After his defeat at the hands of the guardians, specifically Jack, Pitch was furious. There was no reason for him to have lost- he was fear incarnate! The terror that filled peoples’ hearts was the source of his power, and everyone felt fear, so how was it that he had fallen? It made no sense!

No matter what the guardians said, humans were despicable creatures that didn’t deserve to live; they polluted the world, lied to anyone they met, and whenever they couldn’t agree, they resorted to violence. Of course they were afraid, they were already destroying themselves! Was he not the greatest guardian of all for ridding the world of these terrible creatures?

The fact that destroying them would create an abundance of fear for him to feed on was just a pleasant side effect…

But alas, simply rising up again would result in another defeat… He needed enough strength so that he couldn’t be defeated before he had risen… but how to generate that much fear?

The answer lied in the humans themselves: war.

Pitch knew that given a reason, the humans would tear themselves apart for victory, they would unwittingly turn themselves into a generator for his power… And so he went for the basic primal instinct that all humans have- desire. He appeared before them- for whether they realize it or not, everyone believes in fear- and played himself has a god, using his abilities to awe them and get the world’s attention… And once he was on television, radios, and all eyes and ears were on him, he pulled out a stone.

”I will be waiting in the North Pole.” He said, ”If you can reach me and lay your hand on this stone, I will grant you a wish- any wish your mortal heart desires… However…” His lips curved into a crooked smile, ”It will only work once. So prove you’re worthy, humans.”

As Pitch predicted, the citizens of the mortal world raised an uproar; using war machines, rage, and even desperation, in a mad scramble to the North Pole. Some wanted wealth and power, others wanted to save a dying family member, and each person was willing to do whatever it took to get what they wanted.

The war steadily made its way northwards as the race continued, and the chaos only increased with each day. Eventually the warring humans stumbled upon Santa’s workshop, where they believed the stone to be. When the guardians there attempted to explain Pitch’s dark intentions, and that the stone was a fake, the people, in their greed, decided that the stone was being hidden from them, and attacked without mercy. Unable to fight back due to their powers relying on protecting humans, and with their words only falling on deaf ears, the guardians ended up having no choice but to retreat, leaving behind the workshop- their base- to be demolished.

The humans meanwhile, tore apart the workshop, fighting all the while. When the stone wasn’t found, each party believed that another had taken it, and began fighting with new fever to get it back.

Despair overtook the world, and people began to lose hope and faith; for every ounce of power that Pitch gained, the guardians grew weaker. They were powerless to fight back as Pitch fed voraciously and ruled with an iron fist; the world, once so beautiful and filled with love of children, became a dark place filled with war and hatred… The guardians went into hiding, to pray to the moon for a chance of survival. They needed a miracle. They needed new guardians.

Unfortunately, having fed off the fear of everyone in the world, there was no one strong or pure enough left to become a guardian. The world’s resources were gone, including those of inner strength. All that was left was desolation and fear…. But then Pitch made a mistake.

Deciding that he’d tapped out all the fear of Earth, he used his newfound strength to rip a hole in dimensions- distorting time and space so that he could feed on more fear. He would alter the very fabric of the universe, so that humans would feel fear for eternity; and with that power, he would cease to be a simple spirit and become a god of darkness.

A dark endeavor… But the worlds that he opened to were not yet sapped of goodness, and as such, had potential guardians. Three were chosen, one from each world: Merida, a wild princess from an ancient kingdom, Rapunzel, a warmhearted being imbued with magic, and Hiccup, a smart but clumsy tamer of dragons… Each was capable of doing great things, but they would need guidance if they were going to save anyone. North, Bunnymund, and Toothiana were too weak to be able to gather the three safely. They’d grown weak as people lost faith in them… But Jack, even while invisible, even while not believed in, didn’t lose his power.

It was decided that he would go to gather the guardians, as North had once done many years before him, and together they would become the next ‘big four’… Together, they would save the universe.

Pitch returned with a new plan, playing himself as a god for the people of the world. He led them to war with a false promise: that a stone would be in the North Pole that would grant any wish, but only one. The humans waged a terrible war, and with the growing chaos, faith and hope began to fade. The guardians were weak by the time that the humans reached the North Pole and destroyed it in their search.

Pitch used his newfound power to open portals between dimensions, his greed driving him to search for more fear, but these worlds were not yet drained of all hope- they still had potential guardians. Merida, Hiccup, and Rapunzel were chosen, and because the other guardians were too weak to fight, Jack was chosen to go and tell them of their fate. With guidance, these new guardians would become the next Big Four, and together, they’d save the universe.
