Victor was on his way home, needing to hurry because he was only supposed to be out for no more than half an hour, to run down to the store and get some milk for his mom. Why she made him do this, he did not know.
He hated leaving the house when it was getting close to sunset. He hated being outside alone. He hated being taught responsibility by throwing him in the deep end. He had to walk up to people and have to talk to them and eep out he didn't know where the milk was, even though he did, and then have to pay for it. They always tried to talk to him, used to him, and he hated that they knew his name and his mom and were all in on this stupid thing.
He frowned at the sidewalk as he wandered down the street.
It was only a few minute walk, really, but he heard something meowing down an alley. Now, it was not hard to imagine what was meowing, but he didn't stop because he wanted to go look at a cat. He stopped because it sounded like it was in pain, and he didn't like that sound.
He didn't want to walk in front of that alley, but it was his only way home. If something popped out of the shadows and he was eaten by something... he was not going to risk it, but that put him in a bad position. If he didn't keep walking he would miss his deadline and get grounded. If he did keep walking he risked being eaten by a possible monster.
What was worse?

Hugbell had heard the mewling too. The child paused, she'd been on the rooftop, which actually wasn't that high up. Jumping down using the fire escape she paused seeing a boy and moving where he could see her. "I think it's hurt." She said looking into the dark Alleyway.
She didn't feel any youma but that didn't mean there wasn't any, she was more focused on the mewling of a kitty than making sure there weren't youma. She had a bear shaped bag slung from one shoulder as she pulled it around and looked for a flashlight. "Do you think we should help it?"
She didn't seem to mind he was a civilian, and that he had a thing of milk with him. She held up the flashlight like she'd found a great treasure before turning it on. "Ah it does work, I was hoping I had remembered the batteries."

Victor very nearly leaped out of his skin when he heard a voice and then saw the source of it in two beats of his heart. He looked at her in wonder, eyes widening. What the heck was she wearing? It looked cool, he liked costumes, but his first instincts were never the ones he went with.
"It's not halloween!" he protested helplessly, his heart in his throat and making it difficult to sound tough or mean or bold. He was just trying to talk through his fear and over the thundering heart beat that was ringing in his head.
Could she hear that too?
His tried to calm himself, though his beet red face was a bit of a giveaway of his internal struggles. He bit his lower lip when she asked him if they should go look for it.
"A dog is probably eating it," he said, by way of not having to go down there and 'help' it. What could he do if there was something hurting it? Anyway, it was dark and it was dangerous and she was dressed weird! The cat mewed again and he stared at the ground, beginning to feel guilty for it. If it was hurt, they were just stalling and letting it suffer more.

"I know it's not halloween, I'm a senshi, this is what I normally wear." She said with a laugh, "I'm Hugbell, Senshi of Comfort." She pushed a strand of hair from her face and back into her hood.
She looked back towards the alleyway, "Dogs don't eat cats silly, its probably hungry and lost." She turned the flashlight down the Alleyway. "Besides the alley is safe, there's nothing in the shadows besides that poor kitty. We should find it before it really does get hurt."
She was trying not to think about it might've been hit by a car or something, they'd worry about that later. She took a few steps into the alleyway before summoning Barnaby. "If you're scared, don't be I have Barnaby he might look small but he can do big things." Honestly she just didn't want to leave the kid by himself now that she knew he was out here so trying to coax him to into helping her was the best idea she had.

Now she was making up words to look smart, or something. He had no idea what that was supposed to mean, though. She said she was... whatever it was. Not calling him a name, and he frowned in thought as he considered his options carefully.
If she was insulting him, he wasn't interested in hanging out with her, but if she was actually telling him something new he wanted to know what the word meant without embarrassing himself it it was something he was already supposed to know.
He did not want to go in the alley though. It was dark and he was scared. Very scared. He grit his teeth and shook his head.
"You go find it! I don't care about the stupid cat!"
As soon as he said it, he regretted it. He did care about animals and the last thing he wanted was for one to be hurt somewhere... needing his help and he was there, refusing to give it. Just because it was dark and he was being a chicken.
"I'm not scared!" He lied and he moved into the alley to prove it. His legs wobbled and he look fearfully around the shadows as he hurried to Hugbell's side, a little too close but not seeming aware of it. "L-let's just find it, then."

