Khonvoum Pahket, stretched out his clawed feet and dug a claw into the dirt, making swirly designs that meant nothing. He felt restless, his sisters were gone and had been for day and suddenly he'd started to feel...strange.

He'd heard father whispering about the blood moon, a tunnel, a carnival, and he watched as his father counted down the days till the full moon. When it came, his father and mother headed to the cave, making it clear that they were to stay outside of it for tonight.

He had watched his mother's worried face, and his father's eager one. But he didn't focus for long, something strange was happening. His body felt colder, and his heartbeat was slowing down. The world was becoming sharper, and there at his feet out of nowhere lay a book.

Hooking a claw in the book, he flipped it open. The pages were scribbled over, but he didn't know how to read like his father. As he thought that a soft whisper started, and grew louder in his ears, a story he'd never heard before. Flipping the book shut, it stopped. Opening it, the voice began again.

He could feel his smile growing, and something was beating in his heart, a new strange rhythmm in the cold vault of his chest.

Nereus Lelantos watched his brother silently from where he was pressed into the hard-packed dirt behind some cover. He wasn't very far away from him, but Nereus had had much practice being sneaky and quiet.

Stealth was something of a game to him. He loved games, so much so that he even played one he liked to call 'Nothing But." Not only was it funny because it had the word 'butt' in the title, but it was something of a... challenge to himself. Nothing But consisted of one simple rule: Do not lie. One may think that such a game were easy, no big deal, right? Wrong! How many things happened in a day that shouldn't be shared? How many thoughts could be had that shouldn't be said aloud even if asked to repeat it without consequence? Oh, no, no, no. This was a difficult game indeed. For the one simple rule was do not lie. And that is harder than one might think.

But, of course, not lying did not mean that he was to be entirely truthful either. So Nereus felt that he got what he wanted from the situation and yet was still winning at his game. But just like his vocal obligation, Nereus also partook in hiding and sneaking about. Now this, too, was a difficult feat, but perhaps more-so for him than others. His completely pale hide didn't offer much in the way of camouflage, so he had to make do in other ways. Disguises were troublesome and often made more noise than just his body, so he avoided those as much as he could. They had their time and place, but for the most part the colt depended on silence. He could hold his body still for hours on end if he had something to focus on. In this case, this something was his eldest brother.

There was Khonvoum, not doing anything particularly interesting, but Nereus was patient, he would wait until something did happen. Afterall, mom and dad went inside, insisting that they were to stay out for the night, so what else was he to do with his time? He had an eye off on the cave because he was curious what all the talk about the moon could possibly have to do with them, but his main focus was his brother. And tonight it felt especially easy for him to hide. Perhaps the air was different, fresher in a way, or perhaps it was the moon shining so brightly that he finally had decent cover in the manner of blending into the bright rays, but something was definitely different tonight. He planned to find out what.

And he didn't have to wait too long. Out of the blue, there was suddenly a small shape at his brother's feet. He had merely blinked and there it was. What was happening? Widening his eyes, Nereus crept closer silently. Was that one of dad's books?

Nereus did not leave his hiding spot, but whispered, "You didn't steal that, did you?" It wasn't accusatory, it was a confused question. He had seen it blink into existence afterall. Was this a test that dad had set out for them?

"And the life of the ebony clock... He slammed the book shut and looked over at Nereus. He was interrupting something trans formative happening in his life, but he didn't feel anger--he felt something else. It was like some small string was drawing them closer, and closer. It was like there was a connection there with his brother that had not existed before.

The vault of his chest was cool, the heart beating slowly and evenly. "We are changed," he said the words simply understanding them and not understanding them at the same time.

"The book just came to me," he said honestly. "Mine, all mine...." He whispered, sure his brother hadn't heard the voice.

The book spoke to him and he recited the words, feeling him within the depths of his soul, they were true to him and only him all the words he'd ever meant or wanted to say...

From childhood’s hour I have not been
As others were—I have not seen
As others saw—I could not bring
My passions from a common spring—
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow—I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone—
And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone—
Then—in my childhood—in the dawn
Of a most stormy life—was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still—
From the torrent, or the fountain—
From the red cliff of the mountain—
From the sun that ’round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold—
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by—
From the thunder, and the storm—
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a dem
on in my view—

He stopped, "Don't you feel it? The darkness...the demons, everything that was lurking just beyond us before. I can see it all now! All of heaven and hell!"
