Talis came to know insufferable boredom as the chief grievance of being alone. In her days as a princess she heard rogues speak of starvation, thirst, and terrible weather -- the sweltering heat and the frigid cold. It wasn't as if she had never gone hungry or feared a seemingly harmless downpour might rain, rain, rain until a flood swept her away. She should have known better than to gripe when the necessities of life were readily available.
Yet of all circumstances to bemoan, the runaway queen-to-be voiced none as often as the matter of her solitude. Any vagabond habits were a product of nurture, not nature; Talis was a profoundly social creature, obviously.
By time Steinn happened across her that morning, she would have conversed with nearly anyone.
The circumstances of their meeting were typical, but Talis didn't mind. She had met interesting lions just loitering around a water source before. Besides, the fact anyone else would be in this part of the jungle at this particular stream was blessing enough.
She approached him with a amiable disposition and a standard greeting.
"Hello."

Stienn had gathered a small band of lions to bring back to the Dvergr with him by now. He'd soon be returning to the mountain. Word by bird had come to him that Thorin had returned already, and with a queen. Celebrations would be happening, and it would not do to miss them! For now though, he was scouting ahead, checking for danger before he brought his new found compatriots this way. That was when he happened upon Talis. Was she alone? A rogue? Potentially another number to his clan? He hoped so. The newly ordained Patriarch of Clan Haldis was most certainly hopeful. Steinn jovially welcomed the lioness' greeting, "Hello, m'lady!"

Talis just barely canted her head in response to his salutations. A peculiar moniker, though one she'd heard on several occasions. Just never around here.
Where did this lion hail from?
She knew the ins and outs of manners, having been raised with etiquette emphasized as much a life skill as hunting would be. Staring? Rude. Highly rude. So, Talis' inspection was subtle and brief. A fleeting glimpse here and there as she spoke.
"You don't strike me as the sort from the jungle," she observed in a conversational tone of voice. "Just passing through?"

Steinn chuckled. Jungle? Definitely not! "Aye. My pride and I hail from the mountains. Pardon me, I am Steinn, Patriarch of clan Haldis, humble member of the Dvergr. I have come down from the mountain to seek those who would join the pride. We were recently decimated by fire. Many of our number died. We are seeking to rebuild." It was still odd to introduce himself as the patriarch, and not at 'The Second Son of Kinoc, Patriarch of Clan Haldis' Indeed, his father and brother were dead. And that left him the position of Patriarch. He was the last, and in order to be the leader of anything, he needed numbers. He was well on his way. It was small, but something. "And you...?

"Aye. My pride and I hail from the mountains. Pardon me, I am Steinn, Patriarch of clan Haldis, humble member of the Dvergr."
A long title for a humble lion, she mused. Talis smiled at the passing thought; fortunately, it only served to present her as more of an affable character than she already had.
The princess didn't pass judgement harshly, mind you. It was more an observation of sorts.
Talk of recruitment garnered her interest. Talk of immolation her sympathy. Talis had never seen the God or Goddess of Fire, let alone had an audience with them, but she couldn't shoo away the assumptions they were a tyrannical deity. At worst, he or she turned verdant landscapes into charred wastelands. At best, they let them burn.
Talis frowned and bowed her head to him, pinning her ears back. "You have my deepest condolences," she said sincerely. "My home was taken by a flood."
Talis felt the same about God or Goddess of Rain as she did whomever lorded over the domain of Fire.
She straightened her posture, held her head higher. "My name is Talis. Where is your pride, Steinn, Patriarch of clan Haldis?"
None of it was recited mockingly. She'd never do such a thing.

"My condolences. Nature has not been kind to either of use, it would seem." He was as sincere as she was, having every ounce of empathy for those whom disaster befell. "We hail from the Aberdere Range. What remains of the pride resides there. Others, like myself, have gone seeking new members. Even our king, Thorin. Though I have caught news that he is returned, and there is to be a celebration. I'd hoped to be home in time for the festivities. There is no celebration quite like that of the Dvergr!" He no doubt has a great measure of pride for his, well, pride. He could only speak fondly of the place where he was both born and raised. "You would be welcome among us if you were interested."

Talis wondered at what point she'd gotten a rock stuck in her throat. After forcing herself to swallow the figurative menace, she donned another smile meant to stall their conversation, if only for an instant.
What she wouldn't have given to pause the world around her and provide ample time to discuss this amongst herself and her demons. Did she deserve another pride? What of her visions?
Asking his opinion on seers was too forthright. It was dangerous. Stupid, to be blunt, knowing there were those out there -- those who were otherwise genteel as this fellow -- wholly committed to seeing her kind driven to extinction or perhaps enslaved for some pious agenda.
"What are the Dvergr like?" Talis kept her voice steady, portraying herself as nothing more than a curious spectator with perfectly reasonable questions. Only a fool would meander off with a stranger having been provided such scant information.

"Aye, well... We are a pride of strong bonds of kinship and loyalty. We prize our warriors, the strong, although we have not waged war for a long, long time, but the skill and prowess is valued all the same. Ah, and we are also a folk who love a good celebration, as you might have already gathered. Festivities, tales of adventure and valor, good food, good drink and of course, the n**!" He chuckled, fond memories playing in his mind and bringing a smile to his face. "We enjoy adventure and treasure and of course, we treat our women well. Especially those who show battle prowess. We've learned to fear and respect our women," He again laughed, remembering his own mother. He had...so many fond memories.

Talis was a rapt listener. It wasn't as thorough an explanation as she'd have liked, but perhaps that was a good thing? Had they any staunch prejudices, he'd have mentioned them.
Probably.
She knew looks could be deceiving and first impressions could be wrong, but she had to admit.. Picturing this sprightly fellow as anyone to be afraid of was difficult.
"I'm not much of a warrior." She wished she were, now. "But I can hunt well -- and I could learn other things. Is there any place for someone like that?"

Steinn nodded, "Of course! A warrior is nothing without food in their belly! We've also a fondness for those who craft and have a way with words. Although I would suppose until numbers are back to a more..comfortable place smiths and bards are less a priority and more a luxury," he chuckled. Granted the Haldis Clan couldn't speak much of their bards of the past, or their smiths, for much of their reputation swirled around their warriors. They were a clan known to be more brutish and crass. Stienn wanted to pave the way for a better reputation for the clan he now headed. Brute strength alone was no longer to focus. Diplomacy and strategy, class...now that's what they needed.

The lioness perked up at that. She stood straight as she had in quite some time, finding renewed strength in the sudden surge of hope that gripped her spirit. The pride she'd been born in had done plenty of crafting. Their neighbors, plenty of singing and dancing.
"I can do all those things," she told him, careful not to sound overly anxious. That was off-putting, her nanny had always said. "I'll be glad to go with you."

"Perfect," Steinn smiled, "I do not doubt that you will find a welcome place among us!" Steinn was eager to return home. He had a fair number with him, and he worried about missing the celebrations back at home. Yes, it was time to return to the mountain. "Shall we turn our paws towards home?"

F a y t h - x Last post from me! Sorry for the wait. Home.
How long had that word been absent from her life? Talis didn't smile at him thinking this would go flawlessly. She didn't nod in agreement and move to follow him assuming the odds were in her favor. Just having a chance was good enough for now.
"Lead the way."
