After a couple of months of working at Maize Maizier, Lydia was starting to get used to the routine. While it was true that a little bit of the shine that things had as a customer disappeared when you were behind the counter, she didn't mind. She'd learned so much already, and owed a great debt to her employers and coworkers, who'd been patient with her as she learned the ropes. There were still occasions where she wasn't sure what the protocol was, but they were few and far between. By and large, she was a solid employee, and even though she didn't get to share her passion for travel with every customer, the few that did engage her made it all worthwhile.

Still, it wasn't easy. By ten o'clock, her feet ached and her back cramped. "Just one more hour," she murmured, trying to rally her spirits. She didn't get many closing shifts, since the owners were considerate of the fact that she was still in school. But with summer fast approaching, she knew that there would be more of them in her future, and had requested this one as a sort of preparation.

Bad idea.

There was hardly anyone around- just a man who came in for tea every night, a couple finishing their dinner, the kitchen staff, and the other waiter on duty. "Do you think we'll get any other guests tonight, Mister Howl?" Lydia asked, more out of boredom than genuine curiosity.
PostPosted: Tue May 28, 2013 8:50 am

Howl was agitated. And it had everything to do with this evening shift. He was typically a daytime shift person, and now he was stuck in the middle of the evening at work rather than out and about, looking for his princess. Whoever the lowlifes were that had called out sick this evening owed Howl one daytime shift of patrols too, though it was very likely the ones who hadn't shown would never pay back the owed time.

When Howl was agitated, he didn't show many of the usual signs others did. There would be no finger tapping, no fussing, nor any eyes darting about the room in an effort to remain calm. No, his irritation tended to lead to him growing less personable. Certainly his manners were still quite present, but the warmth in his voice seemed to all but evaporate.

"Miss Sfakianos," he started, using the same amount of formality as he had a couple months prior upon Lydia's first day at Maize Maizier. "The evening shifts are rarely as busy as the daytime shifts. If anything, we will have one more customer trickle in right when we are attempting to close up for the evening."

He had better places to be than at work. This was quite a waste of time, waiting to leave like this.

Lydia had stopped worrying about the apparent distance that Mister Howl had kept. Maybe that was just the way he was. Whatever the case, she had no need to be bosom buddies with every single one of her coworkers, and he was still very pleasant. Even when he was, she supposed, tired and ready to go home, just like she was.

She would have offered to let him go and close up on her own, but that wasn't very wise. She was still the most junior employee, and hadn't been trained in locking up. Sure, it was probably easy, but what if something went wrong? Then they would both be in trouble. No, it just wasn't worth it, not for a single hour.

The man nursed his tea. The couple lingered over desserts and coffee, laughing occasionally at whatever they were talking about. Lydia rested her chin in her hand and sighed. She had been prepared for hard work, but not for total boredom.

A shadow appeared by the front door, seeming to hover outside. There wasn't enough light for Lydia to be able to make out who it was, but it looked like someone checking the menu that was posted by the door. "Perhaps our last customer has decided to come early, for the sake of everyone's sanity." Straightening up, she brushed a couple of crumbs off of her apron and started to walk to the door. If the person was still deciding whether or not to come in, maybe a warm welcome would help make up their mind.

Howl's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked over to the door. He let Lydia attend to the potential customer as he remained sulking in his odd manner.

A part of him was tempted to just leave. Certainly, he already knew that his coworker had not been trained in full about the evening procedures. It would have been completely irresponsible of him to abandon her now, especially with only about an hour before closing.

He knew all the justifications for not leaving, but that didn't make the temptation any smaller.

It just nibbled at the corners of his mind, taunting him as he watched the younger waitress make her way to welcome the customer.

Three steps away from the door, the silhouette began to become clearer. Two steps, and Lydia started to feel that something wasn't quite right. One step, and she froze, hand stretched out halfway to the doorknob. The figure outside was much larger than a person would ever be, and seemed to be covered with some sort of fur.

