Perched atop the building as he was, Leucite had a good view of the city below. The people came and went - hustling and bustling about their lives, never knowing that above them the greatest predator of all stalked them. Leucite's lip curled in a slight smirk as he slowly made his way down the building, taking his time to ensure he didn't cause himself any injury.

He harvested them not because he wanted to - it was for the greater good. At least that is what he told himself. A small sacrifice - not even a lethal one - to serve the interests of earth and her protectors, the Negaverse.

Popping out of the alley he'd taken as his home base for the evening, he grabbed a young woman and dragged her into the darkness, hand covering her mouth to stifle her screams as he pressed her against the wall.

"Shhh... shhh... I'm not going to hurt you," He whispered soothingly into her ear, as a hand moved to rest lightly on her chest. "Your gift will help us defeat the true monsters..." He murmured.

Then he began to drain her, taking the energy the Negaverse so desperately needed.

The noise Aventine thought she heard proved to be more than just in her mind; the tingle of a Negaverse aura had put her on edge, and the muffled scream was enough to summon her. She forced herself to ignore the hesitation in her gut and charged, hoping to intervene before someone got seriously hurt.

It wasn't a difficult trek; she made it there in a matter of seconds and skidded to a halt just in front of the two. She expected some dramatic scene, some lieutenant throttling a young innocent, or sending some youma to do his bidding. The sight was not one she expected—and not one she knew how to process.

For a second—a long second—she stared, confused by what, exactly, he was doing. Her mind just couldn’t wrap around it beyond knowing that something was very wrong.

Afraid that if she charged towards him he might try to snap the woman's neck, she instead did the most sensible thing she could think of—she gripped her perfume bottle and hurled it at his head with a crude command of, "Hey, a*****e, let her go before I come over there and mess you up."

As the perfume bottle bounced off the back of Leucite's head it did what Aventine would have hoped it could do. The distraction forced him to stop gathering energy, dropping the civilian, who scrambled listlessly away from the Lieutenant. What energy he had gathered he forced into an orb quickly before pocketing it away.

"..." Leucite turned to face the knight, eyes dripping venom and hatred as his lips curled into a bone-blistering sneer.

"Oh really now? Well then, sweetheart, come on over and show me what you got." Leucite growled.

"Actually, better yet, let me show you why this was a bad idea."

He hadn't even finished the sentence when he leaped at her, swinging his right fist right at her head, his left right for her gut.

Aventine would have loved to stumble back before the man made any sort of contact, but she just wasn't that lucky. Squire or not, the lieutenant had moved too fast for her to escape him entirely. The right fist was easier to dodge; she definitely saw that one coming.

The left one, not so much.

Even though she had been backing away, it still caught her in the gut hard enough to push the breath from her.

Most Negaversers liked to banter for a short bit before attacking, but clearly this one was quick to get down to business. Which was good, since she definitely didn't have the breath for a verbal spat right now. Close range combat wasn't her forte (not that long range was, either) but she was hoping that her power boost was advantage enough to make up for that.

"Don't think you're the only one who knows how to do some damage," she hissed, sucking in a gulp of air just before kicking towards the male's stomach. She didn't have a target in mind, she just wanted to whack him and was willing to take whatever she could get—especially if it put a little bit of distance between the two of them.

Leucite grunted and stutter stepped back a few steps as he took the point of her kick to his gut. He hadn't expected her to kick - since her outfit didn't seem conducive to kicking - but obviously that was a misjudgment. He would not do so again.

When his diaphragm decided to stop being a spasming snare drum, he took a deep breath, and readjusted his stance, slowly attempting to circle the girl he was now completely committed to kicking the a** of.

He ignored her banter - not really in the mood to toss quips about today. It was pure business - well he wasn't going to lie and say he wasn't going to take pleasure in stomping all over her lifeless body but...

Without even acknowledging she'd spoken, he began his attack, a quick three jab combo (2 body, 1 head) followed up by a high snap kick toward her neck.

If he could get her to focus high, he'd sweep her leg and take this to the ground, where he could really have some fun.

The lack of dialogue helped put some sort of emotional distance between Aventine and her opponent; with him so clammed up, she didn't have to worry about keeping up with what he was saying. He moved quickly—faster than she had seen any lieutenant move. Though she was a squire, and no novice to this sort of battle, it took her by surprise. Dodging was not something she was particularly good at; most of her experience came from rugby, and as a full contact sport, she was used to taking some solid blows head on.

Punches were a little different than tackles, though; she narrowly dodged the first of the jabs, but took the second to the chest. It was a stinging pain that cause her to stumble back—which was as much of a blessing as a downfall. She missed the final jab and kick, but at the cost of her balance and another shortness of breath. Her weight was all off—and Leucite didn't even have to focus on sweeping at her ankles to have her topping backwards. As if the first blow to the stomach hadn't been enough to knock her breath out of her, that blow coupled with the harsh landing to the ground beneath her was enough to make her see stars.

