his mouth full, he didn't want to speak. He turned to his side and lifted a napkin, covering his mouth until he finished swallowing. After a quick wipe he nodded, "Oh, of course, help yourself. Help yourself. I don't mind company."
Just as long as Raven didn't come in; he didn't want to repeat the last time she'd caught him dining with another girl—even if that had been a huge misunderstanding. With her temper, he wasn't sure he'd be able to talk himself out of it this time.
"Burger was good." He'd eaten quick enough that his stomach wasn't furiously protesting, though he expected that in a bit. Overeating wasn't quite his cup of tea, but he'd sacrifice a stomachache to buffer his pride.
"If you'd said so, I would have saved a bite for you."
He pulled the milkshake she had brought for him and stirred it a bit before taking a sip.
And it was good.
And he couldn't even be happy about it because he hated being wrong.

Cambria drew her milkshake close and took a long sip of it, grinning. Yeah. Yeah she did good. It was really a good one, one of her best, honestly.
“So. I hope you liked your food and all. And I hope you come visit us again. We appreciate your business and all that jazz.” She took another sip of her drink then leaned back in the booth, sighing. “And I’m just glad that someone came in. I was honestly bored to tears…it gets awful at this time of the night. Nobody’s here and it’s so late. I just get sleepy, I guess.”
The girl laughed, then glanced around, sure enough the restaurant was completely empty save for Jett. And even he was a rarity. She really couldn’t figure out just why this place was open twenty four hours. It didn’t need to be.

Jett couldn't help but laugh. "You sure you should be saying that to a customer? I could report you to your boss or something. I'm sure that wouldn't go over well."
He smiled, to show that he was just teasing. There wasn't anyone else around, so it seemed awkward to chase away the only company he might have. Even if he liked his quiet, he got enough of that at home. Being social was rejuvenating—and though he'd had his coffee, being social was the last little kick he needed to stay awake. He took another sip of his milkshake and then leaned back, savoring the flavor for a short while.
"Though, I'm sure what that smile of yours, you could probably get away just about anything."
Oh—oh wait, you weren't supposed to say that to a girl. Not when you were dating.
Shiiiit.
Okay, so. Don't ever come back here.
He was going to blame the lack of sleep, but that was not something he wanted to toss onto the pile of reasons for Raven to be pissed at him.
Okay, so. Just play it cool.
He reached for the milkshake and took a large swig.

Awww. Was he flirting with her? Well damn. She must have been doing this thing right after all. Cambria grinned. “Well, you know. Pretty much that’s why I’ve worked so hard in perfecting this wonderful smile of mine.” She sipped her milkshake then looked at him again.
“And what about you? I bet all of the ladies must just swoon over you and your oozing charm, am I right?” Of course she was right. This guy seemed like he could charm a woman out of her skirt in a matter of minutes if he tried hard enough…not that she would ever fall for such a thing ever.
“Anyway, all flirting aside, I do hope you enjoyed your meal and will visit me here again, okay? I get so lonely late at night, and actually having a customer is a lot nicer than sitting at a table rolling silverware all night. Because, damn that’s not good for tips at all…and I meant dang. Not damn. You didn’t hear me say that at all. Nope.”

Jett looked at the girl for a short moment before he shook his head and laughed. "No, of course not. I heard nothing."
He avoided answering the question about charming people. He certainly was the sort who would love to boast about his prowess in such fields—had he not just been so emotionally drained. Would have been nice if he could just charm Raven and have her swooning again. Maybe then he wouldn't be out so late, accidentally flirting with strange waitresses. "Well, if you treat me so nicely next time, I'll make sure to come around more often."
The milkshake was already in a styrofoam to-go cup, so he figured Cambria hadn't actually expected him to finish it there. "Though, unfortunately I do have to depart. Early day tomorrow and all. What does the total come out to?" he prompted, already reaching for his wallet.
