In uniform, perhaps Caleb would have recognized the strange man ringing his buzzer: tall, slim, with pale hair about three inches too long that tumbled helplessly around his face, Ilmenite had stood up at the infiltration meeting with a grin under his cap and, unashamedly, had made his offer to the crowd. Now, though, he was out of it, and Ever would be more of a stranger -- a shaggy stranger, in ill-fitting and worn out clothing, too poorly dressed to be selling religious tracts but too cheerful to be asking for money.

Magazines maybe. He could be selling magazines.

He hummed while he waited for an answer, tossing a jumbo off-brand bag of gummy bears from one hand to the other. It was tuneless, and off key all the same, and maybe, just maybe, it meant that he was nervous.

Gummy bears? FOR ME? You shouldn't have~ 4laugh emotion_bigheart

Homeless man or an unsightly neighbor? Caleb wasn't sure who the man was on the other side of the peephole. Part of his was nervous, thinking opening the door would either lead to some kind of robbery, assault, or a terrible smell. With a sigh and against his better judgment, the redhead opened the door to see what the shaggy young man on the other side of the door wanted.

If it was alcohol, Caleb was fresh out.

Opening the door, Caleb was relieved to not be assaulted physically or nasally. Smelled like this young man bathed. Points for him. "Ah, can I help you?" Maybe he car broke down somewhere on street level and he didn't have a cellphone. Or maybe he was a neighbor whose power was out. Maybe he needed to borrow some sugar? Whatever he wanted, Caleb made sure to keep the door only half open until he ascertained what the young man's purpose for being at his door was.

The gummy bears, at least, would hopefully set Caleb at ease: no one truly evil could come bearing a bag of gummy bears that big. The smile, in contrast, maybe not as much so. Too many teeth, too easy, the smile of someone who often smiled without meaning it, to the point where it got hard to tell...

He raised his eyebrows, catching the bag and pausing as he looked Caleb over. This wasn't his first time doing this, not anymore, which meant he was less, well. Careful. Maybe.

"Caleb? Are you Caleb?"

Why did he know my name? Is he a customer? No, he can't be a customer. I don't tell people where I live and if he doesn't know my name, that would explain why I don't recognize him.

Caleb likely looked plainly worried by this turn of events. Do I need my taser?

The white-haired man had candy but Caleb didn't know where the van was. "Ah... yes. If you're here for an appointment, you should really check in with the salon itself. I don't take clients in my home." He glanced down the hallway now, wondering if he should grab his cellphone at some point to call the cops, just in case. "My sisters would be happy to help you. But you know my name and I don't know yours. Do I know you?"

Hair salon -- well. No. He wasn't a customer. And he probably wasn't exactly Caleb's usual sort of customer, either. However, he did rather look like he could use one, shaggy and unkempt as he was, even pale eyebrows a little bit out of control. He shot a look over his shoulder, in the direction of this theoretical salon, and hummed as he shook his head.

"No, I'm looking for Caleb. I'm. Uh. A work acquaintance. Not from the salon. The other kind of work." Those eyebrows went up, slowly and serious. Eyes on Caleb, Ever started to think that he should have brought the beer instead.

"Ever Ambrodiel. I live with Zac."

The other kind of work.

Caleb blinked. "Oh! Yes well... please, come inside." For a moment, the redhead felt utterly embarrassed for not realizing who he was speaking to. Of course, the glamour of powering up hid the civilian identity and replaced it with something else. That was why Caleb didn't recognize who he was speaking to. But if Ever Ambrodiel lived with Zac, he must be alright.

The innards of the apartment were sterile, clean and rather dull. Unassuming neutrals covered much of the space, the entry hall leading into a living room featuring a couch, love-seat and glass coffee table with a small television. The kitchen was off to the right and it was small, but functional. "Is there anything I can get for you, Ever? Coffee? Tea? Are you hungry?" Caleb's current outfit matched the decor, white button up shirt and jeans. Nothing too out of the ordinary. "And, if you don't mind me asking," He checked to see if the door was fully closed. Sensitive matters and all. "...just who am I addressing? With regards to the other work, that is."

-- better. It was so hard for him to get a positive reaction out of people that this one made him grin all at once, sudden and bright and maybe, just maybe, a little tiny bit relieved. He stepped into the apartment, turning slowly in place to consider the walls. In truth, his own home wasn't much better -- but that was because it wasn't his apartment. Always strange, to decorate somewhere you were just a guest, and Ever would probably never think of their shared apartment as half his --

He blinked, and then held out the gummybears to Caleb, bright and easy. "General Ilmenite of Infiltration. I come bearing gifts, if you want to counter with tea, I wouldn't object at all."

The redhead lifted an eyebrow at the gummy bears. Bribery, perhaps? But for what? "Oh, thank you, General." he replied, a slight bow of the head out of respect. Caleb disappeared into the kitchen after gesturing to the couch as an offering to Ever to sit down and make himself comfortable. He was a General and Caleb's commanding officer, technically.

The music of ceramic clinking together. Cabinets opening and closing. The sound of the microwave running. It was much faster than waiting for water to boil. Once requested tea was prepared (Earl Grey, hopefully Ever liked that kind), Caleb brought out a teacup and saucer for the white haired young man. "What brings you to my door? Is there a mission? I'm afraid I don't have much to report. I gave all the information I have so far in last week's report."

