The ceiling of Evan's dorm room wasn't at all interesting, but Evan had found himself staring at it throughout the night in between catnaps and other, much more enjoyable things. By rights, he should be exhausted enough to sleep through the end of the year--God knows he and Gnat had gotten creative enough with that pie--but he felt oddly energized. It had taken him a long while to figure out why, but in the end, it was easy: he was happy.
It was more than just the easy contentedness he usually felt that sometimes stretched a little further than that through laughter shared or bonds formed and strengthened. Right here and now, with Gnat in his arms and the memory of a fantastic night together still fresh enough to be sticky--literally, he had no idea how he was going to get the pie out of everything--he thought that Deus might be more than just a slow, painful march towards death. He had already started making it more, he realized; he had friends here, and a clear purpose, and a partner he didn't completely hate.
/Hey!/
It was absolutely better than he deserved, and he would be happy to take all of the guilt that came with it as long as he could stretch this moment out just a little while longer. Tearing his gaze from the ceiling, he turned his head enough to press a kiss to the top of Gnat's head.

As she felt the press of his lips against her head, Gnat hummed contentedly, her mind still drifting in the cottony haze of half-asleep. She snuggled closer, lips brushing the strong line of his jaw as she buried her face in his neck. This was nice, she thought distantly - only that didn't quite cover the emotional range she'd felt over the last few hours. There was contentment, yes; but also ecstasy, and something else - small, but no less surprising.
Hope.
She hadn't realized until now how apprehensive she had felt about being here. Tuck was here, and that made it a home away from home more than anything else, but she had never in her life been so far away otherwise from family and friends. She had left behind everything she was, everything that she had thought for so long had been the sum and score of her identity. And to do what? To die somewhere, lost and forgotten and ultimately alone.
Even Tuck felt somewhat distant now; here, but at the same time far away. Somewhere there was a disconnect, a gap compassion and desire to understand couldn't bridge, and it had left her frustrated and a little bitter.
But that was before, and now felt very, very different. It was hard to concentrate on such dark thoughts when she was pressed so intimately, flesh to flesh; enjoying the simple pleasure of each other's warmth and silence. Stretching slightly, she curled herself further around Evan with a contented sigh.
"Hey, you," she murmured, voice a little rough around the edges.

There was the barest hint of regret as Evan's kiss woke Gnat up, easily quashed as she responded with drowsy affection. His hand stroked gently, lazily up and down the length of her back as she pressed closer, not wanting to pull her any farther from sleep but needing the contact. All too soon, reality would reassert itself, duty and obligation along with it, and they would have to leave last night behind them. He wanted to be just a little selfish and keep Gnat in his arms as long as possible; he didn't think anyone could blame him for that. After all, with the lives they led, they had to take these peaceful moments as they came.
"Morning," Evan replied, just above a whisper so as not to shatter the tranquility. "Sleep okay?"

"When y'let me," she quipped back quietly, smiling.
And then, she couldn't help herself - she lifted the covers just a tad and peeked down the line of their intertwined bodies.
She blushed. Yep, uh. Yeah.

A slow smile spread over Evan's face as he recalled how little sleep they had let each other get in favor of other, more exciting activities. "Sorry," he replied, completely unapologetic.
He raised his head a little as he felt the covers shift, following Gnat's gaze along the length of their bodies. Hot damn, was his first thought. "Tell me we didn't get any pie down there," was his second.

Gnat blushed harder, but leaned in to let her lips brush against his ear.
"You want me t'go down there an' check?" she murmured.

Evan's grin turned a little goofy at the edges at the sensation of Gnat's breath against his ear, and a lot goofy at what she actually said. He turned his head to face her, taking a moment just to look. She was beautiful to him, pie and all.
He raised a hand to stroke her cheek with sticky fingers before tilting his head towards hers, eliminating the mere inches separating them. He kissed her softly, nothing more demanding than the gentle press of lips. When he pulled back, it was only far enough for words to slip between them. "I kind of want you however I can get you," he admitted.

Gnat scooted down a little, letting her lips and teeth trail down his lips, chin, throat, and finally collarbone.
"You can have me any way you want me," she informed him in a low murmur before disappearing under the sheets.
She was just checking for pie, of course.

Much, much later, Evan was the one drifting in and out of sleep. He was actually kind of tired, which was good, but he liked the feeling of Gnat in his arms, and he wouldn't be aware of it if he was sleeping. Also, they were still sticky--more so now than before, even--and Evan wasn't sure if he was stuck to the sheets or not. So many trivial problems, none of which really mattered. He was happy, for the moment, and Gnat hadn't gotten up and left at any point before, during, or after, so that was a good sign too. He pressed another kiss to the top of her head--and she was tall enough that it wasn't a stretch, and that was a good thing too--and mumbled, "Your hair tastes like pie."

"Yeah? Well. Your, uh."
She blushed.
"You um, taste like pie too."

Evan may have blushed a little, too. "I don't think I'll ever be able to look at a pie again and keep a straight face. Not that that's a bad thing," he clarified, just in case the past countless hours hadn't been proof.

"Uh-huh," she responded, grinning. She laid a gentle kiss on his collarbone, before trying to lift her head, but her hair was stuck in parts to the pillow and sheet.
"Sorry 'bout the mess."
She yawned, jaw creaking.
"What time is it?" she finally asked. She was comfortable and warm, and extremely loathe to get up; but she also didn't want Tuck to come banging down Evan's door or something equally awkward - not that he would. Actually, he had seemed pretty okay with the whole thing. This realization had her burrowing deeper into the covers and slipping an arm under his, pressing against his chest with a contented sigh.
"Nevermind, it don't matter."

Evan didn't even want to think about the state of his sheets, his blanket, his bed...the inside of his door...various patches of carpet...parts of the walls...
Okay, maybe he did want to think about it. "Totally worth it," he said. He'd be cleaning for days, but each sticky stain would be washed away with a grin as he remembered how it had gotten there in the first place.
What he didn't want to think about was the hour, which was only growing later the longer they laid in bed. Time existed even within their cozy little cocoon of blankets and sheets. "Think I'm supposed to be on pod duty later," he admitted with a reluctant grumble.

"Oh." Wow, his plans sounded a lot more important than hers.Gnat allowed herself a small frown, her first of the morning.
"I was uh. I was gonna go punch things," she muttered sheepishly.
"We should probably go take, like, a shower or somethin'."
Despite her words, she continued to not move. She was very good at it.

"Punching things sounds a lot better than watching the pod people sleep," Evan said. He wouldn't mind watching Gnat punch things. Maybe shirtless, again. It would probably be even better now that he knew what she looked like without even the sports bra she had been wearing last time. Mmm.
His lips curled into a lazy grin as his hands wandered aimlessly, stroking over her hair, her shoulder, down her side. "Eventually," he agreed. "Think you might need help washing your back? Get all those hard to reach places, y'know."
