God help them, it was a mess out there. At least it wasn't so bad once they were driving through the trees.
Heading south, Kiera periodically checked behind them for the sound of thumps or wingbeats, her heart still racing despite her cool exterior. Here she thought she would have just gotten them in and out, job well done, one step closer to promotion. That was all that mattered to her: the next step up. And now it was the next step even happened.
"You doing alright?" she asked Lydia with a glance over. The woman had been doing miraculously well all things considered. One moment about to suffocate with Algie under the spider's webs, the next staunchly applying an ice pack in a safe zone. Was the building still in tact?
Well, they had a dragon out there. She highly doubted it now.
Something roared overhead and half of a tree tumbled into their path, forcing them up and over with much protest. Even in the four wheeler, taking damage like that made it shudder and squeak, and she fought to keep them on the path. "We're still good, fine, just fine," she murmured through gritted teeth.

"Surviving." Came the one word reply from the woman seated on Kiera's right, teeth gritted as well. The ice pack was helping, though only by minimal amounts, with the red welts that covered her entire body, including parts of her face.
At least the oozing blood had seemed to stop, and hopefully whatever venom or acid or whatever that spider had shot her with had vacated with the flow.
"You?" She asked, just before a roaring sound over head made her cringe in her seat, snapping her mouth closed and bracing herself as they soon found themselves going up and over a fallen tree.
"This transportation device won't last long at this rate."
Paging Captain Obvious.

Kiera bit back a sarcastic retort along similar lines and nodded her head grimly. "Just . . . I don't know. Take a deep breath and concentrate on not bleeding anymore," she told Lydia. "I'm okay. Rattled, but fine."
And her heartbeat was racing still, as if any moment they'd be chased down again by that mob. The mob that she had helped nurture and raise and read books too when they incubated . . . And then the lab tech took a deep breath herself and exhaled.
"It's weird, raising kids and then having to make sure they won't kill you."

Lydia laughed, a sarcastic sound though it still ended in a snort despite the drastic change in her usual demeanor and tone. "You made a mistake here. These creatures belonged in nature, without human interference."
Why yes, she did still believe these were all creatures stolen from the world and placed in containment on this island...even if it made no sense whatsoever.

"Nature?" Now it was Kiera's turn to laugh wryly. "Those things are about as natural to this world as a three dollar American bill. No, those things are very, very unnatural. They aren't even made of the same stuff we are."
Before she could elaborate, a werewolf traipsed into the path before them with a howl, already in a bipedal, rather formidable looking form.
"Shite."

"Hang on again!"
In a rather superb moment of coordination, timing, and terrain luck, Kiera maneuvered the four wheeler, still going at full speed, onto a small cliff-like ramp that jettisoned them just above the creature's grasp. The landing was rough, but by God did the woman put the pedal to the metal then.
For once, the fear was tinged with the thrill of excitement. She had never really ridden four wheelers around before, but now she could see why staff had taken joy rides. This was fun.
And thus onward they drove.

Lydia would have replied with a retort of her own, but then suddenly werewolf.
And then she did hold on. Thanks for the advice, Kiera.
