He'd had to cut back his hours, significantly, he was just lucky he could keep his job! Cutting back to working only on weekends was a big change, in pay and in hours. He just hoped that the cut back would be all he had to do, that he wouldn't need to drop his job altogether. He liked his job and found it to be relaxing, which considering his life he needed it, so wanted to keep his job if at all possible.

Today was a Saturday and so Alexandre was dressed in a white polo and khaki pants that were nicely fitted to his petite form. An apron with pockets was worn about his waist and held many needed items, pruning sheers among other things. Little blank price tags and a marker, ready to price anything which was missing it's tag, was also found in the apron he wore.

Patel Farms was a nice nice family, not his family, owned flower nursery which had grown in size over the winter. With an additional four green houses the place was doing well in this tough economic time, it seemed that people still liked flowers and found them something which they could afford. Alexandre was in one of those new greenhouses. Slender digits lifted one of the large, and heavy, flowers of the false birds of paradise which this greenhouse housed. The large flower was a bright redish pink color with limeish green tips. It was called a hanging lobster claw. He didn't know what had gotten his bosses into going for exotic plants but he was glad they had, they were stunning in their bright colors and odd appearance.

Short ash bangs fell into his face as he leaned down to sniff at the flowers, almost nuzzling the large flower. It really was quite the lovely plant and exotic, different.

Names were important. Maybe moreso in legend and lore, than what was considered today, but as he was now sporting something that was legend, lore, or fairytale, it seemed important to do something to reflect it. Quenton had sat at the window to his small place for all the morning, finding almost nothing available about Thraen, which left him with the rest of the title- of Gardens.

He didn't know a thing about gardening. He'd been to a few- beautiful sprawling historic ones that were half-parks anymore and belonged to historic sites or public lands in Paris, Exmoor, London, Kluj. Looking up what a garden was had been just as expansive as the miles he'd traveled on cheap trips. there were whole philosophies behind how they were laid out, what plants were chosen, where plants were put in to maximize growth and drainage. He hadn't expected it to be....well, such an art.

And he felt ashamed.

He needed to do something about it. To be....more what there was inside. In that private, glowing, wounded starseed in his chest. He felt like he was missing so much, lacking even the most basic of connections to that other name and other person- to Sailor Thraen. He wanted to start keeping some plants...a window box and pot-garden. So he'd looked up some greenhouses in the phonebook and took a chance. Ask the experts if you want to know what you should start with and how to take care of them.

So he giraffed along through the aisles of the expansive sea of chlorophyll, looking more grey and tatty than usual in his old clothes. Except for the flame of his eyes, lit with wonder and more than a little lost. He perked when he saw there was a person in an apron ahead. That probably meant that the small man either came here often or worked here. Quenton paused, considering as he watched from next to exotic mixed baskets nearest the misters, considering the pallor of cheeks and blonde against the vibrancy of the strange flower being admired. The white shirt looked crisp. He couldn't hold the image well in his mind, though, short-lived as a breath and then gone, capturable only in gestures with ink or pencil that he did not have and regretted.

So he dodged some hanging fuchsia baskets and softly called, "Excuse me? Do you work here?"

Startled, he hadn't heard anyone approaching him, he looked up. Eyes the color of wet slate stared up at the taller blond. "I do...can I help you?" It took a moment to find his voice, to get himself into 'helping people' mode. He had been busy with clipping away dead leaves, branches, and watering plants all day. He'd rather tend to plants than help people if he were being honest. He liked his plants, loved them in fact, but most people who came here knew little to nothing and simply bought what looked nice - and then either killed it or only thought of the appearance of the plant. They didn't look into anything about the plants aside from what was written on the little care card that came with each plant, he had a whole bunch of those in a pocket of his little apron also.

