Destiny City's First Annual Job Fair

The ballroom of Destiny City's JW Marriott, a popular spot for various sorts of conventions, has been converted into Destiny City's First Annual Job Fair! There are booths stationed all around the large, sprawling area and it is loaded with an insane amount of people shuffling about. Who knew that so many people were looking for jobs? Is the job market bad these days?

There are many booths to be found and worth checking out! But what booth do you head to first?

Players hosting booths may roleplay their NPC bosses as well, even if not listed below. Note that it may be helpful to quote the player or bold the names of booths your character is visiting. If you haven't signed up yet, you may do so here.

Destiny City Job Fair: Booth Listings
Bookwyrm, booth hosted by Jessie Haze (Fiction1119)
A quaint and whimsical bookstore with a WIDE selection of books, looking for someone who loves books and colorful surroundings.

The Carnival of Souls, booth hosted by Chester Michael Riley (Lithia_Brandon)
A brand new park just opening to the public and a little understaffed. Good hours, fun atmosphere and great pay. Friends and family of employees visit free and receive vouchers for games and food. Company encourages happy employees, and is more about providing the service of fun than making some sort of sale.

DC Complections, booth hosted by Hannah Williams (Sylent Nyte)
DC Complections is a privately owned and operated company located in the posh part of town that caters to the upper-class citizens of Destiny City. While the owner is awfully snooty (and OCD), she pays extremely well and will do events for her co-workers for free.

Destiny City Hall, booth hosted by Avery Hollister (Indubitably)
Destiny City Hall, the headquarters of city politics for Destiny City, is looking for entry-level employees and interns to assist the various city departments, and even desirable roles aiding the city's elected councilmen and women! Although you may never meet the mayor, a seat in city hall would be one hot ticket on your resume and make some valuable connections.

Destiny City Library, booth hosted by Anthony Darrow (Lithia_Brandon)
It's the large library in the middle of the city. It is three stories tall and has its own knight protecting it.

Destiny City Police Department, booth hosted by Sergeant Pete Henry (NPC)
The Destiny City Police Department is using this job fair to recruit public service officers who would take on cold cases while the trained officers work on the in-progress and more critical crimes. There are a lot of strange happenings going on in Destiny City, but the small cases may be delegated to these public servants. Those interested in a trained career in law enforcement are welcome to approach the booth as well to discuss training programs.

Fancy A Change, booth hosted by Marlin Joanson (litian)
A glass fronted independent costume shop, framed in dark green and three rows of green tiles running along the bottom. The shop windows are set up with costumes which follow themes e.g. a witches theme, fairy theme, pirate theme etc. The shop stocks various costumes and costume accessories such as wigs, vampire teeth, fake noses etc.

The Gold Star Casino and Resort, booth hosted by Leo Torres (Holy Blasphemy)
The Gold Star Casino and Resort is expanding, and thus has many open positions in its casino, hotel, restaurants, club, and spa. Extra perks for employees includes hotel and dining discounts, and automatic access to planned club.

Hindsight, Karaoke Bar & Lounge, booth hosted by James Battes (NPC - Kaori_luv)
Hip and happening lounge that offers a karaoke stage and decent sized dance floor when one can come relax or let out some steam with a drink and a possible a session of belting out your favorite tunes at the top of you lungs.

Mad Marxz Skate Shop, booth hosted by Feliks Vavrik (LP)
Mad Marxz Skate Shop is a small business owned by Marxz. It's your typical skate shop with skate boards, roller blades, quads, clothing brands often used by skaters, shoes with brands such as Vans and Converse, and other essential skater needs. (Sometimes in the winter Marxz can be found to have Ice Skates.... sometimes) The atmosphere is energetic and fun.

Padma's Bouquet, booth hosted by Krishna Dhawan (Quicksilver the Archangel)
Padma's Bouquet is a locally owned flower shop. Although technically a "flower shop," the store sells all sorts of plants. Some examples (aside from flowers) include ferns, vegetable plants, and cacti. All of them are grown on site, so the very back of the store is basically a mini-green house. Padma's Bouquet also offers materials for growing and maintaining plants, everything from seeds to soil to tools.