Hugbell watched as Victor said he didn't want to find the stupid cat, "Okay, that's fine." She wasn't going to argue with him. Though the next moment he was directly beside her. She tried not to giggle.
"It's okay to be scared sometimes." She said as she walked shining the flashlight where she thought the mewling was coming from, there were trashcans in the way. "Even superheros get scared."
She paused, "That's what a senshi is, a superhero. Kinda like Batman or Superman. Only we get weirder costumes." She look at him, "I don't know if you've ever met any of us. There's older ones too."
She paused when the mewling started again, "Here kitty kitty, we won't hurt you." She called hoping to coax it out so they wouldn't scare it more. "I don't think there's any monsters in the shadows at the moment, at least I don't feel any. Could be some down the street though, never can tell about those silly things." She was trying to give reassurance for both of them really. She knew focusing on the cat instead of energy singles could leave them out to dry so to speak, specially on the weaker ones.
"I'm pretty sure he's behind these cans. I just don't want to get scratched if I can help it." She looked at the milk and seemed to think for a second. She always had things for *********, just in case but milk was never one of the things she carried and well... she did have a bowl though. "What's your name? I've told you mine."

"I'm not scared!" Victor protested loudly, but he heard his voice echoing in the alley and he hunched down a bit, leaning closer to her fearfully. He couldn't help himself. This was as uncomfortable a situation as he could possibly imagine. In a pitch dark alley way mostly alone with some possible monster dog lurking around?
And what if the cat was pissed off and just attacked them for trying to help, anyway? What if it was sick with something? He'd seen Old Yeller. He knew what happened when animals bit other animals, and then bit people.
He tried to focus on her explanation instead. Senshi were superheroes of some sort, and it sounded like there were more than just her around? He had never seen one before, and he did not put it together with the news of terrorists in the city that he'd seen on the tv sometimes, before flicking over to watch something more colorful and lively.
"Why do we need superheroes?" he asked, his voice very small now, after his last out burst. "Do you just go around saving cats?"
The cat, for its part, poked its head out slowly to see them, then retreated back into its hiding hole and let out a sad meow from inside. It wasn't trapped, as far as it looked like, but it might have been hurt and scared, and did not want to be in any more danger.
"My name is Victor... what?" he saw her looking at the milk, not putting it together that she wanted to use it to coax the cat out, either. He was not the brightest bulb in the shed sometimes. He did catch on after a beat, though, shaking his head. "Mom will be mad if it's open!"

Hugbell looked at Victor like she really believed him. Specially after he clung to her more when his voice echoed. "Yup, totally believable."
She paused when he asked why they needed superheroes, "Because there's bad guys attacking people walking home at night." She answered, "I save cats in my spare time."
"Nice to meet you Victor." She paused when he asked what, she actually hadn't asked for the milk yet but he caught on. "Not if you bring home a cat and tell her you were saving it." She smiled, "Parents have a soft spot for animals, hopefully if it works she'll be happy to take it to a vet or a shelter where it can be treated if it's really hurt."
She stayed crouched down, wiggling her fingers at the kitten. "Come on kitty, kitty." She could pull out ********* snack cakes but she was pretty sure a normal kitty shouldn't have cake. "I wish I had a toy for it to play with." She was glancing at the ribbons tied to her hands, if the boy wasn't going to help her with his milk, then she supposed she'd have to try her ribbons.

Victor was not sure what to think of anything the girl was telling him.
Was she lying to make him look stupid? Was this some sort of a very elaborate prank? Why would the city need kids like her to protect them from bad guys, and why would kids like her want to do that? He could think of a lot of other things he would rather be doing with his time then saving cats in the night time.
But then, he read a lot of comic books. In his head, he often imagined a world where he could help people, and he could be strong and confident and not scared of anything. It would be cool, to have power like that, to have a purpose. It was just not something he had ever thought he would face in reality, and that left him not knowing how to react to it.
His instincts said to be bitter and to tease the idea, while inside he thought it was the coolest thing he had ever heard.
And he had another fight inside himself, which was over the milk. If he was going to use it or not to try and get this cat out of its hiding place. Maybe it didn't want to come out because they were in its home? He frowned, and looked at her for a long moment then sighed and put the bottle on the floor.
"It's getting warm anyway," he said, using all his strength to get the plastic top off. "Do I just put it on the floor?" he had no pets, so he wasn't sure of the protocol.