There was an art behind plants and meanings to them. Not just the romantic sort of meaning either but a meaning which used to dictate what people used to decorate their gardens with and the placement of the plants. Then there were the magical, for those who followed the pagan religion, meanings to various plants. And while he knew a good many meanings behind the plants he didn't know them all, it was simply impossible to do so. But for one who was eighteen he knew more than most people who came here about plants. And it was their lack of knowledge, them not wanting to learn, and how he could ramble about them that had him not wanting to deal with the majority of the people who came here looking for something pretty and bright to put into their yards or hang from somewhere.

Drawing away from the plant, letting the long trail of flowers gently hang, he turned fully to face the long haired male. A glance over the gray color of the others clothing and he rubbed his hands, not that they were dirty, on his apron. "Something your looking for?" Likely something very common, like most people who came here were. He was planning on taking one of these false birds of paradise home and adding it to his own small greenhouse - he just hoped he had the room.

The crisp white polo shirt was from Hollister, something he'd normally never wear, but it was cheap and only worn for work. The pants were for the same purpose, and only that purpose. His feet were covered however in expensive sneakers.

Not having exacts to answer with, looking at how proper the gent seemed- pristine in white like he was made of bleach despite working in dirt- Quenton felt more tatty than usual. "Well, honestly, that's the rub. I don't have an exact want for plants, just a general idea and hoped to ask the experts. "

"I don't know a thing about gardening, is the real answer. I've gotten some books, and read them, but those are all...generic. They are for vegetable gardens or greenhouses, and...I'm a beginner. They don't really talk about what are good starter....hardy plants. And! I saw there was...'urban gardening' - made for small spaces and no actual land in pots. I'd like to start and keep one. I can't imagine fancy ones like these, " he motioned admiring to the lobster claw, "Would do well for a windowsill and pot garden in a cramped studio. But I don't really know. "

"If you have the time to help, I'd be obliged...or to point me in a direction if you're busy. " He hesitated getting too close, as the guy was really lithe. Delicate even for how small he was. At 6'1", he didn't want to loom.

He didn't have a want for plants? Even the idiots who came here had a want for them. If you didn't want them why come here? The place only sold plants after all. For a moment he considered rolling his eyes before the other continued to speak.

"No, they need a lot of sun and room to grow. They can get rather tall in fact." He spoke as he hoped he had the room for one himself. He was sure he did and if not maybe he could make his green house larger...or something? "So you want beginners plants and to learn how to keep them." He said, speaking the words aloud so he could better digest them as he started thinking. "And something that can live indoors and in a pot, I'm assuming indoors." Figuring it was an apartment with no access to the outdoors, via like a balcony or anything.

"If your looking for ones you can use for food herbs are good. If your looking for flowers you have a lot of options. You can get plants which don't flower or ones that do, it's up to you." Obviously he was willing, and able, to help the other easily. While he was sort, petite really, he certainly carried himself well.

Finally he held out a hand. "Alexandre Evans. I'd be willing to help you if you have the time." As there were many options really.

"Ah, " he took the man's hand first before answering questions, "Quenton. Quenton Marinus. I have time, I worked ahead as I could yesterday to leave time today especially for...trying to see about gardening. "

Hearing the man repeat the basics of what he'd said, concision, made him wince. His tendency toward being verbose apparently not wanted here. Talk of light and space he could give more exacts about, which was at least a little more comforting. Mr. Evans had seemed bromidic at first, even if he'd offered help professionally regardless. "The space I have is a wire stepped shelf, three tiers, in a roughly 3x1x3 space right under the window. It's nearly floor to ceiling, so it gets good light, and there's a ledge that could support a window box."

"Its a north facing window, so it gets cold morning light."

"I think...variety would be nice. Complementary scents and colours. It seems like just all flowers or all herbs would be asking for dissonance. I read that mint is really hardy in a warning section about plants that take over- mint, morning glory, rose of sharon...all saying to be careful about putting them in yards. I'm open, or really fishing, for suggestions."

"Ok, that's good." When he let the others hand go he let his hand fall to his side. At least they seemed to care about wanting to learn. But why did they want to learn about gardening?