Phina Fiona's, booth hosted by Seraphine Lace (Kaori_luv)
A lovely little boutique in downtown Destiny City, that caters to all kinds. Selling the latest in designer names and brands as well as the little know or up and coming. Very affordable and friendly environment. Second location opening soon.

Preparation H Arena, booth hosted by Nick Jameson (NPC)
Preparation H Arena, the city's famed arena sponsored by America's favorite hemorrhoid cream, is looking for part-time and full-time help! Home of the NBA's Destiny City Wonderbolts and the NHL's Destiny City Motherpuckers and frequent venue for large capacity concerts, the arena is looking for service positions including box office operators, snack vendors, box seating concierge and waiters, and Zamboni operator. They are even hiring interns to assist in venue management as well as accommodate the athletic teams, performers, and high profile guests.

Slave to the Grind, booth hosted by Jude Harrow (and be blue)
Slave to the Grind is a small, privately-owned, non-chain coffee shop that caters primarily to DCU students. There are only five or six tables inside, and only a couple of positions for hiring, but as the summer begins, it's open for recruiting seasonal workers to fill in! It's a friendly atmosphere but also hard-working. Generally looking to hire at least HS seniors, but exceptions have been made before. Ahem.

Sugar Shanty, booth hosted by Richard Moreau (ChibiGingi)
Sugar Shanty is a privately owned candy store, with a very whimsical design and Willy Wonka-esque facade. Not only is all of the candy in the store hand-made by either Richard or his other confectioner chefs, but he is also investing into catering for events and parties, which would open more positions in the future. Very laid back and friendly atmosphere.

WKDC Channel 6 News, booth hosted by Tag Swagger (Silent Spy) and Hannah Williams (Sylent Nyte)
WKDC Channel 6 News is always looking for new talent and help around the studio for its morning, afternoon, evening and late-night broadcasts and reports. It is a small and local news station, not a major network, but has a strong following among the local residents in the area.

Jude was dressed to the nines, down to the shiny white tips of his shoes and the hat tipped sideways on his head. Green and gold, the suit and the tie and the shirt were all perfectly coordinated to go along with the green and gold apron that had been handed to him by his boss on the way out the door.

Across the front it read, in clear letters, Slave to the Grind. The picture of a coffee cup beneath was clip art, something nabbed off the internet and, poorly, traced for their logo. It was jaunty, a bit lopsided, but something about it was friendly all the same. It looked cheap. It looked local. It did the job.

Just like Jude. He sat behind his booth with a travesty of a coffee maker and sample cups out in front of him, alternated with tiny pieces of home made cookie. Chocolate chip. Oatmeal Raisin. White Chocolate Macadamia. All labelled carefully with the note May Contain Nuts.

He looked just a little uneasy, fingers laced together and fidgeting, as he took in the door and watched for interesting potential employees.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Veer was not the type of person he was looking for, certainly. In fact, he hardly looked like he was there looking for a real job. No suit and tie here, no business or even business casual. Instead he had his old flame-toed boots on, laced in wild colors and battered all to hell. These were definitely boots meant for kicking a**, and it seemed more likely that's what he was here to do.

While others might choose to look at the booths like they were shopping Veer, instead, looked at them with a faint sense of amusement, a troublesome teenager who looked like he was about ready for trouble. Maybe it would have been different if there'd been even one booth representing a tech company, or a company producing games, or hell, even someone looking for band roadies --

Delilah had spent nearly all night and most of the morning trying to figure out what she was going to wear to this job faire thing she had heard about. Of course she could have gone full on business with a suit but she worried she would come off too high strung. Jeans and causal were out because she appeared like she didn't care. Low and behold, when she had finally walked out of her room satisfied with her appearance, it had been more business than anything.

