Despite the fact that Aria preferred to keep to herself, the Death Division always cheered her up. No matter what has transpired so far, she could always comfort herself with the fact that (at the very least) she wasn't like Caelius. It wasn't surprising to hear that he had lashed out, and so long as the victim wasn't a member of her Mists? Aria would usually turn a blind eye to it.

This time, though. This time, things would be a little different. She didn't know much about who his latest victim was to the point where she resorted to digging up dirt. And even with that Aria felt under prepared.

The division leader lingered outside the common room, berating herself for her cowardice. With a shake of her head Aria entered the common room, approaching Otto without preamble. "Hey. Word on the street is that you survived Caelius. Congratulations."

Otto casted a miserable glance up the woman who'd addressed him. To his surprise, it was Aria. Should he be more surprised the Mist Division leader decided to chat him up, or that his fateful encounter with Caelius was spreading like wildfire without his knowledge.

Luckily, Aria was probably the only sane Division leader he knew of. So far.

"Um... thanks..?" He murmured, his brows furrowed with distrust. "Not sure survivin' his temper tantrum is somethin' to be proud of.. more like dumb luck." Dumb luck in the form of Sam bailing him out. Or maybe he was a cockroach in a past life, and those superpowers are what kept him alive through all his miserable turmoil since becoming a Hunter.

Otto fidgeted with his phone, wondering if Aria came here to find him specifically or if she was just passing by. He talked no further, blue eyes darting to the blank screen of his phone out of uncertainty.

Aria shrugged. "Take your victories where you can. Caelius has killed more hunters out of spite than I'd care to count. Personally? I'm surprised you made it this far without crossing him sooner." She gestured towards him, indicating his arm. "Deathies tend to end up in worse condition sooner rather than later."

Otto lightly rubbed the sling his hurt arm rested in as she spoke. True. He really could have died at his hands, and all over a dumb question on his part. "I guess you've seen yer fair share then." He murmured, unsure just how long Aria had been at Deus. Long enough, probably.
He himself wondered why he was still in Death. Honestly, he wasn't sure why. Maybe deep down he felt he had no choice but to stay. Or maybe he just didn't want to look like a quitter. He sure never felt qualified to be in Death, but he didn't want to admit he wasn't bright enough to manage it.

"Well.. I ain't got no plans of dyin by his hands anytime soon. So here's to hopin' I learn to keep my mouth shut." Dreamers gunna dream.

Aria simply gave a non-committal nod to his observation. "We were trainees together. But that is besides the point," she hurried on just in case he wanted to know more. To her, the past was better left buried.

She seemed to fidget as she looked around, her confidence as to why she was there in the first place starting to fail her. Get out more, she chided herself, Try to meet other trainees and expand your horizons a bit.

her weapon pointed out dryly.

"Look," Aria cut in suddenly. "I'm not good at this, but I'd take what you went through as a warning. If you need to talk back, share it with your weapon. Hell, if you need to get your smarm out then take it out on Halloween." The division leader shrugged, continuing. "It's my business to know other people's business. Has it occurred to you that you can take note of Halloween students not suited to becoming a weapon? Push their buttons. See who cracks, see who doesn't. Become a conspiracy theorist and make them start doubting themselves and each other. You might push someone there enough to become a potential candidate, if not sniffed out by you then someone else." A pause. "Likely someone else, if your record is anything to go by."

Yuck. Trainees with Caelius. He wondered if he was as psycho then as he was now. Or had the reality of the island turned him nuts?

Brows furrowed and his gaze hardened, feeling as though his mistakes were being continuously jabbed at him like salt in a wound. Talking back. He'd been so good at not doing it for a while, but Caelius made him lose it. Otto's avoidance of eye contact ended as she spoke of weapon's candidates, his gaze flicking up at the division lead.

"Really?" This was news to him. Nobody had ever told him THAT. "I thought I was s'posed to make nice with'em in order to butter them up to our side. So what yer sayin' is I can stay myself and still do good work? ********.. why didn't nobody say so earlier? Woulda saved me a world of pain.." This news was clearly enlightening. He was not a people person, and making friends with halloween in order to get them to their side was impossible. He just wasn't made for it.

