It was girls gone wild almost. All they needed were guns.
She hoped there were guns in the next place.
Kiera saluted Lydia as they drove to show she was still good, as they did so periodically.

Lydia kind of liked this, despite the death raining down on them...and sweeping in from the sides...and boiling up from underneath. Okay, despite the death coming in from all angles

It was like getting a moment to feel badass honestly. Kiera never knew how exhilarating that felt before.
More minutes passed and she gave the all clear. The silence, which she had normally welcomed, felt odd after making chatter with Lydia for a while now.

Lydia was used to working alone, so suddenly finding herself in relative silence, if one didn't count the booms and crashes and shrieks of monsters and humans alike in the distance, was nothing new.
Another check in to make sure Kiera was still good, and they kept on rolling in the deep.

Maybe the monsters had congregated somewhere else. Kiera wondered after Moore and Wickett's health. Whorl had been thoroughly eviscerated, but she had yet to see either of her bosses . . . Maybe they knew how this terrible event began.
Or maybe this was all the work of some natural activist determinedly trying to set the creatures free, as Lydia had mentioned herself wanting.
Wouldn't that have been just a kicker.
No, the real kicker was thinking they were relatively safe, for a naga decided to slither into their way. Kiera made rough gestures that generally translated to gtfo.

Of course the noises in the distance could only stay distant for so long. With her glasses on, Lydia could see the naga slither into view with a visual clarity she didn't often possess. It was a nightmare come to life, but there was no way after everything she had been to to survive up until this point she was going to go down without a fight!
Well, okay, she wasn't going to fight, she was going to rev her engines and pray beneath her breath that she could out maneuver the creature, and speed past it into the sunset.
Done and done.

Kiera mumbled something reminiscent of a prayer.
Unfortunately, she was not living on one.
The naga upturned her vehicle and she was promptly thrown out as Lydia made her way onward.

And thus Kiera learned she hated snakes.
Dropping the ice pack that had been so soothing on her arm, she scurried away and did the probably sloppiest job ever of wrapping bandages on herself as she ran. She felt better, sure, but nothing was more terrifying than having to escape something that felt like it was hissing in your ********, shite, ******** hell - !"
