Filking's not a hobby, it's a lifestyle - Shadow's a filker: he plays folk music with a general science fiction or fantasy theme. With his singing voice and his ability to play the flute, and his quiet nerdiness, Shadow's a natural at it. He likes it enough that his inherent fear of playing 'big' gigs goes away, despite the fact that filking is most often done at places like renaissance fairs and sci-fi conventions.
Judge a bird by its feathers - Shadow is also an amateur birdwatcher and has gained enough knowledge from encyclopedias and Wikipedia to correctly identify most native birds by sight. He can't yet do it by birdcall, but he takes some pleasure in being able to name a bird just by the pattern of the feathers on its wings or tail. It's a nerdy hobby, and one he enjoys by himself most of the time.
Pass me another PBR - he spends his time on the bar scene a lot, in bars tucked out of the way, bars that have a lot of graffiti in their bathrooms and that serve cold PBR. Even when he's not playing small gigs or there to enjoy music, these types of bars let Shadow, a self-appointed introvert, enjoy the crowds, the clouds of smoke, and the general bar scene without being in front of a ton of people. Sometimes these bars even let him do a filk show under the pretense of 'indie' music.
Virtues:
Warm heart, warm hands - Shadow -- when he is comfortable around his friends and those he likes -- is passionate about his hobbies and warmly affectionate around others, and prefers to give physical expressions of appreciation and comfort rather than anything else. He'll flop down on a couch and snuggle, clap someone on the back, or tuck himself in next to someone without a second thought.
Observant -- Shadow is quietly observant: someone who notices the girl behind him in line counting every penny to see if she has enough, then discreetly giving the barista extra for her.
Self-sufficient -- On his own since he was about thirteen, Shadow is pretty self-sufficient; not only did he have to be out of necessity, but this was a trait his father instilled in him before his parents split. If he has to find a way to make it work, he will make it work -- even if it means scrimping and saving and counting his pennies, or spending an evening busking on a street corner. He can take care of himself and doesn't like to rely on other people unless he absolutely has to. Sometimes this means refusing help, even when that help would make his life easier.
Flaws:
Lean on me ... or stand on your own two feet - People who don't ask for help, and try to struggle blindly on without asking for it, or accepting it, annoy him. This might make him look like a fair-weather friend, but that's not quite it. He'll help: if you ask. If you don't, he doesn't want to watch.
Like an onion -- Shadow might be a type that people confide in, that is able to slip into situations and blend right in, but he does play his cards close to the vest. Not many people know everything about him; there are many layers to Shadow, and certain people are allowed through certain filters, for his protection and their own. It means that his friends are divided into groups, and unfortunately, sometimes he forgets who knows what, which can lead to misunderstandings when people feel slighted or betrayed. He tries his hardest to keep everything straight, but sometimes there are just too many things to remember.
1000% done -- Not just a type to avoid confrontation, he doesn't just passively sit out opportunities — he goes above and beyond. If he gets into a disagreement with a friend, for instance, he avoids them altogether instead of solving it. If he gets a bad exam grade in a class, he has been known to drop the class altogether. This tendency to just avoid things has meant he's been in college for longer than most people.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION
Eyes: Aqua blue with thick dark eyelashes.
Hair: Snow white and kept long enough to hold in a ponytail or braided up in something intricate, it is poker straight and it's obvious Shadow takes good care of it. Sometimes pieces escape to be tucked behind his ears.
Face: Sharp features with high cheekbones, slightly hawkish, but with a sensitive mouth that is usually somewhat pensive looking. He has a straight nose and normal ears. He has a skin tone that approaches something like cafe au lait, presumably from something in his ancestry (he doesn't talk about it, but his father was full-blooded Cherokee).
Clothes: Generally seen in jeans and long-sleeved tee shirts, sometimes with a scarf and a light jacket in the winter. He likes dark colors, charcoals and deep greens, and all different shades of blue. Also, see his Polyvore closet.
He tends towards 'hipster' in the way he dresses, though without the obnoxious glasses. Sometimes he's seen with a messenger bag in brightly woven South American fabric, or a wallet on a chain stuck in his back pocket.