But now as she moved through the booths at a slow pace, Delilah was too busy searching for something that could give her experience in her field. Of course she knew that any designer would not be searching around here to get hundreds of would-be fashionistas flocking to them but just something where she could use her design eye would be welcome. Last thing she wanted was to end up a waitress at the local dive.

It was when she spotted the name Phina Fiona's that she stopped and nodded. Giving a deep breath, she headed that way to see what the place was all about.

Seraphina sat at her booth with her, which was set up much like the register area of her store only lacking a register. An IPad sat on the left corner secured to the booth on display for use, polyvore is currently what it displayed just as was at the store. On the right corner was the same on the screen displayed pictures of the store front, her girl and boys working, dressed to impress, several of them dressing mannequins in the seasons latest fashions. There were application laid out with pens handy for filling them out and a raffle box oddly enough for a gift certificate to the store, which anyone could enter. Just a little something extra Phina thought nice to add.

Phina herself sat looking, he red hair tumbling over her shoulder in waves. She wore light emerald miny skirt with a sleeveless white sheer tucked in, a black corset underneath and a pair of simple black wedges. She of course wore jewelry and a small amount of nude makeup.

When Delilah walked up she gave small smile and stood from her seat. "Hello . Interested in possibly stepping into the fashion industry with Phina Fiona's?" He expression was a curious, but professional one, she wanted to definitely draw more people in. With her new store opening up, she need full second staff.

So this was, like, an assignment. Given to him by They-That-Stole-His-Clothes, General-Kings She-Male Trap and Ninja-Smurf. He was supposed to recruit people, or employ people, or something like that. Sounded business-y. Responsible. Leo didn’t do responsible. He did, however, do flashy, and parties, and attention-hoarding, so setting up a table in a sea of tables and trying to attract people? Challenge accepted.

The Gold Star Casino and Resort’s booth was housed within a yellow canopy tent, decorated with strings of lights and a miniature red carpet that led to the application table. The boring, standard table had been tossed out in favor of a folding poker table, with Leo claiming the dealer’s spot. Adding to the aesthetic appeal were four well-groomed, attractive people, dressed according to Leo’s specifications: the two girls in fitted pencil skirts and cleavage-bearing blouses, the two guys in pressed pants and button-ups with the sleeves pushed above the elbows and the top two buttons undone.

Inappropriate? Exploitative? Unprofessional? Maybe. But if Leo was going to spend hours sitting in a booth instead of a club, then he was going to being his eye candy with him. Besides, this was a casino; gaudy was the name of the game.

Speaking of clubs, everybody liked clubs, so Leo had instructed his eye ca- his assistants to give out coupons for free drinks at the casino’s lounge. He’d also had a stack of playing cards in boxes that had been custom-printed to include the casino’s HR department information; this had the added bonus of providing Leo a way to amuse himself.

Hitting Play on the iPod, Leo’s gave a self-satisfied nod as Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” began to play from the speakers set up in the tent. He grabbed a deck of card and started shuffling the cards.

“ Let’s get this party started.”

Krishna was hoping to get a few part-timers to fill in at the shop. He could not truly afford--although he could have used--any full timers. He had not dressed formally for the event. Instead, he wore the uniform that he would expect his employees to wear. A polo shirt with solid colored slacks. The teal apron bearing the company's logo. Sensible shoes. He had chosen a pale lavender shirt today instead of his usual white to reflect the season, but the brown pants and shoes were his normal choices.

The table was rather barren. A stack of applications. A stack of pens. A banner that wrapped around the table and announced the title of his flower shop. And a loan, perfect orchid to show the quality of his work. Now he just needed to wait for someone to approach.

Holy Blasphemy

There were more reasons than he could really count that drew Veer over to the booth -- and it was the coupon that made him stay, thrust into his hand by an attractive girl in a skirt just two hairs too long. Well. Too long in his opinion, at least. He turned it over between his fingers, grinning just a bit and taking it as the complement it was. Did he look like he was over 21? Well. He'd managed to get into clubs before....

