It was the slow season for Weavers. No gathers were coming up and TurnOver seemed turns ago. Classes were progressing well and soon it would be test time for Apprentices and Journeymen. Which reminded the MasterWeaver that assignments had to be given out.
So much to do and never enough hours in the day to do them. He really had been distracted lately though he wasn't sure why. He wondered if a trip up north was in order to ease his thoughts. Perhaps visit relatives or friends. See when the next Conclave of Weavers was going to be...
Meekar chirped expectedly and looked towards the great wooden door. It was made of very old wood, skybroom he was sure, and had many intracate designs carved into it. Perhaps some one with a challenge for him? Emoraan could only hope. It was probably one of the teachers coming to complain or a journey approaching him with some problem or another.
A trip up north really didn't sound too bad at all. He waited for the knock so he could call out a welcome.

S'dar approached the door of the Masterweaver, listening carefully to the other side to make sure he wasn't wasting his time knocking on the door when no one was on the other side. At the sound of a firelizard chirping, the bluerider frowned. Hopefully this one was actually trained properly, unlike the majority of the Weyr flits. S'dar's definition of "trained properly", of course, was showing a healthy respect for S'dar.
Somewhere in the area stood Yormeth, and the blue seemed irate. There's too many people here, he complained. Can't you tell them to go away?
I already did, S'dar thought back as he sighed. Shards, it was annoying how many children had taken the news of a successful flight as a cue to crowd Yormeth begging to be Searched. Granted, there were a few intelligent ones out there, some actually worth Searching, but there weren't many.
Why do you need new riding gear anyway?
I have the right to splurge on new riding gear. We're in the Weyrleader's wing now, so we must look our best at all times.
But you haven't been covering up your shiny head...
Okay, you have a point. Just be quiet now so I can actually talk to the Masterweaver.
S'dar lifted his hand and knocked on the door. Perhaps it was a little more forceful than necessary, but he was trying to dismiss thoughts of his head. It wasn't shiny! It was...nicely shaved. To prevent Thread getting tangled in unnecessary hair!

And when at last the knock did come, he called out in his deep bass voice. "Come in!"
Standing up, the MasterWeaver made sure that his clothing was appropriate for any visitor. He wore his favorite dark russet tunic with a pair of black pants that tucked into the same color boots. His eyes danced with interest as he waited for the door to open.
Meekar sat on his right shoulder, looking very straight and proper. It must be a dragon rider at his door, Emoraan decided. Only a dragon could call his little one into order.

S'dar opened the door and walked in, taking as careful of a look at his surroundings as he could without seeming rude. So this was the MasterWeaver...and the firelizard was properly trained. Good, good...this meant that they could focus on the business at hand without worrying about the annoyance of chirping.
"Good day, sir...I am Bluerider S'dar. I'm here on a business request for a new riding outfit. Now that I am in the Weyrleader's wing, I need something functional and slightly better looking than the average riding gear." Throwing out that he was in the Weyrleader's wing probably wasn't necessary, but it was true, and it might make S'dar appear to have higher standing than he really did.

MasterWeaver Emoraan thought for a moment. That was right, there was a new Weyrleader in Rias. M'xan and bronze Enelth if he remembered correctly and he normally did... Giving a slight nod of his head, he moved away from the blue rider and over to his window. Normally, one of his apprentices would handle any orders that came from the weyr. He wondered how this one gained special priveledge. Not that it mattered, dragonrider's deserved much for protecting Pern.
"Curious, normally I only take senior's riders requests. No offense intended. But my journeymen normally handle such affairs while I mainly deal with Weyrwoman and Weyrleader. If I take up such a task, my price would be much higher than theirs."
Meekar flew to the window and looked down. He saw the blue outside resting and chirped happily. The flit was used to dragons who wanted his presence and he went between to see the newcomer.

S'dar nodded and stroked his beard for a moment. He could afford to purchase better riding gear now that he was...receiving payment from underlings trying to get the favor of M'xan. Technically he could get into a lot of trouble for it, but that would involve actually getting caught. Of course, he'd have to figure out a way to explain how he got the marks without bringing about the suspicions of the MasterWeaver...
"I understand, sir, and no offense is taken. I simply asked one of your apprentices who to come to for the best riding gear, and they pointed me to your door." Flattery was always good. "I've been saving up marks for a special occasion, and I figure there won't be as special of an occasion as this ever again."
Outside, Yormeth blinked in surprise at a firelizard coming from between. Seeing an opportunity to scare off any nuisance humans, he lifted his head and bugled to the flit far more theatrically than necessary. Hello, little one. the dragon said. He wasn't as prejudiced against the creatures as his rider was; Meekar was rather lucky he came to Yormeth and not S'dar!

