Anthony Darrow was always thankful for the last hour of work. It slowed down, sure, and seemed to last forever, but he had almost gotten used to that feeling. He focused on the good to come: being able to go home, give his wife a kiss, then go out and start his patrol. He did not stay out too long, either, with Kyndall needing him as she did.

He was stressed, but it was a nice kind of stress. Something he could get used to, though just as he was finding his stride he knew it was all about to get turned up onto its head. His wife was going to give birth soon, and once that baby arrived he would have to get used to a bran new schedule.

And babies did not really like to follow a set clock.

He was clearing up his work space and he typed the last notes up, and then moved to check in the books in the drop. He was going to do a walk through the library and get the last people in the various study rooms and hiding places out, then lock up.

Hopefully it would remain quiet, and his patrol would follow that lead as well.

Arian Laith was one of those late stragglers, having managed to lose track of time, although the reason could be tracked to the book that the dark-haired teen seemed engrossed in.

He’d actually slipped into the library to while away a little bit of time before heading out on patrol for the night as his counterpart Athene, but one book had somehow become two and two relatively quickly three. Looked like his patrol tonight would be starting somewhat later than initially planned.

Arian was hoping for a quiet night himself – after the ‘excitement’ that the carnival opening had turned into – the dark-haired teen rather felt that he was owed one.

There were no quiet nights in Destiny City, especially when so many people were hoping for one. There was a kind of spiteful menace to life in this city, and the White Moon often felt its wrath when they least wanted to.

The harder they hoped, for example, for something like peace, the more likely it was that some large battle was coming their way.

Tony waved as a duo thanked him for his time and wandered out the front doors. That was almost everyone now, though he knew he had seen one more studier somewhere in the library. He would have to do another full walk through just to be sure it was empty, but that was fine.

He was just spotting Arian as a shadow moved behind him. For one reason or another, the library was a port of call for youma activity, though Camelot did his damn best to keep it chaos and danger free. It was an endless and impossible effort, however.

He didn't see the youma though, and it ducked down an aisle as Tony moved over to Arian's table.

"We're almost closing up, but there's no rush," he said, recognizing the other and smiling leisurely. He knew Arian was no trouble, so he didn't mind letting the younger man stay as long as he needed.

It slowly filtered in that someone was speaking to him, Arian’s head coming up as it slowly dawned on him that he was no longer alone at the small table he had been reading at.

“Oh good evening Mr Darrow” for a moment Arian looked flustered as he realised just how late it was, closing the book, he stood and reached to place it back on the shelf. There was a slightly flustered expression on his face as he admitted “Sorry I hadn’t realised that it was so late.”

He hadn’t noticed the youma prowling around the library, having missed the shadow that had ducked down one of the aisles.

Tony smiled and nodded his head in greeting. It was always nice to see someone who really enjoyed their reading. Even though Tony himself was not much of a reader, despite working at the library, he had an affinity for books. Most people showed that care by reading them, and that was how he felt kinship to them.

He just chose to show his fondness for the written words by making them available for others, and giving them a good home in this library.

"Oh, don't worry about it, there's no rush, really. I was just... more... letting you know that time has, indeed, passed." He laughed, having seen many students lose themselves to their assignments, and avid readers forget their schedule as they got wrapped up in their books. It was not uncommon, to say the least.

There was a growl and Tony looked up, tense.

"Ah... well... perhaps... maybe you should be getting going. Uh. I forgot that I need to run a... security... system... check."

Tony was still not an excellent liar, though he was getting better at it. The need for cover stories was dire, but he could never think them up on the fly, instead needing to think about things for at least a little bit before daring to give a cover story.

Tonight he did not have that luxury.

[Arian might have missed seeing the youma slipping down one of the book aisles, but he had heard the growl and for a moment he frowned slightly.

Somehow Arian doubted that said growl had come from Dogby and from his experience growls like that tended not to belong to anything good – well okay it was more from his senshi counterpart – Athene’s experience, but Arian wasn’t counting.

He nodded at Tony’s explanation about needing to run a security check, taking the librarian’s words at face value “Sure” he said quietly as he picked up his bag “Sorry again for taking your time like that.”

Not that Arian was planning to actually leave – not if what he thought what the growl had come from was wandering the library – however he could hardly henshin up into Sailor Athene in front of Mr Darrow and if there was really a youma roaming the library aisles then he wasn’t exactly equipped to handle it as he was now.

So for now Arian would act as if he was going to leave for the evening, and then double back once he had henshined up as Athene – or at least that was his plan.

Tony knew it would never be Dogby, if only because the sweet little thing did not growl. It was almost as if she had never learned how, and she only made strange noises of discomfort when she was upset, or whined when she wanted attention. If there was an enemy or bad guy, someone she did not immediately fall in love with as was her way, she usually just ran away from it.

A guard dog, she was not.

Tony waited for Arian to get to the end of the aisle, assuming he was just going to continue on his way out at that point, before he turned to power up. It was an easy process, and a more than familiar one, calling his shield to him and turning into the Knight of Earth, Camelot. He felt a lot more comfortable, though he still hated the idea of a youma being present in his library. But at least now he could get rid of it.

He moved to find it before it found him, but paused when he realized Arian had not left yet.

"Ahh..."

After saying his farewells to Tony, Arian had walked to the end of the library aisle. Once around the corner and out of sight he’d dropped his bag to the floor and assuming that Tony would continue on in the opposite direction he’d taken a chance on summoning his henshin pen.

He’d planned to move further along down the aisles of books before powering up and hope that he didn’t run into the source of the growl before he could power up into his senshi counterpart, but an ‘Ah’ behind him had him turning round in surprise, Arian realising only at the last moment that he still had the bronze and jade henshin pen in his hand. Oh crap!

