Fantome had been freed from his duty to his daughter. He had managed to track down Tsunami and spend just a little bit of time with her. During that meeting he had discovered what it was that had kept his granddaughter from being able to return home to her mother and her herd. Now with the message passed on that Stormfall was looking for her Fantome was certain that Tsunami would eventually return home. His mind was in a maelstrom though. He'd been horrified to learn about the pact that Tsunami had made with a skinwalker.

The angeni could not fathom how it was at all possible that Tsunami had fallen for the mind games of another. Now was not the time to think about it though. That would be saved for a later time. For now he needed to keep his wits about him.

The stallion eyed the ground beneath him and touched down with nary a sound. Stealth was the word of the hour now as he began to hunt around a familiar stretch of forest. It was here that he had met that strange blue mare. She had told him that she was a guard. He wanted to test just how much territorial instinct she had in her.

Galla Sile's faced the dying sun. The resplendent colours reminding her of him. She remembered his big body cradled to her, his hair like the orange of the evening. The butterfly like wings that fluttered, the soft way he said her name...

Gone. Simply gone.

She remembered the rising panic in her body as he pulled away, the hot flashes of pain that felt like tiny nails be.ing driven into her heart. She remembered standing there, knowing that she could force him to stay--that she could keep him forever and love him forever. She could cage him up like a bird, and maybe he would still sing for her. Maybe he wouldn't notice the gilded cage....

But she knew he would.

When she looked into his eyes, and thought of sunrises and sunsets spent never leaving the nest, of soft laughter and a heart filled with love. She realized that she couldn't hold him in chains to stay with her.

And yet, she couldn't go with him--honour and duty forbade it. Even if it didn't, she couldn't leave behind her sisters or her daughters. She couldn't leave them even though she loved him so desperately that the idea of being without him felt as though it would kill her.

But she had stood there, released him and told him he was free. Let him know that once he went, he could never return. Her heart hoped he'd stay, that he'd bear the chains because of her.

His wings opened, and then he was gone.

The foals had come later, some secret growing in her that she hadn't even known. Children who would never know their father and a father who would never know his children, never know the life they could have had.

She could feel the prickling burn of tears behind her eyes, she could feel the surge of feelings she couldn't quite understand--how she could both love and hate him.

Most of all, she just missed him.

The soft hoofsteps brought her out of her mind, she squeezed her eyes tightly then blinked forcing the tears to remain inside rather than without.

Her eyes settled on the big stallion as he landed, her eyes narrowed but her voice was vacant, almost soft. "Oh, it's you..."

This was not the mare that Fantome recalled meeting the time before. Certainly time had passed since they had last encountered each other but it wouldn't explain the broken mare that he now rested his gaze on. What could have happened in the amount of time that he had last seen her? Fantome wasn't one to pry into the lives of others unless they were directly connected to him. It was why he'd helped aid Stormfall in her search. She was of his flesh and blood and thus to was Tsunami.

The angeni couldn't fathom what had brought this change to the individual he'd met before. Back then she had been an angry spitfire of a mare, threatening him with capture and what seemed like imprisonment. She had also been more cunning back then too. He'd almost been fooled into thinking that she might have had word of his granddaughter. But that had only been a ruse. She'd let him leave with nary a real battle. Fantome took in the vision before him now. Something had definitely occurred. Wracking his brain Fantome went over the encounter as if it had just happened. Names had never been exchanged between them. He also recalled that manners were in order.

Executing a swift bow, Fantome lowered his head in a polite salute to the mare before returning to a more comfortable position. His wings fluttered briefly as he tucked them in alongside his back. The greeting he was going to bestow the mare with faded as he sighed. Her greeting to him lacked any real emotion. Instead Fantome found himself asking, "are you alright?"

Galla stopped herself from averting her eyes, something like that could get her killed. Years of being a guard had taught her not to turn away from someone, unless you knew that you could trust them--vipers came in many guises.

Her heart thudded on despite the pain of it that felt like it was actually breaking. She avoided the stallions question, "You're not supposed to be here. I told you before, don't you know what you've risked?"

The pain in her eyes was evident as she looked up at him, "Don't you know that to come back would mean you're my prisoner? That I can keep you as mine forever? Do you not fear chains? Do you not think I'm capable of taking you back to my people? Or do you think that I should let you go too?"

Her voice broke on the too, and a keener ache started in her chest. She realized her slip and stopped at him staring in an unusually ungraceful manner.

So the mare wasn't alright. It seemed as if something inside her had broken. Fantome paid moderate attention to the threats laden in the words "capture" and "prisoner" but something about the mare's leaden way of speaking had Fantome wondering if she could even muster the will to attempt to capture him and take him back to her sisters. The stallion recalled the terms from their first meeting with clarity. The blue mare, in more ways than one, looked as if her life had drained out from her. What had occurred in the time that he'd been gone?

That question was answered as Fantome went over the rest of her words. Had she let someone go, someone that she had captured? Why would she have done that?

Fantome huffed before letting his wings spread out. "Your words sound like they come from a place of heartache and regret. I have no real connection to these feelings. I have never found someone that wished to remain for long in my company. Thus I cannot begin to imagine what you are feeling right now. I care not if you are trying to scare me away ..."

Fantome trailed off before letting his gaze dart around.

Galla felt the flush rising in her cheeks, and again she stopped herself from looking away or averting her eyes. "One doesn't know heartache until they have felt it," her voice was soft and pained. She did not deny his guess, she'd practically given herself away.

She had never realized how deep an ache of longing could be. She had thought she missed her father--a stallion she never knew--but it was nothing to knowing and loving someone, to having met the one who was leaving. When Adrian had left her, when she had given him his freedom at the cost of her feelings, she had hoped that he would stay. But chains were too much for him.