"I have crafted gear for others as well as fine clothing. Vests tend to be my specialty." There was something that unnerved the MasterWeaver about blue rider S'dar. But he could not deny a man his craft, especially when he had the marks to pay.
Outside, Meekar settled not too far from the dragon quite happy to be welcome. Sending thoughts of happiness and curiousity, his eyes whirled most quickly with questions.
Inside, the MasterWeaver considered his options and he really didn't have no reason to say no. There had been no real orders lately. Just the usual seasonal stuff. "What type of gear are you talking about? A specific material or pattern?"

S'dar pondered his options, glad that the MasterWeaver had bought his explanation. It wasn't entirely true; he had been saving his marks. Just as long as he didn't call them hard-earned, he was not telling any lies. "I'd like a standard jacket and a vest. I'd prefer, if possible, for you to incorporate a blue dragon into the design somehow, perhaps on a pocket in the front of the jacket and vest. Yormeth is outside if you want to see his specific color before I leave."
Little did S'dar know that Yormeth was getting aquainted with the MasterWeaver's firelizard. The old dragon would have smiled if he were capable of smiling as the firelizard's thoughts cheered him up. I'm Yormeth, little one. Who is yours, I wonder?

Meekar flew closer and settled almost on Yormeth's great claws. Staring up, the little brown fell over and chirped in surprise. He sent images of Emoraan and much love.
"Wherhide, I suppose." The MasterWeaver murmured. "Perhaps a darker brown with blue. I need Moranis for such coloring."
He looked up, eyes intent on his customer. Studying the man for a long minute and then looking out the window in the direction of the weyr. Though he was agreeable to the task at hand, S'dar gave him such a strange feeling. "You know, for the Weyrleader's riding gear alone I charged 50 marks. But he had a full outfit-pants, vest, jacket and cap. Though with a design, it will cost more than normal."

The blue dragon was the picture of calm as the little brown approached ever closer; unlike some dragons, he actually liked the little ones. Ah...you are the MasterWeaver's? Yormeth guessed. There weren't any other humans around that he noticed, and S'dar had occasionally complained to him about only the important and the lucky being able to get a firelizard. I think S'dar is upset with him, but I don't know why. Humans really should talk to us more often.
S'dar was also the picture of calm, though inside he was not. The way the MasterWeaver kept staring at him was rather unnerving, and 50 marks? That was a full years worth of...*cough* wages. "Perhaps merely a nice jacket would suffice. My old gear is not worn, and I doubt anyone would look further than my jacket." At least, one would hope not.

There was something definately off with the man. But he was glad he quoted a price higher than the truth. He actually normally only charged 40 marks for well made gear. A nice jacket would not be a strain on his resources.
"Twenty marks for the jacket with a blue dragon on the pocket and back. It will take a couple of sevendays and you can have it before the Fall. I think there will be one last Gather before the Fall starts for you to show it off. Fair?"
Meekar crooned and sent happy images of the MasterWeaver and also of Moranis. He chirped curiously as the dragon and then took off spiralling around his head. There were more images of other lizards and banners.

Yormeth quickly gave up trying to watch the firelizard as he moved about, and instead concentrated on the interesting images he was being sent. More potential friends, and pretty banners...it was a shame he and S'dar couldn't come more often. I'm glad S'dar came now, the blue said.
S'dar stroked his beard for a moment, for the effect of it. "A deal, sir. And a great pleasure doing business with you." He said as he reached into his pocket. "Would smith marks suffice?" He found that smith apprentices were among the easiest to manipulate into giving him marks, as he was a smith apprentice before he Impressed Yormeth.

The brown came back down from his flight. He leaned towards his owner's window, eyes changing slightly in color getting a very light red tinge towards their outer edges. But it was not enough to completely set off the little lizard's mood. Trilling happily, Meekar let the big blue know he was happy that the dragon was here.
Inside, Emoraan thought for a moment. He was good friends with the MasterSmith and would querry about this particular rider. Outwardly, he held out his large hand and waited. "It is a deal, Smithmarks are valued here.. We shake and then one of my apprentices will write up the contract. Signed by both of us and witnessed as Tradition."

The blue watched the flit fly toward the window, and noted the brown's response. I'm glad to be here as well. You truly are a nice little one.
"We shake," S'dar said as he took the MasterWeaver's hand and shook it, relieved that for the moment he had seemingly gained the other's trust. "Of course. There is nothing quite as important as Tradition. It's what keeps us alive, right?"

"Perhaps, it helps us but it does not completely keep us. All creatures big and small make adjustments in order to survive a threat." Emoraan let go of the man's hand and then gave him a slow nod. The deed was done and hopefully his man would be out of his hair soon.
"After you go to my apprentice and write the contract, I shall take your measurements."
The brown settled on a ledge near the blue dragon. He preened at the compliment and sent strong feelings of happiness at Yormeth.