"Ah," she started to say. Before she could get anything else out- a question, a warning, a scream- the glass door was gone. An enormous arm reached through it, snagging a claw the size of a butter knife on Lydia's apron. Instinctively she leaped backwards, tearing her uniform, but considering what could have happened, that was a small price to pay.

Immediately her mind went to her henshin pen, safely tucked away in her purse. Which was safely stashed in the tiny room the staff used for breaks and to keep their personal belongings. The path was clear, but could she get there without anyone noticing?

A scream from one of the few remaining customers brought her back to the present moment. Before thinking about fighting, she had to get them to safety. "Everyone, get away from the door," she called, heading towards the back of the restaurant. "Mister Howl, we need to get everyone out of here!"

Many might have panicked. In fact, the scant amount of customers easily were already in the process of going the route of panic.

Howl was not the sort to panic. The moment the glass of the door had shattered, he had slipped back, out of the view of the public and out of the view of even the kitchen staff. His work uniform faded into a more regal sort of uniform of a deep navy blue color. Once he had his new outfit on, he made his way out to the dining area again.

He no longer was Howl, but instead was Nysa, Squire of Neptune. He had a rather stern look upon his face as he looked over the offending beast.

This little turn of events was going to ruin any chances of him leaving early this evening. In fact, it guaranteed that he was going to have to stay for quite a bit of extra time.

With his weapon extended, he slid himself between the offending youma and his young coworker.

"...Miss... you lead everyone out through the back.... I will keep this monstrosity occupied here..."

In spite of the gravity of the situation, Lydia had enough time to be surprised. It seemed that someone had already come to fight! "That was fast!" she commented, chancing a quick look at her would-be savior. "But next time, could you please come before the monster breaks down the door?"

Really, if this guy had been following the youma for a while- which he must've been, to arrive so quickly- it wasn't too much to ask.

"Everyone, please follow me!" For once, Lydia was glad that the restaurant wasn't too busy. It took only a few moments for her to lead the handful of diners to the back door, making a quick stop in the kitchen to inform the staff there of the situation. Once the last customer had turned the corner, she ran for the break room and pulled her pen out of her purse. "Irene A-"

Wait, it wouldn't do to yell that where other people might hear it. Mister Howl might be hiding somewhere- though she was surprised that he hadn't helped with the evacuation- and the cooks were shutting off the gas in case further damage was done. Lowering her voice considerably, Lydia tried again. "Irene Asteroid Power, Make-Up!"

Less than two minutes after Lydia had left the scene, Super Sailor Irene ran in from the back, hoping that the mysterious knight had been able to hold his own while she was gone.

The amount of movement from all the customers and the waitress fleeing the business place was enough to attract the youma's attention. The monstrous were-beast lumbered towards the commotion, only to find some bothersome teal-haired squire in the way. A snarl escaped its mouth as it pulled back a claw.

"...I would not do that..." the Neptunian squire warned in a low tone.

The warning was not taken well, with the youma soon enough lunging at the young man with its large claws.

Nysa merely bound back, weapon still extended in front of him.

It already moves slowly, no real grace... my magic won't do much...

His eyes glanced to the thick claws on the creature.

It has brute strength on its side... I think it would be at the advantage against the Quill of the Ocean... I should avoid the claws...

The youma straightened itself up, now intently focused upon Nysa. It lurched forward, once more slashing at the lad. Once more, the Squire was easily able to leap up to avoid being hit. It wasn't a matter of Nysa not being able to dodge. It was a matter of avoiding a direct hit by a deadly force.

Nysa had jumped up, but this time instead of going backwards, he went forward, swiping his own blade against the creature's face. His foot momentarily touched the creature's shoulder before he hopped over, landing on the other side.

It was there that he sensed another presence.

"...might I ask how long you have been there?" he asked quite clearly, only turning enough to see the youma, but not actually visually locate what he could assume to be an ally.

