It was makeshift, but it served its purpose: carefully laid out tires, trash cans, lids, littering the roof of four or five more-or-less abandoned buildings in a not-so-great part of town. At a glance, it would look like barely-contained chaos, random piles and scatterings, ropes that stretched across the path. It was a hazard, madness, dangerous and wild.

From above, it looked more elegant. Not that anyone ever saw it from above.

The street below was battered but loud. This part of town was mostly rowdy bars, often playing games on the television with loud crowds spilling out onto the street as results were posted. It offered enough noise to cover up the miserable sounds of unhappy teenager above.

Sisyphus, in uniform but with his hat abandoned back toward the beginning of the tests and his white uniform splattered grey and brown from his efforts, grumbled as he wiggled his way under a stretched rope under the watchful yellow-green eye of his feather-bedecked tormentor.

"...have kicked your a** how many times since you first powered up? Yes. And how many have you won? I thought so." Laoise wasn't exactly a tender teacher. "The black eye says much. So we do this to help prevent it from happening again. To build up strength. We will work from there."

There were two other souls that night that saw the course from above - or as above as it could be seen. Perched carefully on the top of an old, slightly degraded brick chimney, Gehenna crouched and watched the dingy white senshi try, fail and pick himself back up over and over again.

"That's rough," he muttered under his breath as his dark eyes flickered from the paler guy to the wild guardian cat perched nearby.

"No, it's exactly what needs to be done. You're just too stubborn to learn." The snappy words were accompanied by a loud 'hmph' of finality, reminding Gehenna that he hadn't managed to sneak out of the apartment alone. Again.

Invidia was Nemesis' cat, something that developed shortly before he decided to room with her. The two got along as well as anyone expected Nemesis to get along with someone. There was loyalty to one another, but not a lot of kindness. The cat had fallen into that balance without any difficulty and while Gehenna respected her, he still really just wished she'd shut her pie hole.

"Stop being such an old bitty, Invy," Gehenna fired back, then slipped carefully off of the chimney to the rooftop floor. The ball of dark gray fur slipped down after him, tagging along with Nemesis' closest alley in her absence. Without another word to the cat he took a few steps back and then bolted forward, sailing over to the next rooftop. He kept charging until he'd jumped another crevice, landing with a loud thud and a half-crouch on the roof top the pair was training on.

He drew a deep breath to steady himself and stood up to his full height, not even glancing back as a less flustered Invidia hopped gracefully onto the roof at his side.

"Interesting choice for boot camp, yanno!"

Strange knights out of the sky wasn't, apparently, enough to give Laoise a run for her money. For her part, the cat merely turned a look at him, green eyes narrowed and tail swishing in thoughtless annoyance, and took him in.

It was Sisyphus who gave the satisfying response. Halfway under a rope and moving forward, he straightened all at once and only succeeded in knocking himself back down, dirt on his face and his tie and pale hair gone stringy, tumbling forward into his eyes. He tangled himself up in the obstacle course and, whimpering more than he cursed, struggled to get himself out again.

While he worked, Laoise settled, tipping her chin up a bit. "We make use of what we can find, don't we? Do you want to have a go?"

For what is was worth, Gehenna managed not to laugh at Sisyphus when he became his own worst enemy. It was only because he had been observing at Invidia's command, but he had seen the senshi's devotion and hard work as he was knocked down over and over again.

"I dunno, I've got all this armor, " he shifted his arms and legs to make a soft c***k, c***k between the plates sporadically covering his body. He was mid-shrug when his own furry companion piped in.

"Oh, Gehenna, please." The bright-eyed feline twined through his legs awkwardly as he walked, making him stop short to remain upright. Then Invidia simply slipped ahead of him, lithe and powerful for such a large cat. She cast her eyes over her shoulder and fixed him with a competitive stare. "You've not trained in months, what will you do if Nemesis really needs you?"

"Look spacecat, I've told you a dozen times that I'm a Squire of Mars. You know that. I'm not responsible for-" he growled a little and shook his head as the guardian cat simply raised a brow at him, unimpressed with his speech. So, like all hot-headed squires who only know how to solve their problems with their fists, he immediately began to strip off the armor layers of his uniform.

It was as he was trying to pull off his shoulder guard without ripping a dread out that he managed to toss the new guardian cat a look and a half mumbled question: "where does it start and what am I doing?"

Invidia tsked lightly under her breath and glanced at the guardian cat herself. Sometimes she wondered how he managed to get by in day-to-day life without someone pushing him off a cliff. He'd probably just survive it anyway.

Invidia's eyes would settle on Laoise -- poised at the start of the course, still the way only a cat can be, eyes big and unblinking as she watched the pair of them bicker and work. There was something in her expression that was, perhaps, condescending, arrogant, judging...but then, she was a cat. That was, pretty much, her state of being.

It didn't switch off.

By now, of course, Sisyphus had managed to get himself out of the course, swiping at his cheek and grumbling to himself as he did, well aware that this meant he'd have to start over. From the beginning. This time through didn't count. Nevermind that he could just leave if he wanted.

"Why don't you two race through it?" She moved, finally, hopping down off her perch to walk the start of the line -- the tires. It wasn't a long course, at least,or didn't seem that way until you realized it continued onto a second roof. The jump was part of the test.

"Our young Sisyphus here will have the advantage of his small size." Her tail flicked to the ropes as she said it; low enough that Gehenna's bulk would, in fact, be a liability. Of course, the rope that went up over a center stairwell would be more his style. "But you, squire, seem to have the advantage of strength."

Sisyphus, of course, looked exasperated, spreading his hands at Gehenna behind Laoise's back. But he'd do it, if the man agreed.