Taking in the information provided he nodded his head. "Variety is always good. Flowers, with bright or soft colors, can look very nice when used to break up the green of other plants." A nice mix of soft greens with softer colored flowers or darker greens with brighter flowers, either idea was nice and appealing. "I agree. A balance is nice, and it gives your some plants which serve a purpose." Not that plants which were were poisonous didn't serve a purpose, they did, and some of them in small doses were medicinally used or had been in the past.

"Some plants can be invasive, destructive even, not what most would figure from plants. But they can be rather vicious and those are indeed some of them. Mint you can manage but I'd say to keep that on it's own. Otherwise the best way to handle that, and keep it from invading, is a bottomless pot keep it somewhat separate from everything else sharing a bigger pot with it. Morning glory needs pruning, but not so much that you throw it into shock, or to be kept on it's own. Most invasive plants I suggest you keep on their own unless you can keep them pruned and tended to. Morning glory though has no scent, so unless you want it just for looks it won't offer any smell to the over all." He certainly knew his flowers, and how to tend to them, and he did. It came from reading a ton of books on plants and gardening. But also he seemed like the sort who could go off a bit on the topic, and with the shine to his eyes it was due to passion.

Tapping a foot as he tilted his head, thinking, he glanced around the green house they were in. This one wouldn't do, nothing in here catching his immediate attention. "Follow me and we'll work out some plants for you. So you want softer colors or brighter ones?" He asked after a moments thought, it would be best to know. He could narrow things down further.

" Most of what I own is in some stage of becoming a well-worn and ubiquitous grey, so some bright colour would be nice. Something gentle that fashions itself and is already sublime to admire for once instead of having to find the beauty to release it from stone. Oh, rock for substrate isn't an issue. I'm a sculptor, so I usually have at least a bag of granite chips, marble, soapstone or glass around that can be upcycled. " He lifted a hand- the anatomy- bones, tendons and muscles in his hands and forearms stark-defined and hard with calloused pads and slightly cracked cuticles. They looked like hands that shaped stone and metal even if the rest of him was narrow.

"So pokey plants are fine too, I doubt they'll make it through the weathering." Highly technical term there, pokey.

Ok, so bright colors. Bright colors would go well, give some pop to their surroundings. That narrowed things down a bit, and it helped him, as he bobbed his head to his own thoughts, and the others words. "So a natural beauty. I know some plants I think you'll like." Or at least he hoped the other would. A small, soft, smile slowly twisted his lips as the smaller of the two blonds gazed up at the other, a single brow raised. "An artist?" He questioned, even if the answer was obvious.

His ideas in mind he knew where he was going and headed for the right greenhouse. The gravel under his feet crunched and churned. The pieces of gravel grinding against each other as he moved under the bright sunlight of the day, if someone got close enough they might smell the sunblock he wore. With his fair skin he worried over burning, he didn't tan at all, and since he couldn't avoid being out in the sun he spent most of the summer smelling of the stuff. Ash hair shone under the bright sun with natural highlights, which only seemed to stand out under the sunlight.

"Pokey plants? I do believe you'll have to show me these pokey plants - after I show you some plants though." His first idea was perennial sage, it was a bit on the tall side as it got to eighteen inches tall, but with blue or purple flowers and gray-green foliage it was a lovely plant really. Another he was thinking of was bachelor's button, its's cornflower blue color was another nice color and would go nicely with the sage. Though he did need to remind himself that he had to go bright.

"Do you have a height maximum? Some plants go quite tall, vine like plants."

"Well, aspiring artist. Maybe when I'm dead someone can review my work and declare whether I was successful or not. Its hard not to hate a piece a month after its done. The important thing is to keep learning and moving forward with the craft, right?"

Quenton followed with ease, lightly haloing plants with his hand as the passed- like touching them might wilt or offend them. But his growing relaxation was plain, breathing deep and shoulders relaxing. It felt...right...the plastic and glass and framing black in silhouette above of greenhouse architecture. Amalgam of smells- flowers, fresh earth, greens and fronds mixing and whorled about. It felt like a walk he could have made thousands of times, and yet never had he before.

