The longer days and hot weather signaled the close of spring as summer crept closer to Destiny City, and the heat was a fine reason for parents of idle hands to send their children outside.

Today, a perfect, clear day without more than high clouds, was such a day, and Daniel's mother had sent him, and his brother Thomas, out to get some sun and perhaps fight less in the house. Thomas, of course, had to make off with Daniel's favorite soccer ball to a friend's, and that left the ten year old rather unhappy as he trudged through to the park, stamping a few bugs along the way. He'd really wanted to find some others to play soccer with, and now he couldn't. Oh yes, Thomas would pay. Why did he need Thomas anyway? Burro.

Slowly the young boy made his way to the playground equipment and plunked down with a hearty sigh on a swing, swinging slightly, but not trying terribly hard nor moving more than a couple inches.

It was so boring today without his ball, and he sighed, watching the other children play. This was simply no fun.

"Tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do you still want me?
If I don't see a ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
"

That was the tune being sung out from a nearby tree.

Some kids went to the park to play.

Mystery, not so much.

The girl was in a pair of capris and a tie-up top and literally perched on the lowest branch of a nearby tree, singing out the classic by Tony Orlando as she balanced a couple objects with her in the plant.

On her arm she had a large roll of ribbon, and settled somewhere on the branch along side her was the pair of scissors she was using to cut the ribbons after she strung them out. Thanks to her efforts, this tree had 23 ribbons tied on it so far, all in that yellow color! If someone needed some cheering up, all they'd have to do was look at that tree and maybe things would be better. Plenty of adults might even think of how beautimous* it was that someone was showing their devotion with ribbons.

She continued to sing until she noticed some boy on the swings. Something seem sourlemonsaurus* about him. The lyrics stopped flowing from her lips, and soon enough the tune was replaced with humming.

If she had a stronger stomach, she might have tried hanging upside down like a monkey and calling out to the boy. However, she'd have issues getting back into the tree if she attempted something like that. So instead she swung her legs back and forth and hollered out "HULLOFERICEROUS, SWING-BOY! HOW'S THE WEATHER OVER THERE?!" She waved her scissors wielding hand wildly in his direction with a large smile on her face.

Daniel hadn't expected anyone to call out to him, and the young boy nearly fell off the swing. Saving his nice clean jersey and khaki shorts, the boy looked towards the tree with round, surprised eyes. For a moment, he expected a bogeyman or a chupacabra, but seeing it was another kid, he blinked slowly.

Hmmm. Looked like a girl. What was she doing with those ribbons and bows?

"Hola." Daniel replied, hiding his surprise. "Como es--"

He stopped himself from speaking Spanish, reminding himself he wasn't at home.

"How are you?"

He stopped swinging, blinking. Curious!

The girl wasn't fluent in all things of the Spanish language, but she had some subtle amounts of familiarity with it. The basic greeting was a giveaway that he spoke Spanish.

Her legs were still swinging as he asked her about how she was doing. Many kids would have said "Fine" and been done with it.

Not so much this girl. In a cheery manner she proceeded to give him a rather thorough assessment of how she was doing.

"I'm fabracular*... thanks for asking! Mom let me come to the park after I finished up with my homework earlier, told me I was allowed to bring some decorations if I wanted. I think she just wanted to get me out of the house, since she had a client there, and I think they were doing some bedroom shots, and she doesn't like having me around for those. Says lots of girls aren't comfortable with a girl my age watching in on that stuff. It's okay, gives me time to make something gormageousisness*!"

She kicked her foot back and forth a couple more times before asking "Wanna guess how many ribbons are in the tree so far?"

So much detail. Daniel studied the tree, listening carefully.

"Hmmm... Tre--Thirty?" He guessed carefully. He was still cross about Thomas an--Wow, she was honest. Well that he appreciated. This meant she was better than kids he was usually around. Except his Soiccer Buddies.

"I'm glad you're well. My Mama sent Thomas and I out because the weather is good and then Thomas stole my soccer ball. So I came here. Nobody is playing though."

He watched curiously. "I like your ribbons."

Very pretty indeed!
PostPosted: Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:24 pm

"Is Thomas a brother or a friend?" was the very first question to chirp out from her pursed lips. She would guess brother, but there was a good chance that Thomas could just be a really horrendublar* friend.

He had made a guess, and the girl resumed humming for a bit, unrolling a bit of ribbon from her arm, snipping it off with her scissors, then tying it about the branch she was currently sitting on. She was now at 24 ribbons now!

"Not quite thirty... close... but not quite..." she chirped out like a bird to the tune she had been humming before. As she scooted along the branch to get further out, she mentioned "I still have a while to go.... do you know Tony Orlando? He's got a song all about this, y'know?""

She paused long enough to gesture to the tree and the yellow ribbons that were surrounding her. "Once I finish this branch, I get to go to one of the other ones... maybe go up a bit higher too... are you any good at climbing trees?"

"Thomas is my big brother." Daniel nodded calmly. "He's a burro."

Oh, Daniel resented his brother. RESENTED. He blinked.

"Huh... High? I can climb, yes." He blinked. "I climb my Abuela and Abuelo's tree every summer. Who is Tony Orlando?"

Was that one of his mom's singers? He tilted his head, but slid off his swing, moving to approach the tree in curiosity.

As the girl pulled out another ribbon from the roll on her arm, she glanced up into the leaves of the tree, thinking for a moment.

"Burro means 'Donkey'... doesn't it?"