He paused at the poker table, though, and raised his eyebrows as he took it in, swiping the collapsed mess of his mohawk back out of his face. Beneath it his eyes were amber, bright, amused. Focused, for the time being. Sober and definitely into cards.

Computer programmers usually were good at math and statistics. They also counted well.

"What are you hiring, exactly?" It came out dry, with a gesture to the men busting out of their shirts, coupon still clutched between two black-tipped fingers. His eyes didn't follow. They stayed on the cards. He wanted to see if this was going to be poker or [oh god please] Blackjack. "More automatons?"
PostPosted: Fri Jun 07, 2013 10:01 pm
“ What aren’t we hiring?” He asked, spreading his arms wide. “ The list those HR women gave me was so long, I think they were trying to melt my brain.”

It was partially true. There had been a fairly long list of open positions, but Leo had tuned out after a minute because, well, BORING. They talked about resumes and qualifications and blah blah blah; Leo had nodded along while mentally day-dreaming of an Arabian Fabio.

Leo finally stopped shuffling the cards and eyed Veer before dealing out the cards that would start a game of Blackjack.

“ If you want to join my little menagerie I’d be happy to add you, but sadly I don’t think that’s what you’re after.” He pouted for emphasis, but quickly flipped it to a grin. “ It’s mostly hospitality gigs, but if you’re not people-broken, I’ve got some behind-the-scenes stuff to.”

Veer settled his hip against the counter and, in all honestly, he didn't look like he was people broken. No. He looked like he preferred to kick people in the face, or like he spent all his time hidden behind a computer screen and mostly interacted with them through Skype. The latter, maybe, because it was true, except that these days he didn't even seem to be doing that much. He flipped hair back out of his eyes and watched the cats, amused.

"Like what, security guards?" Security guards who might be looking for troublemakers just like him, in fact. The idea had a surprising amount of appeal, except that it might mean working nights. Working nights, in turn, meant no World of Warcraft, meant no time spent in the company of hot young female roommates, meant -- well, he strummed fingers against the table and absently kept track of the cards. "Or are we talking system managers and policy makers?"

Jessie knew that setting up her booth properly would be the best way to get others interested but she wasn’t sure how to go about it. It wouldn’t be as flashy as the casino booth or as minimalistic as the… gardening?... booth. She knew it would have to show her style and yet make it clear that it’s a bookstore so it was with some worry that she put the finishing touches up. She had borrowed one of those quick and light metal bookcases from a friend and stacked a wide selection of books on it after setting it behind her seat, if anything it would provide her with things to read. Then a few more books scattered and stacked on the table with a model of the Apollo capsule as a ‘paper weight’. A red dragon looked over her shoulder as it acted as a bookend for the books on the case. And Garcon, the hip high statue of a French waiter with a tray was at the side of the booth table holding the business cards for the store. Other then the cards only the table itself had the store logo on it.

‘The Bookwyrm’ was blazened across the front of the crisp white tablecloth with the shop’s namesake, a little green dragon, curled up with a book lounging over top of the ‘wyrm’ part of the logo, his tail actually made the leg of the Y. She was as ready as she would ever be, now if only someone stopped by even if to see what her shop was all about.

Taye showed up the job fair ready, willing, and able. He wore a navy blue wool blazer over a white dress shirt, blue jeans, and black dress shoes. He carried around a black attache case filled with scads of resumes.

Even though he was dressed business casual, he couldn't help but wonder if he was overdressed. While he didn't want to come off a slob to a potential employer, he didn't want to come off as desperate either. He could definitely use a paying job, after all. Not that he minded volunteering. He loved it, actually. But his savings were running dry.

He looked around at all the booths and wondered where he should go first. He really wasn't picky at this point. He couldn't afford to be. Work was work and money was money.
litian

His gaze settled on Fancy A Change. He remembered he had bought a Halloween costume there before. He thought that was as good a reason as any to start his job search here. "Hello, sir, what positions are you hiring for today?"
PostPosted: Sun Jun 23, 2013 1:12 pm
“ Security, maintenance, maybe some tech support. Higher positions will be filled internally.”