Irene was slightly out of breath from her "quick change," and swayed on her feet a bit as she inched closer. She couldn't see the knight anymore, but she could both feel and hear him. Now her supposed savior was giving her the third degree? She was in no mood for this! "Long enough," she replied somewhat testily. "I saw several people running out into an alley." This was true- Lydia had made sure to see them off before taking care of business. "It seemed wise to investigate."

That was as much of an explanation as he was going to get. Irene could see the youma shaking off its confusion, and didn't want to give it time to get its bearings. It had already done plenty of damage, thrashing about wildly. Letting it charge into either one of them would be terrible. Unless...

"Get out of the way!" With that brief warning, Irene jumped up, aiming her elbow at one of the monster's eyes. It wasn't enough to cause any real damage, but it definitely made the youma mad. Which was exactly what she wanted. Though getting whacked in the back with one of its fists was not part of the plan. Really winded now, Irene landed heavily and dropped to the floor as the youma aimed another blow at her, scrambling between its legs before it knew what had happened.

Now, she was on the same side as the knight. And, more importantly, the door. "Let's get it out of here, or we'll keep crashing into things all night!"

Though he was strained due to the current situation, he was able to offer a couple words of appreciation. "I am glad you arrived." His words didn't sound nearly as appreciative as they were meant to be. In fact, it almost sounded detached from the situation entirely.

The senshi momentarily attempted to make herself into a distraction for the youma-beast, it was clear that was her intent. However, with a sickening whack of it lashing out, he knew the girl's efforts were less successful than his own.

Logically he knew he should follow her advice. Yet with what had just happened, he was not so certain that should have been the highest priority now.

Whether the girl liked it or not, soon enough the teal-haired knight had banished away his weapon for the time being so he could pick the senshi in his arms. His manners always seemed to get the best of him, since it would have been rude to just simply let her fend for herself in such conditions.

"...you are the Senshi with the asthma if I am remembering correctly?" he mentioned briefly now that he had a face to go with the new fuku she was wearing.

The observation out in the air, he then proceeded to exit the vicinity through the hole where the glass for the door used to be.

Before Irene knew what was going on, she found herself being carried outside. For a moment, she was too stunned to do anything. Then, she figured out that she could, but decided not to. Putting up a fuss would just distract both of them from the real issue. She would just have to address this matter later, when their lives- and her livelihood- were not at risk.

Then he brought up the asthma, and all bets were off.

“I cannot possibly be the only senshi with asthma,” she huffed- in impatience, not because she was having trouble breathing. If she was the only asthmatic senshi, it just proved how awesome she was. “I am aware of the steps I need to take to manage it, and it rarely impedes my performance. The measures you have taken, while kind, were not necessary. And if you expect me to step back and let you take this youma on alone, you have another thing coming!”

Having got that off her chest, Irene felt better, but still a bit unnerved. “How did you know, anyway?” Wait, what was she talking about? They didn’t have time for this! Shaking her head to indicate that she didn’t really need an answer- at least, not yet- she faced the place where the door used to be and tossed a shard of glass inwards. If the monster stayed inside, they couldn’t fight it, and that would be just awful for everyone involved. Except maybe the monster.

Nysa was far from impressed by her rant that she gave while he carried her out in his arms. He was quite certain that when someone did another person a favor, one was supposed to be grateful.

Not prattle on about how capable they really were.

The moment they were outside, he practically dropped her to the ground (though he was kind enough to at least let her feet drop before the rest of her so she had a chance to catch herself upon her feet).

He said nothing and he seemed to do nothing. The senshi seemed to busy herself back with targeting the youma, and the Squire simply let her. He had no plans on taking the youma on alone, but now the girl would find herself temporarily facing the monstrous creature all by herself.

There was a sound from inside the restaurant that sounded as if the beast had managed to hear the sound of something. An odd dragging sound made it evident that it was turning to face where the stray glass had landed.