"The ceiling is 12 feet from the floor, but I don't mind vines if they want to train along I can put up some lattice for a headboard. I don't have one right now. but that takes time doesn't it? "

"I find it hard to hate a piece of mine. But I suppose that's just me and I'm lucky." Shrugging his shoulders gently. "Perhaps you won't have to wait till death though. Art, and those who make an artist and their works famous, are rather fickle things." Not that he cared one way or the other. he didn't paint for others and rarely let others see what he did, he didn't sell them, hang them in his room nor his home, he didn't show them at galleries. He was rather private in his workings, and he liked it that way. he didn't make a big deal or fuss over it all. It was, for him, a hobby and a passion.

"Some plants here already have some small lattice work with them, because they have grown rather quickly and without the support of the lattice they would hang and drag the floor. I wasn't sure if you'd want any vine plants, they can be a nuisance with how they wrap about things and tangle around whatever they grab on to. But some of them have lovely flowers, and personally I happen to like such plants the best." Orchids, bleeding hearts, ivy, and other such things. If he wasn't afraid of the damage wisteria could, and would likely do, he'd have a bush of it in his backyard. But he knew they were tree killers.

Reaching the correct greenhouse he stepped inside and went to showing him the blue and purple hued flowers he'd been thinking about. Both were nice, both easy enough to care for, but neither were vine plants. They could just get tall.

The plants soil was wet and water droplets clung to flowers and leaves, someone must have just watered them and left. The smell of the flowers in the greenhouse mixed with the smell of wet soil and...something else. Something earthy and...gentle. It was a smell he inhaled and let out slowly. The smell was like that of moss, rain, flowers, earthen soil, and it was just enchanting to put some word to it.

Finally, after some moments, he found himself again and blinked. "I think these two would look lovely, though again it is my opinion. If you see something in here which catches your eye you should point it out. After all these plants are for your home." Looking up at the taller figure, a smile in place.

A piece of mine left clear implications that Mr. Evans did some sort of art, whether professional or otherwise.

"There's not much of a community outside of toy sculpts and 3d work anymore for sculpture, so I don't expect I'll get the benefit of the fickle Critics." His tone gave the title a capital C. "Occasional dedications of stuff like those cows and horses in crazy theme colors, not that I go in for that for my work. "

"What media do you work in? You don't have to answer, I just love the different perspectives and drives of artists. ' We are the music makers,: And we are the dreamers of dreams' "

Passing some of the vined plants he couldn't help a brief wry look, Oh yes, I know how they tangle. I'm often enough covered in passiflora. He wanted to request none of them, really, but that sort of specification with no others might be suspicious if the media or security cameras ever got footage of him. He'd just have to find a different excuse if they were suggested. "Well, I came specifically for a professional opinion.

Quenton puffed some of the deep purple Blue Hill variety of sage stalks and then some nearby lavender Yarrow. "The blues would look nice in north light. It's cold and brings out colour so well. Though some orange something might look nice with it."

"Mirror the dawn in all its splendor, soft-royal cloak containing fire of morn as he stretched out his fingers, arms, and then finally bears his crown out from the blankets of the Earth." He hadn't meant to wax poetic, but it seemed the best way to convey the thought.

"I wouldn't know, I don't deal with sculptures or have much of a clue about them." They weren't his medium, he worked with his hands but with paints and plants. He seriously doubted he could do what the other blond did. He figured he'd wind up staring at the materials with a clueless, vacant, expression on his face before giving up. Cows and horses...yes...a poor thing to put ones talents to, but he didn't say as much.

"I work in paint - water colors and I've been working in oils this year. My art teacher thought it best if those of us who have a single medium, or a preferred one, tried to work with something new." And he hadn't liked it at first, it was a challenge to not treat the oil paints as he would watercolors. But he'd gotten the hang of it after some time, and direction. "I suppose gardening is an art form, or at least it once was. I'm not so sure now a days. Most just plant what they like where they will thrive and give no further thought on the matter." But he did, when and where he could. There wasn't much he could do with a greenhouse. But what little of a backyard he had did have some gardening and planting done. Maybe one day he'd have a place with a nice, big, back yard and a front yard where he could plant a proper garden.