"No I have a bowl. It'll dry too fast on the ground." She pulled around her backpack and pulled out a bowl, "I just don't carry milk because it gets messy so I normally keep water." She added as she sat it down so he could pour it. "Don't worry I'll buy you a new one. We can tell the store guy that one of those terrorist stole it from you."
She wasn't much bothered by the fact she was using the terrorist story so loosely. "I'm sure you're mother would appreciate the fact you helped a poor kitty though."
She waggled her fingers at the kitten, "Come on kitty, kitty, you smell the milk?" She asked patting the bowl. Watching the kitten watch her, "This actually isn't the first kitten I've saved, Me and Polaris, she's an older senshi; we had to go down into the sewer one day to save a kitten. It'd fallen down the storm drain and it's owner was upset." She explained, before she shrugged; "It's not always kittens that need saving though. Adults, people being attacked by random unknown monsters. Luckily I can normally feel those coming."

Victor frowned at her, grumbling after a moment as he moved to pour the milk into the bowl. He was not sure why she thought to carry bowls around with her, especially if she was fighting bad guys like a super hero. Wouldn't it get cracked? Was it some kind of thing she used in fighting bad guys?
It couldn't be the source of her power, because she wouldn't just put it on the ground.
His mom would be happy that he saved a cat. She was a very animal oriented person, though sometimes he thought she liked them more than she liked him. He frowned and looked at the senshi, then looked at the bowl. He let her speak, listening to her story of older senshi and other heroes. Saving cats seemed to be their thing, but she said there were monsters, too.
Real monsters, or was she messing with him because he was scared and she knew it? He turned red, shaking his head.
"There is no such thing as monsters. I don't know what kind of club you're in but it sound really weird and stupid." He huffed, folding his arms over his chest, then looked at the bowl and saw the cat poking its head out, sniffing at the milk. It looked sad and dirty, and maybe a little bit injured, though it was crouched so close to the ground it was hard to see if it was limping.

Hugbell watched as the kitten was watching them. The bowl was plastic so it wasn't going to break and was easy enough to replace. "... You'd be surprised how fast you'll end up taking that back. They're not monsters under your bed but they do roam the city." She said mater-o-factly. "They attack anyone without bias, but a lot of them I think... are misinformed..." She rolled her shoulders softly.
She watched the kitten as it creeped out and finally after what it seemed like forever lapped at some of the milk. It seemed very, very afraid of something. Hugbell looked around and tried to focus she wanted to make sure the kitten hadn't been a victim of something more? The child shrugged, "And I know dark allies are scary, but it's not really a club, well maybe there's parts of it like a club. We're kind of more like the.... uah power rangers?" She offered, "There's bad guys and monsters. It's better to be wary than not, sometimes being cautious of things is good."
She pulled out Barnaby. "Do you believe in magic?" She asked curiously wondering if she could show him what Barnaby did to help her case.

Victor looked uneasy, but like he was trying to hide it. And he was failing spectacularly while his efforts rebelled against him and left his emotions very plain on his face. He wrinkled his nose in feigned distaste, his emotions leaning more towards abject terror rather than anything else.
There were monsters? Oh god, he did not need to hear that. He did not want to hear that. He did not want to believe it. It was easy to scoff and laugh and pretend there weren't these things he was terrified but he also listened, and he watched, and there were things that just didn't make sense.
Monsters, though. That explained everything.
He wondered if it would look really sissy if he turned tail and ran all the way back home... would he ever see her again for her to tease her about it? Or would she tell everyone in this club of hers, and he would be a laughing stock? Would the kids at school hear about it? He couldn't risk it, and willed himself to stay.
"Power Rangers?" he couldn't hide the interest and hope in his voice. He loved power rangers. He had been the Green Ranger for halloween, and slept in a t shirt with the green ranger on it. Most of his attire was green because of his adoration of the character and the simple idea of being able to become something more.
He grumbled something in reply to her question that almost sounded like a yes, but he didn't want to admit it too loudly so others, who weren't there anyway, might hear. But of course he believed in magic, even if that was a weird and stupid thing according to some of the other kids in school. According to him, most of the time, when he was trying to look tough. But alone, privately, where no one could hear him and no one would hassle him for it?
His world revolved around the belief that magic, super powers, and things like that existed.