Rather than tense up and step closer, preparing to engage, the Squire simply crossed his arms and took a couple steps back and to the side.

Communicating was hard. Communicating mid-battle was harder still. Irene knew that it wasn't the right time to bring up how capable she was- which was why she stopped- but she didn't realize that she'd offended her temporary partner by saying those things. Which was why, as the youma disentangled itself from the door frame, she believed that she had backup, and charged in.

Then again, even if she knew that she was on her own, she probably would have charged in anyway. The best thing to do was to handle this quickly, before anyone got hurt. To say nothing of the restaurant itself- Maize Maizier had already taken a lot of damage, and Irene wanted to spare her workplace from any more.

The sidewalk cafe outside the restaurant was a mess: tables were turned over, a few chairs had landed in the street, and one umbrella was bent at an awkward angle. There was a wide path cleared in front of the door, probably because the youma had cleared it when it had entered. Irene tried to stay in that area, throwing more debris in order to lure the monster into the open. Not that she knew what to do once she'd gotten it there. It was too big for her to handle, really, but she had to do something.

So, she began where she always began, with kicks. Two in quick succession aimed at what she thought might be the youma's knees, then down to avoid a swinging arm. Two more higher up, then back-

The idea was sound. The technique, not so much. Irene's last kicks were slower and sloppier, and the youma was able to grab her leg mid-kick, hoisting her into the air like a rag doll.

To her credit, she didn't scream. As the blood rushed to her head, she tried to kick at the hand holding her with her free leg. At least, until she realized the way her skirt was positioned. It didn't matter that her fuku came with a leotard; Irene turned pink and grabbed the edges of her skirt, trying to hold them over her thighs. At least she had her priorities figured out, even if they were questionable.

It was not a pretty sight, but fighting rarely was meant to be pretty unless it was choreographed for a movie. Yet, Nysa still stood there, watching far more calmly than a normal observer should have been.

The girl had thrown debris to catch its attention, then rushed in kicking. If there was one thing that was glaringly obvious to the young man, it was the fact her timing was off. Had she paid attention to the timing of the creature's already slow and lumbering movements, she could have easily gone about fighting it without getting hit.

Instead, she was now merely a toy for the youma's enjoyment, being tossed about like a toddler's favorite toy.

Initially he had no intention upon assisting her, since it was obviously not permitted without her permission. However, when she started to turn rosy, a part of him realized she had suffered enough embarrassment for the evening. He held his hand out to the side before closing the fingers to wrap about the grip of his weapon that phased in with such a simple gesture.

Narrowing his eyes, he rushed in a distinctly different fashion than what the senshi had. Rather than just speed in and attack, he sped forward, stopped long enough to judge the creature's next motion before sliding around smoothly to further confuse the monster. It was from his new location that he dared to slice at the limb latched onto the girl.

"...I am not a fan of indecent exposure..."

"Neither am I!" Irene shrieked, trying her best to keep her skirt where it belonged. It was hard, considering the monster was jerking her this way and that, and she was getting rather dizzy from all of the movement. It was a relief when the knight came to her aid, wounding the youma in the arm. That was enough to make it drop her, and while she avoided landing on her head, she landed rather hard on her tailbone instead.

"Ouch," she mumbled. Then, somewhat louder, "I appreciate the assistance." See? She did know how to say thanks! At least, when the help she was given was called for, and not thrust upon her.

She winced as she stood up, holding one hand to her head. Even now that the world wasn't spinning, she still felt woozy. The youma was occupied by its wound, but that wouldn't deter it for much longer. They needed a decisive blow. "Would a short burst of speed be useful for you? I can provide one, but it will vanish once you make an attack. If we only have one shot, it would be best to coordinate our strikes." Not that she was capable of striking much at that moment, but the slight boost of speed would help her as well, or so she hoped.