"Blues, like these, and oranges will look nice - as you said. So we'll take some of the blue ones and look for some nice orange ones to go with them." The others words were flowery but they painted a very nice mental image in his head.

"We can do that. Personally I'm more the sort to think of wet forests and woods, with spots of white and pale blues and purples highlighting things. The scent of moss and rain fresh along with that of the earth and soil." And yet he also liked the exotic which was on the other end of the spectrum. But there was something relaxing about what he liked.

"For orange maybe we could try some butterfly weed or Clivia miniata. Both have nice, strong, orange flowers. I like the second more than the first, but personal opinion really." And with the blues picked out, the blue hill sage and the lavender yarrow, he picked up one of each. Inspecting to see to their health. "One of each of these?" Looking up with a smile in place.

"Expanding horizons into new courts is probably wise. I've found it helpful myself, since the exposure alone teaches new ways of thinking of problems. I can't paint for beans, myself, its just a travesty of pigment and a waste of good canvas. Imagine if lapis still had to be ground down for blue. I'd be kicked out of school."

"Didn't a lot of old UK garden designs use a lot of boxwood? It has a really distinct scent that's like all that combined- wet and foresty but fresh. And it makes nice hedges." You couldn't walk through them very well and they lent privacy to the meditations of old labyrinths,

"One of each. No use getting over-enthusiastic and then having no space for them all to enjoy." Looking at the relative shapes and colors he considered- the sage already had spears, and the yarrow rolling hills. "The second one...probably? It has a different shape, and the colour's just right. I won't have any butterflies indoors anyway. "

For as quiet as Mr. Evans seemed in general- not offering a lot of exposition and seeming comfortable in silences, he had a nice smile when he used it. Or perhaps when it happened. Being an observer from outside most circles, Quenton had gleaned that quiet people, since they weren't always putting on the ritz, usually wore neutral expressions until circumstance earned reaction. In a way it made it more precious, rare, and genuine feeling. Gardening and plants, at least, were a honest love of this worker. "Besides, I think I can more than trust your opinion and preferences."

"Do you think just regular pots? Or are their special planters? I've seen pictures of crazy GreenWalls, too, but they were huge and lots of grasses and broad leaves and little cactus-y water filled thick leaved things. " 'Succulent' was entirely out of his experience.

"Indeed, I suppose it was a matter of comfort and safety. Knowing your good at one thing and being comfortable in knowing that whatever you do in that area is good in your opinion." Rather than trying to do something new and finding faults in it and wanting to destroy it. It had been a matter of comfort for him. It was something he'd been good at, and not just something he preferred over the other painting forms.

"Not just in the United Kingdom. But it's been used for royal gardens for along time. And the scent is something which divides those who have smelled it. Some like it while others compare it to cat urine. As I've never owned a cat, nor know anyone who does, I can't compare it to that. But I rather like the scent of boxwood. And I would consider using it for hedging if I had a front yard, or a backyard that wasn't fenced in previous to me moving in. The smell is as you said. Though the plant itself can be found in a much smaller variety. It's good for shaping." How many people had it and smelled cat urine and didn't know it was their hedge? He actually smiled, and even gave a soft laugh, at the thought.

"No, you won't have them indoors. So we'll go with the second one then." And he did go to find a healthy specimen, he wouldn't sell a plant he knew wasn't healthy. He looked for those which were strong and not over balanced to any one side, too lanky, or anything of the sort. Well balanced was what he looked for.

"You could do a long box planter. Really anything with holes at the bottom works, it'll let the water drain. A greenwall would work as well, though they are a little insane." Actually he'd looked at them more than once, more out of curiosity than anything. But if he ever got the inspiration, and maybe lost his mind a bit, he might look into getting one for his room or the living room. "For a beginner I'd go with plant boxes with draining holes in the bottom. It's simple and works."