But antagonizing? Oh Hell Yes.

Otto smiled wryly at her last comment. So his reputation preceded him. "Ya got me there."

"Nobody said you couldn't," Aria replied pointedly. "Look at it this way. What do you think would happen if someone else pissed one of them off, then you approach them later with the same thing? They're already suspicious and chances are they aren't going to react kindly. They might lash out. And boom goes the cover. Who would take the fall?"

The division leader crossed her arms, shifting her weight from one foot to the next. "Look at it this way. If you lot pulled your information together and marked who you've spoken to... Well, let's just say we'll have less injured on our side, and we'd be less likely to have our cover blown over a... misunderstanding, shall we say?"

Aria gestured towards him. "You've gotten yourself in Caelius' sights. If I were you, I'd start making plans and at least give the impression that you're working on something, y'know? Just be sure to make your findings available for the rest of us. Death isn't the only Division with an interest in Halloween's citizens."

"So I gotta actually.. collaborate." Otto asked grimly, seeming to deflate. "I don't like talkin' to people." It was a miracle he had friends at all. But if he wanted to live to see another day, he needed to try.

He paused, slightly widening his gaze. s**t. He was whining again. Whining to another Division Lead.

<so broken, muffin.>>

"Yer right." He mumbled lowly, the bitter taste of reality making itself known day after day.

"Oh no, collaboration. What a horrible little thing," Aria replied sarcastically as she rolled her eyes. "No wonder you survived this long, you did what I did. Look, you can't avoid others forever. Trust me." Aria shook her head, adding, "If it's that much of a problem, set up some sort of database that people can add to, like a wiki or something. Might score you some breathing room from Caelius once he sees that you're doing something."

Why yes. Yes collaboration was indeed horrible. And apparently avoiding it and people had at least saved his a** so far. But likely not anymore, now that the spotlight was on him. Damn, and his plan had been going so well. If you could call avoiding everything a real plan.

"That sounds more my speed." Otto commented on the database idea. "How do I get access to somethin' like that, though? Are there runic computers out for loan 'r what?" Don't tell him he had to hand write and go door to door.

His question brought a surprised stare from Aria. "You... don't know? You don't know." She shook her head and sighed. "Somehow you made it to a hunter and you don't know the in's and out's of your own division. I just... you know what?" Aria grinned at him. It wasn't a nice grin; it was the sort of smug grin that a superior bestows on a subordinate when they're about to give them a task they know that they won't like. "Rather than me telling you, I think this will give you a good excuse to - brace yourself - make social contact with others in your division. Surely you can handle something as teeny as that." That wasn't a question.

Oh Crap on a stick. That was not a good grin. Otto grimaced as Aria gave him a "suggestion". A fairly indefinite suggestion.

The teen witheld the urge to groan, wallowing in his self pity. "Yeah.. I'm sure I can manage it... seein' as its so teeny." Others in his Division?

. . . That meant Gale too.

Nooooo......

"Good," Aria replied. "I'd hate to hear about what would happen to you if Caelius demands a status report and hears that you haven't done anything, you know? You could use a golem to go to Halloween even without being able to use your arm. Lance does it."

The division leader paused, adding, "Lance is my assistant. You know, the hunter permanently stuck in a wheelchair? If you find you can't move your arm after going into a golem, I suggest you talk to him and find out how he can walk in a golem despite being paralyzed."

"Any other questions or do you think you're good?"

s**t that was right. He'd done nothing since getting his a** kicked, much like he'd sat around before. He was always waiting for a purpose to be handed to him on a silver platter, or an island wide mission to diverse attention from his non existant productivity.

While Otto was sure his arm would be fine after a week or two, it did mean it served him no use while it healed. A golem mission would likely negate the handicap, much like it did for Lance.

"I think I'm good." Otto murmured, torn between being grateful for Aria's advice, and unhappy of facing the fast approaching truth of his predicament. He needed to actually try. No more waiting and procrastinating.

"I don't owe ya no favours, do I? I already owe Sam and that's one favour too many."
