Recruiting Natai had gone poorly. Violence had erupted and everyone was blaming the Wherholders’ presence for it. It was just as well, then, that the next mission was scheduled for soon after the diplomatic mission… and would help satisfy some of the rage and vengeance in people’s hearts. Poisonous though those emotions might be, it was recognized by those in charge as a protective layer between the individual and the deeds to be done.

Word of a pending Wher Clutch had filtered through their spies and it was a large, robust clutch with surprisingly large eggs. The result of selective breeding? No one was quite sure but it was obvious what must be done – the Wherhandlers were more agile and had the advantage in close quarters. The population of Whers must be kept to a minimum if they were to have any chance of regaining the halls of Malvren or Benden.

Thus, while the Wherholders were recovering from the Cothold Incident, Malvren struck again. They would sneak in, smash the eggs, and leave before anyone noticed. Disguised among an influx of holdless, vagabonds, and disenchanted, the members of Trine had to make their way into Benden’s halls without being discovered. Whatever might be said of the Wherholders, they gave shelter to anyone who was willing to work for it and many holdless had answered that call, lured by the promise of a fresh start.

Instructions
Each character must roll 3d12 – 1st Roll: Quality of Disguise (Stealth, Diguise), 2nd Roll: Smooth Talk; 3rd Roll: Believeable Behaviour (Dialogue, Lying or Bluffing, whichever is higher).
1-4 is Poor performance, 5-9 is Passable, and 10-12 is Great.

For each Poor rank a character rolls, they get a Mark of Suspicion (MoS). If at any point during the scenarios a character’s MoS count gets to 5, they are found out and trigger special events.

To get in, the characters must speak with an NPC guard tasked with screening incoming individuals. The total rolled by all of the d12s is the group’s collective believability. The NPC rolls a number of dice equal to the number rolled by the PCs, if that total is higher than the group’s they are rejected entry and every character gets 1 MoS. If it is lower, they pass the checkpoint and enter the Wherhold freely.

[Kleos: Disguise 2 - Poor. Smooth talk 7 - Passable. Believeable Behaviour 12 - Great]
MoS: 1]

Kleos had done her best but even skilfully applied makeup couldn't hide the distinctive scars on her face, altering its appearance somewhat was the best that could be done. She would have to make up for that with her manner, she knew that and fully intended to; for her friends held captive in Malvren she would succeed here today and strike a crippling blow against the wherhandlers.

Running through her character in her mind again Kleos moved towards the guards remembering to slouch, and scratch herself at regular intervals.

[F'itz: Disguise 4 - Poor. Smooth talk 1 - Poor. Believeable Behaviour 6 - Passable
MoS: 2]

He had not intended to come on this mission, back to his old home, but thanks to two successive disasters many of those who had volunteered were captured or wounded. Following quietly along behind Kleos F'itz hoped that the brasher character she was portraying would keep the focus off him, and that he didn't run into anyone who had known him too well.

[Etasha]
[Disguise 11 - Great, Smooth Talk 3 - Poor, Believable Behavior 2 - Poor]
MoS - 2

Her disguise had worked surprisingly well this time, despite setbacks during training. With her blond hair covered by temporary brown dye, and her distinctive white flight leathers exchanged for plain but serviceable clothes, she could easily pass for any random woman.

Unfortuately, the natural confidence of Etasha's stride, the way she moved with her head held high and making eye contact with those she passed, were not conducive to the role that she was trying to play. She'd already come dangerously close to talking back to one guard who mistook her for a drudge and tried to order her around.

Xanha
Disguise - Great, Smooth Talk - Passable, Believable Behavior - Poor
MoS: 1

Xanha had volunteered for the mission last-minute, and the dolphincrafter still wasn't entirely sure what they were going up against. She knew that it had something to do with smashing eggs from the wherholders, because Trine needed them to be at less strength than they were - and Xanha was surprisingly up-to-date on news. She knew what had happened with the firestone raids - something that she found unacceptable. Political conflicts or not, the safety of the entirety of Pern rested on dragonriders' ability to protect the skies from Thread, so for Malvren and Benden to sabotage firestone...she saw it as a mark of cowardice, petty political rivalries. Forsaking Pern for the sake of screaming fights over whose d**k was bigger was just so stupid.

Such a human thing to do, she reflected as she walked in the wake of other raiders. Dolphins never doomed their own species over rivalries.

They also never wore boots. Xanha wished she didn't have to. Her disguise was almost-perfect; she had allowed someone else to foist it on her, and it felt strange to not see her dolphineer's knots out of the corner of her eye as she walked. She had so far managed to keep quiet and keep herself out of the public eye as they infiltrated. But Xanha wasn't a Wherholder, had never been a member of Benden or Malvren, and the young dolphineer didn't have the faintest idea of how one was supposed to behave. She had been told once, cursorily, but that was all. Xanha didn't learn quickly, and without sufficient time to repeat the tasks, she wasn't entirely sure she'd even make it in. So far, though, she seemed to be all right. People weren't noticing her, for the time-being.

Still, she had a heavy knife slid into one boot. Xanha wasn't stupid, and she had no interest in running into danger unprotected.

Group total: 2 + 7 + 12 + 4 + 1 + 6 + 11 + 3 + 2 + 10 + 6 + 1 = 65
Guard total: 9, 2, 2, 3, 6, 6, 9, 2, 2, 1, 8, 12 = 62
Success!

