There was only so long that Sophie could keep all of her balls in the air. Considering that she was trying to go to college, volunteer, and hunt superheroes at night, it was only a matter of time until her work slipped. She missed a couple of homework assignments and got a less-than-stellar grade on a test. It wasn't enough to put her at risk of failing the class, but it was enough to make her worry about her final grade, once she could focus long enough to realize what was going on. If her GPA fell too much, her mother would never let her hear the end of it.

Sometimes, having a mother who taught at her college sucked. It was the main reason she had gone to Sovereign Heights. But of course, that wasn't enough.

After discussing things with her professor, she was assigned an extra credit project. No problem! Except that she was also assigned a partner for this project, a classmate she'd never talked to before. Slightly more of a problem. Sophie had shot him an email, arranging to meet in the library. Which was where she waited, flipping through her economics textbook, wondering for the ninth time why she was even taking this class.

"Oi, You're Sophie, right?" The tall, lean man with blue braids said as he approached the girl at the library, a flavor of Britain in his accent. Elijah thought he remembered her from class, so this was probably the girl he was supposed to meet. With his braids tied back and a nice sweater paired with his jeans, he looked well-dressed and studious. Since this wasn't someone he knew well and he'd need to be working with her, he figured a good first impression wouldn't hurt anything.

"You got here early. If I'd known, I would have gotten here earlier too." He offered her a brilliant smile, hoping she would be easy to work with at the very least. Friendly was always better, but he could live with manageable just to get this bloody project done. This class was such a bore... it was hard to put his all into it.

Sophie looked up. And up. And up some more. "Wow, you're really tall!" It was unusual for her to blurt things out like that, but it was also unusual for her to meet anyone who was significantly taller than she was, being just a hair under six feet tall herself. She stood, just to confirm that he was as tall as he looked, and whistled, but didn't press the issue further. Over the years she'd heard her fair share of "how's the weather up there?" and similar jokes, and had no desire to inflict them on anyone else.

His appearance and accent made him memorable, and Sophie could easily remember him from the class, which made it easier to speak to him. "Elijah, right? Don't worry about it. I had some other studying to do, so I've been here a while." Her own accent was subtle, and a bit harder to place. "I've been focusing on other things, so I have a lot of catching up to do."

Should she ask him if he knew anything about the crazy costumed terrorists and the superheroes who protected the city by night? It was awfully tempting, but she decided against it. The reason she was in this mess was because she hadn't focused. Now was not the time to compound her mistakes.

Which didn't mean she couldn't be friendly. "Sit down, sit down," she said, taking her own invitation. "Relax for a moment, and then we can figure out where to begin."

Her first reaction to him was actually more amusing than anything, and pretty typical. His smile widened and he laughed as he braced a hand on a lean hip.

"Yeah, I get that a lot." He chuckled, suddenly looking sheepish as he saw the pointed stares from the other people in the library. "Hey, thanks." He said as he slid into a chair opposite hers, sliding his backpack onto the table before he leaned back and slouched in his chair.

"I haf t' admit, this class is a bleedin' bore. S'why I'm in so much trouble. This project has t' rock, or I'll be taking it all over again. Hardly know where t' even start." He looked sincere about wanting to do well. It wasn't like he was all that lazy or stupid, it just... wasn't his favorite subject and that made it hard to concentrate on. Especially with his new job at the carnival making him want to do nothing, but practice for opening day.

"I bet you do," Sophie said agreeably, but she let the issue drop. Elijah's other comments were far more interesting. "It's hard to make economics enjoyable, probably. I mean, there are some people who are really passionate about it. But I think those people have the mentality that 'money makes the world go 'round.' And while I understand the statement, I can't get behind the sentiment. People make the world go 'round. Many of those people have money, but it's not the driving force. Nothing can replace human interest."

This was a subject that Sophie was passionate about. People, not econ. It took her a moment to realize that she'd had a soapbox moment, but when she did, she refused to shrug it off or appear apologetic. Why apologize for speaking up about what was important to her? "That said, I definitely don't want to take this class again either. So, what can we do to totally wow the professor?" Because that was, realistically speaking, the goal. It had to be good too, but it mainly had to be impressive.

Her little rant was met with a bit of a blank face before a huge smile appeared and he brushed it off. No use thinking too hard about it, not like it was any skin off his nose. Better to pay more attention to the stuff that was here and now and affected them. Economics would not be his first choice, but no matter.

"I dunno. Like... Something easy, but impressive, yeah? Like... Doing up a picture of the world and the way money moves in it or somfin. Or find like a game or something online where we could show how different stuff affects the game economy." Eli really had no clue where to go with this, so he threw out random ideas, hoping one caught or sparked another that would be better. Most of the stuff that was coming to mind now was all stuff that would take forever and be awfully boring. If they had to do this project, he wanted to have a least a little fun with it.

It helped, at least, that he had a cute partner. Hopefully she was the bombshell package with smarts too, 'cause he definitely needed the help more than the chance of hit on her.

Easy? Sophie wrinkled her nose. It appeared that she and her partner were on two different wavelengths.

"I'm not sure that the 'easy' route is what we want, Eli. Not if we want the professor to take this seriously. Google could probably do both of those projects for us in less than five minutes, and whatever grade we got would reflect that. No, whatever we do, it needs to show an investment of time, as well as our understanding of the material. That's the only way to convince the professor that we're worth the extra credit."

It was easy to dismiss ideas, but Sophie didn't really have any of her own, and that was hard to admit. She bit her lip and flipped through the economics textbook on the table, hoping it would inspire her. "Something creative would be nice," she mused out loud. "But how can you be creative with economics? I don't think this is a class where doing an art project will sufficiently convey what we've learned. And I'm not much of an artist anyway," she sighed.