“Um…” he said quietly as he tried to surreptitiously hide said henshin pen behind his back and then his eyes widened in surprise as he recognised the Knight in front of him “Camelot!”

Camelot blinked and saw the henshin pen, but couldn't yet put a name to the face because of the magic that protected their identities. Glamour was a strong magic, though it sounded a little girly. He looked at him in wonder, blinking and slowly putting together that the boy was, at least, a senshi. Even if he couldn't tell which one.

"I... uhm. This is... not what it... uhm."

He saw the youma turning the corner, at the end of the aisle Arian was at now, and let out a surprised yelp. He pointed over his shoulder.

"Behind you! Ducked to the left, I'll cut it off!" He could at least give Arian a chance to power up, before they discussed this new revelation that they were both powered beings and they had not known it before now. He wondered how often that really happened: how many of his friends were actually senshi or knights, or even negas, in secret.

Arian’s sagged a little in relief when it sunk in that it was Camelot in front of him. It could have been worse – it could have been Tony who had seen the henshin pen and that could have led to more questions than Arian particularly wanted to try answering – especially as he’d probably end up having to lie and lying wasn’t one of his strongest points.

He had no idea where Camelot had come from and as the youma had just appeared at the end of the aisle, no time in which to ask. Instead Arian had nodded at the Knight’s words and ducked left like the Knight had asked him too.

He dashed a little further down the aisle before calling out “Athene Eternal, Make-Up!” The sequence was familiar and before long Arian Laith had been replaced by Eternal Sailor Athene.

Powered Athene could sense what Arian could not and he headed back at a fast trot to where he could sense both youma and Knight.

There would probably still be questions, but those would have to come later – dusting the youma took priority.

Camelot was sure he had been caught, and already accepted that Arian now knew that the librarian was also the Knight of Earth, Camelot. But that was an issue that was not for now, and he would have to deal with it later. Like when there wasn't a youma running through the library, trying to kill Arian.

That was certainly one solution to Camelot's identity problem, but not one he wanted to risk.

Camelot managed to slam his shield down on the youma and pin it down, though it was long and thin, and was wiggling immediately. It was not going to stay pinned long. The Knight lashed out and grabbed onto it with his hand, but it was able to curl around, like a snake or some sort of lizard thing, and sink its teeth into his arm. He hissed in pain, pulling back, but now, at least, he had the thing with its attention on him.

He looked up to see Athene, and something in his mind clicked. The colors and symbol on the henshin pen he had glimpsed. The glamour had cracked, and he could almost see through it. But the lizard tightened its jaws on his arm and he couldn't really think too much about it.

"Athene! A bit of help? It's like a vice."

Ironically, Camelot’s civilian identity was safe for now, Athene (or rather his civilian counterpart) having missed the other’s shift from librarian to Knight. On the other the cat was kind of out of the bag with Arian – the henshin pen that he had held marking him out as some sort of senshi – even if for the moment the glamour cracked though it was still held.

Seeing the youma clamped around the Camelot’s arm as it was, Athene briefly considered trying to use his senshi ability on the thing and then decided against it – it seemed too close wrapped around the Knight’s arm as it was and Athene was worried that he might end up trapping both Knight and youma – that is if his senshi ability decided to work given that it still had its temperamental moments.

After a moment or so he settled on moving forward and helping by trying to physically prise the thing off – hoping that his increased strength as eternal would help make a difference.

Camelot was glad when Athene grabbed on to the youma and helped him to pry the things jaws open. It had not been able to puncture his arm with its teeth, not directly, but he was still bleeding from it because it had pushed some of the metal on his armor into his skin.

These things could pack a punch sometimes. It was never safe to underestimate a youma, regardless of rank or experience.

But they managed to drag it off of him and he was relieved. It got tossed to the side and hissed at them viciously. Camelot had his shield on his arm soon enough though, and he was feeling much better about the whole thing at that point. He moved to slam his shield into the youma's head, in an effort to dust it quickly.

He then looked at Athene, blinking.

"I... uhm. Thank you for your help, Ar... Ath... uhm." He rubbed the back of his neck and then sighed in defeat, powering down just to make sure they were on the same page. Tony looked at him expectantly, offering a goofy, awkward grin.

Despite its seemingly firm grip, Athene and Camelot’s combined efforts were enough to prise the youma off and once the thing was on the ground all it took was a swift slam of the Knight’s shield to turn the thing to dust.

Which meant that later had suddenly arrived.

As he listened to Camelot speak, Athene wondered if the awkwardness he was feeling was one-sided. “It’s okay…” he started, looking up from the dust that had once been a youma in time to see Camelot power down – and promptly got his second shock of the evening.

“Mr Darrow?” Surprise was evident in his voice, his british accent suddenly strong in the tone as he blinked at the librarian for a few moments, and then as the librarian’s expectant look finally penetrated he said quietly and somewhat awkwardly, “Oh right” before dehenshining down, until finally it was Arian looking at Tony from behind his semi-rimless black framed glasses and his hair back in its usual long braid.

Tony blinked.

He had thought that Athene had seen him powering up before, certainly, though they had not been able to talk about it at the time. He did not realize he had actually escaped giving his identity away, until just now. Well. It was only fair, anyway, that they both knew, right? Camelot was usually the type to think that, anyway.

Tony smiled and shook his head.

"Imagine that! I had no idea that you, Arian, were also Athene! And we meet together so much, in both forms... it's ridiculous to think, sometimes, how strong that glamour magic really is. I can't believe I never even thought of it before. And I know my identity should not be as safe as it is... considering." One of the oldest knights in the city, who patrolled around the library where a librarian that really liked Arthurian legends worked. And who was pretty old.

It seemed obvious but people did not put it together so he had to thank the magic for that. It kept his friends and family safe, and that was all he really wanted.
