Umi was born in a large city in France to a French mother and Egyptian father. Her father, quite disappointed he had a daughter instead of a son, tended to encourage Umi toward less girly activities, and more toward things he'd always wanted to do with a son. He figured it was the next best thing--at least until he had a son. But when Umi's younger brother was born, she continued to spend time with her father and brother camping, playing sports, hunting, and so on. Fortunately, her mother wasn't overly fussed about it and encouraged Umi to do whatever she wanted.
xoxoAs she crept into her teen years, Umi developed an interest in music and eventually took up playing drums. She and two friends started a small band in high school and they continued to play gigs together until college, where Umi began to study music.
xoxoWhen her father's health began to decline, the family decided to relocate to a more peaceful location, choosing Nirvani for his recovery after a lengthy hospital stay. Umi could have chosen to stay at University but decided to take a break from school and help her mother take care of her father. When the family relocated, she got a job as a personal trainer to help support the family.