Sitting on the chair perpendicular to Ever, Caleb leaned back and listened.

He didn't sit, at first. Instead, while Caleb was in the other room, Ever took some time to investigate: stepping up to furniture to study it curiously, hunting down pictures to turn them in his hand, exploring the contents of shelves and bookcases -- in short, snooping. But it was snooping without any purpose other than getting to know who lived here.

When he did sit on the couch, it wasn't gracefully, and it wasn't professionally. Instead he sprawled into the corner with long legs stretched out across the floor and his elbow propped on the arm. Caleb's careful, proper posture, his gracious hosting, seemed to do little more than leave Ever amused, dark eyes bright and an eyebrow raised as he accepted the cup.

"Uh. You know who I am? I mean, more than just the basics, I mean it more on a philosophical level." A beat, floundering, as he took a sip, still lounging into his corner. "Do you know who I am. Have you heard anything about me. I'm just curious."

The redhead's shoulders sagged a bit. "I'm afraid not." he admitted after a moment of silence. "Nothing beyond your name and rank, your branch, and that you live with Zac. He's my half-brother through a deadbeat father. Other than that, I know next to nothing about you."

Caleb nodded to himself, as if affirming a thought that had been tumbling around in his head. "Truthfully, I sometimes find it difficult to get to know Negaverse officers. There seems to be a prevailing sense of distrust from Officer to Senshi and I'm not quite sure why. Needless to say, I try. I know Benitoite, Leucite and a handful of others. Nothing deep or, as you say, philosophical, but it's a start." Certainly better than nothing despite the fact that I have being a senshi working against me from the get-go.

"Why do you ask? Not that I mind it, of course."

"I asked because you were just about saluting at me, and that's not something that happens all that often." It came out dry, easy; casual. Behind it, though, his mind was working, and it showed in his eyes. After all, this wasn't the first time a corrupt senshi had mentioned their uncertainty in their position, their discomfort in the Negaverse. He turned his teacup slowly, leaning back as he did.

"...you have to understand how things used to be with the senshi, though. With the others, I mean. They've gone calmer and quieter, now, but there was a time..." He hesitated, smoothing scarred fingertips together, old wounds that still puckered his palms. "There was some vicious fighting, more than what we get these days, back when the Blood Moon Court was around."
PostPosted: Mon Jun 10, 2013 8:14 pm

Caleb let go of a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Respect, is all. Even if you and I were of the same rank in a sense, I'd still salute you. That's how some of the officers treat us; same sort of rank but just a step lower."

And obviously it wasn't their fault.

He shook his head, shoulders slumping as he leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees. "I'm afraid I don't know what the Blood Moon is. Or was. I've heard whisperings of it but there aren't many people willing to divulge a great deal of information to us." Would Ever want to explain? Truthfully, the white-haired man was one of the friendliest, or rather, most sympathetic, to the Negaverse Senshi. Why was that? Was this prejudice simply something that became perpetuated with each incoming rank of officers?

That was a heavy question, and -- well. It was one that forced Ever to be serious, for the moment, something which was almost physically painful. He reached up to pinch the bridge of his nose, to swipe fingers up through his hair. He couldn't shake this one off, nor could he play at ignorance or indifference. So instead he actually thought about his words, chewed on them --

"The BMC...they're not all that active anymore, but when they were, their policy was to do damage to our side, as much as they could, for essentially the sole purpose of doing damage." He leaned back, slowly, arms folding over his chest. Less open. More restrained. Contained. Uncomfortable.

"They kidnapped a bunch of our people and tortured them in fairly horrible ways, and set up a magical mazed to mess with our minds when we went to rescue them." That clarified enough, didn't it? Didn't need to go into details about the exact tortures..."That's a lot to get past for some people, I guess. Though if you offered up your star, the way, uh, Alkaid did, it might get you somewhere..."

The shock in his face was fairly evident. "....what?"

Why hadn't anyone told him this before?!

"Is this why the Negaverse doesn't trust us?" Arms stretched out to Ever like a child pleading for reassurance. "Even if we were awakened after all that happened? Don't get me wrong, I will mourn for everyone caught up in that... horrible time even if I wasn't there. But... doesn't it seem unfair to you to lump us all in with those horrible senshi? Euclase and I, and Vespa as well, we were never a part of that. We awakened with you, with the Negaverse." There was never any other history for them - they hadn't made the decision to leave the side of evil to join the ranks of the righteous. Perhaps, if they had, they would be trusted more than they were now? Or perhaps even less?

Ever's next suggestion struck an odd chord in Caleb's chest. One he didn't know he had. "...give up... my star?" came a parroted reply. The redhead chuckled nervously, shaking his head as though thoroughly ashamed of himself. "I'm afraid, even if I wanted to, I wouldn't know where to begin." The young man leaned back, no, more slumped into the back of his chair. "I don't know what my star even is. I can't give up something I don't have possession of and I wouldn't even know how to go about finding out in the first place..."

"I can't answer all that. I'm not a senshi, wouldn't be even if they'd gotten to me first." He settled into his chair as he said it, hand against the side of his jaw and eyes still on Caleb. He was asking question that were better answered by -- hm.

"You could talk to her, though. Alkaid, I mean. I haven't seen her in an age and a half, but if you sought her out, I'm sure she could explain it to you better." He hesitated, though, wobbling, so so. "Or you could talk to a cat, though they can be a bit crazy. And cryptic."