Thankfully for her, it was enough to take her down but not enough to crush her will to fight. She jammed her foot at the lieutenant's ankle, hoping to put him off balance. He was clearly better with actually throwing attacks, but she had the advantage of boosted magical strength (she hoped). If he couldn't keep up those rapid attacks, maybe she'd at least stand a chance to put him in her place without taking much more damage.

Her plan - on the fly as it was - worked wonders, as Leucite had a very bad habit of underestimating his opponent. She was not the first squire he'd faced, but then again, Sutai hadn't exactly been the fighting type. Grunting as he took her kick square to the ankle. He yowled as he went down, landing roughly on his arse and cussing like a sailor on leave.

She hadn't broken his ankle - thank god and all the saints - but she had definitely done some damage to it. Hissing, he scrambled back as best he could on his rump and one good leg, forced to mostly use his arms to scoot back away from Aventine.

Yeah - it was definitely sprained, twisted at the very least. He wasn't going to get up any time soon.

Glowering at Aventine, he waited for her to swoop in while he was down and finish him - it was the only logical next step.

For a second, Aventine remained on the ground, panting; when Leucite didn't jump to his feet, she hesitated on getting to her own. "Well?"? she demanded, as if expecting some trick or scheme to suddenly illuminate itself. When a few more seconds ticked with no attack, she slowly stood, hastily brushing herself off. "…What, you hit the ground and you're out of commission? You okay or what, suddenly lose your nerve?"

And wouldn’t that have been an exciting thing—if a quick tussle and suddenly he had decided he didn't want to fight. What she wouldn’t have given just to have him head on home—and do the same, herself. She was going to have bruises to nurse, and cuddled up with a few ice packs seemed like a good way to end her night.

"You nearly broke my ankle, so - no - I don't think I'll be getting up any time soon. So please - finish me. I'm sure you want to." Leucite growled as he slowly attempted to stand, gritting his teeth as he managed to make it up to a knee before shaking his head. Nope - no go. He wasn't going to be getting anywhere on that leg for awhile.

"As much as I desire to kill you right now - I suppose you've been granted a stay." He glared venom at her, mouth set. A small feeling of grudging respect was building in his chest or the girl and he couldn't shake it.

She'd beaten him - fairly - and that was how fights went. You won some - you lost some.

Just in this case losing them meant you got the snot kicked out of you till you were nearly dead by the enemy. Or worse.

"Well? You going to end this or not?"

Aventine was more than a little stunned by his response. "Finish…you? You think I'm going to kill you or something? It's not really my policy to kill someone…"

What a strange side to be on—he thought she was going to kill him? The thought hadn't once entered her mind. She'd killed animals—for food. Not that she hadn't fought with people! She'd tussled with a few girls (and boys) for rubbing her the wrong way, but never had the thought entered her mind to want them dead.

"I think we can end that there." He was injured—that was good, right? A part of her felt bad, seeing him down like that, but another part of her was thrilled. If he couldn’t get up and finish their fight now, maybe he'd be off his feet for quite some time! Maybe he'd stop causing trouble for however long it took him to heal! That was definitely a victory—right?

"Do you want me to call someone, or…I mean, like, help you up?" She gestured behind her, adding, "Or I can just go…?"

... She wasn't going to finish him. She was either extremely honorable or insanely foolish - and he was pretty dead set on the later of the options. Growling darkly, he watched her as she declared the fight over - and rightly so. Unless he wanted to gnaw at her ankles, there wasn't much he was going to be able to accomplish in his current state.

"Coward," he hissed, slowly forcing himself to stand, accepting and welcoming the blinding pain that came from putting weight on his sprained ankle before he could lift it off the ground. Head swimming for a moment, he hopped over to the alley wall and leaned against it, catching his breath.

"If you don't have the stones to end this properly - get out of here. But know that I will find you - and I will destroy you."

If she attempted to come any closer, he would attack her again - leg or no.

In that moment, Aventine had to make a judgment call. It was impossible that she would ever truly consider killing him. She wasn't going to finish him—even if that meant she had to deal with him in the future.

"Coward, really? That's what you say to someone who's gonna spare your life?" Who gave a death threat when their own life was spared? …Or whatever, Aventine really didn't have the stones to kill him. She probably couldn’t live with herself if she ever embraced the thought of killing. "I mean, whatever, you're welcome. Catch you around, lieutenant. Take care of yourself until we meet again."

She wanted it to be a fair fight, even if she planned to kick his a** instead of winning through a fluke. It seemed like a better time than any to make sure she enrolled in some self-defense classes. When this guy got to be her rank, she doubted she'd have stood the same chance then as she did today.

"I have no thanks for the likes of you - just know you have made an enemy today - one that will see your end." With that he turned, slowly, and hobbled his way along the alley wall, trying to keep as much weight off the injured ankle as much as he could. Gasping and grumbling on the off occasions when he had to.

He was not about to show weakness before the likes of her. If you didn't have the dedication to your cause to be willing to kill for it - to live for it.

Then you didn't deserve to live.

He felt cheated - angry that she was leaving him to live another day. Didn't she realize she was only sealing her fate?

Such a waste...