Being an only child, she wasn't 100% familiar with the torment that came with siblings. She only had Mom, and she loved Mom to pieces! If the silvery haired girl was to guess, the fact the boy was calling an older brother a donkey was probably not a good thing.

With another acceptable length ribbon, she snipped it. "Tony Orlando is a singer from the 60s and 70s... lots of hits. 'Candida,' 'Knock Three Times,' but my favorite of his is 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree.' He's not nearly as 'big named' as some of the other singers at the time.... but his songs are catchy!"

She delicately maneuvered the ribbon in her fingers as she spoke, and once she finished speaking, another ribbon had seemingly tied itself to the branch. Twenty five!

Soon enough she scooted further again, speaking up again. "Can I ask what an Abuela and Abuelo are?"

"Yeah." Daniel nodded sagely, listening as he began climbing. Okay, she wasn't a big stupidhead so far, so he didn't mind helping. And he had a baby sister to dote on as she grew after all, especially once the crying stopped.

"Mama and Papa mostly listen to Spanish music." He mused. At her question, he blinked.

"Abuela means Grandma, Abuelo is Grandpa."

And he had the best grandparents. Ever.

"They live in Mexico City so I only visit in summer once a year, though. They are lots of fun. Abuelo gave me my soccer ball!"

He puffed out his chest a little. "It's a really nice ball!"

When the brunette began to climb up the tree, Mystery paused and scooted further along the edge of the branch to make room for him. It was the lowest branch and it was perhaps one of the thicker ones too. Plenty of room for the two of them to sit!

"'Abuelo is Grandpa,' so that means your Grandpa got you the soccer ball!" She had a chipper sort of smile upon her face as she announced such. "I have a Grandma and a Grandpa too... They come to visit once a week on one of Mom's days off. They like to help out around the house where they can... I do too... but I do that everyday." Her grandparents were a bit on the young side, and the silvery haired girl knew that. Her mom was on the young side when she had her, and her own parents were relatively young when they had her too. It meant both of her grandparents were still quite able and tended to be busy bodies.

From her new spot, she kicked her feet back and forth to the beat of the song still stuck in her head. Once her new companion seemed to be almost ready to mount the branch, she paused long enough to have both legs semi-latch to the seat she was on. "Oh... I go by Mystery, by the way!" She reached out to him, open palm. Perhaps she wanted a handshake, or perhaps she was offering to give him a tug onto the branch. Or perhaps it was both!

Either way, the girl with the purple eyes with the golden rims now was extending a hand to the complete stranger.

"Yes." Daniel nodded, smiling faintly. He took her hand-- Mama taught him to be polite... Through many trips to Confession -- and he both shook it, and pulled himself up, sitting.

"My mother's parents don't live far, though. Soccer's my favorite." He beamed. Oh, he loved soccer!

"Do you play?"
PostPosted: Thu Jun 06, 2013 10:34 pm

Soccer sure seemed to be coming up in the conversation quite a bit. Mystery would have to be pretty dense to not pick up on the fact he liked soccer. She couldn't say she shared such a passion by any means.

After tugging the boy up onto the branch, she resumed kicking her legs back and forth to the music in her head, giving him an honest answer to his inquiry. "I'm not really a sportsy person. The girls that come by my place have called me 'artsy fartsy'... I like doing things like... well... what I'm doing right now!"

Since he was now up in her perch, she cut a ribbon and soon enough thrust it out at him.

"If I were to guess, you play though! You play on a team? What's the mascot? What are the team colors? What's your number? What's the position you play?"

She scooted closer, eyes attentively upon his as she attempted to get him to latch onto the ribbon she offered him.

He was a little disappointed she didn't play honestly. She looked like she was fun, and not playing... Well, art wasn't terrible. Carefully, he took the ribbon to tie on a branch, thinking of how to word an answer.

"I like playing at school on the team for Knightside. When I can't, I play for a small team called the Panthers." He thought hard again. "My number is 4 and I play where my coach puts me." He nodded slowly. "We get to switch positions. The goal of the goal we play is to kick the ball into the other team's goal." He nodded. He loved soccer.

"Grownups play rougher though."

Very carefully, he began tying a ribbon on a branch. At least she was curious, too.

"I think soccer is fun, but so is... Uhm.." He faltered. "Do you like cooking?" His tone lowered. Most boys teased him for cooking if he mentioned it.

Her companion was now tying a ribbon to the tree, and as he tied, she was cutting another ribbon for herself. With hers, it would bring the total up to 27!

"Didn't realize Knightside had a team! I mean, maybe I should have guessed... but I always forget!" Her own schooling didn't really lend towards having team sports, since it would be a team of one. Then again, she wasn't sporty, so it didn't really matter.

"I think grownups play rougher because they get paid to do the sport. It's their job, they have to put their all into it, right?"

She smiled wide for him before answering his next question. "Nope, don't cook. Mom does that. I just keep her company while she's doing that." Not even a half second passed before she asked "Do you cook?"

A full second managed to pass before she also added "Do you have a name?"

No cooking? Well, not everyone cooked at their age and he nodded to her statements agreeably.

"I think so as well. Grown up sports can be fun to watch though." He rolled over cooking answers in his mind.

"I don't get to use the stove yet, but I can microwave stuff. Papa lets me help him cook. It's fun, especially when I'm allowed to make spicy food."

He beamed, before regarding her next question.

"My name is Daniel Fernando Alvarez-Garcia. Just Daniel is okay. What's your name?"

He decided to himself she was okay. Different, but not awful. She climbed trees, even if it was for ribbons. That much was fun.