Once he figured out who to promote, that was. The HR department had plenty enough harpies, he didn’t want to have to deal with any more.

“ So! I guess the big question is, are you interested? If you’re kinda-maybe-vaguely interested, one of my lovely assistants will give you a tablet and you fill out a resume to add to our electronic pile of resumes. Or, if you’re this-could-be-fun-I’ll-give-it-a-shot interested, we can skip right to the interviewing. Your choice.”

For a long time Jonah stood uncomfortably in the middle of the crowd, unmoving, as swarms of other prospective job seekers maneuvered their way around him.

No one knew that he was there—not his mother or his father or his younger sister, and certainly not his grandfather, who was disappointed in him enough as it was without Jonah making efforts (however tentative) to slip out of that man's control. It was much better to do this alone, he'd decided when he first saw that advertisements around town. He was nervous being here on his own; he could only imagine what it would have been like if he'd had his grandfather nagging at him about choices and hounding him about his future, and shouting at him for not having the appropriate conviction, as if his ambitions (or lack thereof) somehow determined his worth to or the sum of his feelings toward his family.

Of course, telling no one meant he was also attending without the benefit of advice, which meant he had absolutely no idea where he should even start. He had no previous job experience and few skills he thought he could put to good use, and therefore he had no resume. He had zero confidence in his ability to perform effectively however much he would have liked to become a valuable asset to someone somewhere, plus he felt guilty both for defying his grandfather as well as for hunting after a job someone else might need more than him.

But he wanted to get away; he wanted to be on his own instead of being dependent on his grandfather's approval (or money, which were more or less tied one within the other) for the rest of his life, and to do that he needed his own source of income other than his allowance, and to get his own income he needed a job.

So what was he good at, then? What did he like to do? And what would best allow him to utilize what minimal skills and interests he had?

Books. He liked books. Books were safe. He felt comfortable with them, with what they could do for him as well as with what they could do for other people, so maybe he should set his sights in that direction first and go from there.

With that thought in mind, Jonah swallowed down the nervousness in his throat and cautiously weaved through the crowd toward the first bookstore set-up he could find. He looked very pale and nervous standing there and mumbled a quiet, "Hello," but didn't know what else to say, so he grew quiet and sort of desperate looking in the hopes that the woman standing there would understand that the pitiful look on his face might mean he was there looking for a job.

Rofl, not the social type. If you want to call this a fin, that's cool!

It was a tough call -- Veer savvy enough to know that when the guy said 'toss it in our pile of resumes' that meant that he was probably s**t out of luck just putting his information into the system. An interview, though, meant actually sitting down with another person and having a long talk. A long, boring talk. A long, boring talk that he'd probably come out of looking like an a*****e.

Anyway, his resume was pretty good. The education was lacking, but the experience was there; tech support, tech support, system manger, developer. Even young as he was, Veer'd done pretty well for himself.

Assuming his references didn't mention the disappearance.

He hummed, fidgeted, and then held out a hand for a tablet. "I gotta go soonish, I think, just wanted to have a look. But I like casinos..."

Gambling, alcohol, half naked men and women? What wasn't there to like. He could spare the time to fill in his details, including his phone number, stumbling just a little over his address...

Job fairs weren't really Porsha's thing. She had a job, she didn't need another. Cookies, however, were another thing, and Jude had promised homemade cookies to anyway that had showed up at his booth. Somehow she didn't feel freeloading friends counted, but she was fairly certain he wasn't about to tell her no. So she had showed up, and had ignored all the other booths on her way down to the one set up for Slave To The Grind, whereupon she took a seat on the edge of the table and helped herself to a chocolate chip cookie.

A bite was taken, chewed, and swallowed before she turned a brilliant grin to her childhood friend and greeted him properly. "Sup buddy, how's things going down here?" As she was the only one currently at the booth, she was going to guess slow..