----------

In the end only four volunteers from Trine stepped forward for the dangerous mission. In the depths of Benden there could be no rescue by dragon partners; once they entered the wherhold they were trapped amongst their enemies and as the disastrous mission to Malvren had shown, stealth was their only hope of getting out intact.

As they approached the entrance along with the crowd the guard tasked with vetting the travellers straightened up and laid a hand on the pommel of her sword, her pretty lips pressed into a tight line. Her sharp blue eyes ran over the group and the sight of a few of them made her lips purse tighter but she waved them through all the same.

----------

Instructions

Now inside the Wherhold, the group must find the wher clutch. Due to their sneaking about they must remain incognito. The GM will roll 1d6+1 every 3 posts or every (approx) 12 hours fewer than 3 characters have posted. In the following character posts the players must roll 1d10 (Dialogue: Mingling) and beat the GM roll. If they do not roll higher or fail to roll 3 times in a row, they gain 1 MoS from the surrounding NPCs.

Beware of reaching 5MoS, you will find yourselves on the receiving end of unwanted attention!

You the players are aiming for your 1d10 rolls to exceed 400, at this point the clutch will be discovered! Whomever is the character to cross that threshold is the one to find the eggs are found (with GM consent).

At any point, a character may Run for the Hills – that is, roll 1d100 with success being a 65+. A character can use this ability up to 3 times in a row (separate posts).

Xanha - Mingling
MoS: 1
Current total - 5

The guard eyed them. Xanha said nothing, keeping her head down as they were waved into the Wherhold. Once inside, she...cast around absently, unsure of precisely what she was supposed to be doing. She knew what wher clutches looked like, more or less - they were ugly and lumpy, and that was all that mattered, as far as she knew. But at the same time, she wasn't sure where to start, or what to do. Oh well. Casting around vaguely, rubbing the back of her neck, Xanha simply hunched her shoulders and hoped to avoid attention.

Etasha - Mingling
Current Total: 9

There were four of them?

Only four?

Well, Trine could just go fly itself, now couldn't it?

And she didn't have Coryxoth for backup while she was within the walls of Benden, which made Etasha feel twitchy and awkward and curiously vulnerable. It was a feeling almost precisely identical to that recurring nightmare where you're a weyrling again and you show up to lessons without your pants on.

Shifting closer to the other Trine folks, Etasha kept her voice to a low, conversational tone. "So, either of you familiar with the lower caverns layout here?" They were new arrivals. Just like any other new arrivals. That was all. Don't mind us, wherholders.

F'itz Mingling 5-2 =3
Total: 11
MoS: 2

------

"I've... visited once or twice," F'itz mumbled awkwardly, keeping his head ducked down. "I think we should go this way to ah... the dininghall." Somehow he had a feeling he was performing poorly but it was hard to focus on that with everything in his home so... so... unchanged. The halls looked as they always had, and though the people were different he hardly saw them. Benden. How he had missed it.

Kleos grunted and shrugged. "Never been 'ere before," she said, and spat off to one side. "So long as you're, old man, we'll go that way then." Oh good grief she would have to apologise to F'itz later for being so rude to him as her elder, and to everyone here for being so remarkably uncouth for that matter. It was all part of the act though, and with just the four of them... they had to succeed, those wher eggs were clearly important to Keller and his cause and so they had to go. She didn't like the deceit though, it made her skin crawl to slink around in such an underhanded manner.

"Here, you four know where you're going?" A tall wiry man drifted over to the quartet, a small smile on his lips. "You new here if I'm right? Just come in? Well, welcome to the cause then friends! You'll find a good life here, I promise you that!" Though the man's manner was open and friendly his padded leather garb had the look about it of a guard's uniform, and watched them all rather intently.

Xanha - Mingling
MoS: 2
Current total - 17

They were talking. They were talking a lot. Xanha didn't respond to Kleos or F'itz, and her attention strayed only briefly to Etasha. She didn't like this; it didn't look like the weyr she was familiar with, and she felt cold and overdressed. Her fingers clenched reflexively, and she shook her head. She felt so out-of-place here, sun-darkened as she was. She wanted to be back outside, where she had a sense of the wind and the currents. But Benden was landlocked anyway. She was stuck here until the task was over.

The tall man who approached them made her jerk up in surprise, but she said nothing, shrugging awkwardly instead.

Oh, shells. Another guard had noticed them.

"Yeah, you caught us," she replied to the guard, matching his friendly manner and smile. "New arrivals all. I'm a tanner, just come in from the Hold - I figure with so many dragons about, you're gonna need good leather, right?"

Keeping up her casual, friendly demeanor, she glanced around at the others. "In the meantime, though, my new friends and I are starved and sick of caravan rations. So we'll be off to the dining hall if you don't mind."

F'itz looked down sharply, heart rate picking up as he realised he recognised the man. It was only a vague sense that he knew him, he couldn't even have said if the man was rider, handler, or unbonded but he knew he'd seen him around Benden. "Yes, we're fine," he managed to mutter. "...Glad to be here," he added after a moment.

As well as apologising to F'itz later, Kleos decided that she was going to tell him that he needed to learn when to be quiet. "Yeah," she nodded, "we know where we're going. 'spect I'll see you around? Thanks f' the welcome anyway." With that and a nod Kleos headed on the way they had been going, hoping desperately that they weren't being watched too intently.