Perhaps she had deserved it too? How could one love someone's free spirit and then wish to bind it without repurcussions?

She looked up at Fantome as a tear glided down her face, "Tell me, am I that much changed from when we first met? Am I so diminished?" She blinked her eyes slowly, "How my sisters must mock me for losing my heart over some stallion!"

Fantome shrugged in response to the mare's question. He did not understand her society so thus who was he to offer a comment. Instead the stallion sighed and took in the mare's features. His attention first went to her hooves and found that instead of hooves this mare had clawed feet. That was interesting. Fantome's gaze took in the decorations that adorned the mare's body before noticing her wings. How strange was it to find a mare that had what looked like to very different set of wings to call her own.

Fantome glanced around and continued to note this mare before noticing the tear that was almost hidden from his eyes. With a slight movement Fantome moved toward the mare and gently brushed his wing along side her face. The move was done gently and the stallion moved a step away. "Why should you take their mocking? They have not cast you out as of yet, have they?"

The angeni didn't understand the mare's apparent pain but the emotions that she was expressing was moving something inside of him. "You are changed but I don't think you are diminished in the least. You've learned a powerful lesson. This feeling will pass and you will come back stronger than ever."

Galla felt the soft brush of his feathered wing against her cheek that brought back other half forgotten caresses. Where he had wiped one tear, a dozen more fell down. She blinked her eyes.

"A powerful, powerful lesson," she agreed. "They do not mock me. But my love for a stallion is not something that my Flock does. We do not just love one, but many. And I loved him most of all, he and he alone."

She tossed her unruly mane. "I'm a warrior of my people, I defend my Sisters from harm. They would not mock me, but my ways in this aren't theirs."

She looked at him, hesitatingly, "And did you find her? The mare you sought? And what has brought you back here? Curiosity despite my warning?"

Fantome caught the sight of more tears escaping after he had brushed the single one away with his wingtips. As sure as he was of himself he knew that to repeat the gesture a second time probably would not have been welcomed. The Angeni of Fear let out a short sound of surprise that the mare was opening up to him. Never before, unless it was family, had one felt compelled to do so.

As he listened to the mare speak Fantome sighed. It seemed that the mare was in agreement with his earlier assessment. She had learned a powerful lesson. As she spoke about being a warrior and defending her Sisters Fantome let his gaze once again travel over her form. He nodded in a silent assessment. This mare was definitely a fighter.

As she asked her questions of him Fantome sighed. "I did find her. I am in the belief that she'll soon find her way home. Thank you for your concern. As for my return ... you could say that curiosity brought me back, even despite you warning me away."

Galla looked at him hard, trying to focus and will away the tears. "I am glad you found her," she said with a reserved voice. She had not figured what to do with him. He had come back, out of curiosity after she had bid him not to.

"Once, I let you go and told you not to return, and yet you have." She could feel the tears clearing, despite the burning behind her eyes. "I can't let you leave again. What kind of guard would I be?"

But to take him prisoner? Another unwilling captive? Was that what she really wanted to do? "You make me have to defend my honour and my word." She moved a step closer, lowering her heavy eyes.

"Was your curiosity of my people or myself?"

There was a small feeling of gratitude that Fantome felt towards the mare as she explained that she was glad that he had found Tsunami. Of course the words that came from the mare next threw him for a little bit of a loop. Although it was somewhat the result he had wanted to see. He had not really planned too far ahead after this second meeting. Fantome had garnered on the fact that he would not be allowed a second chance at freedom and yet his curiosity had gotten the better of him.

There was something so very unique about the blue mare standing before him. She was a contradiction to herself and in a sort to him as well. She spoke of not being allowed to release prisoners and yet she had apparently done that not just to him in their first meeting, but also to another stallion that she herself had seemingly caught. It was truly an odd wonder that he now let his eyes meet her hooded ones.

"You ask whether it is curiosity about your people or yourself that brought me back. It is perhaps a mixture of the two. Although I wish to say that it is mostly you that brought me back. I care not for the danger I have placed myself in in returning. You might have forgotten this but when we last parted I told you I might just come back."

Fantome let that sink in for a moment as he watched the mare close the distance between them.

She had to look up at him. He was taller than her, and his wings were mighty and sweeping. It was times like these that she felt her little height and that maybe in some way she was diminished. But the thought would hastily recede, because her heart was fiercer than any height or weight.

"Then you're mine," she said softly, looking up into his eyes with her slightly lidded ones. "And you pay me compliment to come again despite my warning, to catch sight of me or my Sisters. But I will not let you go now. I'll take you or die trying." Her voice was steady, and solid. Her eyes belying both warning and welcome.

"I'm Galla Sile, of the flock. My mother named me 'falling star'."

It was peculiar to say the least. This mare was essentially placing a claim on him like he was a possession and yet the first thing that ran through his mind was that he was honored. His wings might have twitched randomly at her words of claim but other than that he remained statue still. He had come back to sate his curiosity it was true, but perhaps even after meeting this mare for the first time she had slowly begun to ensnare him.

Fantome dipped his head in a polite manner as he finally learned the name of the mare standing before him. He listened intently to her words before giving a soft sigh. "You do not need to risk any part of yourself in taking me in. I will give you my word that I will not fight. I paid you compliment and it would be rather poor of me to tarnish that compliment by fighting you."

Fantome stretched his wings out fully before continuing, "It is a pleasure to finally learn your name ... Galla Sile, I am Fantome."

"Then you are mine, Fantome." She tasted the name on her tongue, and looked up at him. Free to take, freely hers. She didn't know what to make of him. Did he come along for her or for curiosity sake?

Only time would tell.
