The orange and purple hues mixing into the blue in the western horizon brought a hint of a smile to Ainsley's face. Whatever pleasant memories he had while he was still living his life on Serenia came to mind, especially those spent with the few he considered as friends, as at least as close to friends as he let them get. Still, he didn't delay for too long before keeping on with his travels. The town was now in sight, but it was still quite a distance away. It's take more than a few hours to get there still, and by the time he arrived he assumed that it would already be dark out. Now, as Quan constantly reminded him on the ship that they took to Ayr, it wasn't a very good idea to be spending a night out in the Rocks by yourself. With a party, sure, but never alone.
"Too many dragons," the older traveler had said, and he sounded like he spoke from personal experience so Ainsley simply took his word for it.
He was still on his way down from the mountain pass that he (stupidly) took for a shortcut courtesy of a few passing travelers. It was taking him a lot longer than he expected but he was progressing, however slowly, through it without too many hitches. Minus that encounter with the bird-snake, things were going relatively smoothly. With any luck he'd avoid any dragons and other creatures and make it into the town in one piece.
With a sigh, however, he slowly came to the realization that that probably wasn't going to happen. Not too far off from where he was, he noticed, was a nest that seemed very familiar. It didn't take long for it to dawn on him that the nest likely belonged to a Vlidean - pesky territorial birds that constantly harassed whoever came near their nests. He had a particularly nasty bout with a flock of them on Serenia, a memory he'd long since forgotten until that moment, and he wasn't looking forward to encountering any of the nasty things on a mountain. Unfortunately, his luck was just never on his side, and as he turned to make a hurried exit a he heard the calling of a Vlidean not too far behind him.
Fluttering of feathers and flapping of wings was all that rang in his ears as he made a run for... well, any sort of shelter really. He took a second to look behind him, and he noted that there was now a small flock of the obnoxiously colored birds following him. His legs could only last for so long, but he kept on running, and the birds kept on chasing. One even managed to catch up and swoop down just enough to catch the tip of his ear as he ducked.
Ainsley did his best to swat the things away and ignored the pain and what felt like a bit of blood trickling down his new wound as he kept on running, trying his hardest not to trip so they wouldn't catch up with him...

And so he ran and they chased. It felt like he'd been going for forever, but just as he was about to turn around and dive headfirst into the flock and whip out his axe in the process, just ahead of him he saw an area where he could possibly gain the upper hand without sacrificing an eye in the process. There was a boulder than jutted out from the ground just a few feet ahead, and when he'd gotten close enough he quickly took shelter underneath it. The Vlidean didn't know any better and continued on with their chase, realizing just a tad too late that they're target had managed to get behind them.
In the seconds that he'd bought for himself, Ainsley had taken out his axe and whacked into the Vlidean that was lagging the furthest behind. One down, just a few more to go. Using his pack as a sort of shield, he utilized the fury of the birds against them and, while it proved quite difficult as they attacked him from literally all directions, in the end he was the only one left standing. He'd picked up another few scars and wounds in the process, and his pack looked like it was about ready to fall apart, but he was alive and that was all that mattered. The bodies of the little clan of Vlidean lay limp on the ground all around him, but he paid them little to no attention while cleaning the blades of his axe.
Tired and a little winded, Ainsley only rested for a few minutes before going back to worrying about making it into town before nightfall. Thankfully the little chase that he'd just been in amped up his pace quite a bit, and he was a fair bit of distance away from where he'd been before encountering the annoying birds. That meant that he was also that much closer to the town, so without delaying much longer, Ainsley set off again. The town did look a little bit closer now, not to mention prettier thanks to the setting sun.
